"I never play D&D," he begins with mock seriousness. "For some reason, they thought that I played D&D for 20 years. They thought that I spent years playing Barbarians, Witchunters the Arcanum. They thought I played D&D at the time when Deities and Demigods was the brand new book. They thought I played D&D when I used to get up to a place called The Complete Strategist in New York." We get the point as he smilingly mouths: I'm into D&D a lot.

    Worf.... the DM.
    Mind=Blown
    I mean just the idea...
I ll bet you that Patrick Stewart was involved at some point.

Dorn stated numerous times that Stewart and him saw a lot of each other as friends outside of the set and that he helped him to really expand his characterizations (which led to all the Worf arcs on the show)
I could picture Steward really getting into things as the DM, playing a whole variety of NPCs. I used to fucking hate TNG with a passion, well... I still do, but I got dragged to see him when I lived in England for his A christmas carol A one man show (it was just him on stage doing the roll of Scrooge. Pure awesome. Those people are precisely the reason I don't go to cons. That and the fucking fat MALE retards that dress up like Sailor moon and Fay Valentine from Cowboy bebop. God... I wish that there really was such a thing as eye bleach. Man-Fay is just WRONG

But back on topic. It's amazing how many big names out there have been or continue to be gamers. And even more amazing that it's still got the stigma of being only for geeks and nerds.
Fuck, when I was in the military I can't remember how many times I walked into a dayroom on the weekends and found two or three dozen guys and girls clustered at tables with their books and dice out and gaming. (For those who don't know, in military on base barracks housing has "dayrooms" where you have TVs, pool tables, ping pong tables, and whatnot for entertainment. Frequently the Ping pong tables ended up being turned into gaming boards for mini combat, D&D, and the like. Ask a room of Vets to raise their hands if they played D&D for more than a year, I'll bet 75% or more of them will raise their hands.

His comments were absolutely spot on about playing it in the "old days". Before computers and computer games.
The D&D and the mindset we had back then was very different from the gamers today and the type of game D&D is/has become .

When a lot of that generation was growing up, fantasy was Tolkien, Donaldson,Michael Moorcock, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Roger Zelazny, MB Zimmer, Robert Asprin, L. Sprague De Camp, Lewis Carroll, Ray, bradbury. Pretty much every FRPGer back then knew who these people were, had read hundreds of GOOD fiction books (Not the Drizz't crap you find today) and their play was informed by the work of these writers.

But back to the point, there was no WoW, no Final fantasy, it was all drawn from books. A lot of gamers today haven't even picked up one of the books by these great authors... so is it any wonder that they sneer at grognards and say "You're just remembering it with Nostalgia coloring your old eyes. It was shit back then " When in fact the problem is that they haven't read the books that informed us what high fantasy was to players back then. As a result explaining old style D&D to a lot of younger players is like trying to describe an elephant to a blind man.

Fantasy was Classic Conan, The Grey Mouser, The vulgar Unicorn. It wasn't Hollywood action adventure.

Vin touched on a point there that explains a lot of why there's such a gap between old school gamers and more current gamers

And thus "TCTKG" raises it's head.

Actually, no, dickhead, I had to walk uphill in the ash of a fucking VOLCANO. Our school buses broke down because the fucking volcanic ash got into the engines and destroyed them, so we walked uphill to the school while the sky rained sulfurous ash on us.

The point here is that there's something to be said for the differences in life experience creating different play experiences. Me, I've likely got more than a few years on you, and if I've got a history of having read a great deal more books and had my play style informed by them, that it makes sense that maybe my world view is a little DEEPER than yours, kiddo.

Alsom that maybe that kids your age, but ones who grew up reading better literature than you might have styles of playing D&D that are vastly BETTER than your style. I'm not assuming that ALL younger players haven't read classical fantasy, but chances are most have not, and thus their idea of what D&D is, is vastly different than mine, or others who are more steeped in heroic fantasy literature.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I know what you're saying here. There have always been shitty players and shitty dm's who have read tons of good stuff and are still shitty. What can you do about it? Not much.

What's sad though is that there are tons of good players who are potentially great players that are languishing because they haven't learned about good high fantasy.

I think of it like the difference between a kid's taste, and an adult's taste in foods. I'm not talking about age here... I'm talking about taste. You can have a kid who has very adult tastes, and adults who've never been exposed to the whole spectrum of tastes so that their palate matures. A lot of young gamers only know a more "pop culture" view of fantasy. They might be great gamers with just that, but if they'd been exposed to better source material, they might be even better.

I agree with you, there's nothing wrong with drama, even over the top stuff. And I'm not saying it should be frozen in time either. What I'm saying is that younger gamers are missing out on the chance to not just be informed by modern sources, but by the sources that created the game itself.
I mean look at things today, Rowlings and her Harry potter crap are celebrated while great fantasy authors like Zelazny aren't even fucking discussed in college classes.

