"While I understand your hesitation Secretary, I know the foregone conclusion to our discussion. A great deal of moral showboating, podium waving, perhaps a few quotes from the Rubaiyyat, but I will win this argument. Because you know your history. You know the Caliphate did not arise from gentle means, did not thrive out of kindness, and did not become the world's only superpower by dint of its moral superiority."

"The Almoravid Republic is steeped in blood, and will continue to wet its hands for the forseeable future- for so go we, so goes the rest of the world."

"So, yes, I will continue to fund adventurers from Islamic Aztlan to journey to the lawless areas of the American confederation, I will continue to monitor and sabotage the Turkish Liberation Movement, and you can be definitely sure that those feminist movements out of Malaysia WILL be quelled, and we WILL look the other way."

"The godless Soviet alternative would be far worse."

    CITIZENS OF BAGHDAD

Do YOU wish to continue to play party to MURDER? Do YOU hold love for TYRANNY? Are you IMPERIALISTS?

No! is the answer of any true blooded son of Abd-er-Rahman! But yet, why then do you follow your CORRUPT rulers that would continue the worst traditions and predations of Fascist Germany?

You have been DECEIVED by your rulers! Your shameful period of colonization is FAR from over, the lands you believed you liberated from your rule ARE JUST THE OPPOSITE! Right now, the madman Allendo Wezerifa controls Brazil with an IRON FIST, massacring WOMEN and CHILDREN to maintain power! Why does not your government act, and instead, give MONEY and WEAPONS? Because your nation has been perverted!

DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE SILENT IN THE FACE OF VILLAINY

VOTE FOR THE PEOPLE'S PARTY IN YOUR UPCOMING ELECTION!

That we are a fortunate people is not something to be doubted- the vast oil reserves under our control allows us to set terms to the world if they wish to keep going, our close relations with the nations of South America and our religious ties grants us access to vast wealth and natural resources- why, for the latter half of the nineteenth century and a further five years, we held a monopoly on the production of rubber. And our actions in the Second World War saw us with bases scattered across Europe, allowing us access to European knowledge, and more concretely, far more power projection. Across the world, Arabic is becoming a second language in bowing to our influence- Allah truly saw fit to bless us.

However, as my colleague Ubaid Tahir has so pithily stated, "Allah's only blessed us halfway- we must secure the other half."

The first world war saw an entire generation of people gone and dead, and famously our Prime Minister after the revolutions vowed "No more entangling foreign deals," in a shrunken nation. Now, I fear that we have returned to the web of treaties and contracts, and find ourselves locked in a stalemate with our nemesis borne of that same war, the Soviet Union.

It is only natural for them to be our enemy- they skirmished with the caliphate for control of Causcasus in our distant past, and they are the only ones that can be independent of our oil reserves. Their insidious ideology poisons the hearts and minds of our younger, and encourages them to rebel against authority and to engage in lascivious acts.

More importantly though, we find ourselves outmatched in the business world- multigenerational corporations have supplanted native businesses across the country, especially those of the Empire of Japan via our satellite states in Aztlan, and we find our own corporations ill suited to compete in a world of global trade.

I declare that this ends now.

The methodology and actions of the Al-Andalus Reconnaissance and Cartography Section (I'm sure that it sounds better in Arabic) can not hope to match that of our KGB as far as discretion and subtlety go, but what they lack in an even hand, they more than make up for with force, arrogance, and confidence which, if not handled with care, can upset a more cautious plan.

They are almost feudal, a throwback to a day when Berbers would set it upon themselves to mete out justice or revenge upon the long and level sands of the Sahara- groups of men banded together more out of dedication and bloodlust than for any technical skill they may bring. If the Cartographers feel particularly subtle, they will hire freelancers for a job, which in this world, there are a plethora of. The freelancers are naturally treated with xenophobic micromanagement and surveillance of course.

And equally as foregone of a conclusion is that this disturbs both foreign relations and the relations of those with in the bounds of their empire. The legendary ethnic tensions and nationalistic movements of their tribal people are not helped by the bands of swaggering foreigners that arrive on the scene intent upon enforcing mysterious dictums from on high- the refugee Jewish state of Israel (Already a headache for the Andalusian Senate) has in fact threatened secession and military action twice now from the actions of these adventurers.

General, you despair of my men not having found success in infiltrating this mysterious organization to sabotage them. I on the other hand General only despair of not having the luxury of seeing what an intelligence service's collapse from the inside looks like.

The Desert Lion is falling! He and the Great Bear fought for the body of the Black Eagle, to see who might sup most on his fallen body! The Desert Lion drank most of the poisoned blood, and not suffers for it!

The time of the Great Bear is nigh! He has spoken to me in my dreams, he commands me to abandon Allah, to turn my back on His blessings! But I shall not! For I am the Fourth Prophet, last and greatest, a son of Allah himself!

