"At ease," The commissar grunted when he noticed that the six of us were still standing at attention, "You can't ride the whole trip like that. You are confined to these chambers, but enjoy yourself." He continued to look at us from underneath that large hat they wear, stern black eyes almost hidden in wrinkles and battle damage. He was ugly, he was old, and he had a gun. The sheer number of scars and flaps of skin made him ultimately unremarkable. Any truly defining feature he had was destroyed by age or guns. But since this particular bit of ugly was wearing the commissar hat, who were we to say no?

Still, we waited for him to sit down in his chair and fall asleep before we moved. We didn't want this to be a test and us screw up, y'know? I could imagine a bitter old commissar doing that, telling his soldiers to relax and then executing the first one to give in to 'heretical slothfulness'. I've heard stories about the shit they do, dealt with a few myself before getting drafted. Pricks, all of them. And, hell, probably not even human. The commissar that was barking orders to us fell asleep in a metal chair. A chair that looked designed to correct posture by concentrated discomfort. How any human could sleep in that thing was beyond me.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)15:26 No.2973716
However, when we heard him snoring we finally relaxed. I took a seat on the closest bunk in the room. It felt good to finally get off my feet. I pulled my gun up off the floor and slung it across the back of the bunk as I surveyed the room. Was far too busy being scared shitless of the new commissar to really take in my surroundings. Not that there was much to them. Gun metal grey and eight faded green bunks, the top ones attached to rusty chains and locked in place by some bar at the bottom. The only other thing worth noticing was the chair built into the floor that the commissar had so kindly taken, and the porthole in the back of the room with a view of the outside world. Not that there was shit to see out there. Just red wisps floating in a blackish void. Everything had an odd tint out there. Couldn't see a single star. No idea how the guys guiding this ship knew where the hell they were going, but at this point in my career I was accustomed to not being told anything.

"So, anyone know where the fuck we're headin' to?" One of the guardsmen spoke up. Bulky guy, lots of muscle, probably less brain. I think his name was Robert or Quint or something. I wasn't paying that much attention, and we had hardly had time to introduce ourselves. We were all still in uniform, so really all I could see was his meaty face and poorly shaven stubble.

"Weren't you paying attention?" The guardsmen across from him replied as they started to take up seats on the bunk. That one in particular sat down next to me, kind of scrawny for a guardsmen. But he seemed to be pretty happy overall. Almost beaming with pride to be in the guard.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)15:26 No.2973720
Well hell, I could use a nice little pick me up in the form of a cheery idiot.

He turned and extended his hand, deciding to introduce himself "Hi, Octus. Just came from-" And he was cut off by the big guy.

"Yeah. Secundu. We all fuckin' did. Good for you. You gonna answer my damn question?" He interrupted the poor guy. He blushed, he actually blushed, and scratched his head. He was like a little pup. I don't know how the guys back in boot camp didn't break his spirit, but it was refreshing.

"Oh... uh... it's some sort of.... of a... a feral world, I think." He looked down a bit. Shy little guy, obviously didn't like being called on when he didn't know the answer. The hand he had extended to me was still hanging in air. I guess the poor bastard forgot where his limbs were.

"Thaddius." I said as I gave his hand a firm shake. He looked over me, obviously confused, before realizing he had introduced himself. He gave a sheepish smile and started to open his mouth when the big guy started talking again.

"So you weren't payin' attention either. Ah well, who gives a fuck?" He then leaned back into the wall. He seemed to be toying with Octus, but he might have just been a dick in general. Or hell, maybe he really was nonchalant. Not like nihilism wasn't common amongst the Guard.

"Oh, no no no. I was. I... well, I didn't really catch the name of the planet. But it's got heretics on it." Octus replied as I let go of his hand.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)15:26 No.2973721
"I wonder if there's a law against raping heretics. I'm sure they got some really sexy chicks." One of the other guys spoke up. Messy looking guy. Everything about his uniform was a little off. Probably got scolded for it by command. Might have been executed to for desecrating the God Emperor's holy armaments' or some such charge but Secundu needed a lot of recruits to meet its quota. Guess command figured the idiot was gonna die on the battle field anyways, no need to waste batteries. The big guy tilted his head and looked at the guy. I imagine if the idiot had been on the same bunk as the big guy he might have been in a headlock or something. The distance only permitted him to give the idiot a 'what the fuck?' kind of stare.

"What? A man's got his damn need, and the Guard sure ain't payin' for any whores." He replied, trying to play it off as a joke. The big guy kept staring at him, and poor Octus looked like he had no idea what the hell was going on.

"Shut up Roth." One of the otherwise silent two Guardsmen spoke. The last two were on the bunk across from the one me and Octus were sitting on. I couldn't really see their face, they were looked down and pulling a hand of cards up over their features. They seemed like good friends. At least, good friends enough to be sitting that close while playing whatever the hell they were playing.

"Fuck you, man. Fuck you." The idiot, Roth, shot back. The big guy just shook his head and rested it on the wall. His eyes lazily shut. I didn't notice it before, but the poor bastard had some dark circles under his eyes. He either forgot how to sleep or got into a fight after finishing up another one. Probably would have won anyways.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)15:27 No.2973727
"So, uh, who are you?" Octus asked the big guy as Roth went back to... actually, I really didn't know what Roth was doing. I think he was trying to look in on the card game. Or he might have been jacking off, what with where his hands were around. Seemed creepy enough that he might try and get away with masturbating in public.

    "Uh... sir?"

"Xerxes." He piped up, his voice a little distant. He was definitely drifting off.

"Ooh. Big scary bad ass, one word sentences." Roth mocked him. Or tried to. Xerxes didn't seem to care much. He just rolled his head over and looked at Roth for a little bit before speaking.

"'Scuze me, I haven't slept for three damned days." And though he didn't really sound malicious when he said it, it seemed to be enough to shut Roth up. He went back to doing whatever the hell he was doing. I'd still put money on him masturbating furiously and crying on the inside. Roth rolled his head back into its resting position and went back to some sort of half sleep. Octus leaned over me to take a look at the guys playing cards and then decided to maybe not disturb them. Or was too afraid that they might be angry. He seemed like the type that didn't really get out much.

"So, do you know who the commissar is?" Octus asked as he leaned back into a sitting position. I took a look over at the sleeping pile of ugly again. Again, he was kind of unremarkable outside of his lack of looks so even if I did see him before I probably wiped him from my mind. Make room for the commissars with nice tits.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)15:28 No.2973732
"No idea." I shrugged and leaned back into the wall. Not that I had to lean far, the bucks weren't exactly wide and luxurious.

"Oh." Octus replied, looking a little disappointed at the lack of a conversation opportunity. I guess he might have hoped to hear a story about the commissars exploits. Certainly looked like the old man had seen a lot. Octus then got up and took a look out the port hole. Not really sure why, just red shit and empty space.

"... I think there's a whale out there." He spoke as he pressed up closer against the glass.

"Yeah. There's a whale out there... what's a whale doing out there?" Okay, he repeated it. He wasn't just seeing shit. I got up, putting a hand on his shoulder and looking over it. Yep. There was a whale out there. At least, it used to be a whale. It looked a little more bloated than a normal whale. Had some odd scar over its eye. A circle around its eye with a bunch of arrows coming out of it. It was slowly rotating in space. Very slowly rotating. Wouldn't have even noticed the thing was moving if I didn't see a large gash on its stomach slowly pull up. The wound looked black, with a lot of yellowing pus and fat that had leaked out of it.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)15:28 No.2973733
"It's a God Emperor damned space whale." I remarked, Octus looked back, shocked to hear that particular curse. Not sure how 'fucking' and 'shit' didn't bother him but that one did. Poor sheltered guy. Roth got up, walking over and trying to shove us away from the window. Not that the scrawny idiot could move me.

"A what?" Roth spoke up. His ignorance was shining on through.

"A whale. It's... they're big things that live in oceans." Octus answered. I admit I wasn't really sure what an ocean was, but I probably had a better idea than Roth did.

"Bullshit. Let me see." We finally relented, parting enough so that he could get a look at the thing. He then shook his head as he looked at it, "Damn. That thing's ugly. You say they live in... a..."

"An ocean. It's a large body of water." Octus seemed to be a little happier now that he got a chance to answer questions, even if it was for that ingrate.

"Never seen a fat guy made of water. I think you're making that shit up." Roth smirked as he looked at Octus. Didn't take much to make Octus look away. Don't know how he managed to survive training so timid.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)15:29 No.2973738
"It's like a pool, you idiot. A really big pool. Bigger than cities. Secundu didn't have any, but some planets do. Try to read a little, dumb ass." I shot back. Octus needed some one in his corner. He gave me a little look, a nonverbal thank you, and straightened his posture a little.

"Hey, fuck you. Doesn't answer what it's doing out there." Roth grumbled. Xerxes got up, more or less pushing the idiot away to get a good look.

"Now that's fucked up." He replied. I took a look back and just barely saw Roth. The idiot looked a little terrified of Xerxes. Probably for the best. Good to know we had some one that could keep the asshole in line. I looked back out at the whale, twisting lazily in space. And I just barely caught one of its fins twitch. Was it still alive?

"D-did it just move?" Octus had apparently caught the action as well. Xerxes grunted.

