159 KB AdMech response to STC discovery Anonymous 01/29/09(Thu)17:26 No.3556122
    Ok, plot.

A group of four (rank seven) acolytes were called in to help with scouting a bunch of ruins recently discovered on a dead planet in the Calixis sector. During their searching, they combatted a number of thinking machines, and know enough to know that these are considered a BAD THING by the adeptus mechanicus and by imperial law in general. Unfortunately, upon discovering a large data device that held several hundred full STC templates for as many devices, weapons, and vehicles, an over-zealous Adepta Sororita destroyed the device with a flamer, thinking it may be part of the thinking part of the machines in genreal. The information is unrecoverable.

The official report by these acolytes contained information about the device and its apparent properties. The Adeptus Mechanicus read the report due to their own findings of thinking machines on the planet. However, this device appears to have been the only STC-Related equipment on the planet.

What does /tg/ think would be a reasonable response to what happened here? How would the AdMechs react to the destruction of this item? How would the Inquisition react to the AdMech reaction?

    Just curious.

Loss, nay willful destruction of an STC fragment? They would go APESHIT. Expect a strongly worded letter at the very least.

I don't think they'd care. I mean, AdMechs don't want people advancing technology anyway, and high-tech is considered borderline heresy.

In short, way to go Sororita! Show us your tits.

The AdMech is able to worship something other then the God-Emperor and not get purged. Think about how much influence they have in the Imperium. Secondly, as already said, STC's are considered the most sacred items to the AdMech. If a Sororita destroyed it she would probably receive a fate that even slaaneshi cultists would cringe at.

Soroita needs to make a new character.

The AdMech will torture her to death. The Inquisition will let them. After all, the Sororita isn't an Inquisitor; acolytes are supremely expendable. And imagine the bargaining power the Inquisition would have had with the AdMech if the team had recovered the patterns instead of destroying them. The Inquisition should be almost as pissed as the AdMech.

Sororita is done, no burning fate points or anything, just done, make a new character. Other acolytes are in trouble (though not fatally so) for not stopping her.
    >> Anonymous 01/29/09(Thu)17:42 No.3556263
Was there a Techpriest among the acolytes? Because he's going to get punished too for not going out of his way to stop the destruction of an STC. According to Admech doctrine, he should have done anything, up to and including killing the Sororita, to protect the STC.

Agreed. The STCs aren't just useful technical documents - they are imbued with a spiritual significance which elevates them to sancrosance. They are the Holy Grail of the Quest for Knowledge - there is no such thing as too many resources spent tracking down the barest rumour of a scrap of a printout, never mind an actual system. They are Holy Scripture, the original fount of knowledge from which mankind supped and justified his sentience. That "over-zealous Adepta Sororita" desecrated a holy relic. Would you tolerate it if the tomb of Christ was being used as a midden?

Reasonable response? The loss of one or two STCs would be bad enough, but HUNDREDS? This is a gross insult of such severity that it could spark off a civil war!

The Calixian tech-priests could respond to this in two ways - the mainstream response is to punish the Adepta Sororitas of the Calixian Sector institutionally by refusing to supply them with equipment and exerting their influence over civilian manufacturers to effectively boycott all sales to the Battle Sisters. A particularly outraged faction of Calixian tech-priests could begin machinating a punitive terror campaign against the Sororitas, bombing priories across the Sector - which dangerously escalates when a sabotaged Blackship unleashes a psyker hell which is only narrowly contained.

Your Acolytes are thus drawn into a sector-spanning campaign - they have to rush from Fenksworld to Calth and back again, trying to dampen down the spreading fires before they burst into open conflagrations by entreaty, persuasion, mind-control or assassination, and in the meantime defeat Logicians and other heretical cults who are looking to aggravate the tension for their own ends.

The ultimate goal of the Cult Mechanicus is to understand the Omnissiah. The communal and personal attempt at this is known as the Quest for Knowledge. The Cult believes that all knowledge already exists, and it is primarily a matter of time before it can be gathered together to complete the Quest. It is therefore disinclined to perform much original research. Some original research does happen, but its results are quarantined and tested for very long periods before being put to further use.

