142 KB Imperial Guard vs. Zombies Anonymous 04/04/08(Fri)18:23 No.1472133
Simple scenario. The munitorium resived an emergency call from a backwater world, simliar in environment to Earth (how it original was) and sends out two or three Platoons to help the people there.

When they arrive they quickly find out that a Romero like zombie situation has broken out.

How, do you think, will it all end?
    >> Anonymous 04/04/08(Fri)18:24 No.1472136
Actually, Nurgle has pulled this kind of shit with Plague zombies.

They need to write a 40k zombie book.

    Hmm.
    >> Anonymous 04/04/08(Fri)18:25 No.1472145
2-3 platoons? That's like... 170-ish men. A bit small to even warrant a transport ship. Even if it was some little backwater, you could at least expect a company or two, supported by a few tanks and sentinels.

Zombies in 40k are usually caused by one of two things:

    Nurgle, which means the Grey Kngihts would be all over that shit if an entire world was taken over, or;

Genetic plague, which would probably warrant Exterminatus.

As for the Guard, for all that they get shit on, any given Guard regiment is an eltie unit on its homeworld, composed of the top-tier PDF units. They could handle something like this well enough, thouhg frankly I don't see the point. Just bomb the place to ruins from orbit and start over with a new imported population from a Hive world.
    >> That Damn Mouse 04/04/08(Fri)19:51 No.1472543
Hmm...if the Zombies need to be shot in the head to be killed, then how well can the IG shoot?

    I mean, really?

If it were 'Night Of The Living Dead' Zombies, nothing short of complete physical destruction would stop them.
    >> Anonymous 04/04/08(Fri)19:54 No.1472553
    >>1472543
Well enough. And bear in mind a large part of the danger in a zombie movie is from the lack of ammo, mobility and equipment; if you arrived with the supplies to wage a six-month war on your dropship in orbit and have effectively infinite ammo, as well as land and air transport, then you could just laugh them off. Even guard can get enough headshots to kill a zombie, and with so much ammo they don't even need to- they can afford to blow all the limbs off.
    >> Disciple of Xom 04/04/08(Fri)19:54 No.1472554
    >>1472543

I'm pretty sure plasma guns, las cannons and assorted meltas and flamers could clean up even the toughest of zombie stains
    >> Anonymous 04/04/08(Fri)19:59 No.1472571
    >>1472543
If they're using lasguns, they vaporize the limb/chunk that it hits. Its not like a bullet where the zombie becomes a fleshy bag of lead or it flies right through them, the zombie VAPORIZES.
    >> Anonymous 04/04/08(Fri)20:14 No.1472648
Lasguns would clean up nicely, being lasweapons they hit right where you point them. Wouldnt slice off limbs in a single shot but that single shot will go right through a person, burning a rather noticeable hole.
And considering they recharge by light and warmth, they're not going to be running out of ammo any time soon.

Though for a simple investigative raid the Imperium would probably just send stormtroopers. More available than marines and doing a lot of the same special forces type work.
Which armed with the better hotshot lasguns as well as a variety of other weapons makes them more akin to the Colonial Marines of Aliens, and would in all probability fare quite well. At least long enough to find out whats going on, and call for backup if needed.

Yanno, is it just me or could this make quite an interesting campaign/scenario? More of a 'regular crap going on in the Imperium that has to be dealt with' feeling to it.
    >> Dr. Baron von Evilsatan 04/04/08(Fri)20:36 No.1472750
They'd probably be fine. The Imperial Guard are actually skilled and experienced soldiers, as compared to PDF regiments, and the sheer slaughterific nature of the battles they fight means that their veterans are very, very good. They've got the discipline and Commissars to get in, find out what's going on, and get out.

They'd make a call to the Inquisition, who would probably send one Inquisitor. A crappy backwater does not deserve or warrant much else. Said Inquisitor would probably take some IST's, who are on par with Doomguy in terms of skill, and find the heart of the infestation, which they would probably succeed in doing given that this is a regular occurence for them. If it's something they can kill then, they kill it. If it's something beyond one squad, they call up the whole lot and kill it.If it's a very powerful daemon, one beyond the whole lot's ability to kill, they call up the Grey Knights and they kill it, or if they can't get them they destroy that continent from orbit and instigate zombie countermeasures on the other continents in case it was airborne.

Based on observations made in Gaunt's Ghosts, a las does about the damage of a fifty-cal. Any troops from a properly-trained IG regiment (read: almost everyone but conscripts) would absolutely slaughter zombies.

