I have a player in my Hunter game who is essentially playing Horatio. I'm conflicted on how I feel about this. On the one hand, it's hilarious, but on the other it's very disruptive when I'm trying to create a mood. Let me give an example.

The cell came upon the body of man who's skull had been split in two and a mushroom was growing out. Here is what happened.

Hunter 1: "Holy shit, it looks like it broke through his skull..Do you think he felt anything?"

Horatio Hunter: "Probably...*puts on shades* gave him a splitting headache."

At which point everyone at the table went "YEAAHHHHHHHH!" and laughed on and off for about twenty minutes straight. So, at that point, it's nigh impossible to get them back into the freakishness and horror of the scene. What should I do fa/tg/uys? Just run with it or try and rein it in?

If they're having fun don't spoil it for them. If he keeps it up while the rest get tired of it then it's time to act.
    >> Anonymous 09/13/08(Sat)01:42 No.2564308
Depends, do you really care if it's a serious game or not?
    >> Anonymous 09/13/08(Sat)01:42 No.2564310
Your players are having fun. This is important.
But yes, mention to them that it technically -is- intended to be a horror game, and the mood is almost non-existent when every case becomes a CSI: Miami joke. If they want to just rock out with their cocks out, however, either adapt your Hunter or take your ball and pout your way home.
The role of GM is a service role to the players. If you don't enjoy that, don't do it.

On the players' end, though, if the players want this to be a "fuck around" campaign they need to settle that with the GM instead of fucking around in what might be preconcieved as a 'serious' game, or else the GM is wasting time and effort on them trying to maintain the tone and style of the game.

It's a two-way street, and the idea that either side is more important leads to a mess.

Yeah, I've had similar stuff happen to my players....it's just the kind of players they are, and they are giving you subconsciously tips as to how they play and what they like.

While you dont want to end their fun...you also have to ask yourself- is this what -I- want? If you're not having fun as a DM, then something is wrong. That said, also keep in mind the stories and adventures you're playing.

If you're playing a Call of Cthulhu game, and when a mighty Ancient One or elder daemon descends upon the tapestry of reality, his eldritch glory threatening to rip apart their minds...

And one PC character screams out: "WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM!" and proceeds to assume a fighting stance....

Then they arent in the right mindset. At all.

I'd think that considering the standards and roleplaying 'ethics' of CoC , I would expect players to you know....show fear, scream, do anything to survive...standard horror shit.

Your responses kinda make more sense if I was playing, you know ...Cthulhutech. Where there's a pervading feeling of "Do the Impossible! See the Invisible! Stop the Unstoppable!" againts the alien forces that assault our reality.

CoC is more about "Oh shit, we're doomed..."

Bah, that boat wasn't what sent Cthulhu back. It was just coincidencental timing.

If Cthulhu was susceptible to manliness, then he wouldn't be able to exist on Earth at all. After all, Chuck Norris lives here (lolmorememes!)

But seriously, Cthulhu was just having a bad day. He spent most of the day working on reports for his boss. The office coffee machine was broken. He found out that his wife was cheating on him with his best friend. When he gets back home, he finds a bunch of dillweed humans crawling over his home and then they go and ram him with a steamer. A steamer, I hasten to add, that is quite heavy.

Wouldn't you go back to sleep?

Or you could let them go all MANLY SPIRIT, only to crush them in one round (not familiar with CoC or its terminology, sorry).

As for you, OP, try discuss it with your players, or just roll with it. They sound like they're having fun, don't spoil it.

Yeah, if the players are having fun, don't try to force your story down their throat. Let them have fun, it's why everybody is there.

That being said, I know many players who enjoy having things forced down their throat, especially stories.

Now, if the players didn't like your stories and your game world, they wouldn't bother coming to game sessions. Talk to "Horatio". Ask him whether he would consider being more serious for a few sessions at least (Remember! It's always a temporary change, or at least that's what you tell them!). If, after a few sessions, they keep looking to "Horatio" to say something funny, then it's not just "Horatio" who wants a lighter-hearted game.

    Cont'd

Actually, now that I think about it, you should take it as a compliment. After all, humor is one of humanity's basest responses to unmitigated horror. People need to respond __somehow__, after all.

You might want to work with that. See if you can convince the "Horatio" to start acting a bit more crazy and unstable, like his mental defense against horror i.e. humor isn't as effective as it seems to the outside world.

Could work out very well if not done heavy-handily.

You're more right than you could possibly imagine.

You see, it's not /b/ that's doing this. Not really. The best way to think of /b/ is trying to keep fish alive in an aquarium filmed with bleach. You keep pouring More little fishies and they keep dieing in droves. But every so often, one survives. It's evolution on fast forward.

But the majority of the conspirators don't come from /b/. They don't even come from 4chan. They cOme from everywhere.

The Cabal's purpose is to make sure the internet keeps it's current structure, to make sure that the last bastiOn of Gnostic freedom doesn't die out.

Now, if this is really a big hush-hush conspiracy, why am I telling you this? Obvious: the right person will beLieve what I say and seek out the deeper truth, while the wrong person will wrIte it off as the semi-coherent ramblings of a lolrandom internet denizen who's only actiVe on 4chan.

The bEst place to hide something is to hide it in plain Sight.

A game that ends because you just couldn't fucking stop laughing at what happened in the game, is just as good a way to end the session as a conclusion, cliffhanger or whatever else you had.

Just make sure you've got your shit (read:what's next) ready for next game, as you'll be finishing off or going 'right after' that scene and continuing further.

ie; if you had maybe half an hour left of material and then that would've been the end of the adventure, you'll have a few hours of the next one ready, as you're just a little delayed in ending this one is all.

Possibly the same reason you do.
What, do you have something against Animorphs?
    Or Mexicans?

Marco was a good character as seen through nostalgia goggles. He made jokes to deflect the fact that his mother was the leader of a group of evil aliens that wanted to kill him, and that everyone he knew had a high chance of dying. While the nostalgia goggles prevent me from accurately reflecting on it, but that's a good trait. Black humour being used to hide someone's true feelings, and the fact that they're likely to die, and face such a horrible fate on a daily basis.

You make it out like my pointing that out is somehow incredibly retarded. It's not. I'm sure you wouldn't agree though, because Marco wasn't one of the secondary Animorphs. You know, the ones that were crippled.

Rachel dies saving the world. So do do something like half of the crippled kids they gave powers, but we didn't get to know them over something like 40 books.

Near the end, everything went out into the open, and so after it was over they became public heroes, and of course they had broken lives. Cassie and Jake didn't get together, Tobias became even more reclusive, and Ax... well, the last think of the book was Ax coming back after being assimilated by some other alien monster, threatening the Earth. The Animorph's reaction is more or less "Time to save the universe again."
It was a cliffhanger, and while I can respect that there's this whole "the struggle goes ever on" thing, it just felt... tacked on. I mean, the same thing could have been done, but it could have been done better. Even as a kid I realized that Applegate and her ghostwriters weren't the best, but it was a good story. And that was just GIANT SPACE FLEA FROM NOWHERE!

God, that one part of the Andalite chronicles makes me think. The part when they rescue Tobias' mom and that one kid from the Taxxons.
She pulls off her clothes and her shoes, and Elfnagor thinks she's ripping off her skin and hooves, and when she starts doing cartwheels he thinks she's going to fall. Because humans don't have four legs, or tails, or anything that helps balance besides our ears.
    That's interesting.

And of course, after the Andalite Chronicles, after she lives a nice life with Elfangor as a human nothlit, TIME TRAVEL DICKERY happens, and she becomes poor and destitute.
Goddamn, that series was rather grimdark for a kids' book...
