  • 02/12/08 - News page updated. Read it!

    Seven new trial boards added—/fa/, /fit/, /hc/, /n/, /sp/, /toy/, & /trv/! EDIT: Two final boards added—/jp/ & /r9k/.
Don't care for them? Then don't use them. Trolling/shitposting will result in a ban. Fuck off and let others enjoy the new additions. Again, these are only trial boards at this stage.

Global filesize limit increase to 3MB. Bump and image reply limits also raised. zip.4chan.org's pruning method has been changed from time based to popularity based (like /b/).
We are still testing these changes—expect more info in a coming news post.

02/23/08 - Apparently there was an interstitial displayed earlier on the worksafe boards that contained sound and popups. This is utterly unacceptable, and we've removed the ad(s). Apologies for the inconvenience.

So we played for a few hours earlier, and at the end got our second real strike back at the adventurers. With careful preparation, we quickly attacked the stables and killed all the horses stealth-style, had Earthmaw (the bulette) dig an escape tunnel, and then proceeded to burrow up under the rogue adventurer's wedding reception. Earthmaw got the bride after I nailed her with acid spit to -4 hp, Echo and I laid waste to the groom's friends and family with our aoes, and (Formerly) Howler in his brand new harpoon spider body provided support.

Things were looking good until they all started fighting back. took a 94 damage hit from the rogue, and we all ended up running out of there with the bride at full speed. Thank god for the 7 rounds of fast healing I have left.

The Kinholme Manor storyline netted us some massive exp, as well as a sort of base of operations for our villainy, as it was formerly run by agents of our Master.

The real treat though was finding pictures of our Master when he was still a human, and a knighted one at that (apparently he went the gish route).

Up to date sheet after the wedding:

We were planning on sacrificing the bride and then leaving her body someplace public, but what with us getting torn a new one by the high leveled wedding guests, that plan has been put on hold till we figure out what to do so we're just kinda carrying her atm. Ah well, least we took out all of the commoners (not to mention the humor of a harpoon spider impaling random people, then dropping them onto others after reeling them up to the ceiling).

Supposed to resume when the DM's family outing ends later tonight, so should be updated later.

    >> Brief summary of the campaign thus far Red Crawler 02/23/08(Sat)15:17 No.1219741
    >>1219613
4 Monsters (an acidborn Rust Monster, a dungeonbred Bulette, a dungeonbred Destrachan, and a runehound) created and taken care of by a lich in a dungeon find themselves witnesses to the Lich's death at the hands of a set of adventurers, and get caught up in the explosion of its black diamond phylactery. Each gets hit with a piece of the gem, and become intelligent.

Monsters decide to take revenge, go out looking for the adventurers, manage to come across a goblin tribe (Biletooth) who had lost their home after the "heroes" "vanquished" them for raiding a supply caravan. We debated poorly (we're newly smart monsters), and got roped into helping them take their home back because there might be some evidence hidden down there to lead us back to our foes.

We kill a shitload of troglodytes (the current inhabitants of the biletooth cave) and manage to force them out while the goblins fight their way in from another cave entrance. The bulette Earthmaw has a field day and eats so many trog eggs that he gets sick, and the destrachan Echo manages to sonar us up a human skeleton from the ground.
    >> Red Crawler 02/23/08(Sat)15:18 No.1219745
    >>1219741

The old goblin shaman Uqic manages to patch us up, and becomes a solid ally to our cause (we don't know why he's so willing yet, and none of us are very perceptive on the motives of others). Uqic manages to magic us up some information from the corpse that leads us in search of the son of one of the adventurers to a town called Maar (which we then proceed to mercilessly lay waste to), where we encounter "Sir Helbrecht the Just."

We take the mounted knight on a fight leading through various farmsteads, having his warhorse crashing through fences and tripping over crops in pursuit of us. we manage to slowly whittle him down through a mix of my acid spray, Howler's run-by biting, and Echo's sonic lances. Things are looking good until Helbrecht lances Howler and knocks him into the negatives. In desperation, Earthmaw caves in the ground under his feet and the horse finally dies, falling onto Helbrecht, who then squirms his way out from under the horse and with a broken arm, on his next round uses his rusted sword to coup de grace poor Howler.