The fact of the matter is that Guardsmen fight much, much worse things than shamblers.
    >> Anonymous 04/04/08(Fri)20:59 No.1472834

I think it would be an interesting concept for there to be a backwater Imperial world that gets cut off durring a warp storm or somesuch and a massive zombie outbreak manifests. The troops already stationed there have to try and protect the survivors and and whatnot while the zombies numbers simply grow.
    >> Anonymous 04/05/08(Sat)04:44 No.1475005
    >>1474005
That's something. In zombie stories, there's always some pussyfooting around about wether or not it's right to kill a guy who has been bit, and like six or seven other people get bit as a result.
The minute the commissar finds out that the dead come back to life, he's headshotting everyone who gets scratched without further thought or remorse.
Keep in mind, the commissar's day job is basically headshotting guardsmen anyway. That's why he has a bolt pistol as standard armament; punches right through the back of the flak helmet.
    >> Anonymous 04/05/08(Sat)08:10 No.1475600
    >>1472648
    Hellguns, not hotshots
Hotshot cells are the power packs Hellguns and sniper-variant lasguns use; they pack a lot more punch but have less shots per pack than an ordinary cell.

Also: By and large the IG are fucking hardasses, do not confuse them with untrained hicks handed a gun and a metal shirt. Most people confuse the IG's level of expertise with that of PDF regiments; where the PDF are volunteers with a weapon and minimal training, most IG are professional, expert soldiers. The only reason everyone rags on the Guard so much is because they're sent to fight shit like EIGHT FOOT NIGH-UNKILLABLE GREEN MONSTERS THAT FEEL NO FEAR.

Have you ever seen the zombies in the Dawn of the Dead remake? Those suckers run like hell and don't even feel fatique.

On another note the book World War Z tells storys on how tribal societys which made more use of hand to hand combat had been more capable of fighting zombies, while half of the US army got slaughtered live on TV in New York, because all theire high tech equickment and modern warfare tactics proofed to be useless against the zombie hordes (who needs stealth bombers against creatures which don't even have weapons?).

Comparing this with the Imperial Guard, it even more proofes them to be capable of handling a zombie situation, since the Guard often trains theire soldiers in "modern" combat tactics as well as in old fashioned firing line tactics.
Not to forget how many of them carry chain swords and simliar weapons.
Nearly all Imperial vehicles have CIWS's, Chimeras and LR battle tanks would be able to move through zombie mobs with ease.
And if necesary they can still order theire man to put on flak armor on the arms and necks (even flak armor is strong enough to handle a zombie bit), since thats were most characters in those movies get bitten in.

Eclipsion is pretty intriguing. It seems like it would work well if I can write it in a creepy fashion.

My biggest problem here though is that I don't know the various Guard regiments well. Which one would they send in for a zombie invasion? I'll look it up and hopefully I'll be able to get a grasp of how the guardsman should be.

you didn't read the book very closely, did you?
The very reasons you stated are WHY they failed so hard.
Auto weapons? Only headshots work, not spraying bullets into the center of mass like the military is trained to do.
Armored weapons and aircrafts? again, only HEADSHOTS work. The shrapnel from any explosion as a relatively small change of destroying the head. And since they don't feel pain, the fire and shrapnel that does hit them doesn't matter. Sure they burn, but that takes time.

Where as the tribesmen? Go up and bash 'em on the head. Thats how they've ALWAYS done things, but now they have to be a little more careful.

The only way to put zombies down is to destroy the brain, modern military tactics do not focus on destroying the brain. They focus on wounding the enemy or killing him via blood loss and so on. Note that zombies do not bleed.

Mass nuking might have worked, but then again zombies are immune to radiation and they'd probably crawl out of the wasteland looking for brains.

No, they don't. But then, why would you use current tactics to fight off a zombie horde? Unless in every single encounter from beginning to end of the war no-one realises that they're zombies, and no-one ever tries shooting them in the head (which would be the obvious thing to do- the only reason you don't go for headshots in modern warfare is the low chance to hit. If your target is stumbling along an open field, you can hit the head without all that much difficulty). It just smacks of plot nerf.

    DYNAMIC ENTRY

"Hey, Isaac, watch this." Caison said.
"What?" returned his fellow guardsman over the moans.
"I said, watch this!" he yelled. Taking his cigarette with his free hand, he waited for a few seconds.
The shambling thing continued to move closer, unaware that it stumbled over the corpses of hundreds, thousands of its brothers.
Caison waited, waited... the corpse surged forward--he slid to one side, an instep into the enemy's guard, smooth as the textbook procedure.
The zombie's groans didn't change a bit as he neatly planted his cigarette, tip first, into the springy, spongelike flesh of its forehead. He gave it a little push from behind and it kept going. Snickering, he aimed his lasgun behind him and casually incinerated another as it took the last's place.
Isaac roared with laughter as he put his gauntlet through another one's brain. "That's great! Hey, hey, guys! Look at Li'l Smokey over here!"
Li'l Smokey stumbled a few more steps before a half-dozen guardsmen incinerated him on the count of three.
This was the life, thought Caison, passing his pistol to his other hand to reach for his beer. He would have to pants regional commissars more often.

"HE GOING TO KILL US" said the deadites

How does a zombie keep moving if it's spine's been broken? Wouldn't it just flop around? Also why does every organ in a zombie become non-vital except for the brain? If there's no blood pumping or nerves transmitting, it's just a sponge filled with coagulated blood.

As a matter of fact, someone DID make an Ash Williams in 40K miniature. If you look around in google, perhaps you can find it.