"Maybe." Where did I recognize that voice? We all turned around to see the commissar. He was shorter than Xerxes, but then again Xerxes was a giant of a man. But I was just barely average height and he was still a little shorter than me. Yet the little bastard got us all to turn around. Well, except the guys playing cards. I don't know if they didn't see the commissar move, or if they didn't care. We all parted to give the commissar a look, not sure if we should snap a salute or if doing so would get us executed for defying the 'enjoy yourself' order he gave earlier.

"Hm." And then the commissar was out of the room. I didn't know what he was planning on doing, but we all breathed a sigh of relief.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)15:29 No.2973741
"Scary fuck. Bet he can't get it up any more." Roth muttered. Xerxes looked over at him before ramming his right palm into the back of the idiot's head.

"Mother fucker!" Roth looked rather pissed, but he knew Xerxes could rip him limb by limb.

"Show some respect." Xerxes shot back before sitting down at the bunk again and trying to get back to sleep. He looked a little disturbed though. Me and Octus looked out the window again, Roth trying to sneak a peak every now and again. That whale corpse was the best entertainment we had at the moment. Disturbing as the gutted thing was, it was something. I had a bad feeling the longer I stared at it the more nights it'd visit me in my nightmares, but it passed the time.

The commissar came back not too long after, followed by... I have no idea what the hell it was. I think it was a person. It had a man's face, but it didn't have a mouth. He had a rebreather fused with his skin. Poor bastard was missing an eye, had some red glass thing with some black metal bolted onto his eye socket. Had some metal arms sticking out of its back with some weird black metal arm thing coming out of the right sleeve of its red robes. The hood was pulled up over his head so I couldn't tell if the poor guy had hair or not. He looked a little sickly, could hear his every breath. I can only imagine the machines might have been keeping him alive, if he was even alive any more.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)15:30 No.2973746
He was carrying what I thought was a paint bucket, but I can't imagine some one that screwed up doing painting. Me and Octus stepped back to the side, Roth slinking away past the man-machine-thing to his bunk.

"What the hell is that thing?" I whispered to Octus. He seemed pretty knowledgeable. Shut-ins usually were.

"That's a tech-priest." He whispered back as the man, the tech-priest, produced a thick brush.

"THAT'S a tech-priest?" I almost blurted out, barely containing my volume. Then again, that thing might have been hearing us anyways. Enough machines on him as it was, probably had something to help his ears. The tech-priest walked up to the window, the commissar following behind him, and placed down the bucket before popping it open. He then turned to the commissar, giving a better look at the right side of his face.

He still had one eye in place, and I saw a few wires and tubes connected to his neck that the hood had shadowed.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)15:30 No.2973752
"Shouldn't a servitor be do..." The tech-priest was cut off by the commissar's look. Any guardsmen would have frozen or died on the spot from the look, but the tech-priest simply relented. He turned around, dipping the paint brush in the paint can.

"Respected Machine Spirit, what we do now is not out of disdain for you. We hold all your gifts in the highest regards, and we are blessed every day you grant us the right to utilize your machinery. What we do now is for our own minds, for what this window has show makes it difficult for ours to rest. We do not question your wisdom in showing such a sight, we simply seek to appease you now so that you will not take offense when we obscure this window. Blessed and beloved Machine Spirit, look kindly upon our task and grant us this indulgence." And then the tech-priest painted the window black. I wasn't really sure what the speech was about. I guess the machine was alive. Or maybe the tech-priest was crazy. Still, some one with that much machinery built into him he probably knew what he was doing. The tech-priest picked up the bucket and made his way to the door. He exchanged looks with a commissar, and I swear I heard him whisper 'There, favor repaid' before he went out of the room. The door slid shut behind him and the commissar went back to sleeping in his chair.

"Well, there goes the fuckin' entertainment." Roth grumbled.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)15:31 No.2973753
"Anyone wanna play poker." One of the two guys playing cards spoke up. I looked over at Octus, made a head jerk, and slid over to the edge of the bunk. Octus looked over with some curiosity. Guess he was going to watch the first game or something. Roth stood up, but halfway across the room the other guy spoke up.

    "'Cept you."

    "Fuck you, mother fucker."

I lost track of how long it took us to make it to our planet. Maybe months, hell, maybe a year or two. Can't really keep track of time in a grey metal room, and that was where we spent most of our time. Sleep, eat in the mess hall, train, train, train some more, get a little recreation time out of our room, then spend the rest of our time 'praying and reflecting' in our room. I did learn a few things though. Not from command, of course. They never see the value in telling the grunts anyways. They seem to expect us to die long before telling us anything would get a return on their investment.

That last bunk never filled up. And the commissar, whenever he would stay in the room with us, always ended up falling asleep in that chair. I don't know how he managed it. When he was gone at one point I tried to sit down in that thing. Hurt my back after a while. I don't know, maybe that's why commissars are so damned pissed off all the time. Then again, from what I've heard from other guardsmen we got lucky with our's. He's a gruff old man, but he doesn't talk a whole lot. The few other commissars that I've had to deal with looked ready to shoot me if I so much as sneezed too loudly. Not that our commissar was a little angel. When he was awake and in the mood to talk, he only gave orders. Deliver this, train more, pray more, or criticism. Your helmet's askew a little, your lasgun shouldn't be that far away from you, you messed up the prayer, so on and so on.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)19:14 No.2975011
I did eventually learn his name. From the card guys, actually. Learned their names too. Turns out the two playing cards, Titus and Hans, were caught in the first wave of drafts on Secundu and got stuck with him. They didn't know anything about his past either, but he was a pretty vicious man during their training. Made them use less than loyal guardsmen as target practice, kept them out for days on the shooting range if one of them missed a shot, tons of nasty things. They said his name's Heimdall. They could never figure out how old he was. Might be for the best. If what they said was true about him, some one like him might be kept fueled for centuries by raw evil or something. I just can't understand what drives those commissars to do what they do.

I tried to track down the tech-priest from the first night here, the one that painted over the window. Did it on the off time they let me out of the bunk, and a few times when I was supposed to be in the room. The commissar either slept too heavily or just didn't care. Never could find him though. Didn't count on most of those tech-priests looking the same. Had one hell of a nightmare when I first ran across a group of them working on some 'servitors'. Horrific thing, those 'servitors'. I mean, I'd heard about them, but I didn't really think... well, they never really advertise that they're horrific abominations patched together with skin and machine. Those things looked humans but they didn't seem alive. Whenever they did talk, it was always this flat monotone with some buzzing and grinding noises behind it. Their eyes looked like a dead man's eyes. Never really looking at anything. A little cloudy, pupils never changing with the lighting. They were horrible. The tech-priests at least seemed human, but those things looked more like mockeries of humanity.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)19:16 No.2975022
Still, all those nightmares they brought were for naught. If the tech-priest and Heimdall ever talked, it was never in our room. I'll probably never see him again. Kind of strange, having some one just walk into your life for a brief moment and then having them step right out. Back on Secundu it was different. You worked with the same people, saw the same people almost all your life. If anyone left, they either died or was relocated. But here you can barely make connections. Outside of the five other guys in my room I always ended up eating and talking with different people. Even shooting next to different people. Almost seemed like it was intentional, trying to suppress our humanity.

Turns out we were heading to join up with a small fleet over Jotunn III. A few weeks before we got there we traded in our browns and yellows for new uniforms. Some of them got this completely white arctic camo, but my squad got dark greys and whites. Seems Jotunn III was an ice world. I wasn't really sure what that meant. Octus said it was the opposite of Secundu. Rather than hot as all hell, cold as all hell. I've never seen snow in my life, but I'm to understand it's white. Still, we got lucky and got to be part of the urban assault force. I've barely dealt with cold in my life, I'm glad to get stuck in the part that probably has some heaters. Though compared to other squads we were short a man. I don't know what happened to the empty bunks, if the people intended to fill them died before they got into the room or if they just got lost in the bureaucratic mess that is the Secundu government. Too late to really care, though.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)19:18 No.2975032
It only took about an hour after our ship joined the others that we headed to the surface. I didn't get to see the other ships until we got to the shuttles though. They were massive. I thought the Secundu ship was huge but one of the ships from the other worlds was twice as large as the Secundu ship. It was strange, seeing those titans hanging silently over that white planet. Each one was a different color. The Secundu ship was black and orange, but the other four ships were of different colors. And that huge ship? Gold and red. Absolutely beautiful, had gold statues of saints and space marines. Don't know what planet they came from, but they must have had more money than Secundu did. Must have been a damned utopia by comparison.

From the shuttle I saw uncountable ships falling to the planet. Some looked large enough to carry whole buildings in them, some were tiny little shuttles like ours that barely held eight people. It was absolutely beautiful to see those streaks of fire heading down on the planet. I've never seen so many ships in one place.

