'Sup, /tg/. A couple of days ago, people expressed some interest in hearing the further adventures of my paladin/sorcerer and her tsundere redeemed Erinyes flunky. Since the DM's also been bugging me to do a writeup of this particular battle, here it is.

The party had recently joined up with a small legion of celestials in the midst of the desert, who were fighting to contain a diabolical invasion that was pouring forth from a hidden portal in some ancient gnome ruins lost amidst the sands (gnomes in this setting are akin to Morrowind's Dwemer - the entire race was annihilated by all the Gods combined at the conclusion of an apocalyptic war centuries ago when their leader found a source of power that put him well above any deity). The celestials were based out of an oasis, but both headquarters were shrouded in illusions and anti-scrying/teleporting wards, leaving both sides to play cat and mouse in skirmishes across the desert while being unable to force a decisive battle.

We arrived somewhat late to proceedings, having been distracted by our kingdom being invaded by its larger neighbour after the Emperor found a tiny fraction of the power possessed by the Gnomish God-King and promptly went insane (our own kingdom sits atop many of the most important gnome ruins and was once a province of the attacking empire, so made a natural target). A bit of regicide later and we finally got around to combating the Baatezu invasion.

After joining up, we fought in several battles around the desert while attempting to find the devil's base, and by wiping out several of their strongest lieutenants, we were steadily pushing them back, before we were finally able to locate where they were coming from and mount a final offensive.

But, before I get into that, a little background on the players involved. While numerous celestials were taking part in the overall battle, the vast majority were handwaved, but there were several NPCs fighting directly alongside the party.

On the PC side, we had my own character, a Human Paladin/Sorcerer/Spellsword, and the other two PCs - one a Human Lawful Neutral Paladin/Fighter/Kensai, and the other a True Neutral (her alignment's changed on a regular basis, so she finally settled on neutrality) Half-Elf Wizard/Rogue/Arcane Trickster who's now taking some sort of Half Dragon class (like Dragon Disciple if it were compressed into 3 levels).

For the attached NPCs, we had the reformed Erinyes (who has lost all her spell-likes, retrained all her archery feats into melee ones, and taken a level in Hellreaver), a SRD standard Astral Deva (one of the angels that my paladin and her assassin sister had rescued from Hell), and an Elf Fighter/Duskblade (flunky of the dragon wannabe - he used to be human but got killed by Bearded Devils ages ago so we used our reincarnate scroll on him).

PCs are all level 11, but hilariously wealthy for their level. I've got an intelligent holy weapon I grabbed from the Halls of the Vanquished, the rogue/wizard has an artifact sword she liberated from the evil emperor we killed just before this, and the kensai has an artifact shield we found ages ago in another gnomish ruin.

Anyway, on to the battle. The party had been pretty far away when they got word of the devil's base being discovered, and arrived to find the battle in full swing. The gnomish ruins had been built into a vast plateau in the desert, and we arrived just as dawn was breaking to provide an impressive view of the melee as devils poured out of various openings to engage the heavenly host already present - deva and erinyes clashed in the skies, while charges of hound archons clashed with lines of steel devils and barbazu.

Charging into the fray, our group focused on the central redoubt before what looked to be the biggest entrance into the cliffside. Casting See Invisibility, the Astral Deva and I both focused on attacking invisible Dogai that were lurking around the melee, while the other paladin and duskblade both charged into the main line of devils, cleaving the lesser fiends apart with ease. Meanwhile the Erinyes cohort and dragon wannabe flew overhead to attack the Gelugon that seemed to be marshalling this particular line of defence.

It took a few rounds, but after slaying the assassin devils and ice devil, along with a whole slew of their minions, this first line broke apart and fled... leaving us wide open for the attacks of diabolical siege engines that had been placed farther back. As arrows and screaming boulders of hellfire and brimstone rained around us, we had no time to recover and were forced to immediately rush the second line of defence, this one more formidable, with numerous Orthons on a raised palisade with ample cover, while a pair of Ice Devils held the line alongside Barbazu.

And then, when we got closer, the Deva and I were both able to see the invisible Cornugon laying in wait directly above the fortified line of fiends.

