DM: Alright you approach the bee colony. Workers are buzzing around in the hundreds. What do you do?
Billy: I'm a fucking Emperor Scorpion! I attack the sentries!
John: Dude, Chris is a fucking giant hornet. Don't those things eat bees in the hundreds?
    DM: Uh...
Chris: I join in! Death to the queen!
John: Might as well. Tarantula rolls for initiative.
Gwen: Sorry I'm late guys! I had to look up some information for my character sheet!
Billy: Hymenopus coronatus? Wow, what a typical girl.
    DM: Shut up Billy.
Billy: I sting her for rolling up such a girly character.
    DM: SHUT UP BILLY
    *HACKAN AND SLASHAN*
DM: You finish skittering through the tunnel. There's a cavernous room, and in it you see... a giant centipede!
    Chris: Awesome.
John: Any of you have anything that can get through its carapace? 'cuz I don't.
Gwen: Not much help here. I think we have to go for the face.
Billy: I sting Gwen because praying mantises are for pussies.
DM: Dude I told you to cut that shit out.
Billy: But our creatures instinctively hate each other!
Gwen: Bullshit, when the hell do praying mantises run into scorpions?
    Chris: She's right man.
Billy: EMPEROR SCORPION'S WORD IS LAW.
DM: That's it. Everyone reverts to predatory instinct! Roll for initiative against Billy!
John: But what about the centi-
    Chris: I rolled a 20.
DM: VESPA MANDARINIA STINGS YOUR SCORPION IN THE EYE. ROLL A NEW CHARACTER.

    Pic unrelated.

I'd like to play a Silverfish, but I'm worried about the lack of offensive attributes. The immunity to disease is pretty nice, though.

Are you playing with Dragonflies as written in the Bugkeeper's Book, or the variant found in Proboscis & Pincer? I always thought the +2 lvl adjustment was too harsh, but exchanging them for the racial substitution levels made things pretty unbalanced in the other direction.

Flight, nasty-ass bite attack, Evasion as a racial ability (level 2 substitution in P&P), combined with plus four fucking dexterity. Not only that, but the racial substitution has a good progression for Reflex!

You're playing a P&P Dragonfly with two substitution levels and one level in Cunning Predator, even if you take a straight 8 dex, you end up with a reflex save at plus nine to dodge even a Bombardier Beetle blast (also broken, fucking Beetles have been overpowered since first ed.)

OP again. They are allowable, given you have some sort of good reason to play as one in the campaign. There is generally a +2 or 3 on the level table, but the "I retreat into myself" ability, limited regeneration, resistances, and other stuff makes it worth all the various downsides.

You can do it, but again, with a bit of permission.

Also the size category makes it hard to maneuver in allot of areas. You pretty much have to construct a campaign around one when they are in the game, or leave them out for most of it.

They're beasts though. Kind of like Emperor Scorpions. Which is generally why people end up dicks when they play them. See original post.

Okay guys, maybe you can help me with this.

We just finished our last session. The party had been working it's way through an ant hive, until we reached the Queen. Now we were banged up already from fighting off waves of worker ants slowly chipping away, and we'd lost our Healer-worm to a bunch of fucking wasps the session before.

Anyway. We manage to take down the queen by sending our Hercules beetle off to use it's Trample attacks on her young to distract her (he's tough enough to withstand the worst she could throw out with her mandibles) while hammering her with the two Bombardier Beetles in the party. Caustic spray is all kinds of awesome. The Spider and Mantid just hung back, their bodyweight wasn't nearly enough to contend with the Queen.

So she dies and we crawl out of the ruined hive. Everyone's in bad shape, we'd all lost a few legs each. Then, our motherfucker of a GM puts on this shit-eating grin and we find a child (yea, a HUMAN child, god knows what sourcebook he got THAT from) waiting for us with a magnifying glass. It'd been torching the Ants as they fled the hive after we killed their queen.

So when the next session starts we've got to try and contend with this. Any ideas? All I can think of is running the fuck away and hiding. We'd rather not sacrifice any party members as a distraction.

    Fuck year, Dragonflies.

I've been working on the following Dragonfly build for a lvl 9 campaign (not looking forward to fighting against Swallows):

Dragonfly Sub. 2, Cunning Predator 3, Raindrop Dodger 3, Shimmering Striker prestige (from Hive & Hornet) 1
Feats: Reflexes, Deep Nip, Fly-By Attack, Manoeuvrability, Biting Cleave, Dodge
    Flaw: Ravenous
    Weapon: Narrow-Mouth Bite
    Armour: Blue Carapace

The combination of all the awesome reflex boosts and the Shimmering Striker allows me to pretty much ignore any attack that would hit; most bugs (and, happily, birds) don't even get to roll, though spiders will always be a problem. The third level of Cunning Predator's mainly for the extra point of Sneak Attack, which is vital on an otherwise low-damage build like this- and, with speed like this, you can be fairly sure you'll have them Still Winged/Flat Footed most of the time.
Beetles are still a bitch, though-- any advice?