We were the first to make landfall. The shuttle kicked us out and headed back, I can only assume to pick up more squads that were waiting in the ships. We landed in the center of a wrecked city. White stuff, snow Octus told me later, was all over the place. It was falling pretty heavily, the wind picking up long strings of it and laying it over the toppled buildings like a mother tucking her children in bed. From the inside of the shuttle everything looked so incredible. The sky scrapers were disheartening, especially when I noticed some were burning from the inside out, but I had never seen anything like it. Then the commissar kicked us out, ordering us to the camp's gate while he went to get some other orders. The commissar was the last out of the shuttle, and when his feet hit the ground the pilot was back up and into space.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)19:21 No.2975048
I wasn't prepared for the cold. Like I said, I've never really dealt with the cold before. The forges I worked at were barely air conditioned. Even my home didn't have a whole lot of it. Enough to keep me from sweating to death, but didn't have enough money to afford anything else. No one in the squad was ready for it. Only Xerxes managed to keep himself from obviously shiverring and he still shook every now and again. Our armor might have softened a blow or stopped the occasional solid projectile but it didn't have much insulation. We trudged through feet of the snow on the way to the gate. The entire camp was encircled in a wall. The wall was noticeably bigger than the camp. Maybe room to grow, maybe they just ordered the wrong parts. The camp itself wasn't very big. There was a wide single story building in the back of the camp that I assume was the field command. Some concrete barracks and an armory not far from them. Only about six buildings, no noticeable medical building or vehicle depot. We definitely weren't the main base of operations. Still, we were important enough to get metal walls and five guard towers. We were guarded by our metal pentagon, a tower at each corner. There were two sets of sand bags positioned near the gate, meter or so deep holds dug in front of them. The one at the right of the gate was taken up by another squad. I didn't see any other ships ahead of us, so I can only assume they'd been here for a while. We piled into the one to the left, our missing man giving us some room to move. I saw Roth pull out a pack of cigarettes, light up one and put it in his mouth before offering to the card guys. Only Hans took. Roth then offered one up to Xerxes before passing the pack on to me. I guess it was a peace offering for being such a creepy dick most of the way here.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)19:23 No.2975059
And hey, who am I to say no to a free cigarette? I grabbed it, used his lighter, then leaned my lasgun against the wall of our little pit and looked out of the gate. I'd never been on another world before. Then again, I'd never been in space before either. Or ever shot a lasgun before the draft. I took a drag as I tried to make out what was just beyond the gate. Same thing on the ground level as I saw coming in though. What I assume was an apartment build on its side, flames coming through some broken windows and trying to make their way to the top. Random metal pipes and bars embedded meters into the snow. The whole approach to this base was messy and difficult to traverse. I had a hard enough time trudging up here. I can't even begin to imagine trying to charge this place over that bumpy terrain. Seemed like we would have it easy.

A few other ships came by, including the shuttle that brought us down here. Only about five though. They filled the towers without so much as a word to us. Didn't matter, we were kind of absorbed in our own little post. Hans and Titus grabbed Roth and were playing BS on the ground. I guess the snow constantly covering their cards didn't bother them much. Me and Octus were watching the approach, keeping our lasguns right next to us leaned against the wall. Xerxes was in the back, resting against the wall and watching us.

"You think we're going to get attacked this early?" Octus commented, breaking the self enforced silence. Roth and the card guys looked up from the game for a bit. It was the first time any of us had talked since we went into the shuttle. None of us had been off world before, the whole experience was a little jarring.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)19:24 No.2975065
"Maybe." Xerxes replied as he looked up into the sky. Probably trying to examine the snowflakes. I know I couldn't keep my eyes off the little white balls falling through the air, even if it meant exposing my eyes directly to the freezing winds. Roth and the card guys went back to their game. Octus didn't seem particularly pleased with Xerxes' answer. I don't think he was prepared to shoot any one. I looked over at the squad at the other pit. They were basically doing the same thing, one guy watching the path up to the camp while the rest talked to pass the time.

The next hour passed mostly in silence. The occasional 'Bullshit!' from one of the card guys, Octus explaining some of the features of the world that I didn't recognize, and Xerxes staring up into the sky, asking about the other ships that were with us. Octus didn't have an answer, he didn't know what planets they came from. Kind of funny, to be allies with people when you don't even know where they come from.

Our second hour marked the first bit of interest though. I caught a figure moving in the distance amongst the snow. He wasn't heading towards us. He was just moving amongst the wreckage, looked like he was picking up stuff. I didn't know if I should call it. He wasn't coming to us, hardly seemed threatening. Didn't have to though. One of the guys in the towers by the gates made the call.

"Target spotted!" Xerxes grabbed his weapon and stepped over the card game to join us. Titus packed up the cards and the other three joined us at the sandbags.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)19:25 No.2975076
"Doesn't look like an enemy." Octus echoed our thoughts. Not that our thoughts mattered. I heard the distinctive sound of a lasgun discharging. Crack shot, whoever was in the left tower. Saw that red line hit the figures head. He toppled over in the distance, disappearing under a mound of snow.

"Damn it. Now we're going to have to start a new game." Hans grumbled. Titus pulled out the cards and they headed to sit back down.

"Why'd they shoot him? Didn't seem hostile." Octus asked, a little pale. Nope, poor kid wasn't ready to shoot anyone.

"I guess one of the snipers up there saw some of the enemy's colors." Xerxes replied. The big man seemed strangely disturbed by it. Didn't think he'd be shaken by a dead man.

"Just se- hostiles!" Octus screamed out. I stopped inspecting the squad across from us and snapped to look at the front. There was a line of dark figures on the horizon. Me, Octus, and Xerxes took aim while the other three took up positions on the sandbags. The guys across from us rested their lasguns on top of the sandbags and took aim. Six guns from us, eight guns from them. Couldn't see how many in the towers, didn't catch them on their way in.

There was a minute of silence as the guys started running at us. Every one kind of froze up. There were a lot of them. Did we really have enough people here to take them down? Did we have the fortifications?
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)19:26 No.2975082
The questions stopped the second Roth fired. The camp became one giant laser pointer aimed at that black line in the distance. We just sort of pointed our lasguns in their direction and started firing. We couldn't really tell when we hit some one. That black line just ate up the lasers. Every now and again you could recognize some one being lanced by lasgun fire but we couldn't otherwise tell we were killing them. The line kept advancing over that broken terrain, kept getting closer. Eventually we could start making out details. They were people, men and women, armed with whatever they could get their hands on. Pipes, swords, axes, I think I saw a limb or two in there. They weren't dressed in any kind of uniform. Like their weapons, they were wearing whatever they could grab. Some came very close to wearing nothing at all. Could make out a few people running with blackened limbs. Must have been the effects of exposure. But the closer they got the more often we started to hit. The slower the line advanced.

But these guys were crazy. We killed some one and they just charged over the body. Hurdled them some times. I saw a guy get tripped up by a bar and just get trampled by his allies. They didn't care that they were dying by the truckloads. They didn't care that they were under equipped masses trying to take on the Guard. They were either brave or stupid.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)19:28 No.2975101
"God Emperor damn, how many of them are there?" I heard Titus mutter under his breath as we kept up the fire. I suppose it was a good sign that we didn't see the mass of people stretch back to the horizon but they still seemed endless. We just kept pumping lasers into that horde of men and hoped they'd stop. They eventually did. But not before we saw their faces.

I saw the young and the old amongst them. I saw an old man. I killed that old man. It was easy to kill them when they were just dots on the horizon. But when I saw him, when I almost heard him scream it was different. I stopped firing for a second but it felt like an eternity. Just watched the life drain out of that old mans eyes as he fell beneath the feet and boots of his friends. Xerxes hit me in the shoulder to snap me out of it and I started firing again.

The last one down managed to hit just inside the gate. Octus caught him in mid air. The crazy sunuvabitch was alone and he didn't even think to run. He just tried harder. Grabbed a sword from a guy that fell beside him and tried to jump through the gate. He was screaming. Screaming real loud, screaming something I could barely make out. Octus caught him in the chest. He fell face first into the snow, dropping one of his two swords mid air. I think it stopped in front of the sandbags that the other guys were behind. I didn't really try to track it though.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/10/08(Mon)19:29 No.2975109
"All clear!" I heard from the towers. And like that everything was silent again. Titus, Hans, and Roth didn't show any physical signs of being phased, but they weren't talking either. Xerxes looked a little worse for the wear. But Octus, poor Octus. He was white as a ghost. He just kind of kept looking at his gun for the rest of the day. Luckily no one else came through the front gate. The winds blessed us to not have to smell the bodies, either. Well, I'd guess the wind did. I'd always heard bodies rank.

When the sun started to sink beneath the wrecked city Commissar Heimdall came to relieve us. We headed to Barracks 1 to rest. None of the other squads came with us. I was the only one in my squad to look back at that gate. The pit was empty. It didn't look like anyone was coming to fill in for us. Must have been short on men.

I guess you work with what you got, even when it's us.

Back in the barracks, Hans and Roth went straight to their bunks. I could tell that they were tired. The battle ahd obviously shaken them. I understood. I was just thankful that my commsiar hadn't executed me in that second that I stopped firing. I'd heard tales of that and worse. Some of them would execute an innocent man simply to 'motivate' the rest of the squad. I could tell that they were tired. The battle ahd obviously shaken them. I understood. I decided to shower off, in the hottest water I could get. I couldn't stop thinking about that old man, the way the life started to drain out of his eyes. As i stepped into the showers, I found Octus inside.

Suddenly I grabbed my massive dildo, full of rusty nails and broken glass. "What the hell are you doing?!?!" he screamed as i shoved it into his tight asshole. In and out, in and out, The dildo went. His sobs and screamed served only to make my dick ahrder. His ass was bleeding gallons of blood. I then got an idea.... I stuck my massive cock down his throat while I stabbed out his eye. Then I took my cock out and skullfucked him until he died of blood loss.

The guys that had been taking up the pit across from us woke us up while the sun was still. It was , but I guess with no one to cover our post we couldn't really risk sleeping too long. Xerxes didn't seem to mind the lack of sleep. Maybe he was one of those guys that thrived on stress? On the way to our post Roth wouldn't stop complaining. Don't know why he was bitching so much. He seemed much more stable than Octus. Creepy fuck probably enjoyed killing those guys yesterday. Octus was still just staring ahead. When we were closer to our post I noticed a servitor was waiting for us, holding some black bag in its wrench-like hands. Roth leaned over to Titus as walked closer to it.

