    There's no place like home.

Unfortunatly for me, this place here was now my home. When I first came to the first thing I saw was a sky washed in hues of grey. Not a single ray of sunlight in the sky, not a single star, just grey and cloud choking out the sky. Toto was still with me, thank god. He was the only thing that kept me sane when I realized I was lying in a pool-no, a sea of crimson and charred flesh. Corpses and ruin all around me, left, right, behind.
My arrival here had been violent, powerful energies and sweeping winds that were like razors ripping apart what I would later be informed of as the personal guard of the Witch of the east. It was probably best I blacked out when the twister hit, I wasn't awake to see those monstrosities slaughtered. I threw up after the initial shock subsided, I'd hate to imagine what would of happened if I saw everything in full effect.

The freedom fighter's hailed me as a hero, my explosive arival heralded as some sort of technomagic on my part. They called themselves "Kin" a race very much like our own, former slaves to the tyrinnacal rulers of this world the Witch Alliance. They wanted me to head to Emerald Hive City, and meet with their leader, the Technowizard of Oz, to be rewarded for my unintended efforts.

Just follow the yellow brick road.

All I wanted was to get back home. If this so called technomagic was capable of blasting away armies maybe it was capable of taking me and Toto back to Kansas.

With the Witch's powerful "Ruby" rifle in one hand, Toto's lead in the other and the vastly long roadway in front of me I did the only thing I could do. I walked.

Three months of walking, skirmishing and scavaging along this beaten path. Three months of staring at the yellow gravestones that seemed to run parralel with the road. Three months untill I first met 'it'.

"I was born to incite fear. A maelstrom of chaos and panic, those are my primary functions. No more. No less."

'It' announced. I couldn't really describe it as anything other than 'it'. The words it 'spoke' were a combination of voices of all those that I could remember merged into one that seemed to fill my mind.
It had no mouth. Heck it had no face, just a series of slits and finely carved cuts that revealed runes of bright orange technomagic, all densely packed together into what I could only imagine would be the human soul personified.

"We are constructs of the witches. Metal, clay, flesh. We have individually killed thousands, colectivley silenced millions and turned races into artifacts and lost history. We are fear. We are terror. We are...gone."

It was amongst hundreds that looked like it, yet it was the only one that had that orange glow, all the others were silent and frozen in position. I was expecting a former Kin stash here, I wasn't informed of this.

    "Gone?"

I querried. The least I could do was humour the thing whilst I searched the dumping pit for ammunition or scraps of food.

"The witches created new constructs. The servants of old were replaced by servants of new. We had but one purpose and had no use, we were discarded. We are gone."

The last of its....race? I didn't know what possessed me but I freed it from its bindings. Maybe it reminded me of...well, me. It couldn't help it did what it was born to do. I couldn't help but jump into this world taking the lives of hundreds even if it was for the 'good guys'. Now it was on its own.

"If you're constructs, wouldn't you be able to create more? Maybe even try living for some other purpose?"

I pressed on with the questions. The thing had perked my interest.

"Unknown. We have one purpose, to incite fear, a maelstrom of-"

"Chaos and panic, yadda yadda, I know, I know. Can't you just, you know, think of something?"

    "...think?"

For the first time I sensed a hint of emotion in the combined voices in my mind. It sounded as though it barely understood.

"Think. You know. Use your brain. Come up with theories, decide to do something for yourself."

It's orange glow seemed to flare slighty brighter for a few moments as it stood there in silence.

"We...can...not...we have one purpose, to inci-"

    "STOP!"

I thrust my open hand out towards the thing as a gesture. Full circle. I didn't know what to do with it. I heard from passing Kin forces that the road futher ahead would get dangerous. Here was a killing machine, lost, with aparantly no use. It didn't look like it needed to eat, didn't seem like it needed to sleep.

"I'm on a journey to meet with the Technowizard of Oz. If I say you helped me perhaps he'll be able to give you a brain, give you free will or something. All I ask is that you accompany me and keep me and my dog safe."

It seemed to take a few moments to allow the words to sink in. It looked back at the empty husks of it's former bretheren then turned again to me.

"We will create fear and terror to those that would stand in your way, that is our purpose."