Disciples of the Cult Mechanicus strive to achieve a kind of enlightenment through their studies and biological/mechanical symbiosis. This is known as the Quest for Knowledge. The Quest for Knowledge is encapsulated within tenets of the Cult, which dictate the goals and behaviour of every Techpriest. The most important tenets are known as The Sixteen Universal Laws. These laws are divided into two categories, “The Mysteries” and “The Warnings”.

Op, I’d like you to imagine what would happen if you were to find the True Cross. not a fragment, the actual cross that Jesus Christ was nailed to. Hell, why don’t we say you also found the genuine Holy Grail and the Spear of Longinus. Now imagine that the Pope knows that you found them. And not just the present one – imagine we’re dealing with a fiery tempered medieval pope with a penchant for relics, one whose word is considered law across huge swathes of Europe.

Now imagine that he not only knows that you found all three of these relics, but didn’t hand them over to him. And that instead of handing over, you decided to burn them all. But before burning them, you decided to take a long, slow dump on each of them. And he has written proof (proof that YOU YOURSELF have written) that you have done these things. What do you think his repsonse would be? He might be just a tad upset, no?

The kind of response the pope would have would be roughly equivalent to the response the Mechanicum would have if the acolytes had burned ONE STC system. Fortunes for entire dynasties of dissolute nobles have come from the discovery of just one functioning STC. The Mechanicum have been known to divert entire crusades on the merest hint of a single broken STC.

They’re dead man. The Mechanicum are going to hunt them down like dogs and kill them. And once they’ve killed them in the most excruciating ways possible, they’ll revive them, bring them back to full health and kill them again. They’ll relax the ban on inventing new things just to create devices to torture them. They’ll do things to them that would make a Haemonculus sick. They’ll do things to them that would make the Chaos Gods go “oh steady on, that’s a bit much.”

Happy bunnies they will not be.

A Standard Template Construct (STC) is an instructional blueprint (often including its own instant construction factory) that was originally designed back in the Dark Age of Tech to provide colony worlds with basic designs for the various highly important and practical technologies that colonial humanity relied upon.

After the end of the Dark Age of Tech, when most of the means to create good technology was lost, the remaining STCs became the Mechanicum's only source for nonheretical "new" technology--as it had already been designed and used, and is not sentient, the Techpriests assume it is utterly free of corruption, not to mention full of awesome lost tech, and doubtlessly very effective.

Undiscovered STC blueprints are incredibly rare, as most were lost in the chaos following the Dark Age, and as such, are considered holy relics by the Priests of Mars. Most of the items used by the Imperium's armies (including the Leman Russ Main Battle Tank, whose STC blueprints originally detailed a type of farming tractor) can be traced to one of the dozens of STC discoveries that have happened over the past 10,000 years. Each STC has the potential to contain lost tech of incredible importance--such as how to make plasma rifles that work right, how to make gravity plating again, how hover-tech works, how to make superior powered armor, even simple things like improved Soylens Viridians processors, or how to build a better Ratling trap.

Most STC sites reveal only one or two blueprints. The loss of hundreds of STCs is almost grounds for Exterminatus of the defiler's home planet. Mars will be pissed.

And no, they can't just reverse-engineer it. They don't even know what the damn things looked like because the Sororitas blew the blueprints up. Besides, reverse-engineering lost tech without having any blueprints to work with skirts the edge of Heresy.

No, they don't - Titans were an original creation of the Mechanicum during the Age of Strife, while STCs contain pre-Strife technology only.

The Dark Age of Technology did have giant robots analogous to Titans - one of them is the subject of a Grey Knights novel - but the classic Imperator, Warlord, Reaver, and Warhound classes are all original.