"The warp is that thing?" Roth almost sounded sick. What surprised me the most was that Octus didn't seem to mind. I wasn't really sure he noticed it.

"Dunno." Titus shrugged as looked the man-machine over.

"Heard the tech-priests back on the ship call them servitors." I piped in. Roth looked over at me and then back at the servitor.

"Well, that's gonna give me nightmares." Roth shook his head as he went for his pack.

"What, you can rape all the heretics you want but a mutilated body puts you off?" Xerxes smirked as we stopped in front of the servitor.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/11/08(Tue)03:05 No.2977364
"Hey man, fuck you." Roth grumbled. He never really did live down that particular comment, and I still don't believe he was just joking.

"I'm sorry to have offended you." The servitor apologized in that calm monotone the others I had heard had. Would have been soothing were it not for the mechanical gears grinding in its throat. Poor thing must have been confused.

"What? No, not you... er... is that thing even alive?" Roth raised an eyebrow as he stepped closer to inspect it.

"Your guess is as good as mine." What was I going to say, I'd had an engaging conversation with one before? I'd never really seen them treated like humans nor respond like them. I just kind of assumed they were machines draped in flesh.

"I have come to deliver your daily rations." The servitor's either inability or unwillingness to clarify was probably indicative enough it wasn't really alive. It extended the black bag to us, leaving it hanging off of its wrench hands for a bit while we decided just what to do.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/11/08(Tue)03:05 No.2977365
"Uh... thank you?" Xerxes finally spoke, taking the black bag. The servitor then headed to field command. Didn't notice until then, but it had no legs. Left some wide tracks in the snow as it went off. We finally dropped down in the pit, Xerxes handing out some packages labeled 'breakfast'. Upon unwrapping the little red parcels it wasn't particularly appetizing. Our breakfast was some yellowish block which I assumed was eggs and some old tin forks, knives, and mugs filled with coffee with caps on them.

"To the God Emperor." Hans spoke, lifting up his mug before downing a large gulp of the cold coffee. I poked the block of eggs a little with some disgust. Hardly a home cooked meal. Even the food back on the ships looked like it was better than this. After a few minutes I finally relented and started eating that block. It wasn't necessarily bad tasting, just very bland. I could just barely recognize an egg like flavor. For all I knew it could have been tofu dyed yellow.

Xerxes was first of us to finish. He looked at his tin utensils with a little confusion before putting them in the mug and back in the bag. One by one we followed and took to our positions like yesterday. Titus and Hans started up a new card game, Xerxes rested against the back of the pit, and me and Octus took the sandbag. Roth went around the pit handing out cigarettes. Again me and Titus accepted, again Xerxes and Hans declined. Yet this time around Octus took one. He looked so strange looking over the cigarette.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/11/08(Tue)03:06 No.2977366
"Gonna just play with it or are ya gonna smoke?" Roth badgered poor Octus. He didn't speak, just held it out and let Roth light it. He then turned around and leaned on the sand bags with me.

"When did you start smoking?" I asked, taking a deep drag off of mine as Octus looked anxiously at his.

"Well... I see you guys smoking and you seem so calm. It seemed like maybe now's a good time to start." Octus looked down at the snow as he continued to play with his cigarette.

"I don't know about that." I shook my head and smiled a little. Poor little Octus.

"What could go wrong?" He tried to come off as a little more manly than he was. He took the cigarette to his lips and took a nice deep drag. He then starting coughing, throwing the cigarette into the snow and trying to keep from vomiting.

"That." I smiled as he held back his lungs.

"How do you guys enjoy that?" Octus managed to blurt out before another coughing storm.

"Delicately, and with years of experience." Hans replied, not even looking up from whatever game him, Titus, and Roth were playing. Octus suppressed the urge to lose a lung again, going back to resting on the sandbags, hanging his head over it and looking down at the snow. For a while there was only the sound of cards being dealt and the wind. I tried to keep both an eye on the path up to the base and Octus at the same time. Kind of odd, no one had cleared out the bodies. Figured they'd at least get the servitor to move that one that was inside the base.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/11/08(Tue)03:06 No.2977369
Finally Octus broke the silence, "How do you guys do it?"

"Hmm?" I flicked my cigarette butt into the snow and turned to face Octus.

"How do you guys live with yesterday? None of you really seem to care. We killed people. Not just one person, we killed who knows how many other people and you guys are just doing what you were doing yesterday." Octus pulled himself off of the sandbags and looked back at the other guys in the pit. He looked really desperate now, almost like he wanted to run.

"Well, me and Titus over here had to shoot some of our own back in basic so I guess we're kind of desensitized to the whole murder thing," Hans began as he motioned to him and Titus, "Xerxes over there doesn't seem to know how to show any emotions. He's not lookin' at the snow though." Xerxes let his head roll down to look at us before looking back up at the sky.

"Thaddius froze up yesterday, so he's not exactly taking the whole thing well. Probably coasting on distractions and meaningless thoughts so he doesn't have to confront that. And Roth over here? I heard him crying himself to sleep." Hans smirked at the last one.

"Fuck you, it's cold. I had the sniffles." Roth flipped him off, pulling his cards closer to his chest.

"Only four aces in this deck." Titus commented, causing Roth to throw his arms in the air before tossing his cards onto the ground.

"Yeah yeah yeah. I'm folding." Roth grumbled as he stood up and walked over to us. Hans shrugged, grabbing the discarded cards and shuffling. Roth patted Octus's shoulder.

"You did what you had to do to survive. If you didn't kill him, he'd have killed you. You can argue the philosophy later, but right now you're in the middle of a war. You don't have the luxury of that much morality. And hell, you saw those guys. They came charging at us with what? Pipes and sharp sticks for the most part. They're crazy. They'd have probably done worse to you than what you did to them." For once Roth actually seemed to be kind of human. Octus looked up at him then down at the snow.

"Go sit with Xerxes, man. I'll cover for ya." When Octus didn't respond I put a hand on his shoulder.

"The big guy seems like the thinking type as well. Besides, Roth needs to take a shift up here some time. Probably the best chance we're gonna get." And that seemed to work. Octus nodded before pushing himself off of the sandbags and heading to go sit back with Xerxes. Roth stepped closer to me to get a better view of the pass. I heard Xerxes and Octus start up a conversation, but the two talked too lowly for me to hear it over the winds. We passed the next hour or so like that. Xerxes and Octus just talking, and me and Roth looking ahead without talking.

The only warning I had that the commissar was coming was the sudden sound of shuffling cards followed by panicked scrambling between Titus and Hans over who'd hold the pack. Xerxes and Octus didn't move to stand up, though when I turned around to see see what would cause the card guys to stop their game the two looked worried. Heimdall looked down at the two, eyebrow arched, before looking over at the still scrambling Titus and Hans before looking at me and Roth.

"I'll inform the rationing department of your lack of discipline." He commented, grimacing into an even uglier man than before.

"Your weapons should at least be slinged over your shoulder if you're not going to keep them at the ready. You two, I did see those cards. Save them for the bunker. And you two, get up. You're soldiers, you're here to kill not on vacation." The commissar shook his head as Xerxes and Octus tried to quickly rise up to their feet, parting to the sides in case the commissar was going to get into the pit.

"We've been given orders to scout when the other pit squad wakes up. We'll be heading out as far into the city as we can reach before sun down. Don't expect to be back to the bunker before sunrise." The commissar then stepped down into the pit and walked up to the sand bag. Without even looking at Roth he jammed his hands into one of his pockets and pulled out a cigarette. He pulled out his own lighter, a silver box with a gold winged skull on the front, and lit it up as he looked out at the world beyond the gate. Roth looked down at the pocket he had the pack in, then back up at the commissar with some confusion. He looked over at me behind the commissars back. All I could do was shrug before pulling my rifle up off the ground and joining Heimdall in observing the frozen wasteland beyond

I find it a bit strange that there is no clear squad leader or sergeant in the group and instead relies on a commissar to take care of such a small unit. There is also a puzzling lack of officers or references thereof.

Eh, I blame it on the whole drafting thing. I wouldn't imagine in a sudden "We need some soldiers, now" situation everyone's going to get saddled with people who have any actual experience.

As for the commissar, I just like commissars. Well, that and I do actually intend to show him dealing with other squads, such as where he went during the little travel to the planet. He just takes a liking to this one because he's an old dick.

Your squad needs a Sargent. Every unit needs a sarg to stand between the great unwashed masses and the enlisted men. To act as a buffer, translate orders from 'get everyone killed' to 'something we might live through'. Make sure the officers never learn what the men are REALLY like, and vise versa.

With regards to the lack of an NCO, it's entirely possible that one of the "cast members" is going to be promoted soon. But yeah, militaries survive on having obvious, omnipresent hierarchies. Men should ALWAYS know who they're reporting to. Have the commissar arbitrarily assign one of them as squad leader, at the very least, even if it doesn't come with an immediate promotion.

Also, not all sergeants are scarred badasses with eyepatches and cigars. I got promoted to sergeant within my three-year tour, and had my own command. It really was very much translating orders like "Go kill them. Most of you will die" into "Okay, let's figure out how to get the job done our own way without getting killed, and hope no officers are watching, because if they do they'll kill us anyway".

