Dear /tg/, I have taken to myself the project of making a chaos army for Apoc, or a traitor Guard army with the odd CSM and daemon thrown in.
While I have the schemes and look of my army pretty much figured, there is one important thing it still lacks.
It lacks the pure awesomeness that is the feeling of loyalist IG. The WE WIN THIS DAY OR WE DIE STANDING! THERE IS NO RETREAT! -feeling.

so /tg/, how do I make my traitor guard anywhere near as epic as the Cadian 412th and the other great guys?

PS: Their fluff hook is fall to chaos thanks to word bearers.
    >> Anonymous 03/10/08(Mon)16:25 No.1312074
They just need to have a firm trust in Chaos. THE GODS SEE OUR ACTIONS TODAY, THEIR HANDS SHALL PROTECT US!

or then the guard could just belive NO LOYALISTS YOU ARE THE TRAITORS! and then the Ultramarines were chaos.

Perhaps a regiment led by a tactically brilliant but completely insane general? Like Sturhn crossed with Kurtz from Apocalypse Now. The men would all worship him as a godlike being, there would be cultists sacrificing animals (or humans for the GRIMANDARK factor) to him. He could have come under Word Bearer influence due to a gradual disillusionment and realization of the immense hypocricy of the Imperium.

    OP here.
My original plot was that there were two leading military figures on their homeplanet.
Ones motto was "Put faith in the Emperor, he shall guide your men"
The others was "Put faith in your men, the Emperor shall protect them if need be"
The governor liked general #1 better, and when the space marines (not like General Joe Backwater could even KNOW what chaos marines are. To him they were holy men of legends) arrived, General #2 took their advice on attacking the governor and the other general as they were traitors.
Then began the over-time reteaching to full chaos.

    But I like this one.

That his wounds overcame him, and that his life left him, that all that remains is a corpse kept breathing by those false prophets, the Tech Priests. I say no. I say the Emperor lived. I say that he crawled, broken, bloodied, and beaten from head to toe, but he lived, though it took his strength and foul Sanguinus combined just to face the wrath of Horus. Yes, the Emperor lives, even to this day, his wounds long since recovered. He lives, and he hides, uncaring, unmoved, and utterly afraid. The Emperor of man cowers on his golden throne, and his people rot, starve, and die, their cries unanswered. I say the Emperor lives, and that he lives and does not answer his people is only proof that he does not care. Look then to the blessed lords of Chaos, and what do you see? Theirs is true power, theirs is to demand, and command, to desire the very best of us. Those that fail, die, because only the strong deserve the serve the glory of the Chaos gods. The Emperor of man cares not for those that serve him, only that they serve, but the lords of Chaos answer every infraction, crush every failure. What would you rather? To die for an old, foolish, uncaring coward, and let your soul be forever lost, or to die for the great gods of Chaos, and let you soul, be it truly worthy, ascend to serve in the legions of the gods? So this day we fight, and we die, and we give the very best of ourselves. For Chaos! For victory! And to show those worthless dogs of the Imperium that their 'glorious Emperor' has truly abandoned them!"

They hear it and to them it makes perfect sence.

On the final hours of the Eclipsion rebellion, the lord governor of the capital planet watched as his men were fighting a desperate losing defence. Behind him stood the last general still loyal and alive, the planetary warlord Franz Scipius. Ever devoted to the emperor, the pious man placed his hand on the governors shoulder, asking him to stay true to the Emperor. The governor slowly shook his head. His faith in the Emperor had died alongside his men. The sight of brother fighting brother, as if men charging headlong into a twisted bloodied mirror, had long since eaten away his sanity. The governor stepped up onto the railing of is palaces balcony. He looked into the bloodstorm that was the distant sky. "What are you doing, Governor?" wasked Scipius. The answer was simple. "I am ending this". The governor was still in mid-fall as a las-charge pierced his head. To Scipius, coward were an abomination.

Scipius holstered his pistol and turned. In the hall behind him was standing his oldest friend, General Scorpius, now better known as the Bloodlord of Eclipsion. Scipius knew that his friend was no more than a traitor. He charges wait power-sword lifted high and impaldes the traitors heart in a single thrust. "This nightmare is over", claimed Scipius. "No. For you, the nightmare is only beginning", replied the bloodied form of the Governor, now impaled on the powersword, las.wound still bleeding.

All along the planet, a faint mist gathered, as the Word Bearers began to set up their places of worship...

It is said the Commissars of these traitors have long since died, ripped asunder in a vengeful orgy by their own men. But after the Word Bearers began to indoctrinate the poor men further, they recognized their folly in destroying their leaders and erected shrines to them.

