    Some interesting conclusions:
    - The blue pipe ends in the painting.
    - The "Do not open" box is aligned to an outside wall, may hide an exit.
    - Tell someone to tear down the new graph of buttons. The old one definitely came in handy.

    >I'm up for it. Coderfag and bad-drawfag here.

Well it's up to him, and I don't know if it's true about him looking for a job but making games and selling them online can actually be a nice little earner. Especially since once you've made something decent you can take a job and let it just sit there and make extra money for you.

Ruby has the advantage of having a clear owner (and de facto project leader) unlike a lot of /tg/ projects, which can't really be commercialised because so many (often anonymous) people are involved and could claim a portion of the rights.

Now there's something to be said for artistic integrity and non-commercial projects, but the fact is that non-commercial projects eat up leisure time when people could be doing other things, so the temptation to go do something else leads to the death of many such projects.

So personally I think he miiight be onto a good thing here, and should hire some of the people who've been drawfagging - and maybe you too for coding, if he isn't a great programmer himself - to work on some sort of modest commercial Ruby project and see if it flies. I'd probably invest, particularly after seeing those wallpapers - there's a mix of sort of loony tunes/silent hill/watership down that's quite eyecatching there.

I'd say making a "point&click game" out of it would be a waste of time. It's the RPG'y freedom that allows us to truly enjoy Ruby. I'm pretty sure Weaver intended a totally different solution to the "gas - plant zombie - alarm" piece, and in a computer game it would be a game-over, because Ruby wouldn't use her awesome hook-fu, but instead "can't use hook on window". "What do you want to send by the pipe?" "The gas has just killed you".

I'm also pretty sure the diagram was intended to be read directly, the fact that it was placed directly opposite the buttons was a coincidence, but Weaver decided to have mercy on your souls and followed you on your "mirrored" idea.

Making a /v/ of this /tg/ game doesn't work. Just like D&D vidyas are never quite as good as actually playing D&D with friends.

Still, it could be a fun game if you greatly expanded what is commonly thought of as an adventure game. It would need a lot more open endedness. More adaptability to stupid Anon's style of stupid play.

Currently that level of open endedness (that actually leads somewhere) is very difficult to implement.

Yeah, what makes the game experience unique is the way Weaver improvises the story according to the responses from the players.

Taking your example, the buttons. I also think Weaver didn't intend to make the "mirror" thing at first, but it resulted a lot better that way, because the original puzzle was too easy:

1.- Normal buttons. Tom press the correct button. Hurray.

2.- Possibility of "mirrowed" buttons: /tg/ has a nervous breackdown trying to figure out which button will be the right one and which one will kill Tom.

    >Yeah, what makes the game experience unique is the way Weaver improvises the story according to the responses from the players.

I don't think that matters. A videogame for the most part is like a book, it has X amount of content in it and it delivers it to the reader/player.

An RPG or a game like Ruby or MSPaintAdventures generates new content as you go along, which makes it potentially a lot more compelling.

But it's still fun to read Ruby or MSPaintAdventures even if you didn't get to make any suggestions, so it's obviously possible to deliver the kind of madness this method produces to the reader in a static, book-like form and still have them enjoy it. It's never going to be the same as participating, but that's okay.

Alternatively one could as you say make it extremely open-ended to encourage a more sandboxy style of play.

    It's supposedly by this guy:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Murdoch_(poet)

If you can find a list of his poems online someone and 'The Metal Glen' isn't among them, then it's possible Weaver made it up.

If you can't find such a list then it's likely he's too obscure for it to be mentioned online, so it's logical to assume that it's a real poem.

I lean toward the latter - I can't find a bibliography, and the poem doesn't match Ruby closely enough to be a marketing gimmick.

I disagree. So far the poem has matched very closely to the game. The game is either inspired by the poem or the poem was written by weaver to hint at the plot and get us interested. Again, the lack of any mention of it until now makes the latter seem most likely.

    [fucking SQL]
I'm doing a lot of work for the next thread already, mostly fleshing out new scenery and drawing a few graphics-heavy sequences to save time when they inevitably show up. Nothing too far ahead, just early stuff that I know people are going to try so we can get off to a smoother start.

Anyway, I'm really considering posting the first panel of the next session (Red's Suicide Room) now. On the one hand, I don't want to spoil things ahead of time, but then again it's only the first panel, and when a new Ruby session starts up the first several responses are usually about the existence of the thread. It would save time to have people already know what they're dealing with and be able to get right to actions rather than having to take in the whole new room all at once and figure out what to do in it right away.

    I'm torn.

ahead of time? how much time? it almost sounds as if you're not running one tonight, but want to give a spoiler of what is to come? if so, then nah don't spoil anything. but if by 'later' you mean a few hours then fuck it, do it
    >> Weaver !!t1PjjQn4qVX 01/05/09(Mon)12:45 No.3319524
Forgot to mention: There probably WILL be a thread tonight, but much earlier than usual, since staying up from midnight-10AM doesn't really go well with an active job search.

Poems and Songs, by William Murdoch.

The Metal Glen is not in it, and while I may not be an expert on literature, I'd say the writing styles are vastly different. Either Weaver wrote it, or it was done by some other extremely obscure poet, and just misattributed to Murdoch.

Anyone know a gif program that will automatically place all gifs centere along the horizontal, and from the lowest point vertical?

When I program animations I use that, but I've no idea how to do it for a .gif file

Unfortunately each frame is of a different width and height to match head bobbing and the feet moving back and forth. How would you sort this out in painter? Just sample each image at the largest dimensions the animation needs with transparency?
    >> Anonymous 01/05/09(Mon)13:20 No.3319732
Actually I supose this is a fair reason to upgrade from MSPaint; what's painter and where can I get it?

Yeah, number the filename001-007 or however many you have, and when you open it click that "open numbered files" thing. It'll ask you to choose the first and last and then it'll import it as an animation. Don't leave anything floating though or it'll copy it to every frame as you go through them. If you need any more info contact me on Steam: DRN-004

I'm going to head to the gym; if anyone wants to make a gif of it, here's the bmp (Bah, had to convert to gif so I could upload) that I'm using for her right side walk animation without her idle frames; I've just put them on a strip and aligned the feet to be on the right plane. Animated it should be a reasonably smooth transition

Thanks guys, it's my first attempt at animating chracters, normally I'd just have a static frame that moves around. My games are normally turnbased.

    >>3320121
Thanks for animating that mate, in games I just have a script to call up each frame when actions take place, so I don't really use art programs to make gifs.

I forgot to mention that obviously thanks, as usual on anything we make ont his subject, to Weaver. Cos you know, none of this without.

I'm surprised the ear-bob worked out so well in the end on such a simple character.
