I find it ironic that our troll here is the best example of the common man. Uneducated to the point where he thinks a style that emphasizes speed is not a style at all. Uneducated to the point where he thinks that because something has become popularized, i.e. a meme, that it must be shallow and meaningless by nature and therefore can never be made deep.

He isn't really a troll he is a fool. A populist fool. Because so long as things are clearly "us and them" he will have someone to hate, to blame for all the problems in the world.

I thought the punchline is the same as in those "Nietzsche's Family Circus" or "H.P. Lovecraft's Family Circus" or remixed Garfield comics, it's the humor of contrast and transposition, taking a familiar subject and jarring it out of place with something else that is familiar enough to the audience to be known, and known to be foreign to that familiar subject.

This does not seem like a dramatic change-up. This does not look like Cerberus syndrome. This just looks like a different kind of joke than the expected one.

I didn't lol or anything, but I kinda liked it just the same.

People who are stupid love to use the word "pretentious," or if they are truly ambitious they will use the term "pseudo-intellectual."

Basically these kind of comments, when aimed at genuine material, come from one of two general mentalities:

    1) I don't understand this so I will insult it.

    2) I understand this, but it makes me feel insecure/jealous/angry so I will attempt to discredit it by making it seem to be faux-intellectual drivel. This will make me feel better about myself

I hope you will please excuse the oversimplification. But this, at least, has been my experience.

Of course, this fails to recognize the fact that there is an over-abundance of material, not just on the internet, but everywhere human beings have attempted to be creative that does honestly deserve the label. I'm certain everyone here has had the "luxury" of reading at least one piece of vampire related fiction that fits the bill rather handily.

The OP's particular piece isn't pretentious so much as ill fitting. Fuklaw has never been displayed as deep, quite the opposite really. The fans of this particular meme aren't expecting a window into his souls and emotions, they're expecting swearing, gore and visual humor. Applied to any other commissar with a bit of modification, I'd imagine there would be few, if any, complaints about this comic.

    >>2971848

You make a good point. There IS a lot of genuinely pretentious crap out there. So while the word is overused, it is also called for in many cases.

Me personally, I like the OP's comic. I truly enjoyed reading it. I come from a family with an extensive military background, so seeing Fucklaw as something other than a humorous character, seeing him portrayed as an actual soldier is very personally appealing to me. I enjoy this drawfag's work. But it's easy to think of drawfags as just that, and nothing more. When really, as this thread proves, they are artists (of a sort). And when you are dealing with art, regardless of the artist's intentions, there will be a wide variety of personal reactions from people. We each experience an image, picture, movie, song, etc. differently because each of is different and each of us brings something different to the table.

Someone might enjoy this comic because it flushes out Fucklaw's character. Someone else might hate it because it's related to 40K, they don't like 40K, and they are tired of all things 40K. Each of us brings something different to the table. The important thing is being able to separate your personal preferences from your emotional reactions and to be able to appreciate something objectively as well.

But that's just my opinion at 5 in the morning.

I made a general observation about people who tend to criticize things in general because they don't understand or don't like them.

It may apply to the poster in question who is saging this thread, it may not.

My "no justification" was an argument stating that people who do tend to insult things they don't like or understand tend to do so as a means of self-validation. That often, simply because a person dislikes something personally, they will attempt to discredit it by misportraying it.

And ad hominem is ad hominem. It doesn't matter if someone responds to it with another ad hominem, that doesn't change the fact that it is still, objectively speaking, an attack on the person and presents no legitimate argumentative critique.

Also, sage because I've posted to damn much in this thread already.

    >I made a general observation about people who tend to criticize things in general because they don't understand or don't like them.

No, you accused them of doing it. Calling someone stupid simply because they call to question the work's actual artistic merit is not an observation

How does one prove that chocolate Jesus with a small chocolate dick with a gold wrapped liquorice halo hanging from it is not true art? You can accuse critics of ANYTHING of "not understanding" or simply disliking the work in question. How is your accusation inherently more valid than theirs? I furthermore stated that I was making a over simplification so that people with fully functioning brains would understand that my comments were not always applicable in all situations.

You are arguing for scenarios in which my critique does not apply as if they were the only scenarios that exist, acting as if my statements and observations are always invalid.