They can be seen pulled behind the ranks of Guardsmen. Massive scarecrows, the tattered hat and coat of a commissar upon a wooden cross, the large, ragged banners of the army flying behind them. The Commissars are long gone now, but when a guardsman begins to doubt, begins to fear...

All the others see is a flash of a lasgun and the coward crumpling to a heap on the ground.

    >> Anonymous 03/10/08(Mon)20:24 No.1313265
The legions of tainted guardsmen are preceded by their stench. The rotting of a decaying corpse and the iron smell of blood. Over the rise comes a massive cross, tethered to a squad of shuffling guardsmen who throw their entire weight into moving the massive shrine.

The enemy steadily approaches, no matter the incoming fire, calmly marching and returning the assault. Those that fall stay down only for so long... then they rise again and fall back into line, perhaps clutching their severed arm or dragging a shattered leg.

Through the din of battle a wheeze can be heard and the eyeglasses of their gasmasks are fogged. If one is unfortunate enough to enter a melee with them, they are overpowered by the stench of corpses and every cut sends chunks of puss covered, rotting meat out from their tattered uniforms.

After the battle, lingerers can see shapes crawling out from the corpse pyres, shrugging the flame from themselves and shouldering a weapon. They all walk away, unharmed, disappearing in the distance in waves and shimmers as if they were a mirage.

My own personal IG army are traitors, but rather than being turned into frothing lunatics like so many others seem to, they've been corrupted by the Alpha Legion, and are, if anything, even more disciplined and strictly regimented than they were before. They have nothing but disdain for those who put their trust in distant and uncaring gods, whether those gods be the Emperor, or the Ruinous Powers. One of their favourite pastimes is to listen out for distress calls from out of the way Imperial worlds, answer them, then when it's over royally fuck the inhabitants over - releasing vast clouds of poison gas into the atmosphere, triggering a melt down of a hive's power-core, that sort of thing
    >> Anonymous 03/10/08(Mon)20:39 No.1313301
There are men who have survived the horror that is the Eclipsion guard. I have sat down in a local tavern and talked to a man who wore a ragged uniform and a strange mask, as if a second, scarred face had been melted over his own. The man seemed normal. He talked about his home and his service to the Emperor. He lingered in the tavern long. After I left the tavern, all the streets were empty. The tavern was locked and the only thing that could be heard in the silence was the panting of daemons. Yet they were no daemons. They were my old friends and brothers in arms, long dead, or still alive, twisted and warped into inhuman beasts and abominations.
Cowardice is for the weak, but I ran. I ran and ran. At long last I was out of there, back among my men. But when I looked back, I still saw the man from the tavern. He had never worn a mask. He stood there, watching as we left. In his eyes we were the beasts, and he was the pure. And he knew the impure have to be clensed.

"Hold the line! Damn it all, hold the line!"

Our Sergeant disappeared in a mass of writhing limbs as their men collided with ours. The masked horrors in their tattered uniforms came at us with more determination than I've ever seen mustered from the guard... and more ferocity. They savagely struck him with the stocks of their rifles, pounding and pounding away until he was a disfigured paste in the mud, then they turned to us.

I saw one, nothing but a torn sleeve for an arm and his lasgun desperately clutched his remaining hand. His gasmask was hanging by two straps, and I could see the rotting skin. It looked like he'd been dead for weeks, months.

We stared at them, they stared back, and over the rippling of gunfire and the cadence of artillery, we heard one of them hiss, "Why? Why?" They began to shuffle towards us and we stumbled backwards, they came faster, faster, until we were stumbling and banging into one another in a mad dash towards the man troop. I heard a crack behind me and turned in time to see PFC Reynolds reach towards me with horror on his face before being trampled into the red mud underneath their heels. Several lingered behind... I know what they were doing. I saw what they had done.

After we were routed, we came back to the battlefield. Each and every one of them was gone. Not their corpses, not even any equipment was left behind. The only thing that let us know what had just happened was even real was collected at the center of the battlefield.

It was a mass of bodies and what remained of them, piled high; all of their faces were taught with agony and terror and their hands grasped outwards for help. A massive pole was driven in the center of the pile, the dogtags of the poor bastards strung on it like decoration.

We turned to the Commissar, pleading, looking for something definite in this chaos. He was always our anchor, no matter the scene he was there to raise a pistol and bellow orders. I wish he had killed himself, or if he killed some of us for our heresy. Anything. But instead, he was on his knees in the mud with tears streaming down his face, his expression was one of such terrible loss and agony...

I turned my back on the Emperor that day, on humanity. They came for me in my sleep, tugging that mask on as I tried to struggle... but I learned to cope with my new burden, embrace it. I would free my fellow men from their oppressive reality.

-Light Infantry (for infiltration, appearing out of nowhere as the otherworld rolls in over the area)

nurgle at first seems like the right choice, but they'd have to be all rotten which works but might not be best for this company.