You don't nescessarily have to kill them right away, but you have basically burned your bridges with every Techpriest who knows. The party will be enemies of the Mechanicum on top of everything else. If they don't get labelled Traitoris Extremis right away (and believe me, the Mechanicus will go that far and further) then they will take matters into their own hands and hunt them themselves. And the Inquisition relies to heavily upon the Mechanicum to really do anything about it - really, almost all Inquisitors will just wash their hands of the matter rather than risk getting involved themselves.

They might possibly be able to get help from Techpriests who don't know who they are yet, but as soon they do they will be Public Enemy number 1. It might make things interesting and challenging, but it'll be a pain in the neck trying to get anything done.

Ok, guys, gotta clear something up.

An STC isn't a factory, it's a blueprint. A fully functional STC would be a computer with the blueprints for all the technology that was current when it was set up.

Given that the STCs were made in the Dark Age of Technology, that's much higher tech than is available in M41. If a fully functioning STC was ever found, the AdMech would be able to jump a couple tech-levels and get decidedly Culture. Of course, this will never happen, as it would advance the plot.

What's generally referred to as an STC (Standard Template Construct) is a blueprint for one or two things. A knife, for instance, or a tank. But keep in mind: Dark Age technology. So, much better than anything that can be made without an STC.

So, an STC isn't just a priceless relic, it's instructions for manufacturing a limitless supply of priceless relics.

This could be done nicely in-game as the Acolytes are all being strapped to some torture device while the Admech version of Revolver Ocelot watches gleefully, and then a messenger techpriest comes in saying something like "They misinterpreted the nature of the device! It wasn't the STC's themselves they destroyed, just a map to them." Points at the acolytes: "Release them." The Ocelot techpriest looks disappointed. Messenger points at Sororita: "Not her."

Prior to this you need to make them properly understand what incredibly deep shit they are in, so that they all can breathe a huge sigh of relief when this scene happens.

Every last one of those STCs were STCs for blasphemous machine intelligences, Iron Men, quantum supercomputers, sub-sapient PDA devices, etc. There was a high-ranking Magos who knew exactly what they were and where they were and was just waiting for an excuse to go grab them so that he could secretly experiment with them and perform tech-heresies of the worst kind.

The party is declared excommunicate traitoris and they must survive. They are contacted by a techpriest who is working for their inquisitor (or another one if he's not Ordo Hereticus) as a sleeper agent underneath the heretical magos. They need to sneak into the area where the printouts and dataslates that could implicate the heretical Magos and sneak or fight their way out. They eventually come across the Magos himself and some ancient salvaged Iron Men with gauss flayers (reverse engineered millennia ago from an improperly entombed Necron army) and when they come out on top and arrest or kill him they are arrested themselves by ad-mech who then find the proof of the magos' tech-heresy. They are then awarded an apology by the AdMech and re-instituted into their Inquisitor's service. He sends them a message via astropath amounting to JUST AS PLANNED LOLOL I WAS SPY(ing on the magos) ALL ALONG and the name of a man who can get them some good stuff for cheap as well as a bonus for each acolyte.

The AdMech will write a letter of disapproval. On the planetary crust of every planet the bolterbitch's order has chapterhouses on.
Then the Inuiqsition for that sector can't get dick from the AdMech for the next tenthousand years.
Then the Inquisition will hunt down every last surviving member or relative of a member of her order. The lucky ones will be allowed to be simply servitors working in sewage treatment plants, while still being able to feel.

However, if her actions revealed it to not be a collection of STCs, but instead somewhat readable directions to an STC (that they can still decipher somewhat), the AdMech would decide to kill her and force the rest of you to take them to the device, where they would probably send you on a suicide mission to find it, or become servitors and help anyway.

You'd better hope you were wrong about it being an actual STC, because everyone associated with this catastrophe is fucking DEAD. Your Inquisitor unless it's Lord Inquisitor whatshisname is dead for recruiting idiots.

