    Here's the list:
    HQ: shas'El & 2 bodyguards.
twin-linked plasma rifles, shas'el with shield generator, 2 body guards with targetting array. =250pts.

    Elites: Crisis team #1 & #2
    3/3 shas'ui, twin-linked plasma rifles, targetting array. =195/195pts

    Troops: fire warrior teams #1, & #2
    6/6 shas'la, pulse rifles. =60/60pts

    Heavy support: broadside team #1
    3 shas'ui, twin-linked railguns, smart missile system, targeting array.=240pts
    =1000 points.

The problem? Its too fucking cheesy. Help me make it a bit more friendly. Or, you know, co-opt it for your own amusement.

Going to PR/MP actually loses you points, but using BC/MP saves you ten per suit. But that's kind of a subpar choice, isn't it?

Approve of the suitspam, but not the plasmaspam.

    Ditch the Battlesuits in Elites.

Replace with Fire Warriors and Kroot.

I mean, seriously. You have twelve models for your Troops choices. Explain to me how you plan on taking or holding objectives? Sure, all those battlesuits might be really killy, but if the enemy kills off your Fire Warriors then has a single Troops model hanging around near an objective then he wins. Even if the rest of his army is dead.

Bump both Fire Warrior squads up to 12 Strong and add a pair of Gun Drones. Throw in a chunky Kroot unit to outflank and tie up the enemy buying you more time to shoot at them.

Any points you've got left can then be put back into Battlesuits.
    >> LaBambaMan 12/23/08(Tue)11:52 No.3230259
Why are you only running squads of 6 Fire Warriors? They can take 12, it's an advantage, use it! Also, throw in a squad of pathfinders to markerlight shit for that broadside to blow away. Burst cannons are your friends. Devilfish and drones are nice(drones are free!). And lastly, HAMMERHEAD WITH A FUCKING RAILGUN WITH 72" RANGE!

List was made for 4th, where troops were far less important. I agree on bulking up the troops. But where to find the points?

Are three broadsides really necessary in 1k points? Ditching one, and swapping the elite suits to BC/MP lets me bulk them up to twelve strong with 20 points to spare.

It's the Tau Spreadsheet I made a while back. Lets you customize things much faster and easier, so you can tinker a bit.

If I were you, at the very least I'd add in more Fire Warriors rather than the second Crisis team; I've noticed over the years that sheer volume of fire trumps precision more often than not.

Heck no. For the price of a team leader upgrade and a pair of gun drones for two squads, i can get another 6 strong squad.

They can fair well enough, especially since you could just pop him into one of your other units (Such as a Crisis Suit team). The bodyguards are really to provide a slight Melee boost, which shouldn't matter too much since you should try and avoid melee anyways.

Well, with the new assault rules, even S5 suitfists can cripple tanks. Question: Does relentless mean they can assault after deep striking? The new DS rules says they can't unless they have a special rule which says they can. And relentless IS a special rule.

No. Relentless allows you to fire weapons as though you were stationary (and ignore the prohibition against assulting after firing a Rapid Fire or Heavy weapon). It does not, in any ways, allow you to assult after DSing.

    >>3230213
BC/MP is very strong in 5th, where # of shots trumps pretty muc anything else.

    @OP:

The list is far from cheesy in my opinion; anything with decent shooting firepower or multiple tanks should give it some serious trouble. However, if it's too strong for your local playgroup, you might consider:

-Vespid. Fast, fragile, high firepower. Take a lot of finesse to use.

-Sniper Drone and Gun Drone squads: expensive for what they do, few advantages compared to similar units (battlesuits and FWs respectively).

-Gunline it with Fire Warriors. Not strictly weaker, but very vulnerable to assult.

Oh fuck yes. They need to be tagging along with a battlesuit (they take the unit type of whatever they're with), but Stealths with Marker Drones (and a TL with ML) are a very tough to kill source of ML hits. Pricy, though.