Oh, and I'm well aware of the Doctrines being able to mimic some of the Chaos powers; it's just that they aren't supernatural/scary enough on the tabletop if we did so.

Loyal to the Emperor as they curse his name under their breath.

Pressing ever onwards beneath the ragged, towering effigies they drag behind them. Or at least, for those men for whome the commisar was not the first reborn. The men who tore apart their leaders and live forever beneath the unblicking vision of a wrathful man of straw are the lucky ones.

No Nurgle, Slaanesh, or Tzeentch. All Khorne.

These are soldiers. Silent Hill is about violence and blood and death. Even the sexualised monsters like the nurses or the abstract daddy are sexual in a purely murderous way, without the sensuality or hedonism of Slaanesh. Plus, everything red and rusty and brass.

Now normally I don't like Khorne, he's my least favourite chaos power, but this is a great way to depict Khornate forces.

Tzeentch is the most viable option, his plans are mysterious enough to be open ended to this kind of thing and we know he has the power.

Silent Hill is about each person's personal demons, so how about each guardsman is possessed by a demon created by his own mind?

Or the entire army is being effected by one powerful psyker who is twisting the whole army as an extension of his tormented nightmares? If you're going with the faceless guardsmen design then it could be because the psyker saw the hordes of nameless soldiers die and is a reflection of his impersonal feelings to them.

How about the psyker in question was a child, the child of the planetary Governor, who had been sheltered from the horrors of war only to be flung into them headfirst when the Chaos Marines took him in? And so, everyone on the planet is forced to play a part in the twisted nightmare that the psyker's mind creates, all due to Word Bearer propaganda?

How about the kid psyker was born from some failed experiment meant to emulate the Emperor's own birth. The heretical cult pulled together the greatest psykers from across the segmentum, in great secrecy, and had them surround a woman ready to give birth. At the stroke of midnight, in perfect unison, each psyker commited ritualistic suicide, and their souls entered the unborn child by way of chaotic litanies and sigils designed to prevent their loss to Tzeentch.

The child was born, infused with all these amazing powers, at cost of a severely warped, deformed mind. He was required to be kept away, kept under strict mental domination, schooled and prepared for the day he'd take over the reign of the planet from the puppets installed by the Imperium.

Then the Word Bearers attacked. His mental guards were killed.

The last thing anyone on the planet ever saw was a sky raining blood and faces screaming and crying from the walls.

The Imperium still notes the entire system as "barren, wasted, fires from deep within the crusts of each world still smouldering after a thousand years"

    On modelling
-I'll probably base the army off the IG infantry I have atm, but throw in ragged masks and stuff.
-there have been many mentions of using greatcoats. The WFB flagellants have ragged robes. perhaps a mix of Flagellant bitz and IG bitz would provide cool results.

He should start the game with a regular guardsman army. Nothing new, nothing special, just make sure everything still does the proper counts-as shit.

He should also have a tape-player and a timer with him as well. Set the timer for about 2 hours.

When the timer goes off, play the tape player, which has an extremely loud air raid siren, and start changing all the models and the removable scenery on the map into the SH Guard counterparts.

The rest of the game is played in Silent Hill.

The stormtroopets of the Irian 25th had been infiltrating their way across the nightmare world of Eclipsion for weeks. They had found the location of the Eclipsion main temple, the source of all the psycic disturbance in the region. Supplies were low, time was of the essence.

As the stormtroopers entered the temple from a large window, they saw the most blasted, horrible hellscape of architecture imaginable. From within, the temple was as if the Imperial Palace itself had fallen to chaos and sat stagnating corruption for millenia. Twisted, bleeding statues of daemons formed a massive corridor leading into the heart of the temple. The stormtroopers moved cautiously, but as they reached a larger hall, the doors slammed shut and a massive, twisted mutant dropped upon them. It was a beast of tortured flesh, an image of uncaring hate. The beast ripped into the stormtroopers with inhuman fury but in the end, it was outnumbered and outclassed by the stormtroopers. Only three remained in fighting condition, the sergeant and his two best men.

The trio made their way forward, eventually reaching what was the very most infernal heart of the temple. A massive dome, in which the only light was that of the fires in braziers held by stone-faced daemons, housed a single altar. The stormtroopers could not see the far reaches of the dome but they knew it was both impossibly large and mid-blowingly impressive.

Next to the altar, stood a small figure. As the stormtroopers approced, the figure did not turn. It spoke in a soft, yet shattered tone, as if it was a small boy who had cried for ages. The figure was fondling a bloodied head, and spoke to it. As the sergeant reached the figure, it turned, revealing itself to indeed be a young boy.