In short your arguments suffer from the same problems that case-studies do. You are saying that in Example A my argument is invalid and therefore it is always invalid. That, my friend is another logical fallacy. Piled onto you earlier ad hominem it's starting to sound as if you really are just trying to discredit me without adding anything substanative to this argument or this thread.

And how do you determine whether art is genuine?

    >>2972070
Show me where in my post I accused you of accusing the residents of this thread of anything. Don't try to put words in my mouth

Nice little speech at any rate. Had no basis on anything I said but sounded very intellectual. I'm sure it swayed an opinion or two

Asserting that an art critic can be objectively wrong is the only logical fallacy here. No such thing as a 'legit' piece of art exists. That's just popular opinion
    >> Anonymous 11/10/08(Mon)10:29 No.2972294
    >>2972192

Art is a subjective, stylized, and formal representation of the objective human condition. Art can be defined objectively and critiqued objectively. For example, abstract art requires the presence of an audience of some kind as part of its purpose is to be experienced. Abstract art rejects the traditional form inherent in art and often uses shape or color as form.

It is possible to improperly objectively interpret or critique art. For example, if a poem uses hyperbole to elicit emotional impact and I say that, because I disliked the emotional impact I felt personally, that the use of hyperbole was bad or wrong. That is an objective critique based on a personal emotional response. It is incorrect if, in fact, the artist was seeking to elicit strong emotional responses through hyperbole.

You can dislike something and use that dislike to critique a piece of art and that critique can be wrong. I believe this statement to be objectively true. You, perhaps, do not.

That's fine. Sometimes art is about agreeing to disagree. And perhaps I misinterpreted your post. But frankly I feel as though you are still merely mincing words. You have no intellectual skin in the game. You are still dancing around, prodding with insults, asserting the correctness of your own opinion while investing no effort in truly saying what you think is true and explaining it in a logical and valid way.

You are the worst kind or person to argue against because, honestly, I don't think you really care.

Even you admit not everyone can agree about the validity of art. Yet you call people stupid just because they consider an artwork you enjoy and consider to be genuine to be pretentious trash. So what is the criteria for times when disagreeing is "acceptable" instead of the person being pretentious himself?

I took a class study art from a philosophical perspective with a PhD in philosophy who graduated from Harvard. I can't condense all of what I learned into one post but sufficed to say, there's some good reasons why some people think art can be objectively critiqued.

One of those reasons is the fact that art has set forms. And even abstractions of those forms still have notable characteristics and methodologies behind them. Form here encompasses many, if not all, of the ways in which artists express themselves through artistic mediums. For example, poets have literary devices they use such as meter, metaphors, similes, allegories, allusions, diction, and so on. These are objective qualities of art that we experience subjectively. The personal experience of art does not, by necessity, discount our ability to categorize, explain, or qualify art.

Please excuse me if I am unclear or explain myself poorly. I have not been able to get much sleep lately.

It's called design faggot, even with abstracted or even non objective art there's a certain element of design to it. There are methods of drawing the eye around the work to bring out what was intended to show. The triangular form for instance, is an extremely common method to drawing the eye.

This was sort of a fun train wreck to come home to. Didn't really expect this particular kind of sagestorm. I actually expected most people to flip out about Fuklaw having any hint of reason, and to start tearing apart the walls.

I'm hesitant to call any webcomic art, especially when its linework only took me about 30 minutes to finish, and when I'm just using multiplying layers with 3 tone-paint schemes for color. Not that it didn't take forever to completely assemble, but still.

But thanks for the praise and the sage. Clapping is a little less satisfying without some booing to reinforce it.

Why this jumping to Fuklaw-killed-the-Starchild conclusions?

He writes to his "dear" about their "mutual loss", asking "Could I have saved him?" and finishes with "Remember always, my dear, how I am stained by his blood." If he was referring to big E, his God, would he not have written Him and His? Is it not more likely that he is simply referring to some innocent slain on account of Fuklaw's actions in the past; possibly the son they had together - hence "our mutual loss"?