    Continued:

Spending just a moment to cast Fly, my paladin led the charge to attack the Cornugon before it could have its way with those who couldn't see it, though she at least had time to cast True Strike while giving the slower landbound party members a chance to catch up.

Then she rolled a fucking 1 on her attack. This is exactly what happened with her first attack against the Duke of Hell who nearly killed her in Stygia, so it hardly gave much optimism for how the battle would turn out. Fortunately she was able to stand up to its retaliation, and after becoming visible it took a pair of solid hits from the Erinyes and Deva before its turn rolled round again.

It was while attacking that it made the mistake of introducing itself, claiming to be a Knight of the Nine Circles, and Baronet of the souls of lost children. I had been planning to ration my resources carefully for the inevitable boss fight at the portal itself, but since my paladin's own son had been murdered years ago, this seemed like a perfect invitation to kick reason to the curb and go past the impossible.

Wraithstrike + 6 points of to hit spent on power attack + 7 spell levels sacrificed on arcane strike x 4 attacks, one of which critted.

Gibbed that fucker into fiendish kibble.

(as an aside, the DM finally decided to ban wraithstrike after this adventure. It was an appropriate swansong for such an awesome spell)

Seeing the evisceration of the Cornugon seemed to take the fight right out of the devils present, prompting most to immediately teleport away while the others retreated back into the fortress itself under covering fire from the Orthons.

    Continued:

Finally penetrating the ruins themselves, we encountered far lighter resistance at this point, only a few orthons manning a barricade ahead, which were easily overcome. Then, taking point, I happened to fall through an illusory floor (gnomish ruins are full of those damn things, I've noticed), seeing a great hall far below lined with giant statues of gnomes (yes, I commented on the irony) which were covered with Spined Devils.

Then I remembered I could fly, so I went back up and helped everyone else negotiate the hidden pit-trap and advance onwards. The next encounter was rather odd, as we found a very long staircase with a large troop of skeletons marching up. Disrupting the overall epic feel of the adventure, we sat and twiddled our thumbs for a moment and waited as they marched unfailingly into the wall of boiling water we set right in front of them, the encounter only livened up with a surprise attack from an assassin devil on our flank.

Moving on, we reached the bottom and were confronted with another Ice Devil, and some sort of advanced ogre-sized Beard Devil. Along with a dozen Erinyes behind a wall who were cheerfully sniping us through arrow-slits.

A web spell managed to remove the sniping problem as well as trap the Barbazu, giving our melee types time to kill the Gelugon while spells were dropped on the webbed up bearded devil to deal with it by the time the web had been burned up.
    >> Anonymous 04/26/08(Sat)17:19 No.1609512
    Continued:

Passing through the doorway between the arrow-slits, two of the Erinyes manning the barricade engaged us while their comrades fled. My own reformed Erinyes cohort tried to convince them to surrender, but was harshly rebuffed for the traitor she was. Then the dragon wannabe tried to convince them to become her servants before she killed them. Funnily enough, this did not go over well, and they were quickly killed.

After a brief argument where the other PCs wanted to chase the fleeing Erinyes down side corridors while I wanted to press on down the main hall which seemed more likely to lead to the portal, reason fortunately prevailed when a Lantern Archon caught up with us (most of the other celestials had fallen behind a while back) and told us that the other celestials were spreading out to battle the devils all over the fortress, but as we were closest to the portal we had to shut it down before reinforcements turned the tide of battle.

Rushing onwards, we found a lift leading downwards, which we got on with a great deal of reluctance - the Erinyes cohort declined entirely, choosing to fly down after us, since we'd all had several horrible experiences with these contraptions in other gnomish ruins, previously.

Her caution was well founded, but not for the expected reason of sudden movements knocking people off, instead we found ourselves cloaked in an illusion of a Hellish blizzard and accosted by a diabolical version of Yuki no Onna, who pummelled us with all sorts of nasty cold attacks. Defeating her was simple, but we found ourselves still being worn down by the damaging cold, until coordinating with the Erinyes still outside of the 'blizzard' helped us locate the source of the effect and dispel it.
    >> Anonymous 04/26/08(Sat)17:19 No.1609513
    Continued:

At the bottom of the lift shaft, we were confronted with a large doorway festooned with diabolical imagery and infernal writings, through which overwhelming evil radiated to my paladin's senses. Seemed like we were at our goal. Casting our last buff spells, we promptly kicked the door in and were confronted with the portal's final defences; two Ice Devils, two Amnizu, one Barbed Devil, one Erinyes, two Orthons, two Bearded Devils, two Malebranche, and a Barregon (the DM recently discovered Dicefreaks Gates of Hell material, from which he stole the latter).