"Have you come to speak to me?" the boy asked.
"What is a child like you doing in a place like this?" asked the sergeant. "It's dangerous"
"I'm here because I'm safe here. I'm here to play with dad and to keep the dream alive" the boy replied.
"Who told you to stay here?" demanded the sergeant.
"Dad did. And the good lord will keep me safe here. Away from all those who would want to hurt me". The boy nodded towards the lifeless bloodied head.
The sergeant stood back up. He was dumbfounded by the innocent look and the trust in the boy. He turned to leave, but the doorway was blocked by a large winged figure. In its hands, the corpses of his men. On its face, a grin signaling that he was next. The child watched the slaughter, slowly petting his fathers head. Smiling. The evil men had been punished for what they had done. The dream would live on.

I seriously can't decide if a rust throne is creepier than a bloody altar.
    >> Anonymous 03/11/08(Tue)07:23 No.1316190
    >>1316185

It might just be me, but a bloody altar seems really overdone when writers attempt unsettling scenes, while the rust throne is something somewhat new and still offers that really creepy, "this kid's the Chaotic emperor" Word Bearers' ideal that works amazingly well for this kind of setting.

    yea, true
I picked the altar originaly because it was the most Silent Hilly one.

For be it from me to make you change everything, but we don't want to make everything EXACTLY like silent hill. Silent Hill is all about the perversion of reality in the nightmares of the main villain - in this case, the planet is the home of a new empire, which has been pounded into his head from infancy. He's the New Emperor. He's been told of the False Emperor's home on Terra and his Golden Throne, and of all the trappings and guards around that throne from one of hte men who'd visited Terra before he fell to Chaos.

He keeps twisted analogies of the Adepta Custodes and Sisters of Silence as his bodyguards, and his room is a twisted, rusted form of the Palace in Terra.

Least that's how I think it'd work best.

thats kinda waht I aimed to do, exept i forgot to add a throne and went for the altar.
The daemon represents the new emperors desire to be protected, and also serves as a mockery to the Adpetus Custodes.

This needs some kind of analogous Pyramid Head + retinue of Butchers to act as a broodlord and genestealers.
Afc as the point is AWESOME not point-effective, they'd be pumped on upgrades to make them cool enough.

What could a Pyramidhead and Butchers be in Eclipson?

Oh god, I'd think Sanguinius would be a Pyramid head, but he'd have to be a pumped up Daemon Prince.

Perhaps the Imperial Guard regimental commander for Eclipsion?

I'd like the Eclipsion commander to be that general that executed the Governor and the other general for heresy. He is one of the few of the Eclipsion population that didn't become a puppet in the pseudo-Starchild's dream, but he still went sort of insane. Now he preaches the anti-Imperial creed to his faceless armies, and the few still sentient humans cling to him like lost children.

Scipius was the Emperor-loving general who shot the governor and then succumbed to the nightmare
Scorpius was the trust-your-men general who allied with the Word Bearers to create the Eclipsion guard

So Pyramid Head (we need to think of some other helmet than the obvious Pyramid. Needs to be more subtle) is Scipius?

And Scorpius is still "alive" and leading the guard.

His Giant Butcher Knife is an Eviscerator, and in his other hand, he carries a giant staff with a tattered, bloodstained Regimental Primer that's been defaced with chaotic symbols of the pseudo-Starchild.

He's replaced his original hat with a looted space marine helmet that's been covered with several layers of jury-rigged armor.

He went blind ever since he was brought before the Eclipsion Emperor. He has no need for mundane sight, as the boy psyker's horrible truths still remain emblazoned in his mind.

So the Terror Guard would have 2 elements, the monstrous troops and the more human ones that fear the dream but cannot leave it? And you'd start the battle with the human troops but swap them out for monsters as the psychic emanations of their prayers draw the presence of the pseudo-Starchild and his nightmare reality into the battlefield?

You know what this would be great as? The plot hook for a tournament. Set it on Eclipsion Prime, have the warp child be the objective, have primarily IG (loyal and traitor), =I= or marine armies vs Chaos, Eldar (there's always eldar where there's psychic bullshit), and maybe Orks or Nids for the lulz.

    Alright, here're my thought:

Primarily, I'd recommend cutting off a small portion of each models neck, thus making them weirdly angled and perfectly SHish.

Secondly, I'd also recommend a very thin film of either greenstuff or something else on just the face of your normal guard model. Cut a bit in it, but generally keep the 'second skin/plastic bag on head' feel as it reeks of Silent Hill 2.

Finally, as for whatever Force of Chaos they follow, some people said Chaos Undivided, which is fucking correct. I'd say they're leaning more towards Khornish Slaanesh, with perhaps the more thinking commanders being Tzeentch, and a thick layer of Nurgle on top of it all.

    My ten cents. tl;dr
