    192 KB Arch-Demilich Anonymous 11/25/08(Tue)08:16 No.3060768
An anon brought up an interesting fact here a couple of days ago.

Demiliches are composed of what I have heard is either a skull, or other bone of their own body. Considering that there are 206 bones in the human body as a whole, does that make it feasible for a huge collection of demiliches to form into a single, ridiculously powerful skeleton?

    Practical problems include:
Soul Gems required: We're talking 120,000gp worth of shiny being attached comfortably onto every bone in the body, including such things as the inner ear.

Coordination: 206 extremely powerful mages governing over a single skeleton. Would there be a way for one to have dominance over the others, or for them to work in unison in some other manner?

Practicality: Okay, personally I don't think this is useful in any way whatsoever, except the fact that it's freaking awesome, but if you can actually think of a reasonable scenario for this to occur in, state your mind please. Personally, I think this would just be a great thing to throw at epic-level players you don't like very much, or use as a BBEG if done properly.

    "You see a skeleton."
    "I draw my sword."
    *roll Initiative*
"You've just been hit by 206 maximized Disintegrates. Roll Fort."

The skull is a lich'd elder brain and the rest are alhoon.
    >> Anonymous 11/25/08(Tue)08:22 No.3060789
Demi-liches are the lich's lich. Considering most lich's are anti-social the chances of getting 206 demi-lich's to agree to this is more remote than of you getting laid.

What if such a concentration of arcane and unholy magic mutated or somehow fucked with the minds/souls of all the liches, forming them all into one superconsciousness, capable of untold magical power?

I, for one, welcome our Bone Overlord.

Then, they could craft skin (or an extremely powerful illusion on top), and walk amongst people as an uber-BBEG. INT, WIS, CHA > 9000, caster level 1551563279. Possibly kill a few gods while they're at it.

Van Richten's guide to the Lich states that a demi-Lich can indefinitely animate ~100 liches, who all share his mind / are under his full control.
Now make those Liches into demi-Liches and presto: Uber-Lich (IMO 100 liches should be more than enough, since some bones are too small to use as demi-Lich phylacteries).
    >> Anonymous 11/25/08(Tue)08:37 No.3060833
    >>3060814
As for the bones that you don't use just glue them in place. No one will notice.

Now then. We've decided a Skeletal Multi-Lich is awesome. Let's expand on this. Let's maximize it up a bit, give it a cool name and outfit theme, contact a draw-fag, and get this show on the road.

I'm voting armor rather than the typical robes. Because Rule of Cool.
    >> Anonymous 11/25/08(Tue)08:38 No.3060837
IIRC, demiliches have a high turn resistance, but aren't actually immune to being turned/controlled. So, really, you would only need a few really powerful demiliches (powerful even for demiliches) to work together, and they can all command the rest of the "lesser" demiliches.
Of course, I could be wrong about the turn resistance, thus making this whole post a complete waste of time.
    Oh well...

    HIVEMAGE
    >> Anonymous 11/25/08(Tue)08:43 No.3060842
206 of them seems unlikely because of the reasons you've said already. Getting that much value in gems on every single bone seems really unlikely, and even if they could communicate properly, every decision being made by a 206-member committee seems like it would be crippling. Now, if we reduce the number of demiliches, it might be feasible. Perhaps one is the skull, each limb is another, and the rib cage, pelvis, and spinal cord houses a sixth. A circle of six powerful mages banding together to create something like this makes a bit more sense, and is a more reasonable, although still soul-crushingly difficult, encounter.

Could just be that one particularly strong lich has casted Dominate undead a few times. Then made a telepathic (and physical, attaching the bones probably with some kind of magical bonding to each other, I'm voting runed metal) bond while the lesser lich was in his command.
    >> Anonymous 11/25/08(Tue)08:44 No.3060845
    >>3060814
Okay, if thats possible, that means the ~100 liches-turned-demiliches can make their own liches, to turn into their own demiliches.

There's got to be a rule about that... right? Because if there isn't, /tg/ has just broken 3.5 yet again. Lich Skeleton Gattai Army impeding...