The remaining time in the pit was kind of awkward. No one was going to talk around the commissar, play games, anything that might be regarded as 'disobeying orders'. It was strange though, his presence was almost calming. Well, at least to me and Octus. Roth was distrustful and seemed to be fidgeting constantly in the corner of my eye, Xerxes almost seemed dead inside while the commissar was around, and Hans and Titus looked ready to run. The commissar didn't bother them in the ship, but now that he was down here in the pit they looked really antsy. I guess being dirty reminded them too much of their training. Another agonizing hour of silence passed by when I noticed one of the tower squads at the gate come out. A servitor rolled passed us, another one rolling up to our pit.

"Please provide your rations pack." It extended its arms out. Xerxes was the closest to the machine-human thing, and after another short staring session he grabbed the pack and held it up. The wrenches slipped under the straps and it was gone. The other servitor, the one that had passed us, was waiting out in front of the tower closest to us with a black bag like the one we were given in the morning. I leaned a little closer to Heimdall, deciding to take the servitor's interruption of our silence to ask the commissar a question or two.

    "Sir-"

    "Commissar." Heimdall grunted.

"Commissar," I began again, not wanting to infuriate the man with the right to kill me, "what happened to our other squad mate? We had eight bunks."
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/11/08(Tue)16:22 No.2979854
"The other two were caught up in Administratum errors." It was a blunt reply, but it confused me. Other two? Wasn't the commissar with us?

"The seventh bunk wasn't for you?" Octus piped up. I didn't even notice he was on the other side of Heimdall. Roth must have shifted away as fast as he could.

"I'm the only commissar at this base. I'd wish we'd have had enough commissars for one to every squad to deal with the traitors and cowards that crop up in wars like these, but Secundu doesn't have enough trained personnel for that. It doesn't even have enough to get a commissar at each base, and none of the other planets are willing to lend us the resources or troops we need. I'm only here because you're a bunch of rookies and some one in the scout party needs to know what to do." Heimdall was surprisingly open with us about all this. Maybe the older a commissar got the less zealous they were about killing?

"That's why we're the scout squad, hm? If we get wiped out, that's not nearly as big a dent as another squad." Octus seemed almost reassured in being considered expendable. Or maybe it was just figuring things out that was taking his mind off of killing.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/11/08(Tue)16:23 No.2979861
"You're a smart one. Make sure you don't let your mind wander in the wrong direction though." Heimdall fell silent, watching the city again. Octus started to open his mouth to respond but ultimately decided against it.

Another two hours, another squad leaving their post to head to the bunkers. One servitor moved to the just filled tower for clean up while another servitor headed to the other pit. Heimdall finally looked away from the gate when he noticed the servitors moving about.

"Get your weapons, we're moving out." As the commissar headed out of the pit everyone turned to face him. Once he had stepped out we stuck close behind him while he headed to the gate. We stepped over the body of the crazed swordsman and took our first good look outside the gate since we had landed. The entire place stunk of rotting bodies and other foul matter. Roth tried to pull the collar of his shirt up to cover his nose while coughing.

"Titus, point." Heimdall barked, producing a map of the city with various markings on it and handing it to Titus. He unfurled the map, taking a look at the map before looking up at the wrecked buildings before him. He looked like he wanted to protest but he wasn't about to say no to a commissar. He looked down at the map again before curling it up and tucking it away. He had a good idea where he needed to head. At least, as best he could. I managed to sneak a good look at the map before it put it away, the thing wasn't exactly up to date with the current issues. The base was marked as being located where an old junk yard was. Maybe that was where they got the building materials from.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/11/08(Tue)16:23 No.2979866
Titus set out over the bodies and we followed behind him. We didn't even consider going around the bodies. Inefficiency would mean death. Octus looked like he was going to be sick but he managed to keep it in. The only person who didn't seem affected by the smell was Xerxes. I could only imagine that his sense of smell had been killed back on Secundu. I did notice something else odd. Heimdall was drifting towards the back of the group. The better to watch for an opportunity to execute is the only reason I could imagine. Didn't exactly put me at ease, having the most experienced guy in the back watching us.

We marched in silence, ever mindful that right behind us was our executioner. If it weren't for him I probably would have stopped halfway through the field of bodies to provide them my breakfast. Octus tried to keep his face turned away from the rest of us, disguise it as being alert, but every now and again he slipped up and I saw that look on his face. Horrified. Pale. Ready to give in, give up. I don't think it was the commissar keeping him loyal though. The commissar seemed like a curiosity to him. I always got the impression we were his only friends, maybe the only he ever had. Maybe I was wrong, but I think he would have stayed for us. I couldn't figure out why Roth didn't break out into a run though. He was stupid, he'd have risked a run from a commissar. Maybe he just thought a night with a heretic was worth all this.

When we had finally made it to the point that we couldn't see the base I started to realize just how badly this snow limited our visibility. On the approach to the base and from the base I had managed to not see the thick pillars of black smoke coming out of the city. We actually had the high ground in comparison to the rest of the city. Surprised me, always figured we'd be far down in some sort of basin. While we looked down at the city from the hilltop Hans let out a loud whistle.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/11/08(Tue)16:25 No.2979878
"That's place is wrecked." Titus blurted out as we surveyed the wrecked city. It was what we were all thinking. It was like a tornado had ripped through this place and decided to come back for an encore.

"Heretics." Heimdall grunted. I wasn't really sure if it heretics could do all this, but I wasn't going to question the commissar out loud. Titus grimaced as he noticed a nice big building that had been knocked over and almost completely blocked off the street. It was just barely being held up by the wrecked skeleton of another building it had fallen into. It looked like it was ready to hit the ground and crush anything in the little pathway underneath it.

"Commissar?" Titus sounded worried, he didn't particularly want to pass under something that unstable looking. But there was no visible path into the building and moving around the wreckage would take more time than we had.

"Straight ahead." Heimdall grunted again. Titus took a deep breath, nodded, and took the lead again. On the way down the hill I saw Octus looking back and forth through the sky scrapers as if he was tracking something. I slid through the group to stand next to him. Last time today he stopped looking horrified he was talking to the commissar.

"What d'you see?" I tried to talk low, hoping not to infuriate the commissar.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/11/08(Tue)16:25 No.2979881
"We're being watched." Octus held his hand out and pointed some faint lights in the buildings, "The buildings are cut off from power and those lights are waning and waxing. I think they're fires."

"There're fires everywhere. What makes you think some one'd be in there?"

"The other buildings that are on fire are almost burnt out by now. Those fires consumed entire floors, these seem contained to rooms. I just... I don't know. Something's telling me that there are people in those buildings." Octus shook his head and frowned a little. He looked disappointed that he couldn't explain it better.

"That's your gut, soldier." Heimdall interrupted our little conversation. I didn't even notice him come up behind us and it took every bit of my will to stop from jumping out of my skin. Octus seemed a little relieved that Heimdall had an explanation. I didn't understand how he didn't even look the slightest bit afraid of the man. Maybe he was just too naive. Still, the commissar had cut off the conversation by just being there.

The awkward commissar-induced silence was ended when Titus stopped in front of the toppled building to voice his concerns, "Uh, commissar? Are you sure this is a good idea?" The path ahead would require us to curl up or walk through on our knees. We'd have to move one by one and with the length of the building we'd be feeling it in the morning.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/11/08(Tue)16:26 No.2979893
The commissar's response was the distinct sound of a laspistol charging up and the safety being turned off.

"You're right commissar, I should be pleased to be passing under the building first for the safety of the squad." Titus hastily corrected himself, though he didn't move until Heimdall put away the laspistol. Just as he started to pass under the building and into the makeshift tunnel we heard a knocking on one of the windows. The entire squad fanned out, pulling our lasguns up and pointing at the windows. The commissar withdrew his laspistol, taking aim at the window as we made a half circle around the window. It was mirrored on the outside so we had no way of knowing who or what was on the other side.

"In the name of the God-Emperor, show yourself or we shoot!" Heimdall shouted at the window. The knocking stopped and for a moment there was an uneasy silence. Just as Heimdall placed his finger on the trigger a chair came through the window, spreading glass shards all over the snow. It took all my training to keep myself from firing into the broken window when I saw that chair come through. The commissar didn't even flinch when the chair went spinning into the snow just beside him.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/11/08(Tue)16:26 No.2979902
"H-hello?" A small face popped out of the broken window. It was just a small girl. I wasn't really sure how she managed to break open the window. The windows on the bottom were holding up the other offices fine. All I could think of was that something else had came before that weakened the windows, like fire or prolonged abuse. We collectively breathed a sigh of relief, letting our fingers off the trigger and lowered our lasguns. Just a girl, probably an orphan by now. She had a pale face twisted in terror. She kind of looked like my daughter. Well, if my daughter was lost and alone for a few weeks. Her brown hair was an absolute mess and I could make out that she was wearing about three different dresses with patches from another five or so dresses with some too large for her coat to keep her warm. The poor girl had a strong will to live this long.

And then her face had a large burnt crater in it. It happened so fast we barely saw where the shot came from. I thought we had all stopped aiming at the girl but I just barely saw the commissar shoot. There wasn't a shred of remorse on his features. He finally lowered his laspistol and walked up to the window.