You think the AdMech will stop at sanctions and excommunication of the Ordos Calixis, whatever Order the SoB belongs to, and probably the entire sector in general? Fuck that, they have their own killers. Disguised Luminen, Secutors, sniper-Servitors, every covert Mechanicus force from sectors around (not just Calixis) are going to be out for blood. They'll pull just about anything they can: browbeat the Assassinorum into sending operatives, silence the Inquisition with threats of sanctions, cut off supplies to Ecclesiarchial Worlds until they excommunicate your party, and call in old favors from Space Marine chapters and planetary governors. Every waking moment the team will be running from things like Secutor assassins, flocks of tech-cultists, normal citizens who have been informed that their hive is no longer being supplied with heat and power because they haven't turned the party in...

They wouldn't destroy an entire Order of SoBs. Probably her specific Priory, and covertly (with an unfortunate reactor meltdown). The rest of the SoBs of this sector would be put on absolute weapons and armor embargo until the culprit was found, and their teachings examined to prevent this from happening again. Without weapons and armor they can't properly crusade, and without ships (the Ecclesiarchy has ships but without techpriests maintaining them you're not going far) they can barely even travel in-system.

They would however impose extreme sanctions on the Sector Ecclesiarchy unless they turned a blind eye to the deployment of tens of thousands of assassins on a Sororita (& company) who technically belongs to said Ecclesiarchy.

tl;dr The Ecclesiarchy turns a blind eye because they pretty much have to. Same for the Inquisition. Both of those organizations know that a single person or party isn't worth these kinds of confrontations.

The admech can't reverse engineer shit. They don't know HOW anything works, they just know 'push button A, turn screw five times counter clockwise while chanting hymns to the machine god, sacrifice hamster and use its blood as lubricant to appease the machine spirit, remove power cell, replace with fresh cell, repeat process in reverse order, congratulations you've changed the batteries in the commisar's TV remote." They've turned science into a religion and do everything by rote memorization. Actually thinking about what they're doing is forbidden.

That's why they want the STC templates. They were the key to everything in the Golden Age. They show you how to make ANYTHING out of almost ANYTHING. And there's less than a dozen templates in admech hands, or in the known universe. Most were destroyed long ago. Finding an STC template is like finding one of the Emperor's diaries. If you give it back to who it belongs to, you can name your reward. A computer FILLED with templates? The characters could all be system governors. Hell, maybe even high-level administrators in line to become High Lords of Terra. That computer was the GM handing you the keys to massive wealth and power. And the bolter-bitch destroyed it.

AdMech knows how most of their stuff works and conducts research on lost/alien tech. The problem is in their belief in machine spirits. Alien tech has none and is therefore heretical, profane and dangerous, while messing too much with imperial gear might injure their machine spirits, which is I believe a rather bad thing for a techpriest to do. But they do science and modify stuff.

I still don't think that we've quite nailed down just how fucked the party is.
The Adepta Sororitas is fucking gone, there will be no evidence of their passing, no written records. That whole fucking branch of the Ecclesiarchy will die in ways so horrible that Khorne will be sick at the bloodshed. Everyone who ever met a Sister is dead. Every planet the Sororitas operated on is subjected to Exterminatus via Nova Bombs. Every Organization in the Imperium will assist. Anyone who even protests this, let alone sides with the Sisters will suffer the same fate. The bloodshed will be Crusade-level. The AdMech will spare no effort or expense, all that will be left is a whiff of ozone from the Melta fire.
And this will be seen as very reserved.
You didn't find a relic here, you found their fucking faith, and then destroyed it with a gun THAT THEY BUILT FOR YOU.
You didn't destroy their Holy Grail, you destroyed their Jesus.
There is no retcon that can save this campaign. Scrap it, kick the Sororitas Player out of your group, cry in the shower for a little while and then go back to D&D, because you're not allowed to play 40k anymore.

They're going to pattern your brains Machine-Spirit style into ten thousand servitors just so they can torture you ten thousand times, then do it again. Forever. You are so beyond fucked that if you had the powers of the Emperor himself and twenty legions of Custodes are bodyguards you'd STILL be fucked. Suicide by drinking Drano is the best fucking thing you could do for yourself, because if they find your body and you didn't die in horrific pain they're going to resurrect your ass and make sure you get it right this time.
    You are fucked^1000*1000.