    >>3060837 Again.
Now that I think about it, aren't demiliches single parts, not just single bones?
You could, theoretically, do it with about 14 or 15 (1 skull, 2 upper arms, 2 forearms, 2 hands, 2 femurs, 2 shins, 2 feet, a ribcage, and possibly a spine). Sure, it cuts down on the cool, but it's a lot more practical.

There really isn't a rule about that. That is a strictly "if DM feels it would add to the campaign" ability, since Van Richten's guides are meant to be used in Ravenloft and Ravenloft PCs have NO HOPE of defeating a Lich in a straight-up fight. Demiliches are just... godly by comparison.

Actually, the book with the Neutronium Golem has the Akalich template in it, which is an unofficial super-demilich template. It grants incorporeality, turn resistance +100, +50 Intelligence, +50 Wisdom, +50 Charisma, a +100 racial bonus to Hide, Listen, Move Silently, Search, Sense Motive, and Spot checks, and an at-will Trap the Soul that works on deities, among other things.

WHY STOP AT A REGULAR HUMAN SKELETON WHEN YOU CAN FASHION A STYLISED MECHA GOLEM OUT OF A SHITLOAD OF LICHES AND DEMILICHES USING THEM LIKE THEY WERE NEGATIVE ENERGY LEGO

AT THIS POINT IT IS NOT TOO MUCH TO SAY THAT THEY CAN REFORM UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE HEADLICH RIGHT

SO THE NORMAL DEMILICH JUST ARRIVES IN A TWELVE FOOT TALL LICHRIDER FORM OR SOMETHING THEN WHEN SHIT GOES DOWN HE SCREAMS SOMETHING CAMPY LIKE "LET DARKNESS REIGN! HELL FUSION BEGIN!" AND HE CASTS AN EXTENDED TIME STOP AND THE REST OF THE DUDES WARP IN FROM PORTALS AND THEY GATTAI TOGETHER INTO KING LICHRIDER AND THERE'S REALLY AWESOME MUSIC PLAYING WHEN THIS HAPPENS

An island of demilich bones of all species, cobbled together into a sleeping deity the size of a god-isle, floating in shared consciousness omniscient in their knowledge of arcana and their strong divination. It's the closest thing a lich has to the afterlife, and death to anybody, entire planes and celestial hierarchies, if they should ever catch its attention. It's theorized that most of the magical energy in the planes now flows around this construct, and this is why the magical powers of material mortals have weakened since the times of the old ones.

Traps to teleport the party to its vicinity in the astral plane have been popular with evil sorcerers lately.

Hmmm considering demiliches can fly perfectly... if the other demiliches were subjugated in some way, something like the Formics in Ender's Game, with the "queen" in the middle and the other forming a protective sphere around it?

Imagine a skull floating around surrounded by a thousand swirling bones, all with gems on them.

Hmmm would look a bit like Yog-Sothoth i guess.

Maybe if you wanted pure effectiveness, but a mech made of demiliches can warp something twelve dimensions away and turn it into a goat, by punching it in the face.

In Exalted there is a Warstrider, bone?, that has a hungry ghost sealed in ever one of its pins, plates, gears, and springs, etc. All of the ghost, thousands?, well be released as soon as someone tries to examine it.

I would think the "how the fuck do you fit that much value onto a finger bone" problem can be easily addressed. I mean, fuck, we're talking about fucking demiliches here. It wouldn't be too unreasonable for them to work together to magically create gems more valuable than anything that could be naturally discovered.

Each gem is less than half a carat in size. They are made out of the crystallized souls of madmen and each one is lovingly inscribed, in tiny, tiny script, with a single word in the Dark Speech spoken by the wicked deities who once cavorted amongst the stars. When the Omnilich has inscribed every single word of this ancient and terrible tongue onto its own form, it will open its million bony mouths and recite the gospel that ends the multiverse.

Actually, it isn't allowed within the RAW at all. The most demiliches legally allowed in one square would be something like 25, and many of them would block eachother's line of sight.

A massive swarm of demiliches that takes up the whole room is within RAW (and always has been), but isn't as cool.

    A grey goo of golems.

An ancient wizard once created a stone golem with so powerful enchantments that it can cast the necessary spells to create a stone golem. He then programmed it to create a similar golem. This is what the golem did, striking the earth until the whole planet had been consumed and turned into stone golems. Now they travel as swarms in space, a huge rain of stone golems from space that will consume a planet in days, single-mindedly turning it into more enchanted golems who will then journey on, the plague of golems consuming entire galaxies.