I wouldn't go for the bite personally, the Child will use it's swat attack, shit has a large enough AoE to kill whatever is around the attacked area unless you have a godtier Dex and a lucky as shit roll.

Distraction, then run is your best bet, you can't take out a a Child unless you have a centipede or something, those have a hellish amount of amour, even a fucking Adult Stomp attack doesn't dent it too much.

Well, the Ravenous flaw allowed me to take the final Manoeuvrability feat, but getting the stats was tricky; they're impossible with the Elite Array, and points buy leaves you hurting-- the minimum in Dex, Cha, and Wis leaves little to really help you deal damage or take any extra skills at a useful level. Some use dice-gen and hope; personally, I just fucked my constitution hard (I have a six!)...

Concentrate on the feats that improve your claws. Since you're tanking, you can rely on grappling your opponent and slowly tearing them apart. The huge damage and poison effects of the tail look nice, but trust me, a Tanking scorpion doesn't need it. The claws do less damage, but they've got a far better chance of hitting and you get all kinds of special grappling abilities.

Scorpion? Shit, Scorpion Stinger sub 3, followed by straight Stinger 4. Scoprions are easily one of the best straight melee classes, especially against larger opponents.

You could also try Scorpion Stinger 2, then switch into five levels of Ascetic Survivor; only do this if you enjoy long combats. You'll kill most opponents with less damage to you, but it'll take longer. The added advantages outside of combat are nice, but try not to meditate inside shoes.

Scorpion stinger? No. Even with all those bonuses, you won't hit worth a damn anything your own size or smaller. Grapple-intensive is good, and then you can follow with stings.
Try Scorpion Stinger 2 for the stat bonuses, then switch to something more meaty, like Undersea Wrestler (scorpions surprisingly fit the prerequisites), or the aforementioned Ascetic build.
Feat-wise, take any form of Cleave. Sometimes, you'll get a quick kill with your stinger, and being able to follow into an extra grapple.
Remember your stinger gets +4 to hit on AOE!

    >> Anonymous 12/08/08(Mon)22:17 No.3138014
Small scorpions can DPS with their tails, but if you're playing the archetypal 'big fucking emperor scorpion' you're better off with the claws. If you full attack, toss that tail in, sure, but it's not worth it to take multiattack or any of that. You've got improved grab, build to improved grapple and power attack. Remember, power attacks don't lower your grapple checks, so you can dish out some insane damage, plus all that natural armor helps because you're going to be flat-footed a lot of the time. Don't bother taking ability focus with poison or any of that. It's only really useful if you're playing a bark scorpion for damage.

Of course the real weakness of any scorpion build is flyers, but that's why you've got your own flyers and spiders, especially. I love it-in my last campaign we managed to lure two dozen wasps into a trap set by the orb weaver webmaster. That'll teach those fuckers.

Though as far as DPS goes, if you're playing in an evil game, totally roll up an assassin bug. Their poisonous saliva is totally vicious, and the DC is high enough to get even tank-type creatures with high fort saves. Nothing starts a fight out well like a bite from an assassin bug the enemy thought was just a pile of dust. Of course, you'll have the problem of the hive-insects not trusting you, which can be a problem for surviving winter if the campaign is set in the higher or lower latitudes. You can either be honest about it, and take the Symbiosis feat, which works well if you're rolling with some Africanized bees because the alignment issues won't be a big deal, but if the local towns are regular bees then you better take Camouflage or Mimic. Stay away from ant hives, they're assholes regardless of what alignment you are, even if the campaign is set after 2006, settle for termites if you have too. Rooming with ants during the winter is just asking to be enslaved or eaten.

The system should be a streamlined version of 3.5.

I'd imagine that it would be appreciated by biology dorks (like me) as well as the younger crowd. A simple system also means its easier to insert in new arthropod races.

Plus you'd get to play weird as shit races. You want to play a botfly? Go! You want to play a barnacle driving a crab like a car? Go!

    >> Anonymous 12/08/08(Mon)23:12 No.3138400
I'm thinking more like watership down with bugs, like I said. Starts out with a bit of exploring, mostly survival, but then deal with the wars between the major hive insects. I'm seeing ants as antagonists, your basic orc/goblin kind of enemy, bees and termites as more friendly, but the bees are a dying race and the termites are no match for the evil depths the ants are willing to sink to. It's up to the PCs to save 'civilization.' Of course, the world is a dangerous place regardless, with birds, mice, rats, and other voracious predators. It's only fellow arthropods which are able to be conversed with and which have intelligence, however. Other creatures are mostly dumb beasts, though some theorize that due to the malice with which some primates attack arthropods, they must have some sort of intelligence, but others disagree.