Disruption Pod is the best thing in the universe now. 4+ save against all hits for 5 pts.

Weight of fire trumps AP, so the BC/MP and TL MP suits are very strong now.

True LOS means it's hard to hide 3-man suit squads a lot of the time. JSJ doesn't work nearly as well.

Devilfish are just as important as before. FWs are very key, I always run at least two squads of ten in 'Fish. (The fact that the Fish can ferry anyone around, other than suits, is a big deal as well.)

Inability to consolidate into a new close combat means gunlines in particular and shooting strategies in general got a lot stronger. If they roll one squad, it leaves them wide open to the others.

KPs mean Piranhas and drone-tanks took a significant hit. The new DP and vehicle squad rules mean they can run some nasty havoc on things.

Stealths outflanking means they can bring their Fusion to bear a lot more easily if they go that route.

Flamers are pretty hardcore these days. TL Flamers (often paired with a MP for early threat) is a very cheap suit that can hurt almost anything on the battlefield and make enemy assult units feel really, really bad about what they did.

    Hello

Your list looks tourneylike. It will own people in local shops.

There is a very easy way to tone it down.

Don't take multiples of same unit configs outside troops.

Tau have a hard time as is due to major suckishness in close combat. I am suprised that people advise for firewarriors who are very very weak.

    >Inability to consolidate into a new close combat means gunlines in particular and shooting strategies in general got a lot stronger. If they roll one squad, it leaves them wide open to the others.

Don't forget that that is one of the few reasons to have squads of 6 FWs, (IE 6 squads of 6, rather than three of 12). The one squad will die fast enough that you can continue shooting the opponents on your turn. Takes a bit of strategy to do well, though (To ensure everyone dies on the opponents turn, and not yours).
    >> Anonymous 12/23/08(Tue)15:06 No.3231539
Why all the twin linked plasma? The only things tau should ever use twin-linking is for deathrain (for when you need to hit at any range, and be useful against 90% of the targets you find) or when you're sending in a suicide suit with twinlinked fusion to kill tanks.

Get more firewarriors. you need at least 2 squads of at least (AT LEAST) 10. Obviously, you'd want 12. You can keep the suits alive (against shooting, anyways) by giving you commander stims and/or irid (or both), shield drones, and attaching him to the FW squads, it works like a fucking charm.

Knowing your model limits, I'd run it like this:

    Shas’el, 2 S.drones, stim, irid, TL Missile pods. 128

    12 FW w/ shas’ui, markerlights (140)x2
    280

3 deathrain (TLMP, TA) suits. 153

3 broadsides as you posted: 240. Consider cutting suit to add shield drones.

Broadsides can take out AV 14, the death rain take out his AV 12-10. If he deploys poorly, you can deprive him of all his armor in the first 2 turns. Then, the rail guns and death rains can focus fire on MEQs and probably waste 3 marines a turn or so, since the twin-linked nature of these guns means they won’t miss. Firewarriors shoot camp in cover, collaborate with lights to deny cover saves.

Now, you’re at 801 points, and you have 200 points to put into either 20 kroot, another 140 fire warrior group, a 175 railhead if you feel you need one, or a pair of suits kitted to whatever suits your fancy. I’d suggest dakkasuits (mp/bc/mt, with the team leader using the ion gun) nowadays, since cover hurt fireknife suits effectiveness. Failing that, go for another pair of death rains, and convert some guardsmen to gue’vesa to reenact “operation human shield.”

Hey, thanks for the advice. Appreciate it.

I've been considering using my broadsides in a bit more aggressive role. Shepherding the infantry, possibly drawing the enemy into the rest of the guns due to their relatively high target priority(broadsides make juicy targets). To do this, split the unit into three seperate broadies, give each plasma and a multitracker and.. either ASS or a shield, possibly some gun drones. I'm not sure which support, yet, because I haven't got a feel for how reliable the screening saves are yet. Any thoughts? Terrible idea? Risky gambit?