A blue giant star which has been prepared as a construct, had Awaken Construct cast on it, and then traveled throughout space collecting smaller celestial bodies to orbit it, animating and awakening each one.

Whenever it finds a new star or an inhabited planet, it grants it life and sentience, and then shows it the mortal peril that Omnilich presents. Sometimes it gives inhabited planets an awakened moon as well if it thinks they need the extra protection.

At the back of its vast and all-encompassing mind, the living star knows that these measures will not be enough to stop Omnilich. It must play for time, however, for the solution may yet present itself.

Eventually the star pauses its tireless work. Lich Rider has not been active of late. Does the universe dare to hope that it has been defeated?

The star travels back along its path, seeking signs of the undead behemoth. In time the truth becomes clear.

The living star draws back in horror as it sees the perfection of the Megalich's dreadful work - the cold and ebon emptiness, the resounding silence, the absence of light. Dread wells up within its being as it realizes that it has given Omnilich the weapon it needs to destroy everything.

Omnilich moves, and the star is consumed.

As the universe watches in terror, a sentient black hole - a star lich - sweeps through the skies, rendering them black and barren.

Nah, I was thinking more like blow half the planet to space along with the golems, moving the rest of the mass out of the swarm's way, or trying to hitch a ride on the new golems in order to warn the next planet.

Or maybe you could have a planet of extremely strong psionics. The whole ecosystem would be a telepathic community that could use its telekinetic/ESP powers to 'possess' celestial bodies in their near space. They could shape a huge monstrous avatar made entirely of metal asteroids and have it fight for them, embodying their RAGE. Nothing is quite as awesome as a lich though.

Ideas proposed included; Mordenkaines Disjunction. True Resurrection(which was agreed wouldn't work due to spell description) and lastly Mass Heal...If we work on the principle that healing magics damage undead entities.

    Heal, Mass
    Conjuration (Healing)
    Level: Clr 9, Healing 9
    Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Targets: One or more creatures, no two of
which can be more than 30 ft. apart
This spell functions like heal, except as
noted above. The maximum number of hit
points restored to each creature is 250.

    Please Discuss.

    Magic Immunity (Ex)
Demiliches are immune to all magical and supernatural effects, except as follows. A shatter spell affects a demilich as if it were a crystalline creature, but deals half the damage normally indicated. A dispel evil spell deals 3d6 points of damage (Fort save for half damage). Holy smite spells affect demiliches normally.

Also somehow they can cast Harm on themselves to heal despite that.
    >> Anonymous 11/25/08(Tue)12:40 No.3061563
The XP cost involved with a 206-demilich would be phenomenal.

Lets take the third edition ELH demilich, CR29. Twelve of those is going to be EL36. A level 36 party is going to get 10,800XP for that encounter, and a level 37 party begins to enter official "hard to measure" territory. You'd really have to measure this ad-hoc or as its own creature, a sort of spellcasting hecatoncheire.

Even so, I think this begins to fall apart. The demilich hits for 206 "trap the soul" attacks per turn, enough to practically guarantee a "natural 1" from everyone in the party within a round. If somehow that doesn't happen, it still dishes out 824 negative levels.

Should you manage to stay invisible or out of the 300-foot range required, you still face off against 206 21st-level spellcasters. Your target is effectively a swarm of 206 AC51 139HP liches in a five foot square. They can Telekinesis at will for a total of 3090d6 damage, and between them summon 412 18HD outsiders in advance. This is enough to fill a 60 by 60 square area with Huge earth elementals before the battle has started.

Now, assume that somehow you're able to withstand whatever magics this thing has. You still have to deal enough damage to kill it.

Your first problem is that it's immune to most magic. Luckily, it's effectively a swarm, in that an area effect that it isn't immune to will hit all 206 targets. Your best bet is Holy Smite, dealing 5d8 for a maximized 40 damage, or 20 on a save. That's 28% or 14% of hit points for a 7th level spell, 11th level quickened. If you can manage eight in the surprise round, such as four epic level clerics, the 206 demilich goes down. However, should even one of the liches scry to uncover your plan--which is likely, since odds are good that the tibia or one of the ribs is a diviner--they can take on round and spend 300XP apiece on Limited Wish to emulate Spell Immunity to Holy Word for 210 minutes.