"You were right. We're being watched." His voice was as calm and collected as always. He just shot a little girl and he was the same man back in the pit. The girl wasn't a threat to us but he gunned her down. I tried to open my mouth, tried to ask why the warp he'd shoot an innocent girl, but no words came. It was funny, my mouth was dry. My throat tightened to keep me from talking
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/11/08(Tue)16:27 No.2979907
"There are going to be heretics in that building, but it's going to be safer moving through there than leaving ourselves out and in the open. Once we get to the other side, move to the next building. Get the corpse out of the way and break that window further." The commissar barked to us as he paced in front of the window. At least he was explaining the need for us to move into the building. Didn't even begin to tell us why the girl had to die. My terror was slowly being replaced with rage. It was a little personal, that girl reminded me so much of my daughter back home. And he just shot her! That wasn't a man in the trench coat, it was a god emperor damned daemon. Xerxes was the first to move in response to the commissar's orders. He grabbed the little girl's corpse by the arm and pulled it out of the wrecked building. Octus came up behind him, using the butt of his gun to clear out the bottom of the window before starting to break the rest of the window. Xerxes looked at the girl in his arms, staring at the hole in her head. He hesitated before gently laying the girl's corpse down into the snow and going to help Octus break down the window.

I walked over to the girl's corpse, looking down at her. Her eyes were starting to get cloudy. The snow here worked fast, already covering her body in a light layer of it. I dropped to my knees as I looked down at the body. It was haunting, her resemblance. Maybe my mind was just playing tricks on me. I wasn't really sure what to do. I moved my hand to pull her eyelids down but something stopped me. The commissar's hand gripped my bicep tightly. The old man had a lot more strength than I thought.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/11/08(Tue)16:27 No.2979909
"No mercy for heretics." He snarled and pulled me up to my feet. I swallowed as I looked at him with a new found fear before turning to face the building. Octus and Hans were already inside, helping pull Roth into the building. Then Titus. Octus motioned for me to come next, probably because Xerxes was too damn big for any of us to help into anything. I placed one hand on the edge of the window, extending my other hand out. I gripped the metal tightly and hoisted myself up, struggling a little to get inside the building. I wasn't paying attention though, I had too many things running through my head.

I wasn't really sure any more. Were we the good guys here? I think so. But what about that girl? What about everything else leading up to this? How fucked up did the other side have to be that we were the good guys here?

I wasn't sure how the windows in the office buildings were holding everything up. Maybe one side of windows got built stronger than the other, maybe imperial construction was just that strong. Perhaps it was better to not question how the window we were standing on held the entire squad up and only dipped in a little. We were all still walking carefully, trying to move as little as possible while Titus read the map. Well, except that demon Heimdall. He seemed to want to tempt our fates. Maybe the bastard wanted to drag us to the warp now that he'd marked us as child killers. With the way he kept pacing around the room I wouldn't have been that surprised. I know I wasn't the only one watching the glass under him, both hoping it wouldn't break and praying that if it did the old bastard would be taken first.

"Okay, if I'm reading this map right, then we might be able to cut some time on the way to our first waypoint if we can get pull ourselves up into that room over there and try and get as close to the base of this building as we can." Titus motioned up to the door in the ceiling opposite the knocked over desk. We looked up at it. Seemed like it might be a little difficult to get up. Well, seemed like it until Xerxes walked over to the desk and flipped it up. This wasn't the largest office I had seen. Barely had room for the desk and chair. Probably was owned by some mid-level grunt just worth enough to the planet to deserve something besides a cubicle.

"We're here to scout, not find the fastest route to point a." Heimdall replied in his standard grunting, showing disdain for Titus's plan.

"Commissar, if I may speak?" Octus started up, looking at the commissar for a sign of approval. I thought the poor guy was looking to get himself killed, but whatever he was thinking about drew the commissar's interest. When the commissar nodded he started up again.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/12/08(Wed)05:15 No.2984256
"If we go through this building and come out the other side we'll be able to confirm whether or not it's being used by heretics as a base of operations, which is the entire reason we are here. We'll also be able to lose the attention of heretics that watched us enter the building. If we were to exit closer to the base rather than directly across from here they can't be certain neither where nor when we came out." Octus beamed with some pride as he explained his reasoning to the commissar. Heimdall looked at Octus for a few moments then nodded.

"That would be acceptable." Heimdall nodded. Xerxes, whom had been been watching the whole thing from the desk, took that as the signal to start climbing up and into the next room. It wasn't too hard for the big guy to reach up and get the door open. The bigger problem was whether or not the wall would take his weight. Roth and Titus went to separate ends of the desk, pinning it against the wall to keep it stable as the big guy fumbled around to grab the side of the door. I inched my way over to Octus when I saw that Heimdall was busy inspecting Xerxes attempts to get a hold of the doorway.

"You look really calm, man." I commented, looking on with Octus at the almost comical spectacle of a man that large jumping up at a doorway. He finally caught the rim and was starting to pull himself up and into the room.

"Yeah, I guess. I don't know, I don't think it's all hit me yet. I just keep thinking about other things and I can't think about them. God Emperor, she was just a little girl. The commissar didn't care at all, did he?" Octus started gnawing on his lip as he spoke. He looked away from me, looking down at the snow below us.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/12/08(Wed)05:19 No.2984257
"Yeah. No, no the bastard didn't care at all." I whispered that particular line. I thought it was true but I didn't want the commissar to hear.

"Don't call him that." Octus looked back up at me. He was looking a little like he did back at camp but there was more determination in his eyes. At least, I think it was determination. I hadn't seen it in him before. Or maybe I saw nothing in those eyes. I was put off and outraged that he was defending that demon of a man.

"He killed a child, Octus. He killed a child in cold blood." I knew that Octus wasn't the one that had shot the poor girl but I still let out some of my anger with him. Maybe I was taking the whole thing a little more personally than I should have. Octus sighed as he looked away and back at Xerxes pulling himself through the doorway. Some of that determination, or whatever it was I had seen, left his eyes.

"I'm sure he had a reason." I don't know if Octus really believed that or if he was just trying to tell himself that. He was doing everything he could to keep from looking at me, but I got the impression he felt a little dirty saying that.

"I can't think of one." I looked down at the snow below us as Octus had before, running my hand over my lasgun. I couldn't hold back a laugh. Everything that had happened just seemed absurd. Over the top. We get drafted from our desert home world to fight a fight I don't think half of us really understood or cared about, got dumped on some frozen world when most of us didn't even know what snow was, and here we were trying to climb through a wrecked building after killing a child.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/12/08(Wed)05:20 No.2984263
"All clear." Xerxes called down through the doorway. I hadn't notice that he had managed to pull himself into the room above. Roth was the first one up on the desk, grabbing Xerxes extended hand and getting pulled up further into the building. Titus came second, this time Roth giving Xerxes a little help. Since Hans didn't move and Octus looked a little absorbed in thinking I decided to head up next. Anything to get a few moments away from that old man. I grabbed the doorway as soon as I could, helping pull myself up into the room.

It was kind of what I had expected, a large room for cubicles. The things had mostly been bolted to the floor, but the flimsy walls looked like they could barely hold up their contents. Some lines of cubicles didn't, entire rows having ripped open and poured desks and paper work down onto our makeshift floor. None of the lights were working, but the morning sun was coming in through the windows and lighting where we were. I curled up and pulled into the room, getting away from the doorway so that Xerxes and Roth could pull in whoever wanted up next. Titus was climbing over one of the piles of cubicles and desks, getting a good look at the room for any kind of path out of here. I decided to go up and join him, put as much distance between myself and the commissar when he got into the room. Titus nodded towards me when I got on top of the junk pile with him, still studying the map for something. Trying to keep himself busy rather than think.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/12/08(Wed)05:20 No.2984264
"This place is pretty screwed up, huh?" Some small talk while we were waiting for everyone to get into the room. Titus only nodded again, still attempting to be absorbed in map reading. I gave him a glance before looking at the room again. The cubical walls that were perpendicular to the wall we were on were about the only bits of the cubicles that were still up. I shivered, feeling a cold wind suddenly rush past. Must have been a window broken or popped out somewhere. I turned to look for the commissar. Octus climbed up on to the junk pile with us, not speaking a word as he looked down to see what was ahead. The second I saw the black hat of the commissar rise up through the doorway I made my way down the junk pile. Titus put away the map and followed behind me, leaving Octus to wait for the others.

"Wonder what this place was like before the heretics." Titus mused as we passed under what I imagined was one of the few rows of cubicles that hadn't collapsed. I had never been inside an Administratum office, lucky enough to never have to. Kind of wish I hadn't looked up though. I grimaced as I saw a body hanging off of the closest cubicle wall. Seemed like he might have been a noble or something. Looked like the person, whoever she was, was wearing a rather formal looking robe. Her face had been drained of blood, though warp knew where it all went to. Part of her face had been burned off but what remained was beautiful. I felt a shiver run down my spine. She must have suffered horrible, been so confused when the building started to topple over. If she was still alive when this building went careening into the street. I pulled my lasgun up when I saw Titus had moved on ahead of me. No time to look at the dead, I starting jogging to catch up with Titus. Rather be with him than back there with the commissar.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/12/08(Wed)05:21 No.2984269
"Any idea what we should look for?" I asked as we made our way on top of another pile of broken junk. He seemed to have a decent idea where we should be going.