As the knight pursues us down to the town's river valley, Earthmaw executes an amazing bullrush from burrowing under the hillside, knocking the knight into the water. There, we finally end him by pelting him with rocks, sonic lances, and ranged attacks until he goes negative and drowns. We limp our way into Helbrecht's home and place Howler's gem into his trained hunting falcon, and flee. The body gets washed down the river, so we don't think anyone knows we killed him yet.

We run a few sidequests in pursuit of finding Howler a new body he would be happy with, netting us some needed exp and a handful of decent treasure, but no body. We finally give up and slap howler inside a dire bat with the promise we'll fix him asap.

Where did you get the templates for your characters from, Crawler? I've seen a lot of them, but I've never heard of Dungeonbred or Acidborn before now... Nor have I heard of a Runehound. Have I been missing out on awesome supplements or something?

Also, you are an inspiration to run a monster campaign. I might need to dig out my copy of Savage species or somesuch.

Later, largely out of confusion on where to go next, we dig our way back down into our master's (burned and caved in) lair, and deduce that this wasn't his main base of operations, and he prolly has others. We manage to rescue a few books from beneath a burned out bookcase (but none of us can read yet), but we see that our master (or whoever wrote the books) has a consistant symbol they use (a stylized crimson eye over a black field), so we decide to try to do some research on that. Earthmaw decides to learn to read, and is now the only one who can (despite being the dumbest), having to recite what he reads to Echo (the smart one).

Because we're monsters, our research consisted of burrowing into the city of Brista's library and stealing their birth records and books of heraldry. We track the symbol to the Spurio family's crest, and to make a very long story short we wind up at the largely-abandoned Kinholme manor. The house is empty and, for the large part, looted, but we find some pictures that we believe might be our Master. While earthmaw and echo are looking for clues, and I am hunting for food, Bat-Howler finds the wine cellar and the hidden door therein, leading us down into what apparently was the first "base" of sorts our master had made, filled with fellow monsters and undead that are hunting each other after being left unattended for so long.

dungeonbred and acidborn are both from dungeonscape. Runehound is in MM 2 or 3.

Savage species is alright, but we're using customized levels our DM wrote because he wanted to be able to throw his own monsters and foes at us without us getting obliterated.
    >> Red Crawler 02/23/08(Sat)15:49 No.1219846
Killing our fellow monsters was a bit uncomfortable for us, but we decide it has to be done so we have a safe place to go back to, and so we kill all but the most harmless of the creatures (where howler gets his new harpoon spider body), and make our way past the sadistic number of traps and other dangers (we accuse or DM of beating off to the Tomb of Horrors at this point) into the dungeon's heart. Earthmaw takes a big blade-trap hit to the side and we panic and use our 2 last healing potions to get him to a safe hp range. In the dungeon's heart, we find more information and deduce that very early in his life our master was an adventurer as well. We find a letter from whom we later find out is the adventurer rogue, and go looking for him. We disable the traps via force, secure the base, and convince Uqic to stay at the manor and wait for us.

You're now mostly caught up, because from here we discover the wedding, plan our attack, etc

DM doesn't use alignment, but our current actions would place us in the E bracket in terms of spells effecting us. Red Crawler is also leaning lawful due to his adherence to what we've generally figured out some of our dead master's "rules" were.

Echo is prolly neutral evil, and the default leader. Earthmaw is prolly non-evil, as his actions are largely done out of desire to protect us, and his merciless appetite.

So, we escaped back to Kinhomle Manor with the bride, and proceeded to debate what to do with her. Earthmaw figured he should just eat her (his answer to everything?). Echo wanted to "make an example of her." Howler said we should keep her as insurance. I was undecided. As we couldn't reach a consensus, she's now stabilized and locked in what we hope is a warded "cell" (aka "the metal room we collapsed rocks over the doorway in") in the 2nd sublevel of Kinholme Manor with some water and food from Earthmaws "bag of assorted meats" (pretty much a glorified burlap sack filled with carcasses).