Seemed I made an ally. Not the greatest of conversationalists but if it lived up to its resume I had a powerful guardian.

    "Do you have a name?"

"We have no name, our purpose is to-"

"I KNOW! Look, since you're all about fear and terror...how about...err...Scarecrow?"

That was the best I could come up with?

    "Scarecrow...registered. We are now Scarecrow."

    ...oh well.

Looking back on things now, I hadn't realized how quickly I had climatized to this world. In the beginning I was pretty much throwing up lunch every few days. Kin forces were only heading one direction, the wrong direction and they were far and few between. Whenever I was alone with Toto we were set upon by savages, witch rading parties and mutants.
Toto did most of the work for the first few weeks. Tearing out throats, ripping away guts and giving into predatory urges. I could barely fire a gun. Barely carry any gear. Strange how a few months of life or death firefights can change a girl.
    Point.
    Shoot.
    Brace.
Recoil was a bitch, Ruby or scavanged weapon. Maybe the statement that humans were born to wage war was true. It just felt so natural to me.

Now that Scarecrow obediently tagged along the attacks seemed to die down. It's reputation really did inspire fear. What fights we did fight however were with deranged psychos or complete and utter die hards.
    Point.
    Shoot.
    Brace.
Anything that looked leaderlike was dead. Toto gets one on the floor gargling. Scarecrow had the rest with rapid gunfire and rending claws. Routine. Like clockwork. Get into your jimjams, brush your teeth, turn off the lights clockwork. If it ran, we let it. They were just trying to survive the best way they could in this crazy world. Survival just happened to be based around killing and robbing the dead. It's how the world worked. It's how the witches wanted the world to work.

It was about six months or so into the journey when we met what would be another companion of ours. The heartless "Tin man"...

We strayed to far from the road. Not a yellow gravestone in sight. Just a forest of metal and steel gigantic spires towering up towards the grey sky above. It was a welcome change from burned out concrete buildings and dirt, but still just as lifeless.

"Is that thing still fucking chasing us? Ruby rounds just bounced of it."

We weren't here to sight see, infact we never wandered in here away from the road by accident. When that monstrosity of guns on many legs came crashing down from the sky I was expecting another routine battle. Instead when Scarecrow, the self proclaimed fear incarnate suggested we run we were in real trouble.

"Confirmed. We are reading it now on TM sonar. Magic resonance is confirmed to be that of our child."

Scarecrow's disembodied voice filled my mind. Scare was closeby, couldn't see it though. Tried to play it smart by activating its stealth systems. Try and trick whatever's chasing us into thinking we split up, forcing it to look for Scarecrow the greater threat.

"Child? One of those things that replaced you?"

I took cover, slamming my back up against one of the metal spires, clutching Toto close to my body to stop the poor exhausted thing from running off. My heart felt like it was going to explode. How long were we running?

"Correct, model AFE-210, Arachnid Fear Engine."

Made sense. I heard somewhere that insect shapes made the best combatants. The obvious upgrade for a humanoid murder machine, short of sticking on more guns and spikey things, was to make a murder machine that looked like a giant armored spider. With guns. Plus spikey things.

"How the hell do we kill it?"

Scarecrow popped into existance up against a spire next to me, its camoflauge systems must of have run dry for the day.

"We have no records of AFE destruction. We do not kill it. We run."

The cries of metal twisting and screaming echoed out through the air. The AFE found us again, didn't give a damn that there were spires of steel in between us and it. Whatever it was doing spires were collapsing towards our location, smashing into other spires. I covered my head, trying to wrap my body around my faithful pet dog. Shards fell from the sky, like rain, teardrops of twisted metal. The first time I had ever seen 'rain' in this world and it was going to fucking kill me.

"Run! We run now! We reach Emerald Hive."

Scarecrow was standing over me now, pulling on my arms, trying to get me on my feet, shielding us with it's more durable body. The very moment I stood up I collapsed to my knees. I couldn't do it. I was too exhausted. My legs were in pain. I couldn't run anymore.

    "I can't! I can't run anymore!"

I pulled the Ruby rifle around to my front and braced it up against my shoulder. Sure my body couldn't run anymore but I could at least still shoot. Toto was free from my embrace but he just solemnly stared at me, licking the back of my hand without a care about the chaos around.

