    32 KB Bone Machine Anonymous 11/21/08(Fri)14:21 No.3038348
    Kobold Camp question.
Would it be against the spirit of Kobold Camp to add a reaction by which raw bone is turned into bone blocks that stone items can be made from, most notably buildings and statues? Or would bone statues and bone-huts be, in fact, a natural extension of Koboldism?

    Also, all-purpose kobold camp/demi-human thread.
    >> Anonymous 11/21/08(Fri)14:23 No.3038366
I'd say it's perfectly acceptable, as long as when you enable the masonry and smelting jobs so your kobolds can construct and interact with the necessary equipment, you don't get carried away and use it for the wrong things (like actual smelting or stoneworking).
    >> Anonymous 11/21/08(Fri)14:24 No.3038384
    Sounds awesome.

What about making a small enclosed pool you fill to depth 4 so your kobolds can quickly learn swimming?

Why would you need to teach your Kobolds to swim? If you embarked anywhere that has potentially dangerous water bodies (e.g. a river instead of a brook), then with all the carp there, chances are you're already dead.

I can't wait until the game eventually allows recreational activities (for example, using the toys and instruments you can create). Kobold Camp will have a "Marblesmith's Workshop" that can refine all kinds of clays and resins and dyes, and you can have marble stockpiles with bags of marbles, and each Kobold will carry around his own personal collection on his belt, or stash them somewhere in their room, and you can have a big circle by the village center, beside a tall skull totem pole or something, where they all get together and shoot mibs.

I say it's an error because right now marriages (like lovers and pregnancies) are picked by choosing two essentially random citizens of opposite gender. Right now only heterosexual relationships are allowed, which is why it was weird to see the only on-site marriage was between two women.
Still, they were both admirably skilled and served the camp well. Couldn't have happened to two nicer 'bolds, and it inspired the moon gift comic.

if handled well it wil lbe okay. I had one kobold camp with 5 females and 1 male. The male was already married to one of the females, so that lest 4 females all by their lonesome. If homosexuality is implemented I wouldn't want those 4 single females eventually pairing off with each other due to lack of males. It should be a specific personality tag that has a 1% chance of occurring.

I agree it should never be as a result of availability, but it would be closer to 10% than 1%.

I really think there needs to be even more detail on the social lives of individuals. You can check to see how they feel about other citizens, but only in a very limited way. I want to be able to see how they interact, what they do. Occasionally seeing two Kobolds are now lovers is cute, but it would be even more d'awww-inducing if you could see things like when they exchange kisses, or have a little announcement when someone has an affair, or things like that.

Kobolds understand poison, and they could be quite clever. They know that they are physically inferior to anything that walks on two legs (Well, except maybe two-legged rhino lizards and even that is questionable) so they build traps. They gather poisonous insects and put them into pits, and lure adventurers into those pits.

Fuck. Kobolds NEED marbles. There has to be a way!

Also, a thought occurs: smelter reactions can return an input item. So you could have your kobolds build special tools at other workshops out of wood or leather, and have them be a required ingredient in a reaction, and then return themselves (essentially, this just makes it so they aren't used up). So you could have them require specific koboldy tools for specific jobs, like "marble cutters" for marblemaking, "carving knives" for corpsecrafts, and so on.

Speaking of traps... this whole smelter thing's got me thinking, what with how it can create specific items without allowing entire item CATEGORIES.
...Perhaps it would be possible, then, to add some smelter reactions for specific traps and mechanisms. That way we could have Kobolds who can build some simple spike and cage traps without having to give them full access to all the mechanical marvels that Dwarves enjoy.

It's a good compromise for people who want trap-happy Kobolds and people who want primitive Kobolds: it allows suitably Koboldy traps without giving them free range over too-complex mechanical traps and devices.

    Win-win?
    >> Anonymous 11/22/08(Sat)05:28 No.3042646
    >>3042589

    Here's the thing.

No matter what you do, you're going to have the six fundamental machines floating around there in some form. 'Mechanisms' is a deliberately vague term that can imply a lot of things. One of the most devilish things about a lot of traps is how simple they are in their execution. Animal traps may well have been among ancient man's first automatons.

Things like weapon traps seem to imply a higher level of engineering prowess than kobolds might have, but what does, say, the giant spiked ball trap bring to mind? A swinging spiked ball bashing the shit out of some poor guy - and a simple tethered weapon swinging on a rope. That sword trap could be a bent pine bough ready to swing with a sword tied firmly to its end. Serrated discs and pressure plates are pushing it, but I think we take for granted a lot of what primitive people could do. (The biggest problem with ancient engineering is that it wasn't yet a science. People knew things happened, but had no idea how or why, and thus couldn't refine their inventions as precisely.)

Assuming kobolds have human-level intelligence or at least something close to it, there's no compelling reason to handicap them other than their civilization simply not being as technologically mature as the others for some reason. Recall that most Native Americans were still practically in the stone age when colonists with steel, ships, and gunpowder arrived in North America.

I will be so fucking glad if jobs and orders are thrown into the .raws with generic behavior strings and all that shit.

    You could have strings like:

    :JOBSTART
    [<action>] [<entity type>]
    WORKSHOP:[<blank if none>]
    [<other special crap>]

So in this case you'd have a fort-wide order that says:

    :JOBSTART

    [SNEAK]
    [INDOORS]
    >> Anonymous 11/22/08(Sat)11:27 No.3043386

Workshop reactions would be started at the workshop, not globally, so they'd be part of the reactions file. According to the Dev Log, Toady's already moved a bunch of workshop orders into the raws so as soon as the next release we'll get to customize a lot of the things civs can make, how they make them, and a whole bunch of aesthetic fluff to go along with it. It should allow for a lot more stylistic customization which could really benefit Kobold Camp.
By the end, Toady said he wants almost everything in the game to be easily tweaked from the raws, allowing not just simple gameplay mods, but total conversions of every aspect. I'd like to see Kobold Camp then.

I'll just integrate it all into the next version of KC, along with any new items/smelter reactions we can manage.

I love all the idiots on the Bay12 forums screaming about how Kobold Camp sucks because you can't form enormous traps and can't smelt your own weapons.

    Depends on mood?

Or maybe it's like Daschund/Doxind ears, where the ears are to big to move up, but can rotate on an x-axis plane.

Is there any way to keep my kobolds from drinking from the carp-infested rivers? I even dug out a nice little stream protected from the carp once, but they apparently like giving the fish hugs much more than they like living.
    >> Anonymous 11/22/08(Sat)14:42 No.3044102
    >>3044089

Prevention is the best cure: simply put, don't start on a river. Start on a brook or something.

Barring that, designate the body of water with carp and other dangerous critters on it as forbidden. Designate your fishing zone on a body of water that doesn't have carp in it.

That's because there is no definitive playable (playable as in you can actually build stuff, not just sit there and die) version of it.

There really needs to be a way to build cities/camps/forts of multiple sentient civilizations. Even in neighboring civs, you'll sometimes find Goblin cities with human dignitaries or traders, or Elven camps with Dwarven elders, or what have you. I think a small, peaceful camp with D'awblins and Cutebolds running about would be great fun, as would an all-races-invited leisure city, a Human/Dwarven/Elven metropolis, a Dwarven getaway with uneasy Goblin visitors, and on and on.