Maximized Shatter (level 5, quickened level 9) will deal 30, Fort half (the demilich has only +10). Unfortunately, the demilich has sonic resistance 20, making that 10 damage on a failed save (7% of total) and 0 on a pass.

Lets say you want to turn undead. You need a cleric who can turn a 41HD undead and 4,326HD of those. It's a no-go unless you have superb turning ability and some "turn infinite amounts of undead peons" epic feat.

Finally, you can use Antimagic Field and simply walk in there and batter away with a bludgeoning weapon. Any charge build of yours will work, but since it's technically 206 separate creatures you only take out one bone at a time. If you're able to deal a regular 139HP with one hit, however, you can quite straightforwardly Great Cleave or Whirlwind Attack and strike every single bone. Great Cleave has a drawback in that a natural 1 is likely to end before you hit every lich, but as long as you keep the antimagic field up you're safe, except from the 412 called Huge earth elementals I mentioned earlier.

Why not fluff it like this?

Once, in a city both ancient and learned in the magical arts, there was a plague so virulent and unstoppable that within weeks, 90% of the city had perished. Though the nature of the plague has been lost in time, it was recorded that it was beyond natural fevers, unmoving in the face of magic or faith. Though the Clerics and Wizards of the city employed both heroic and harsh measures to stop the disease, it flowed through quarantines and outran every attempt to halt it, killing thousands in the first day alone. How such a plague was unleashed, and why it never flourished outside the city, are both facts unknown. However, it is known that there were survivors, 206 of them, members of the secretive 'College of Bone'. The number held special significance in their branch of magic, which can only be guessed upon. Although it has been rumored that the survivors and perpetrators were one, the College was close-mouthed as ever, and few dared the gates of the dead city.
In the ashes of their ancient metropolis, they raised an army of the dead, ostensibly to guard the treasures that the city had once held, and in this city of dry bone and derelict acropolis, the 206 liches of the College of Bone lived in harmony, working together on a great and secret project. Through the millennia, their forms wore away, and they ascended to demi-lichhood. However, this was not their true aim. The nature of the experiment is something lost in the ages, for those that knew felt it too unnatural and obscene to record.

    >>3061819 (Cont)

Whatever the project, the fact remains that nearly ten thousand years into their research, the College of Bone was interrupted by a force of the mightiest adventurers the world had ever seen, backed by the armies of a hundred kingdoms, and by the heralds of the gods. The researchers realized they were outmatched, and while their skeletal servants battled to hold the gates, they planned their escape. Shelving their difference, they decided to escape through subterfuge rather than strength. Each of them taking a bone for themselves, they disguised themselves as a simple skeleton, then, animating the millions in the crypts of the city, they fled the city while the adventurers dealt with the uncountable decoys.

You're assuming that the phylactery is anywhere in sight. not to mention each demilich has EIGHT soul gems, each serving as a phylactery, PLUS an additional phylactery hidden somewhere incredibly safe.

So, what have we decided on?
    Astrolich= black hole
    or
Uberlich = 206 demiliches in a suit of skeletal power armor made of other dominated undead, resting in a spelljammer made of even more dominated undead
    >> Anonymous 11/25/08(Tue)14:34 No.3062092
Relating back to the idea of a moon sized Arch Demilich with the phylacteries all in the middle of it. Since it has 206 Maximized disintegrates and a weak spot at its core, it has just become the fantasy equivalent of the Death Star.

Okay, so say we have a party of 4 level 20 adventurers. True to form, they represent the traditional D&D roles of big stupid fighter, sneaky guy, arcane caster, and divine caster. The non-standard part? Who these four characters are.

The Big Stupid Fighter is none other than the Hulking Hurler, capable of throwing lead spheres 700ft in diameter.

The sneaky guy is The Nasty Gentleman, a dignified spellcaster who can erupt into a mass of tentacles, claws, and spikes at a moment's notice due to overuse of symbionts.