I'm not trying to snob it up here, but fuck, man! These books should be required fucking reading for gamers, just so they have a feel for Heroic fantasy beyond the Ring movie trilogy, Hercules the Legendary Journeys, and Harry Potter.

I find that beyond a certain point, taste in literature is a personal thing, rather than a measurable level of quality.

As far as I can tell, if they aren't interested in old High Fantasy, then reading a book about it won't change them. Similarly, there are those who like the Action Adventure Hollywood feel over the old books, and this is a valid opinion as well.

Assigning values like Childish and Adult tastes doesn't really apply unless you're comparing a children's book, or one of extremely questionable quality (DRIZZ'T!!), to a more advanced novel, English-wise.

but kind of hard to expect the youngin's to know about things that you oldies seem to keep hidden from the public like a god damn holy grail in a dragon-guarded dungeon.

Dude, we're not hiding them. There's these things called Bibliographies in the back of some of the books. I know for a fact that the old PHB and DMG had them and they reeled off dozens if not hundreds of names of good authors. Ya know... this has given me an idea.

I'm going to compile a bunch of these books in pdf format for you younger gamers and torrent them (or maybe someone can host if off rapid share)

So let's hear from some other old foggies about about what fantasy books you'd recommend for younger gamers to give them more feel for the books that informed your gaming style back in the days.

I'll start with Robert Asprin (since someone named by favorite series by Glen Cook) His Thievesworld series. Starting with Thieve's World (book I) and Tales from the Vulgar unicorn (book II) These were anthologies (collections of stories) that all using a shared world and characters by some of the best authors of sci fi and fantasy of the time. Authors who contributed to these books were Marion Zimmer Bradley, Robert Asprin, John Brunner, Lynn Abbey, Poul Anderson, Andrew Offutt, Joe Hademan, and Christine De Wees.
It's like reading about a campaign setting through the eyes of the characters as they are used by each of the various authors. Excellent stories all.

Serious head fuckery goes on in this series, a real middle eastern flavor runs throughout.

Fucking awesome stories, and they really give a ground's eye view of the setting. Very little Hollywood type action adventure here... it's more gritty grimdark fantasy.

I am a twenty one year old man, I have a variety of interests, including acting professionally when the work is available, and I have in the past two years started to role play. I can't find myself getting into the world of DnD for this exact reason, all the gaming groups that play this are intent on adhering to old old OLD fucking stereotypes and retarded retellings of tolkein's tales. It SUCKS, You old bastards have absolutely no capacity for change or elaboration. Orks are always stpid, dwarves like metals, elves are extremely homo. The first time I played DnD, I decided to make an Orc Character that had been orn with surprising intellect, not a half orc, a ful blooded orc. I was willing to say as a result of him trying to use his intellect to stop intertribe fighting, he got beaten up quite a bit and was basically as strong as a human due to grevious injuries.

From the sounds of it you're a 21 year old BOY... one that thinks that anything you just pulled out of your ass = good automatically.

I'm 18 and while I'm not entirely sure I can agree with the other poster completely, I can agree that you're a fucknut. Tell me, you claim you're an actor, would you just let some spaz show up at an audition and tell the other people in the play, I don't want to play the role of a businessman in this play, I wanna be a pirate... Arggh... yar! You'd fucking boot him. Guess what? you were the spaz.

    >>3522719
Bear in mind that a lot of groups these days are starting to burn out from seeing "difurnt and yooneek" fantasy, many of them just want to stick to the old classics that they grew up on. That said, what the group did was dickish, just because they appreciate classics doesn't mean that characters shouldn't still be individuals. It sounded like you had a fairly believable concept. It was a bad group, that's all.

    You're a powergamer aren't you?

That's the only conclusion I can draw from the fact that you seem to think that equating playing a game where you can choose your own character and how you want to play it, and a play where everyone is required to play a certain part to get across the meaning of the text, equals a burn.

You think in terms of numbers and having classes to cover all combat eventualities. I bet if you had to be a wizard, you'd take a fucking eladrin EVERY GODDAMN TIME as your race class, and would sneer at anyone who dared to say that a dwarf is just as fun to play.

Yeah, But, I've read a lot of books and I see what he means.

I mean, okay, suppose you're an actor, right?

Shouldn't you have read a lot of famous plays so you know your craft? Shouldn't you at least know like Hamlet, and Romeo and Juliet and other stuff by Shakespear? I think the other guy was saying something like that. That if you rp that you should know about that sort of fiction.

Wouldn't you like think an actor that didn't know about
Shakespear and other famous play writers must not be very well informed and probably isn't too good?

