    34 KB Anonymous 03/13/09(Fri)09:06 No.3962175
Princi IV had been a beautiful world before they came, a jewel of culture and trade nestled in the outer regions of Imperial space. In one night illuminated by flashes of green and filled with a cacophony of fearful screams all life was scoured from the world, and when the sun rose there was nothing but rubble and the remains of those unlucky enough to have not died instantly. In time all that would be gone as well, and the sky became filled swarms of small insect-like robots that began their new duties at the behest of their master, whilst larger constructs either patrolled or assisted their smaller cohorts with the greater materials.

Its directives met and the Necron force set to their tasks for the next few centuries, the Lord strode through the wreckage of what had once been a great refuge of the nobility, a park that sat at the top of a tower tended to by servitors and serfs or to impress passing merchants or Imperial dignitaries. The tower had been cast down and ruined like all the works of the young race, and the Necron Lord picked its way through the rubble with gauss energy flashing from cold fingers as it snuffed out any trace of the greenery that struggled to keep alive despite the calamity that had occurred. In the dim spark of its soul the Necron Lord felt the barest whisper of satisfaction, and resolved to pursue the idle task to its completion.

The Necron Lord tore through a small hatch with a contemptuous strike from its staff, and found a chamber that had somehow survived the fall, a great circular room full of a variety of rare flowers of the world that bloomed in bright and beautiful colours. Though it could have factored in many explanations for this occurrence the Necron Lord did not care, but though its initially processed decision was to purge the entire room, its attention was instead attracted to a blood trail that ran from its feet to a pillar in the centre of the chamber.
    >> Anonymous 03/13/09(Fri)09:06 No.3962178
As it approached, the Lord found the trail ending at the slumped form of one of the young race, all breath gone from the frail female body that had apparently chosen to pass on in as peaceful a setting as it could manage. Nothing stirred in the Necron Lord as he looked upon what had been a beautiful specimen. Her death had been necessary. She was just like the flowers in the room. She had to die.

    She had to die.

The words rang even more hollow every time the Necron repeated the directive. The dim soul stirring once again as though remembering something, someone who had once been important to it. The young creature meant nothing, but the way the rising sun cast its light on her from a hole in the chamber roof cast the scene in new meaning. That dim memory of someone who had once been the world to the Lord. Who was she?

It could not answer the questions. It had been far too long and she had been dead from the moment it had become what it was. But who was she? There was only a query unanswered. It had been deemed unimportant.

But something stirred nonetheless, the shadow of a memory that seemed to defy the Lord's own nature. Gentle chimes that rang in a sad, wind-blown melody that was all the Necrontyr had known as music when they lived and died under a withering sun. It reached down to the corpse of the young female, and dragged her up into its arms in an awkward embrace. Had she been so heavy when held in his arms? What was it that they did when it held her so? What were those hushed words about being together forever? All scrambled. All lost.
    >> Anonymous 03/13/09(Fri)09:07 No.3962181
There in the memory of the ringing chimes, in the futile search for identity amongst the ashes of love it was no longer capable of comprehending, the Necron Lord began a slow waltz. The corpse was unimportant, the memory was forever out of reach... but yet there in it all as the sun passed over time and time again the Necron Lord found something that felt like peace.

    The chimes looped. Time passed.

New information interrupted the idle activity of the Lord. The chimes were forgotten, the dance was ended. The corpse was nothing more than crushed and broken bones scattered about the room where they had rotted off to be bleached in the passing light. Without water or nutrients to feed them the flowers had long died off, their colours fading as they drooped then rotted.

The Necron Lord left that place, and never again did it return to the chamber.

Glad you guys liked it. It was running around in my head all day. A far cry from the usual herpaderp Kharn and etc shenanigans I usually write.

Honestly I teared up a little when I was writing it, picturing the Necron lord with the dead human in its arms as she wasted further away over time, the Necron Lord dancing to a tune only it could hear, which was unto itself the sad chiming of a people who lived short, sad lives trying desperately to escape a horrible existence under a dying sun.

    >Its directives met and the Necron force

Replace the 'and' with a comma. It sounds better.

    >Its directives met, the necron force
    or
    >Their directives met,

The "Its" refers to the Necron Lord, not the Necron force. I should probably change it to be clearer.

Actually, on second glance, I quite like the vagueness, though there is probably a better way of phrasing it. If you could have it so it refers to primarily 'lord', but secondarily 'the necron force', it'd convey nicely the single focus and lack of individuality necrons enjoy.

Still, change 'and' with the comma regardless.

It was that part at the end that really struck me, the fact that the lord was waltzing there for years before new directives had moved him back to his duties.

Will do. Thanks for the help. I usually fire and forget this stuff but this one just hangs there in my heart. I think it came from all the Necron talk I've been involved in lately, about the Necron Lords and how some are 'broken', and I asked myself "In what ways can something that once thought and felt be broken?"

It's kind of like the old Thousand Sons Marine thing we used to throw around here, only it's more sad for us than it is for the Necron Lord who had what could be considered a decade (possibly century) spanning hiccup in its processes.

I'm Khârn-Writer, mostly because I write Khârn related stories (originally on /b/, but came here when /tg/ kicked into gear). You know, the heck of a guy crud. I've written a lot of other stuff, most recently a few Idranel stories, the "Crank on the Ork Gun" story. I did that Father's Day thing with the guardsman thinking about his father, and how he'll never see him again.

And also Lofn being flushed down a Craftworld toilet.

I write a lot, but it's always short, and usually silly.

There's a lot of stuff I've written for /tg/ that isn't on there, or other archive places (heck, I don't think you'll find my name anywhere on those places). I like to slip stuff into threads when people aren't looking and see if they notice.

But this story is most definitely something I'll jump around waving my arms about to own up for. Not simply because it won't get me lynch-mobbed, but because it gets me right there, in that spot where I used to have a heart.

Can I have the "Crank on the Ork Gun" story? Never read it, though I've read most of your Kharn tales.