Laying down a solid fog halfway across the room, I was able to stall the Gelugons, Gate Devils, and Barregon for a few rounds while everyone focused all their efforts on the titanic War Devils, who got the Duskblade down to 1hp before the Deva was able to rescue him with her carefully hoarded Heal SLA, but we killed them just as the Solid Fog was dispelled and the Ice Devils (of which there were now three) moved to flank us.

Most of the party went to fight this new threat, while myself and the Erinyes pushed ahead to engage the Hamatula, suffering a storm of arrows from the Orthons and evil Erinyes as we did so. No sooner had we slain it, however, than did one of the Ice Devils peel off to attack us - I kept it busy myself while the Erinyes flew over to deal with the archers, using its massive bulk for cover against their attacks.

The other two Gelugon found themselves blinded by the Holy Aura that the Deva had put on us, and after firing a few random cones of cold that had little effect, had no choice but to retreat, allowing the rogue/wizard to rush the Barregon while the others helped deal with the archers.
    >> Anonymous 04/26/08(Sat)17:20 No.1609514
    Continued:

The momentum of battle was clearly on our side - most of us were perilously low on hp, but all of the devil's heavy hitters had been killed or forced into retreat - the archers were whittling us down too slowly to have a major effect, and the Amnizu were uselessly fireballing the PC with evasion. The Barregon was still a mysterious threat, but mostly seemed to be tossing out debuffs and save or dies that we were fortunately saving against.

Still, after it got a targetted dispel on the rogue/wizard, she found herself suddenly in a far more precarious situation. Luckily help was at hand after I got sick of constantly missing the ice devil, a wraithstriked full attack finally killed it on the same round, giving me a chance to provide some relief. The Astral Deva got in there as well, killing one of the Amnizu with a holy smite and blinding the other (funnily enough, if the rogue hadn't had her Fly dispelled to make her drop to the ground, she'd have been caught in the effect as well), while the Erinyes charged the Barregon directly... and failed her save vs its Insanity aura.

With things hanging in the balance, I charged the Barregon with my single smite attack... and promptly missed. I at least made my save vs Insanity, but still suffered a hefty debuff just for proximity. Its retaliation crumbled against my Holy Aura granted Spell Resistance, and I blew all my remaining spells on Arcane Strike for my follow up full attack, outright telling the monster that I was laying everything I had on it.

It lived, its taunting voice telling me that everything I had still wasn't enough... as the rogue/wizard used her recast Thunderlance from 20 feet away on the opposite side I was on to sneak attack the Barregon, a final stab skewering its chest and killing it.
    >> Anonymous 04/26/08(Sat)17:20 No.1609516
    Continued:

After that we faced the portal itself, seeing a host of fiends approaching on the other side, led by the familiar sight of the huge ebony Osyluth that had nearly killed me on my last trip to Hell, Duke Agares. Fortunately I was prepared for this, and used a scroll of Dimensional Anchor to temporarily shut down the portal, giving us ample time to wreck it with a powerful anarchic hammer we'd brought along just for the job (it was party treasure found in the same ruins we found the other paladin's artifact shield, and we'd given it to the Duskblade for this adventure since none of the other fighter types could safely use it).

Okay, the reformed Erinyes cohort's pathetic babbling and frenzied attacks on the Deva did take some of the shine off our glorious victory when everyone else was trying to bask in the moment, but we were able to disarm and restrain her without any real harm being done, and she healed up nicely afterwards.

He took 57 good-aligned damage from the Erinyes on her charge (she has a spear with something like the Valourous enchantment on it) and another 19 from a Deva mace hit.

Still, yes, I did do a total of 185 damage to it from that full attack, before DR was applied. A fair chunk of it was Holy, anyway, since one of my sword's blades has that enhancement.

    >I'd say that's fucking redicious for level 11, but then again you are fighting some redicious demons. Aren't all those things way over your CR?