"Get out of here Scarecrow. You have a chance."

I announced, as I took aim in the direction of the rapidly approaching source of the calamty and destruction. Scarecrow just seemed to be stuck there, it's body bent over my collapsed and exhausted self still shielding us from the metal falling from above.

    "Fear...terror...our purpose. Fear..."

"I get it, Scarecrow. Fear and all that stuff. I'm shitting myself, you're doing a good job."

I pulled the trigger, my sights on the lumbering figure that just came into view, obscured by the spires still standing between us and the AFE. A perfect shot. It just bounced harmlessly off. The round shattered off the AFE's thick armor plating. BAM. Another round totally useless. BAM. Again. BAM. Again. We were fucked.

    "Fear...terror...fear...terror...purpose...Dorothy."

Doro-wha? That was new from Scare.

"OI YOU BLOODY WANKER! GET YOUR GRIMEY MITTS OF MY BLOODY SPIRES!"

As was the sudden clarion call thick with british accent that resounded through out the forest of metal spires.

The AFE stopped. The collapsing stopped. Everything stopped, as if to comply with the shout from the commanding voice. I couldn't really make sense of what I was seeing. Sliding down one of the spires ahead was some sort of machine, part man part...well, junk. In his hands some sort of cruedly put together weapon made from items just like his body. Looked just like a rusty spanner.

"I'll teach you for muckin' about me spires!"

The AFE raised it's mandibles up towards the newcomer revealing the many installed weapons stored in the things the proverbial mouth. By the time it raised its head however, the man was gone, leaping from the spire and landing firmly on the Fear Engine's body.
Armor plating moaned and creaked before caving in to weight. The AFE collapsed onto its belly, the man was deceptively heavier than he looked.

    "Old tech beats Tecnomagi!"

The man stomped his feet to punctuate his remark, more machinery breaking and shattering in response. I was stunned. Toto looked stunned. Scarecrow looked...well...looked like Scarecrow. I'm sure the AFE was stunned. The man machine raised his weapon above his head with both hands and brought it down with incredibly furious power. Several legs were cloven asunder from the body, smashing into nearby spires.

    "Axe beats gun!"

The AFE thrashed about in a panic, trying to buck its passanger off from what was quickly turning out to be a blind spot in its weapon coverage. The man seemed unphased. Hell, the look on his face showed he was enjoying himself.

"But the most bloody important thing of all,"

The man let go of his oddly shaped axe, leaving it embedded in our pursuer's body. His mechanical arm started to vent white gasses as his hook shaped fingers wrapped their way around the arachnid's face.

    "Claw beats EVERYTHING!"

Then with an almighty pull the head of the machine was ripped away from the body. AFE stopped thrashing wildly and became still as the lights in its eyes dimmed and faded. Wires and scraps fell from its dismembered head being held high by the victor, the part man, part machine.

We approached, cautiously obviously. That man, just killed what was supposedly the unkillable. Played around with the 'invincible', called it a wanker then beat it to a pulp. It even spoke in a British accent, how'd this world know about the United Kingdom? It dawned on me as well, why did everything speak in the same language as me?

As we left our cover I had Toto on a tight leash, and my free arm spread out infront of Scarecrow's path. Didn't want Scare entering kill frenzy mode if this guy really intended to be our saviour.

    "T-thank you!"

He didn't seem to care about our presence. Just started to pick over the scraps of what was left of the AFE, mumbling about replacing parts of his arms or legs with this or that.

    "I-I said thank you!"

Or maybe he just didn't hear, as he caught me that time.

"Well...'ello lass...and gentlemen I see as well! Guests! Well blow me, 'aven't 'ad ones which talk in a while."

He bowed, seemed kind enough and curtious. Carried no ill intent on his voice. He must of not noticed that we were here at all. Couldn't help but curtsey back.

"I'm Dorothy, this is Toto and Scarecrow."

The man eyed us over, saw that our weapons were holstered but he did seem to examine Scarecrow with a little more interest.

"Well mannered lass you are. Odd company you keep. I be the keeper of this metal forest. Lads passing by call me the 'Tin Man'."