"Yeah, an elevator or something. Stairwell would be up there, close to the center of the building. We might get lucky and find an elevator on the wall though. We could just follow the shadow down the building and exit through a maintenance door or something." Titus rattled off as he stopped in front of a desk, "We should probably wait for the rest of the group." I shrugged, walking over to the side of the pile to take a good look at what was up ahead. Didn't think I'd actually find anything though, at least not until I saw what I thought was a shadow moving off of the pile up ahead. I went for my back pocket, pulling out a small flashlight and flicking it on. The light didn't catch anything immediately, just some snow that had managed to make its way into the building. I knew I had seen something though. I tucked my flashlight under my arm, keeping it pointed ahead while I brought my lasgun up. Would have taped my flashlight to my gun but they hadn't given us any packs for this mission. Don't think they had expected us to be out very long or actually need to use any supplies. Warp, I wasn't even sure they cared if we starved since I didn't even have a trail ration on me.

"You see something?" Titus pulled out his own light as he spoke, trying to see what I had seen.

"Yeah. A shadow or something. I couldn't catch if it was a person or not, but I don't think we're alone." I swept my flash light across the junk pile as best as I could. Didn't see anyone though.

Did hear him when he shot though.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/12/08(Wed)05:22 No.2984273
"SHIT!" I yelled when I heard the loud bang of a gun. I didn't think, just dove off of the junk pile for some sort of cover. Perhaps not the best plan, hitting the wall hurt like a bitch, but rolling kept anything from breaking. Titus wasn't as lucky though. I saw him sliding down the junk pile, slowing himself as best as he could with his foot, while one of his hands held onto his shoulder. One of our flash lights was rolling down the side of the junk pile alongside him, revealing that his right sleeve was tinted red.

"You all right man?" I asked as I got up, catching him in the other shoulder to stop him from crashing into the ground.

"Y-yeah. Urg. Yeah, I think I am. Can still use my arm." He groaned as he slowly pulled his hand away. He leaned back into the junk pile, gritting his teeth in pain. I heard something shift and looked up in time to catch the bastard who shot coming over the top of the pile. I barely aimed, just pointed my lasgun up and shot him through the head. He lurched forward, his pistol flying out of his hands as his body slid down the pile.

"What happened?" Roth was sliding down the pile in front of the doorway, lasgun at the ready.

"They're here." Xerxes stated as he came up behind Roth. Good to know some one wasn't blind. I saw Xerxes head shoot up as he hit the ground. He brought the butt of his rifle up, catching some crazed man jumping from the cubicle I saw the body hanging off of. Caught the guy in the through, spun him around and slammed him into the ground. Probably broke his neck the second he hit the wall, didn't have time to use his sharpened metal pole.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/12/08(Wed)05:22 No.2984277
"How many of them?" Xerxes asked as Hans, Octus, and the commissar finally came over the pile.

"Your guess is as good as ours." Titus managed to spit out in between groaning. He finally ripped off a part of his sleeve, tying it tightly just above the wound to stem the blood loss. The commissar didn't seem all that panicked as he walked up to the junk pile. Titus nodded to him, "I think I'll make it, commissar."

"I didn't ask." Heimdall replied nonchalantly, climbing up to the pile and motioning for us to come up behind him. It didn't look like it was a good idea for Titus to move so I headed up beside the commissar, pressing against the junk pile like him as he just barely came over the edge. Another shot rang out, catching the commissar in the hat. I pulled down and spun around, pressing my back against the junk pile. Heimdall didn't seem to mind though, he brought his laspistol just over the top and fired a few times in the direction of the enemy before joining me.

"Wish one of us had a grenade." Roth laughed as he came up beside me. While there wasn't a lot of space between the wall and the pile of crap, I saw Octus head over to try and get a better view at what was ahead. Titus sank down into a sitting position, keeping his lasgun close to him. He wasn't going to be joining us in this particular fight.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/12/08(Wed)05:23 No.2984278
"Think they'd be nice enough to give us one?" Hans shot back as he knelt down in front of Titus, trying to get a look at the wound. Maybe Hans was a witch, maybe we were just unlucky, but I saw a black object go right over my head. Luckily so did Xerxes, and Xerxes acted a lot faster than I did. He caught it in mid air and chunked it right back at the heretics. When the thing exploded the cubicles above us were illuminated by a gorgeous orange glow. Octus fired a shot from his corner and I pushed myself as high as I could, bringing my lasgun over the top and firing across the gap at the other junk pile. I heard a few moans before I slid back down the pile again.

"Roth, Hans, cover Thaddius." The commissar barked out as he slid down the junk pile, "Octus, keep up suppressing fire. Xerxes, head back over the other pile when Thaddius goes up. Make sure nothing got in behind us. Titus, if you're gonna sit down sit down at the other end and watch the top. If Thaddius dies, they will probably be bold enough to make a charge." It was always good to have a superior officer's vote of confidence.

"This is crazy." I heard Roth whisper to himself as he gripped his lasgun tightly. Lucky bastard wasn't the one that had to make a charge at the enemy.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/12/08(Wed)05:24 No.2984280
"NOW!" The commissar barked and everyone went into action. Xerxes almost tore apart the junk pile in trying to climb over it while Roth and Hans popped up, letting loose a flurry of lasers. Octus provided some extra suppressing fire as I climbed over the top of the junk pile. I saw a man with a sword who had had the same idea get shot down in the middle of the gap. Not a good sign for me. Two heretic heads popped up, firing their pistols at Hans and Roth a few times before ducking back under. I didn't wait to walk down the pile, I just jumped off the top and trusted my squad mates to cover my ass. I ran up to the pile and wasted no time in getting as close to the top as they could. Next time the bastards wanted to pop up, I'd catch them in the head. Though not everything goes to plan.

I saw a heretic pop up to take a shot at Roth and Hans. I whipped the butt of my gun up, catching him in the jaw and slinging him over the edge of the pile. Roth shot down the heretic right next to him as I went over the edge to take fire on whatever heretics were left. I heard the shot of a pistol beside me followed by a red laser and a heretics body flying past me. I shot the heretic I had hit in the jaw while he was trying to get up before finishing off one of their wounded soldiers. I looked around cautiously as I stood on the other pile. Didn't see any other heretics.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/12/08(Wed)05:24 No.2984283
"HOLY SHIT, HANS?!" I heard Titus scream from the other side of the gap. I turned around to see what was going on. I had just managed to catch Roth rushing down from the top of the other pile to join the group. I turned around, making sure that no one was left alive, then made my way back to the top of our little pile. Hans's body had toppled over the edge and was sprawled out at the bottom of our pile. Titus was rushing over from where he was sitting, completely ignoring his wound. He slid down onto his knees, pulling Hans's head up.

"Hans?! Emperor damn it Hans, you can't be fuckin' dead! Not now! You sunuvabitch, not now!" He was shaking Hans's head. There was a lot of blood on his helmet, some brain matter and bits of skull on the back of his neck and uniform. The helmet hadn't stopped the bullet in the slightest bit. Wasn't sure if we were wearing cardboard or if those heretics had some deep penetrating guns.

"Hans!" He shouted again at the body. Heimdall grabbed Titus's good arm and yanked him up by his good arm, forcing him to drop Hans.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/12/08(Wed)05:24 No.2984284
"Get up. We're moving." Titus wasn't responding any more. He was just staring at Hans's corpse. The commissar wasted no time in pointing his laspistol as Titus's head.

"Move or join him." Heimdall seemed like the kind of bastard to enjoy a choice like that. Titus looked up at the commissar. He looked so pale all of a sudden and I know it wasn't blood loss. He nodded weakly, visibly swallowing and pulling his lasgun up.

"Yes commissar." Titus was just barely audible. He looked down at Hans again before starting to make his way up the pile, the commissar following right behind him.

I couldn't begin to imagine what Titus was going through. Sure, we all knew Hans, but the two had always been tied to the hip. Now he had to leave his closest friend's body behind in this dump with the bastards that killed him, with that daemon behind him. Heimdall kept his laspistol at the ready, even as those two climbed up the pile to me. I looked down at Hans's body as long as I could. Everything about this felt wrong. We shouldn't be leaving the corpse of one of our own back here. His family should see it or we should give it a proper burial here or something. Something more dignified than face down on a pile of junk. But as Titus and the commissar passed by me I got the distinct impression if I were to try and do anything to the body I'd be given a swift execution. Still couldn't move my legs even when my life was on the line. The others looked up at me as Heimdall passed over the top before climbing up towards me. Xerxes handed me my lost flash light before grabbing my shoulder, forcing me to spin around.

"C'mon man. Nothing more we can do." I knew he was right beside me but it still sounded distant. I took one look back at Hans before nodding. He was right, there was no point wasting my life over what we should be doing. I let out a long sigh before marching on behind them. I saw Roth kick the head of one of the dead heretics, sending the bastard's body spinning into the wall. We crossed over the new few piles of junk unchallenged, coming to a stop over some metal doors. Must have led to that elevator shaft Titus was talking about earlier. Xerxes, poor workhorse of the group that he was, wasted no time in getting on his knees and trying to pry the thing open. It was strange, the door closest to me was resisting Xerxes with all its might but the door on the other side slid open without much visible effort. I had barely realized I was still holding my flash light, just instinctively shone it down into the shaft. It was strange, some one had installed some small ladder leading up and out of the shaft.

