    Bear Lore

A character knows the following information with a successful Nature check.

DC 15: Bears generally live in forests and caves.

How does a classless commoner know what bears is?

The Lore sections are by far the most entertaining stuff in the entire monster manual, and I wish that it was more extensive.

That said, I was sorely disappointed when I realized that Cyclopes don't serve their FORMIAN masters; damn my misreading eyes for getting my hopes up!

And no, in a dark age fantasy world(which D&D vanilla is explained as), commoners probably don't know where to find bears. This is not fucking well-educated 21st centuary.

What's more, the DMG never states that you may only apply a template once; while they do have an "overlapping abilities" clause that prevents the rigid functional templates being usful when taken multiple times, the class templates let the DM add one At Will, Daily, Encounter, and Utility power of their choice; by abusing this, the DM may give the bear all abilities available to any character of the bear's level.

Getting a bear to an intelligence of 13 is actually the biggest hurdle. Since we don't have stats for bear player characters, and all. Both bears that are stated have an int of 2, so they either have a -6 or -8 to int. If the bear puts its 18 into int, we are still only at int 10, possibly 12. I assume that there are still +int magic items (I only skimmed the section); the template section doesn't say that the int can't be from items. If not, we can put the bear's level-up stat bonuses into int.

Yes, I think it is do-able. But we will need a very special subject. It must stand alone amongst its breatheren:

It must be smarter than your average bear.

    OP here.

    >> DC 20: Manticores have three rows of teeth, which constantly
grow throughout their lives. They often leave old teeth
and iron spikes in the bodies of their mauled victims as sure
    signs of manticore attack.
    Although dimwitted, manticores understand Common
and can speak a few Common words and phrases. They are
exceedingly impatient and tend to attack those who attempt to
    parley with them.

I believe the way it's supposed to be justified is that you can take a 10 on anything. This represents the "What's a bear? Oh yeah." The 15 would include the +5 bonus you get from being trained in Knowledge: Nature, I guess. So then the taking ten would be like "Oh yeah Bears has Claws."

Of course, this doesn't explain why you only know how bears attacks if you're trained in Knowledge: Nature. So, in D&D now, you need a formal class to learn that bears do not carry swords, bows, or firearms. Awesome.

The reason animals have high Wis is, in addition to fueling druid and cleric spells and representing willpower but not force of personality because that's charisma; Wis is also how you notice stuff. Animals need to notice stuff or they'll die. I'm not claiming it makes sense, but that's the explanation.