He was odd, to say the least. We exchanged plesantries, Toto seemed to like him. Scarecrow didn't care, as long as he wasn't trying to kill him that was fine by me. Tin Man was a combination of metal and flesh, a little like Scare but obviously different. According to Tin he was once completly flesh, a full living, breathing Kin who took care of the metal forest. A combination of having to meet with ever growing demands for metal and several accidents had resulted in him over the years jury rigging and argumenting his body. Now that's dedication.
Only a part of him was still "Alive". His left arm and upper body were still there, along with parts of his head. Everything else was piston, sheet metal and what I could only really describe as engine parts, all cobbled together. No ounce of Tecnomagic in him at all, just pure engineering marvel matched with a high pain threshold.
I explained what had happened to us, how that thing chased us and got us lost in his forest. He offered to guide us back to the roadway in exchange for more stories and about our destination. Rest asured that "Talk myself hoarse to a Tin Man." was firmly crossed off the list of things to do before I die.

"...and by then half the building was rubble. The other half was on fire. Totaly Scarecrow's fault."

"They opened fire. They were enthralled. We were not causing fear or chaos. They showed hostility. We acted as purpose dictates."

"Those were shots of victory. They were shooting in the air, god damn it."

Tinman laughed, infact he had been laughing all the way, cheery as ever, Toto close beside him. That dog took a real liking to him, no idea why.

"Lass, you and the construct are a right royal bundle of laughs!"

The spires had begun to thin out, as were the stories, we would reach the road soon and would have to say our goodbyes. Yet the sound of battle in the distance quickened our step...

A small infantry column, Kin, some in the powered armor I saw before, most in nothing more but simple flak running around like headless chickens. Some were up against the yellow gravestones that marked the edges of the roadway using the long departed markers for cover. Others were flailing about wildly with their rifles screaming orders or yelling how screwed they were.

    "Fear. Panic. Chaos."

Scarecrow, astute and a professional construct as always. It was right though, which meant only one thing. A line of power armored Kin were ripped in two, their bodies torn away from their legs as yet another AFE-210 seemed to march menacingly towards the Kin lines. Flak and power armor were one and the same to fear engines, little blobs of flesh wrapped up in paper.

"Scarecrow! Go! On it's back! Toto help me distract it!"

My beloved pet charged off like lightning, Scarecrow didn't bother with its ranged weapons instead preparing its rending claws.

"Claw beats everything. As suggested by Tin Man. Engaging."

Learns quick. I turned to Tin, he would easily help us out, make this go by quicker with less casualties. Yet as I looked back he was already walking back into his woodland of metal.

"Tin! Help us out! You'd neuter that thing!"

I call out, maybe he thought we could handle it now that we saw him defeat one.

"Sorry lass, not my bleedin' problem."

Didn't expect that response. Not from how he acted before.

"What!? That thing'll be a cake walk for you. It's right there killing guys damn it!"

"Not in my forest bowlin' over spires, not my bleedin' concern."

I checked on the situation again, Toto was a little trooper, running in front of the machine drawing fire, running for his very life. Scarecrow was trying it's best to get ontop but the machine kept batting the construct away. Scare just didn't have the weight to deal with the heavies.

"DAMN IT! JUST HELP OUT! YOU KNOW!? BE A HERO! CHARITABLE! MORALY CORRECT!"

Tin gave me a discerning huff, turning to look at me with just one eye.

"Charity lost my right leg. Morals lost my left. Trying to be a hero lost the rest. Not my bloody forest, not my bloody problem, lass."

I think I understood now. He just wanted us out, soon as we were out he didn't care. Whatever happened outside of his land wasn't his concern. But that can't of all been an act. How he treated us before can't of been some shitty little masquerade.

"PEOPLE ARE DYING NEEDLESSLY WHEN YOU COULD BE HELPING THEM! DON'T YOU CARE!? DON'T YOU HAVE A HEART!?"

I turned away lifting the Ruby rifle up into firing position. I was just wasting my time, time that could be spent putting rounds into the metal arachnid.

    "...No, lass...lost that too."