"Guess there's going to be more ahead." Roth stated as we crowded around the elevator. Titus was the first down the ladder, Heimdall following behind him with his laspistol in hand. Roth didn't even bother with the poorly installed ladder, just jumping down into the shaft. I let Octus go ahead of me before following the group, leaving Xerxes to cover the rear again. Everyone but Titus and Heimdall had their flash lights out. Roth was the only one trying to illuminate the path ahead though. Me, Octus, and Xerxes were taking a look at the walls. There was some odd shit on it, signs like that whale back in space had on its eye and other occult looking things. I saw a lot of the same signs repeated, the arrows pointing all over the place and some other symbol that had three arrows and three circles. They were all pretty rough drawings, some made with what I imagined was charcoal and some made with what was probably blood. There wasn't any text, just those two symbols repeated all the way down the hall with the occasional drawing of some fat ugly looking things. I couldn't explain it, but the vague pictures sent shivers down my spine. It was as if the drawings themselves were malevolent, waiting for me to look away.

"Any idea what any of this means?" I leaned forward a little to ask Octus without catching the attention of the commissar. Not that it was too hard, he seemed absorbed in watching Titus.

"I don't know. I've never seen anything like it in my books. I guess I wouldn't though, this is all probably some heretical stuff." Octus shook his head as he leaned backwards to talk. I stood up right again, swinging my flashlight around to try and see if anything on the walls might explain what I was looking at. Nothing though, these pictures were intended for people who already knew what was being drawn. Besides, if I did know what these things said I'd be putting myself in a lot of danger. I'd heard of people being executed back on Secundu for less. After a while everything on the wall seemed to be blurring together. I turned my flashlight forward, both to help Titus and keep myself from putting my soul at risk.

"You think Titus blames himself?" I heard Octus say as he turned his head to look at me. I shrugged, what did I know what was going on in his head? I knew I blamed myself. If I had been a faster shot I might have been able to catch the other guy. Warp, Roth was probably thinking the same. But Titus? Damned if I knew. I felt guilty but Titus was on some new level of despair. He lost his best friend and he hadn't been as involved in the fight as I knew he wished he was. Us that were in that fight wished we were just better but what about the guy that had to sit it out?

"Probably. I can't imagine what's going on in the poor guy's head." I sighed as I turned my light down on my gun to take a look. Somehow I had difficulty keeping eye contact with Octus. I think he picked up that I wasn't too comfortable with this conversation since the rest of the way down the shaft was in silence. Almost ran into Octus when the line came to a stop, looked up just in time to catch him stopping.

"Hmm?" I turned my light up to see why we had stopped. Wasn't the only one with that idea, Xerxes and Octus joined me in trying to figure out what was in the way. Looked like a wall with a hatch on it, some legs sticking out of the corners and attached to the shaft. Must have been the elevator. Never seen one from the outside

"Commissar?" Roth asked as we started to spread out as much as we could in the shaft.

"Xerxes, move it." Heimdall barked out. Didn't even turn back to address Xerxes, just kept his eyes on Titus. I looked back at Xerxes before stepping aside for the big guy. The entire group went to the walls as Xerxes came forward. He put away his flashlight and felt around the top of the elevator. He gripped the bar near the snapped cable, flexing before starting to try and push it forward. There was a horrific screeching noise as the elevator scraped along the shaft. The big guy stopped, lowering his head to pant.

"Commissar, this would take days to move." Xerxes spoke up, letting go of the bar and turning to face the commissar. I heard a low groan from the bastard as he looked around. Our flash lights turned to the walls, little spot lights searching around for some sort of alternate route.

"Commissar, there's a service door over here." Roth stepped back from the wall, waving his flashlight in front of the door. The commissar motioned for Titus to go ahead with his laspistol. It was the first time I got a look at the poor guy's face since we left the pile. He wasn't really looking at anything. Moved like an automaton, wordlessly grabbing the door and pulling it down. There was a metal walkway over the service stairs leading to a cut out section of the wall, looked like some one took a bad torch and poorly welded the walkway to doorway. Me, Octus, Roth, Xerxes, we were looking at each other trying to figure which one of us had the balls to go over it. But Titus just started to walk across without so much as a complaint. Heimdall still kept behind him. If Titus was going to run, he would have done it earlier. Not the commissar cared. I think he just enjoyed pointing his laspistol at people. Probably pulled the legs off of bugs when he was a kid. We waited until the two were across before we started to risk walking on the wobbly looking thing. Xerxes was the last out of the shaft, walking on the piece of metal alone.

We were standing on windows again. It was another tiny office like the one we came into, but the desk and chair were upright. Some one had pushed them into the corner to the left of where we came in. But the real issue was that there were massive holes in the wall ahead, to the right, and to the left of us. Wide enough for a man or two to walk through them and into the levels above or below. Well, once above and below this room. Some one had strung lights all along the ceiling in any of the three directions, probably powered by some near by battery. Maybe a back up generator that hadn't been destroyed if these guys were organized enough. I saw Roth's mouth open just as the sound of gunfire filled the building. Much faster, much more gunfire than before. Xerxes stepped back onto the walkway, the commissar pressing himself against the bits of the wall remaining on the left side, Titus moving past him and into the office ahead of us. Roth slammed up across from the commissar. Me and Octus were the unlucky bastards stuck in the middle. We dove to the floor and rolled into the room to the right of us. Our only saving grace was that whoever was firing at us couldn't really aim. Bullets hole started tearing up the glass, the thick line tearing past us just as we got into cover. I took a deep breath, looking across the broken wall at Octus. He had his lasgun up, doing the smart thing and watching the makeshift hallway opposite the gunfire to see if anyone was going to try and come behind us. I tried to get as good of a look as I could into the room I had just came out of. Only saw Titus though. He was closed to just sitting down. Don't think he cared what was going on any more.

When the gunfire finally stopped I poked my head out to get a look. Not the best idea, got caught by a bullet on the side of my head. Hurt like a bitch and caused me to retract back into my corner as the gunfire started up again. I would have tried shooting around the corner, but with the commissar and Roth right ahead of me I was more likely to hit them than whoever was shooting at us. I heard Roth and the commissar return fire. Doubt they were going to be poking their heads out either. This was hardly the way to end this fight, blindly firing back at them. Not that they were doing that much better than us. I took a deep breath, pulling my lasgun up and resting the top against my chest. I closed my eyes, listening for a pause in their firing. When all I could hear was lasgun fire I popped out of the corner, bringing my lasgun down and shooting at the first thing that didn't have its back turned to me. Caught a heretic that was rounding the corner in the chest. Must have thought he'd be sneaky and charge while we were recovering. I didn't risk standing out there any longer. I went back behind my corner, bringing my gun back up and waiting.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/12/08(Wed)21:24 No.2987842
The opposing fire started up again, though whoever was shooting had worse aim than before. There wasn't a growing line of bullet holes in the glass any more. Looked like some one just kind of vomited up a bunch of holes and glass shards. I wasn't sure how exactly the glass was holding up after having so many holes placed in it. 'Nother one of those blessings, I guess.

"AHHHHHHHG!" I heard a loud scream followed by a pounding noise. Wasn't in pain, wasn't one of ours. I'd take a look and see who was making the charge but the sound of fire was getting closer. I could imagine just who was coming our way. I then heard a noise similar to the sound of glass shattering. I heard bullets slamming into the walls of the room in front of me before the firing stopped completely. I took some deep breaths before summoning up the courage to step out and see what had happened.

The guy that had been charging broke the glass he was running on. It was a nasty sight, a fat man falling through the floor. The part he ran over wasn't that far over the ground so he had only fallen in deep enough to cut into his gut. He was coughing up blood, leaning over and forcing the glass even deeper into his body. There was blood was all over the glass, his bald head tilted low as he tried to cope with the pain. The commissar walked up to him, the rest of us standing back and watching what was going to happen next.

"Does it hurt, heretic?" Heimdall spat out as he knelt down in front of the fat man, pulling his head up. The guy looked like he was in absolute agony. His face was pale, teeth grit as he audibly labored for breath. His eyes were yelllow, hardly looked like the paragon of health even before he had this run in with the broken window. Couldn't really relate or feel too much mercy though, never got impaled on glass and this fat bastard was with the guys that killed Hans.

"Your kind deserve far worse." The commissar snarled, letting the man's head drop as he stood up. He brought his laspistol down and pointed it at the back of the man's head. There was a tense moment, then the commissar moved his finger off the trigger and brought the gun back up and parallel with his head.

"I think I'm going to let you suffer for your sins against the God Emperor." He almost sound jovial with condemning that man to his fate. I didn't have to see his face to know Heimdall was smiling. I didn't much care for the fat bastard in the window there, but he was enjoying this too much for my comfort.
    >> Inquisitor Angricus !IT5VxStGLw 11/12/08(Wed)21:26 No.2987859
"Your mistake." The fat man managed to spit out. His voice was rumbling, though I could almost hear the blood coating his vocal chords as he talked. The fat man pulled his head up to look the commissar in the eyes. Defiant to the last. His arm lurched forward a little, but it didn't look like he hit the commissar.

The strange thing was the commissar went flying backwards anyways. I know he didn't touch the commissar, and even if he did the fat guy couldn't have had the strength to send the commissar flying across the room. He slammed into the wall I was hiding behind, sliding down into a curled up mass of ugly. No one knew what to do. I couldn't even begin to comprehend what just happened. The fat man's head rolled back over as he coughed up a mixture of blood and black stuff, finally expiring on the window.

"What just happened...?" Roth finally broke the silence.

"I... I... uh..." Octus was trying to answer like he was accustomed to but even he was at a loss for words. I saw Titus get up and start walking over to the fallen commissar with a big smile on his face.

"Who cares? The bastard looks like he's dead."