This is not about the dooming of mankind, it is a glimpse of humanity in a thoroughly de-humanized man who tries to absolve the guilt of his own son's death through piety.

    tl;dr - Starchild = NO, Fuklaw's perfectly ordinary innocent son = YES

    Several possibilities:

*He was the soldier. He accidentally killed someone's child, possibly his own.
*He was the father. The soldier was the only person that proved capable enough to stop whatever it was that killed the child.
*He was not talking about the child, but about the Emperor. The scenes are only there to reference other events in his life, which reveal the duality of what John F. is saying: he is "stained by the Emperor's blood," but his wording shows that he is really thinking about his son.
*There is an underlying message that John means to communicate to his ex-wife / lover, that only both of them can pick up on.
*Starchild, with elements from the other scenarios.

Words fail to describe how awesome this is, I've read some of the novels, wanting to see the human side more than the same old WOOOO SPESS MAHREEN KILL fluff, hence my general tilt towards the IG, and this comic fits it nicely. It's awesome seeing Fuklaw as an actual person, rather than just another /tg/ batshit nuts character. Good work, Drawfag.

OP, you have managed to turn a one dimensional character into manly tears. Thank you.
    >> Anonymous 11/10/08(Mon)19:01 No.2974943
I read this as Fucklaw writing to his wife, or ex-wife after he failed to prevent the death of his son.

In any case, thanks OP. Please continue the good work. And never lose that attitude you have, of praise being made more meaningful when it is combined with displeasure. That is a very mature attitude coming from a 4chan drawfag. It's a hell of a lot better then the usual "LOVE ME ALL OF YOU LOVE ME" shit I see.

Best of luck to you and please keep drawing.

I fell in love with Fuklaw for his anger, awesome hat, and hatred of the EXTRA HERETICAL.

I stayed in love with him for the truly epic manly tears.
    >> Anonymous 11/10/08(Mon)22:39 No.2976089
    Brother Iratus was angry.

This in itself was normal-Iratus was an accomplished assault trooper of the Angry Marines, and rage was as natural to him as drawing breath. That too would end soon, he realizes slowly. One does not recover from wounds as deep as his, not even an astartes. All his years of service, of war waged in the Emperor's name, would come to a close this day, on this blood-soaked field. No more will he fight mankind's enemies, no more will he feel the exhilaration of jet-assisted impact. He can finally rest.
    >> Anonymous 11/10/08(Mon)22:43 No.2976112
    >>2976089

When this notion finally settles in his hardened cranium, a tumult of emotions wash over him. Disappointment, regret, satisfaction, pride, indigence, and finally rage, more powerful than any he has experienced before. Who were these filthy xenos, who dared cripple him! He is an instrument of the Emperor's will, not a notch on the barrel of some foul ork's gun! He struggles to rise, warp-bent on gutting his assailant, whoever it may be. He finds himself unable to stand, and stares at his broken and mangled legs as though they were Horus' own.
    >> Anonymous 11/10/08(Mon)22:46 No.2976128
    >>2976112

"COME ON!" he shouts, frightening off a nearby grot. "AFTER ALL I'VE BEEN THROUGH, I CAN'T EVEN KILL A FUCKING ORK!?!? WELL FUCK YOU!" he shouts at his legs, as he starts to drag himself along the broken ground. He feels the jagged detritus of war scrape at his wounds, knows that his time is running out with his quickly-clotting blood. "COME ON YOU FUCKBADGERS!" he yells defiantly to the world, seeking one last opponent, one last foe to vanquish.
    >> Anonymous 11/10/08(Mon)22:47 No.2976135
    >>2976128

The battlefield around him is empty. He sees his battle-brothers ahead, slaughtering the orks. As his strength dims, a new emotion forces its way into his head: fear. He is failing the Emperor. At this thought he elevates to even higher levels of fury, and his vessels would surely burst if not for lack of blood. He lifts his arm, and it falls back uselessly to the ground. He opens his mouth to voice one final protest, but has no breath.

A painful minute passes before the astartes finally dies. Iratus died as he had lived, angry to the last.

    >we made up rules for art. If it doesn't follow them, it's objectively bad!

I'm really curious why art that takes a shit on your rules isn't as valid as works that rhyme or fulfills other made up criteria. Well okay, poems as a whole are a concept with rules but painting and the like isn't bound by such technicalities. How do you justify the rules which define a good painting or sculpture on an objective level?