Tinman charged out ahead of me towards the battle, his axe raised above his head as he let lose a deafening battle cry...
    ...
    ..
    .
Tin Man lost his family a long time ago. He can't remember when, can't even remember how old he is. The Witch Alliance took them. Tried to save them and ended up a husk of a man. So he did the only thing he could, kept on living, carried on with his job and never gave a flying fuck about the outside world.
When I asked him to come with us, to meet with the Technowizard of Oz to maybe fix the horrible mess he was in he knew of only one thing he wanted to ask.
    He wanted back his family.
    He wanted back his heart.

He needs something extraordinary. There's a cyborg and a robot already, making him the bio-element would be cool.

Maybe some semi-lycanthroid dude in a cryostasis as punishment for deserting in battle? Maybe he was part of a Lion Brigade or something, and was in charge of holding an important line of battle but retreated at the first sight of the enemy forces (an endless tide) and his punishment was to sleep restlessly for eternity?

I'd say an exiled or enslaved elemental force of nature trying to regain some of the former glory it lost when it was brought low and broken by the Witches. Manifests through a pile of rotting carcasses that were the last of its loyal servants cut down to assist its escape in the rough shape of an ever-shifting lion.

How long was this road anyway? It felt like we had walked the world and now we were taking the scenic route all the way to the moon. I didn't count the months anymore, it just felt annoying everytime I woke up and said to myself "Morning, Dor, another day of blisters and battle for you." Just shut up and walk. That worked best.

To be fair though our pace did slow to a snail's pace. Every day we'd maybe get in an hour or two of travel. Every other waking hour was spent knocking heads with gangers, casing out safe houses for the night and searching for scraps of food. I needed to eat, Toto needed to eat. Scare was perfect. Tin was fine, all he needed was a top of random fluids every now and again, help keep that bile or whatever the hell was in his tubing flowing around. Water, blood, machine oil, didn't matter it all worked. As long as I didn't have to piss into a bottle, again, that was a laugh.

The convoys of Kin had stopped as well. Maybe the witches finally locked down on the rebellion or perhaps there was something else brewing. I didn't know. We just couldn't rely on them anymore for handouts or tokens of appreciation for the 'great hero', little old me.

Another day, another day of battle and blisters. I thought I told myself to stop thinking about that.

    "We are recieving pylon signals."

Scarecrow, the tireless construct chipped in as it dropped the bloodied corpse in its arms to the ground. Those many voices again, all mixed together now with new ones, voices of all the Kin I met and now even with a hint of the Tin Man's mixed in as well.

    "Pylon signals?"

Wasn't much left of the mutant I fragged. That 'special' round I had been saving turned ten foot of hulking muscle into kibble, which Toto had begun to happily wolf down. I knew what I'd be having for dinner tonight.

"Aye lass, pylons. Free Kin use 'em to transmit data round the world. Free information for all. S'long as yer in the know."

The Tin Man had been pilling up body parts into a ditch nearby. In his case axe really did beat gun.

    "'ello 'ello, what's this then?"

He ripped something free from a torso in his happy little pile. Some sort of metal spike and raised it up to his thick metal jaw.

    "What'cha think? Too girly?"

"Stick a skull on it. That usually works. These guys have a few going spare. Anyway, what was that about pylons?"

I turned my attention back to Scare, wasn't much left to loot from these cretins anymore. Scare was tipping what we eventually assumed was its head from one side to the next.

"Reports of turmoil in the Eastlands. Power vacuum. Lesser witches eliminating lesser witches. Kin becoming Free Kin. Chaos. It is...beautiful."

"Thumbs up team Dorothy. Anything about the Emerald Hive?"

"Fragments. We recieve fragments. Direct connection to pylon. We will recieve all information."

Before I even had to ask Scarecrow raised its arm and pointed into the distance, far from the road. Looked like another abandoned settlement on the horizon. What a wonderfully delightful place for an ambush

The Lion is obviously a feared insurgent leader of the Deadly Desert who was captured, tortured, and broken by the Witch Alliance and was then released in the middle of unfriendly territory. He hasn't had a haircut or shave in the years he's been captured.

Think a Mujhadeen leader turned cowardly Oldboy, living like an animal scrabbling to survive out in the wastes.

He's convinced his god, Ozma, has abandoned him (or more accurately, that he's failed Ozma and it's departed him, and it was his courage). He's basically suffering from crippling Post-Traumatic Stress, but maybe the Technowizard has a brain-unmangler machine.