Oh, Goddammit. Fine, whatever. I still won't namefag as Michael de Jong though. If, by some retarded fluke I get copycatted, I'll use this trip.

To make this post SOMEWHAT worthwhile, I'll start working on an Ork Spreadsheet next, and then an IG one, I guess. I'll keep /tg/ posted.

    Uh. Sure?

Looking at the IG codex now (GOing to try and get the base structure for the Orks and IG done. If all goes well, they'll both be done before Christmas), for Platoons and such. I think I'll just make it a flat 6 points/model rather than mucking about with Full Platoon and Remnants. Sound OK?

Years of practice, including having to do an Economics course in University using Excel.

Man, I wish the Wolves'd get a codex update already. Looking at the difference in Tanks is annoying. Makes making stuff like this weird, since it refers to the SM Codex for everything that, say, Rhinos have, but then gives pricing for stuff that they COME with now. (50 for stock Rhino for Wolves, as opposed to 35 for the same Rhino with search lights and smoke launchers built in)

I'll leave it up to the user to decide if they want to get things like Smoke Launchers and Searchlights free or not, I guess. And it'll be there anyways for the Russ.

Same thing with the LandSpeeders... Since Wolves can apparently get Landspeeder Typhoons for 15 less points.

Jesus, that took longer than I expected. I added notes where I thought it important (Like with the Landspeeder or Pred variants), since 5th Ed Marines and 4th Ed Marines have VERY different costs.

Anyways, Enjoy! Orks will be up... Uh... Later.

Kinda glad the "Michael de Jong"/Candlejack meme seems contained only here. Kinda lame.

That's what *I* was thinking. I'll be glad when people forget about it (And the archived threads get voted into oblivion).

I'll see what I can do for IG, but Orks is already well on it's way. EITHER WAY, I'm going to bed now.

Always get the Shas'ui. You need the Ld boost in your squads.

    >>3231813
Broadsides are very valuable, throwing them as bait is pretty risky, since you won't have any other strong AV weapons. However, going Plasma + Multitracker (or SMS + MT) can be a very strong choice. ASS should be pretty standard for your 'Sides, unless you're playing a highly static army. If you split into three Monats and are willing to dump points, you can make them all TLs and take ASS + Plasma + Hardwire MT.

You might want to not do the IG spreadsheet thing, since they're rumored to get a new codex in the next 3-6 months here. Or maybe so, since that's a ways away.

I must get around to reading the rest of that series. I got up to Wizard and Glass and then he hadn't written any more. Actually it's been so long I'd probably have to re-read all of it just to remember what was happening.

It's been a bit since I read them last, but IIRC the next one (book 5) is good, the one after that is somewhat retarded, and the last one is decent.

Part of the retardation of 6 is that it looked like King realized he had to split the last book up into two novels, but far enough along that he couldn't polish it as much at the end.

Check this out, OP. I think this follows the original spirit of your list, but takes all the suggestions above (as in, all the suggestions I would've given, but got beaten to). It's 2 over, but you can fiddle with it if that's a deal-breaker.

    HQ: Crisis Shas'El with Twin-Linked Plasma Rifles & Shield Generator = 100pts.

    Crisis Shas'El with Twin-Linked Missile Pods & Shield Generator = 88pts.

    Elites: 3 Crisis Shas'Uis with Twin-Linked Plasma Rifles & Targeting Array = 195pts.

    3 Crisis Shas'Uis with Twin-Linked Missile Pods & Targeting Array = 159pts.

    Troops: 11 Fire Warrior Shas'Las = 110pts.

    11 Fire Warrior Shas'Las = 110pts.

Heavy Support: 3 Broadside Shas'Uis with Targetting Arrays = 240pts.

    TOTAL = 1002pts.

Join the Commanders with their respective elite teams, and give 'em hell.