Looking at the opposition for the last battle alone...

    2x Bearded Devil - CR 5
    2x Amnizu - CR 7
    2x Orthon - CR 8
    1x Erinyes - CR 8
    1x Barbed Devil - CR 11
    2x Ice Devil - CR 13
    2x Malebranche - CR 14
1x Barregon - CR 17 (supposedly. Dicefreaks is iffy at the best of times, and the DM had changed it around a bit)

According to the SRD encounter calculator, that's a CR 20 encounter right there.

Of course, this wasn't the standard 4 person party that CR is based off, even before accounting for the fact that we're too rich.

    >How strong is your group except for the money? This is level 11 3.5 PCs?

Well, my PC is a fairly well optimised Paladin/Sorcerer/Human Paragon/Spellsword - I rolled decent stats and really built my PC around using arcane strike to go nova on a full attack to utterly rape anything that stays in melee with me, while human paragon gives me high tumble skills to avoid melee with stuff I don't want to fight.

The other Paladin is a Paladin/Fighter/Kensai who would be fairly decent and well rounded if not for the artifact shield which pushes his AC up way high so as to be nigh unhittable by most stuff we fight.

The Wizard/Rogue/Arcane Trickster/Dragon benefits from wizard spellcasting and her crazy half-dragon stat boosts. She's also vastly richer than the other two PCs, so has a lot more equipment to improve her survivability (she has better saves than the two paladins thanks to items with stacking mods). With her half dragon stat mods plus a couple of inherent boosts to Int that she's picked up, her spell DCs are pretty absurd.

Also we had the Astral Deva use its at-will Holy Aura SLA on us for every battle. That's +4 AC, +4 saves (for me, anyway, the other PCs have rings of protection and cloaks of resistance so they get less benefit comparatively) and SR 25 for every fight during that adventure.

I'd try to reform any devil that honestly surrendered to me and gave me the chance, like the erinyes did in this case, but I can only work with what I'm given - I can't really do much if the creature doesn't want to change on some level, and would rather die before submitting itself to a mortal do-gooder.

That said, being able to pass for human is a definite plus and makes it far easier to keep her around without causing a riot.

Still, back when she was pure evil and giving me some lip, I did threaten to try and take in a marilith to keep her company. Do they count as 'too pretty'?

Mariliths suffer from the 'mermaid problem'.

Alter Self, as the name implies, is a self-only spell.

Of course, as she's a Spellsword then she can use the Channel Spell ability to bypass that restriction, but that throws up all sorts of messed up images whereby the paladin has to stab the erinyes with her sword every time she wants the erinyes to... well, stab into her with 'his' temporary sword.

It would be far simpler for all concerned just to get a strap-on.

A few days ago someoen derailed an odd little thread, and it became a discussion of sex and paladins. Someone posited that a female paladin should be questing for an atrefact, meet up with a gorgon in the pursuit of said artefact - said gorgon having actualy very little to do with said artefact - and then in the process of continuing her quest, rescue said gorgon from death at the hands of merciless PCs. Gorgon-paladin lesbian sex was expected to ensue.

Then I read this. This story is very cool, and I don't want a repeat of the Jean-Xenophila incident.

A side not of which, I was informed Jean has no hard felelings over, so >1615519 can kiss Mournblade's Souldrinking Edge for Xiombarg.

OP here, just in case any drawfag actually feels like obliging, the DM used the Castlevania succubus as a reference image for the erinyes (she even has leathery wings rather than feathered ones). For gear she wears a mithral chain shirt and carries a spear with a black unicorn horn for its tip.

As for the paladin, she's a tall 30-ish woman with shoulderblade-length black hair that she holds back with a white hairband, wears a black shirt and leggings below her mithral breastplate, and wields a double-bladed sword like the one Shizuru had in Mai Otome.

It was a naginata in My Hime.

If it makes you feel any better, though, you could pretend its a double-bladed sword like the one Arika used? It's all good.

It was a naginata in hime, and a double-bladed sword in otome. In both cases the blade (not the shaft) could split apart into chained bladed segments.

    Just like Signum's, here.

Not at all like my paladin's weapon (double-bladed swords already cost an exotic proficiency feat, like I'd drop another on spiked chain)