So a role player that hasn't read good books about fantasy stuff is like that actor that hasn't read any good plays or read good books on how to act well.

OP of the post about the orc here. You would be surprised to know that the majority of actors that i've worked with dislike, though highly respect, shakespeare's work. The problem with Shakespeare is that it's over four hundred year old and the only real reason that Shakespeare is given such a great standing is that, really, prior to his work, there was no theatre. I'm dead serious, the Catholic church essentially outlawed original theatre for about seven hundred years. They thought that people who played evil people would in turn become evil themselves and the only way to express any form of originality was by tacking on a bit extra to the bible stories that was just about the only performance allowed.

Good example, mack the sheppard, he steals a sheep from one of the three wise men, the wise men berate him and make him see the error of his ways, then they all go see jesus.

What I'm trying to say is that like the fantasy fiction that the guy posted, the only reason shakespeare is sort of reverred is that it was really the FIRST good material for the respective disciplines. Not the only good material.

    No, I don't think that.

Acting is a method, not a study. It does not require you to know history to do well, it requires the ability to emulate emotion and personality, to convey feeling that you don't yourself possess.

Why the fuck would you need to read Hamlet to do that? It's not like it teaches you how or even helps you to do it better.

    Another youngster here - I'm 21.

Personally, I *have* read stuff like LotR and Conan (LotR when I was twelve, actually. Loved it, still do, and reread it frequently)... but I'd never make a game that is anything like it. Awesome stories, but not the kind of thing I feel makes good stuff for an actual game. So I prefer to rip off some other, more popcultural (to a point) stuff, without the slightest shame.

Call my tastes kiddy, if you want, I don't particularly care - I have always agreed wih Mr Carroll in that regard - but given how much fun we're having, I'd have to ask you to kindly stop saying my style is "WORSE".

You can actually learn from the old texts, techniques that are used for particular stagecraft. Let's just say that you scored a role in The Tempest, that's going to be recreated classically, no mechanical aids. that's the selling point, ye olde theatre, ye olde style.

But you've never studied shakespeare. How the fuck are you meant to articulate the point of the play if you can't understand what you're saying. By actually reading and understanding the history of shakespeare, you get a greater understanding of how to read and perform it. A big point in favour of this is, have you ever noticed that in the solliloquys the main point of the little dialogue sems to be repeated three times, albeit in a slightly different fashion each time? That's because back in the day you had to address each part of the audience in turn, because you simply wouldn't be heard otherwise. To the front, the first third, to the left, the second third, to the right, the last third. Just look at how the globe is arranged and you'll see that this is basically the reason why. Tiers and tiers of seating, even above the stage itself, but that was mainly for the rich fuckers to show off their latest threads. Silliloquys and the basis for their use, a summation of the plot points to date, basically formed the precursor for the modern monologue. A lot of current techniques are based of outdated methods of articulation. Amazing really.

So yeah, not a requirement, but it can be extremely helpful.

Learn about the history of the sixties and utilise the techniques of the age. Or, if it's a modernisation, try to understand the point of the musical in terms of politics. A lot of plays had a very row row fight the power vibe.

My point isn't that researching the material isn't important.

My point was that for an actor to not know much about Shakespeare beyond what everyone else does is not a bad thing, and it's certainly not required reading.

Sure, if you're doing a play on it, reading it is important, yes.

But if you never, ever do any of his plays in your acting career, what the fuck does it matter that you don't know much about him?

i seem to have a dilemma here...

i've read some classic fantasy (tolkien, dante if you want to count it), and i've read some more contemporary fantasy (feist), and i've read "new" fantasy (paolini, rowling). i suppose i read them for the rollicking adventures that they bring to mind.

but i've never drawn anything more than the barest concepts from any of them.

and i mean the barest, like the redemption of an evil character or the resurrection of a great evil. i've only once built a character designed to be based off a particular person or character (johnny knoxville, actually).

even with all of that, i've been told that i run a very good, even great game from all of my players, including a 25 year veteran of the game (i'm 21).

i think it's unfair to say that by not having read those particular works of fantasy, you're never going to reach past a certain skill level as a DM. conservations of the classics is important, but as a DM, i'd rather figure out how a world i'm building works on my own, rather than using preset fantasy guidelines laid out for me by the "masters of the craft."

likewise, the view that players should be familiar with a particular writer or story only applies if you're building based off of a preconcieved world. we will be taking part in a Dark Heresy campaign soon, and everybody is reading up on the 40K fluff, especially about the Imperium. but in our current D20 modern game, we're using a version of Earth of my creation, and so they look to learn the fluff of my world.

learn your game. learn your players, learn your DM. don't worry too much about the differences between tolkien's elves and santa's elves.