The arcane spellcaster is a heavily optimized artificer with Craft Contingent Spell, a fully functional suit of power-armor, and all the metamagic feats needed to turn Scorching Ray into PLASMA RAY OF DEATH at will.

And lastly, the divine spellcaster is the one and only Chuck, The Ruby Knight Vindicator: capable of spending a thousand extra actions a day, breaking the speed of light, and incinerating entire continents in a single round by running laps around them.

That's four level 20 characters. Can they beat the 206-part voltro demilich?
    >> Anonymous 11/25/08(Tue)14:44 No.3062136
on the subject of demiliches, an idea for a BBEG.
A spellcaster lich who uses a quarterstaff made of a spine topped with a pelvic bone.
The quarterstaff is his demilich overlord.

Just imagine how nutters it'd be.
It could have been alive for aeons before even descending into lichhood.
There are so many memories, and so much knowledge teeming in its mind that it can hardly function.
It has perpetrated evils so foul that they've curdled the very milk in the bosom of the earth goddess.
On top of it all, it's exerting control over hundreds of similarily powerful, mad, beings all screaming for release. It is in constant danger, one slip up, one moment of failure and they will overwhelm it.

It focuses its mad eyes on your players, and a sibilant whisper grates through its teeth:
    "Where are my slippers."

    >>3062121

Yes if they form an alliance to take down the lichsphere with all free sentient races. Then the artificer designs and mass produces a bunch of flying machines with mace of disruption launchers for the alliance to fly. The cleric then finds a young man using divination who despite being low level is a DMPC that has the intuition to find the weakspot of the lichsphere without any of the flying machine's divination targeting artifacts, by using his innate magical abilities. He'll then shoot a single mace into the weakspot and cause the lichsphere to explode and save the alliance. But then in the sequel campaign the lichsphere's minions will begin to rebuild it!

You'd also have to define "destroy"
Congratulations, you've destroyed the uberlich! Each bone forms at its seperatly hidden phylactery, and the reform.
Congratulations, you've destroyed the 206 phylacteries and the 1648 soul gems that power the uberlich.
The uberlich itself, however, is very much alive.

Well, if we want we can hire Pun-Pun to settle this. Pun-Pun takes four fighter levels and makes use of Whirlwind Attack, costing five feats. With 8000 Dexterity he can sneak up on all 206 demiliches and guarantee the first turn, and with 8000 Strength he can cleave through all 206 in a round. With 8000 Wisdom, Pun-Pun can simply guess where each phylactery is, and will probably be right. With 8000 Intelligence he easily knows the secret of how to destroy each phylactery.

Almost, at least. The law of averages says Pun-Pun will roll a 1 one time in twenty, meaning that Whirlwind Attack will leave perhaps ten bones. On average, Pun-Pun now takes forty negative levels. These are negated if Pun-Pun is protected by an item of Death Ward--a spell of Death Ward will be Mordenkainen's Disjunction'd straight off.

Even so, there's a fifty-fifty chance Pun-Pun will roll a 1 on at least one Fort save. If he's unlucky, and enough bones survived, the odds are even worse. Pun-Pun is dust, and the demiliches re-form within the tenday.

My Friends and I did this once, one party of 7 Demi-Liches and a Morg.

We were in the Epic Levels, so each caster was a different class, and The Morg Grabbed levels of Monk. (This was done several years ago, before the existance of Tome of Weeaboo Fightan Magiks)

The Morg Held the Skeleton together and was generally in charge of movement, Unless we needed to fly somewhere at which point the Demi-litches used telepathy and followed the skull's lead on how to fly.

Whenever the Morg Landed a Blow, each's Demi-lich's negative energy touch went off, and one of them would cast a touch spell through the Morg and into the enemy.

    We dubbed our creation Voltron.

No, the most reasonable result is that the lower dominated creatures would no longer be dominated. In dominating their controller, you severe the connections. These connections were based on its will, which you have naturally crushed.

Strictly speaking, demilich is a template - the CR29 version you see is based on a 21st level wizard. It's entirely possible that some bones will have PrCs, or will be based on sorcerer or cleric instead of wizard.

Strictly, you need to have 21 levels of wizard, sorcerer or cleric not counting prestige class levels, meaning any PrC is on top of the base demilich. How about Oozemaster levels for internal organs?