You have a massively fucked party, the AdMech would kill all of them, and they would do it ceremonially with extreme prejudice. The entire party should now make a nothing but a tech-priest party and go BACK to the ruins to examine it in full for as long as it takes to completely dismantle the ruins looking for anything of interest, to the AdMech. This excursion would require a Magos Prime leading it with at least 2 other magos assisting him in his endeavor. they would require a Skittari Consul to lead the militaris witch would be anywhere around 500 Hypaspist to secure the planet with at LEAST 2000 menials of the AdMech searching. You can expect the entire planet to be occupied in the name of the Omnissiah with a very real possibility of it's inhabitants being enslaved by the AdMech so as to assist them. The Origonal party (long dead at this point) would then most likely have the worst fate known to the AdMech inflicted on them. Their names would be completely expunged from all records along with anything they have done for the Imperium. You can even expect their friends and anyone to have worked with them to be brutally questioned by the Inquisition with suspicion of DOUBLE heresy!

and by the name of Omnissiah THEY FUCKING DESERVED IT! LET ME AT THOSE BASTARDS!!!

got to tables 7-11 throught 7-26 in the dark heresy rule book and roll on each table with a +20 modifier on the rolls. Now inflict the results on the Adepta Sororita all at once. Now do it to everyone she has ever touched. this would be an act of mercy.

The loss of several hundred STC patterns along with human built thinking machines (Not all that bad in the eyes of the AdMech, as long as they have them) is likely to result in a war of insane proportions.

Fuck the PC's (they mean nothing), it is highly likely that the AdMech would go to all out war with the Inquisition in the sector, confident that the conclave is attacking them directly. Eventually calmer heads on both sides would ease the situation and it'd all be resolved, but not without alot of grimdark.
    >> Anonymous 01/30/09(Fri)00:57 No.3560563
Several hundred STC patterns? The destruction of such an unceprecedented cache of Archaeotech would result in a war.

You don't just destroy that many STCs! The sensible thing to do would have been to kill the zealot that torched them, and then reported that apart from a few heretical machines nothing was found. And try not to dwell on the giant loss for the Imperium.

I'll just chip in and mention that I now officially hate the adeptus sororita's, and THAT ONE in PARTICULAR.

Give her to me, bound. I shall make sure that she realises what she has done. FOR ETERNITY.
I will put her in a plastic bag, with breathing holes.
I will then hook her up with just the bare essential nutrients that she needs to surive, including drugs to keep her concious.

I will then dip the bag in cement, while making sure that she still gets the air, nutrients and drugs she needs to be alive and concious.

I will then display her cemented form in the halls of my forge. Every day I shall find new ways to torture her rigid and helpless form. I shall chip away at the cement, and burn her toes. I'll flay the skin and muscles from her hands and pour salt on the bare flesh beneath....

Wtf were you planning to do if they hadn't destroyed the STCs? You realize that the game would be over at that point? I'm not talking about your game, I'm saying that if you let them recover several hundred STCs you would have broke the entire campaign. Unless you were completely done with the game and wanted your players to never, ever come back or talk to you again, then there is no way any of this should have ever happened. EVER.

Nothing happened at all. What is this Calixis sector you speak of? There? Why thats jus dead planets and empty space. Nothing and no one was ever there at anytime pas future or present.

I think thats how they would re act. Every single planet, ship, orbital dockyard, asteriod, and what ever the fuck else is in space would be completely destroyed. The planets would be purged of all life and then cracked open. The chunks would then be atomized.

Guys, I think we're being a little EXTREME here. I mean, surely the AdMech are reasonable guys! Your party will just go up to the Magos or whatever, and be like "Sup, we were up in ur catacombs burnin' ur techz."

I'm sure everything will be fine.