I think just smart is still the right way to play the Wizard. Just smart = knowledge of pre-apocalyptic world. The Emerald Hive is a beautiful place. Bright and shiny newtech seemingly untouched by the war outside. Wizard claims it's his power, but instead he just nows the access codes for the old technology and computers do all the work. Perhaps have it that he cut a deal with the Wicked Witch where she doesn't screw with him he doesn't screw with her. He sends Dorothy after her bcs if they fail it can't be traced back to him, but if they succeed he can claim to have defeated the Witch and have all the power. Though that could be a bit cliche. And keeping the Wizard as mostly kind-hearted and a bit bumbling underneath however else he acts would probably be best.

So the Technowizard isn't really the booming glorious lord of oldtech, he's the old man behind the curtain who remembers how to access the public terminal from when he was a kid. Probably more of an old soldier than anything, but since the war that wiped out the old civilization he's been here, in the great post-scarcity's utopian city, in the abandoned halls of the public library- reading data files and books even. He knows a lot about a lot of things...like Neville in the original I am Legend book he's applied himself towards learning how things work, but he's no scientist. More of a hands on amateur mechanic layman whose had lots and lots of time to study.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake
And the science gets done and you make a neat gun

    I'm not even angry.
I'm being so sincere right now.
Even though you broke my heart and killed me.
    And tore me to pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.
And as they burned it hurt because
I was so happy for you.

    (Chorus 2)
Now these points of data make a beautiful line
And we're out of beta we're releasing on time.
So I'm glad I got burned think of all the things we learned
For the people who are still alive

    Go ahead and leave me.
I think I prefer to stay inside.
Maybe you'll find someone else to help you.

Yeah, I know it would be better. I wanted to add more junk to Tin Man, but upper part of his body should be organic. And now he looks like a fucking servitor.
Scarecrow looks like I wanted him to look, but you're right, I could give him some weapon.
    >> Yotian 34 05/18/08(Sun)18:44 No.1765739

Scarecrow should be a little lighter, I believe. A terror weapon, IT is supposed to be lightning quick, running in, butchering in a flurry of claws, and running out. And more runes for awesomeness. It is a piece of technomancy after all

Tinman is the one that needs to be bulky, and more cobbled together looking. Have a part of his head organic, but torso needs to be all sorts of steampunkish.

But this is still an awesome picture none the less, and I salute the drawfag who pulled it from their mind.

Along the way she converts a hopping vampire, befriends an unfeeling legalist carpenter, and reforms a scruffy bandit and brings them all along hoping to attain enlightenment for themselves.

Actually that would be a good direction take Oz.

Basically what if Oz grew up. No more powder of life shenanigans and fun munchkins...instead just a realm that's part 30's Dustbowl and part post-WWII rust-belt.

After all weren't the Tin Man and Scarecrow originally politically inspired symbols of sold out industrial laborers and farmers?

Basically Rust Oz. Not fun happy magical and alive anymore.

Witches are the rise of fascism?

And then there's the corrupt kings of big bussiness, the robber baron types. But Oz might not be the great corporate president he says he is, but he is actually a nice, and very smart man, behind the screen with the stock market readout machine. And he's actually got some ideas about how to revive the agricultural and industrial industries, if there was anyone left to listen to him.

It's been done many times. Oz dilapidated and ruled by evil forces? Return to Oz.

Grim & Dark Oz? Tin Man.

Oz with all instances of 'good' and 'evil' scrubbed out and replaced with the opposite in bright green crayon? Wicked.

Todd Macfarlane has done GRIMDARK Oz (pic related) and I wouldn't be surprised if American McGee has done the same thing.

Creativity usually entails doing something new and not re-hashing in a clumsy way something that's already been done to death.

    Oz as the afterlife?

Hovering between life and death under wreckage from a tornado, Dorothy's spirit projects to the afterworld of Oz, where her dog that's been dead for years is waiting for her.

Here people's spirits become manifest, sort of like the dark world in Link to the Past, except for Dorothy who being still tied to the mortal world is keeping her ordinary form.

She meets a farmer whose lost his identity, a woodsman who never quite got over a tragic love, and a man who was a hero early in life only to feel like a coward later on.

But then what does that make the witch? Someone who was always obsessed with money and power and control?