See now! The horizon burns, the Desert Lion's claws pulled from the far American shores! The Rising Sun burns away the Lion's paws with a smile on its face and jagged trinkets in its hands! This is our end! Soon, I shall open the great door, and we shall rise into heaven! Drink, drink deep of the goblets before you, o'erflowing with the purple waters of life! Drink, and be reborn!

-The final speech of Nadhir Nabheel, found in his compound along with thirty members of his cult, all died of poison.

So, is this ALT HIST. where the Islam kept Spain and Portugal (note the claim of religious ties to Latin America, and where a Caliphate state dealt with Europe as an equal in the interim, and now faces the lawlessness of a failed North American state (presumably the result of a United States that has to deal, or has failed to deal, with heavy Moslem immigration from Latin America, and the conflict caused by religious differences and the attitude of these moslems towards the more fortunate native born infidels)?

    Sounds interesting.

It's called a setting you stupid ass.

Also I really like it. So I guess the desert lion is the caliphate, and the black eagle is Nazi Germany. Presumably, the caliphate had a big role in defeating Nazi Germany.

Of course, one thing that always bothers me about alt. history is that once you change one thing (Muslims retain control of Spain, Islamic empire does not fall), everything else necessarily changes. Would Hitler have even been born in such a timeline? No. But, of course, it isn't right to treat alternative history so literally. Better to think of it as an entirely new setting that merely takes inspiration from history, picking and choosing which bits it likes, rather than trying to actually construct an accurate "what if" picture.

"Most of the German designs that we have gleaned are designed for European settings- relatively even fields, roads, not particularly (At least by comparison to the Soviet designs) rugged or long lasting. It would take our scientists years, years that we may not have, to come up with tanks suitable to our long borders, and this is assuming a Cartography team steals one of the T-72's designs to cobble off of."

"I assume you have a suggestion, General Khayyam?"

"Yes. I do not vouch suspending the tank project- just that our military focus should be directed more to personal firepower. Keep our current designs- they'll not win a pitched battle, but removing them would starve our weapons contractors and be a propaganda coup for the Soviets."

"So we keep these paper tigers on our door steps to be mocked-"

"-And devote our efforts to personnel level anti tank weaponry. We have mountains, deserts, sea walls, swamps, tanks would be counter productive."

"We need force projection. The Lousiana situation, the French are pressing us to intervene-"

"We already have military advisors there. Leave it at that."

In fact, I could see how you could pull off Islam Spain + nazi Germany, but it wouldn't work in the setting being presented here, since I assume, as it hasn't mentioned them, England, France, and USA either no longer exist or never did. If the Moors managed to conquer Spain but then never conquer France, and the Turks don't get Eastern Europe, WWI can still happen, and from there, its a pretty definite course.

Where were you when Morocco gave the vote to women?

I realize that this question has been posed to you about a situation that you may think is greater, the news of the Azore launch, but I tell you now that this is far more important and terrifying than a group of men paid to speak on behalf of Jews and Germans in silly coats claiming they set a sphere of tin to spin about the Earth. Where were you when Morocco gave the vote to women?

Alright, alright, that is enough class. It was recent. I had hoped more of you would remember that. Now, for those of you that CAN remember, remember that day. Remember it for the rest of your life. You will know it as the day the Almoravid Republic began to fail.

It was not by a very great majority that it was brought in, but it was with a majority nonetheless, and all of a sudden wives and daughters and mothers were suddenly invested with the right to speak, to put forth their support for policy, to weigh in on matters that did not concern them.

Such a radical change has not occurred in this country since the revolution itself. Now, for those of you who could not bring yourself to think of such important things, I will put it up on the board. Repeat after me: Shawwal the sixth, thirteen ninety five. This is a day that will live in infamy.

...I realize that there are few of you who have... Respect for the faith. There are fewer and fewer these days. National television stations have replaced radio, and with it, a pollution of the mind and soul. But, there are many who care for the faith. Who will act. I know of them- I am not saying I am one of them!

    But I know of them.

Sounds like America never unified. Not sure how that impacts Japan. On the one hand, no Black Ships traumatizing them into military exansion. On the other hand, if they do go expansionist there's no Pacific counterweight. The Caliphate may extend as far as India, but that's it.

What about China? With a Caliphate presence in Europe, the Western powers might be less likely to beat them up for milk money in the 19th century.

And good stuff. Non-Western/Weaboo settings need more exploration.

Without the maritime competition of Spain (or maybe with the maritime competition of an islamic Spain), I see no reason why England shouldn't develop the same naval power it did in the real world, and they were the biggest bullies as far as China is concerned.

And if Spain/Portugal develop navally, but under the crescent moon, and not the cross, Japan probably deals with them like they did the Portugese, until someone kicks them open. The Black ships might still happen, if we presume that the United States falls under the pressure of Moslem immigrants, because that may happen after the Perry expedition. And if it fell sooner, or never rose so high, perhaps it was some other force that filled that role.

I could see myself playing this, descendant of Europeans fleeing the expansion of Moslem influence living and fighting in the contested ground of North America, it could be pretty awesome.