During this debate, we took the time and thoroughly explored the base we'd aquired. The Manor itself looked like it was just a regular building, with a small vineyard attached. The sublevels, however, stupified us, because we can't figure out why there were so many traps when we haven't found anything valuable. Echo thinks that since it was a crudely built (mostly unworked stone) dungeon, this may have been his first hideout, and as such where the phylactery may have been stored, but its hard to tell because any corpses left behind would have been eaten up by the resident monsters.

However, Echo once again proved himself a godsend upon finding that there was a sealed slab in the heart of the dungeon floor that we had missed. Earthmaw decided to try burrowing down there but the bedrock was too dense for his "baby claws" as we said, and our efforts to so much as chip the slab were useless. If the adventurers did come down there we decided they prolly missed the slab, or were averted by it. We added the slab to our "to do list."

Following this, we considered our next course of action, and decided to figure out where the other bases might be if they still exist as our first goal (we still don't know much about where we came from), and whether we have any allies out there to our 2ndary objectives.

The Brain Trust of Echo and Howler pull through and deduce a possible location for us to search based off of the maps we've found for Uriel's Sanctum (one of the few settlements large and safe enough to be considered a "city" in the small corner of the world we know).

Referring to some of our books from Brista, we find the area is one of the former land holdings of the Spurio house; the wood-and-stone tower and its surrounding buildings were the center of the family's economic power, and its trading company. is now marked upon our maps as a part of a House Uriel trading post and state military camp.

Well, shit. Also, this requires us to actually enter the city as the plateau its situated upon (its defensible position is one of the only reasons its likely survived) is likely too much for Earthmaw to dig through. As we can't exactly go buy supplies for the trip, we decide to scout it out, and sneak in as best we can.

We pass through the outer farmsteads without much trouble as we avoid the animals that could give us away the farmers likely leave out on the borders to keep predators from going too far in. A rust monster, a landshark the size of a bear cub, a 4 foot spider, and a 5 foot tall blind cave lizard manage to evade watch patrols in the night and we make it to the outer streets of the city. The well lit city. Shit.

Using Echo's sound mimickry and projection, we try to Metal Gear our way through the town, avoiding notice closely several times. Until 2 of the guard groups exploring phantom noises run into each other and get suspicious. A guard in the farther group blows into a horn, and hell breaks loose.

Guards are pouring out of the camps, drunk citizens peering outside of their homes, and the map looks like a pacman game gone wrong. We break into a flat out run between buildings hoping to lose them all. Earthmaw shortens the path for us by breaking his way through a wall, and the monster party runs straight into a tavern, Echo fires his sonic lance through the opposite door, and we run through the midst of what could be a dozen adventuring parties having their first sessions. and I spit acid onto the horn of a soldier running from the other side, melting it and hopefully preventing another alarm. Howler harpoons a pair of dogs to silence their barking, and impales them on his back for some later snacks.

We still have 3 streets to go before we even reach the building, and there's prolly about 30 guards chasing us, but we're fast. We make it 2 streets without getting caught, until we see that we're actually being surrounded. Earthmaw knocks his way through another wall for us and with his dedicated bluntness bursts his way out the other side as Howler breaks through the rooftop for a look around. Echo uses his sound projection to draw some of the guards into the household, where I fire off my void carapace to take down a group of 4 patrolmen and a dog.

Yes. Yes they are. Infinite internets if Earthmaw kills a human while shouting "I pity da foo!"
    >> Red Crawler 02/23/08(Sat)23:51 No.1221932
We've got one street left of the city area we’re in left to pass through, and through a hail of arrows we breach the log wall of the military camp. Howler's "dog hide" armor soaks up a few minor hits, I manage to rust the 2 that hit me, and Earthmaw escapes unscathed. Echo isn't so lucky and gets hit by 3 arrows, but endures it and fires his sonic lance into the first tent we see. There's no point in subtlety anymore.

The outer city guards make their way through the fence, while we fight the trained House Uriel guards on the inside. Its carnage as we're all taking hits, but also felling soldiers and guards by the handful with a combination of acid, harpoons, sonic attacks, and a hungry bulette. When Echo takes a critical hit that deafens him (thus also blinding him), we declare emergency evacuation as I manage to acid spit the guard to save Echo, Howler massacres the city guards, and Earthmaw smashes his way inside of our objective building. I manage to lead echo inside, and defend the breached wall Earthmaw made while he blocks the entrance (he weighs the most by 3x).

Howler and the newly-recovered Echo search the building for signs of another sublevel, but are unable to find anything. Its then when the building gets lit on fire and things get even more serious. The city elite and mageguard have joined a ragtag bands of adventurers in pursuit of us, and more are likely coming from the city's center. The building gets hit again by an explosion, and Earthmaw takes a hard hit in the collapse of half the roof as the door gets smashed in. Howler does battle 1 on 1 with a flying mage on the burning rooftop of the building, as Earthmaw and I fight the first pair of elite guards. Echo pops his first gem ability (a knockback cone), and scatters the wave of guards trying to pour in the breach, but we're flanked with the door broken down and have to flee further into the building after some brutal AoOs.
    >> Red Crawler 02/23/08(Sat)23:55 No.1221950
My acid on the wooden floor mixed with Earthmaw's 600+ pound leaping breaks us through into the main floor (the area behind the building is lower than the way we came in), and things are looking grim when we find what we're looking for, a wooden plank with our Master's symbol on it along with the name of the guy who presumably built the building and left the family’s mark.

But Howler is still on the roof, fuck. Since I can climb, i make my way back up top and rely on my rusting carapace to protect me, I jump into the crowd and pop my final void carapace, ripping the life out of 5 people. I’m feeling pretty confident until I get hit by a lighting bolt that knocks me to half health immediately.

By this point i'm panicking and i yell to howler, who jumps back down with a still-living mage pinned onto his back. Using my gem strike, i stun the lightning mage and he takes a rough sonic lance from Echo playing fire support in the basement weakening him enough that he backs off. We finally convene in the basement, and go 4 v 7 against some House guards and citizens.

(sry i keep typing basement because it was on a lower floor)

    Howler uses his harpoons to drag down the remaining ceiling on top of 2 of the guards (and a minor collateral hit on Echo), and one of the citizens swings his sword in a whirlwind, taking off one of Earthmaw's legs, cutting into Echo's left claw, and hacking weakly into my side (damn improved rust, he should have hit me first!). Howler spears the (Vorpal sword wielding?) fighter and throws him to the side, stepping on the plank in the process. The gem in his foot touches the plank, and we all feel lighter as we teleport to our relief. Earthmaw is magically wounded, missing a foot, and at 4 hp. I have 26. Echo is at 9, and is missing half a hand. Howler is at a healthy 55. In what might be a new dungeon. With nothing to heal us besides their eating and my devour metal abilities. ;_;

Story so awesome. This is everything that tabletop RPs do better then video games.

You should talk your DM into arranging all the background information necessary for running this and putting it up on the internet...after you finish your game.

Namefaggotry is acceptable here, you're the OP.
Anyways, really entertaining, and now I want to run a game like this for our party.
The closest we got to this was in some campaign we failed to stop a cult, there was an explosion, and we all became undead. We got distracted by a different game because the matches kinda sucked (zombie rogue for the lose).

Thanks to this thread, I've been pondering a possible script for an animated film. Obviously, it'd be a little more light hearted and kid friendly. A group of monsters in a dungeon are changed when their evil lord is destroyed by heroes. They go out into the world for the first time for revenge, only to find that there's so much more they could do and be...

Now the question is, could I change it about enough to make it legally distinct from Dungeons and Dragons?
