ITT good obscure RPG's, either released or upcoming

Pictured is Lesser Shades of Evil. The tl;dr of the game is that the PC's are immortal AI's in a world where most science is forgotten and the aftermath of a "spirit war" between the AI's like them who commanded them has dealt a lot of damage to the world. Very cool fluff and setting, slightly clunky but weird and interesting system.

    Long version-

a game about a future where humanity as we know it has been wiped out and reborn through the will of one family, the Kingsways. By uploading themselves into immortal machine shells, and possessing many bodies, both vat grown and stolen, they brought the world of corporations and nations to an end, resculpting the world to remove all trace of the First Age, and then recreated humans, acting as living gods to reward the just and punish the wicked.

As the population spread, more and more people were needing the guidance, and the seven members of the family were overstretched. So, they chose virtuous mortals, and brought them to their hidden towers and uploaded their minds, just as the family had done to themselves all those years ago.

The world was peaceful, for a time, and then there was a war. One of the seven went mad, and another betrayed them all, and there was much destruction and chaos. In the end, all the AI's, known as Angelions, were told the truth, and were freed. These are the PC's. Powerful, knowledgeable and influential, but hunted, hounded and, in one very specific respect, vulnerable- if someone finds your essence, the golden sphere which holds the machinery which sustains your consciousness, they can destroy it, and you will die.

The system is weird, but cool. You have a dice pool, depending on your proficiency level, and to succeed on a task one of your dice needs to exceed the goal number. However, depending on your proficiency, you have a variable number of either D6's, D10's or D20's. Taking a lot of D6's, you're virtually guaranteed to succeed at ordinary tasks, but its impossible to succeed on higher levels of task. Taking D20's, you can succeed on very high goal numbers, but you can also much more easily fail lower ones.

Another one I've heard about, which looks good- Eclipse Phase.

Transhuman future, with lots of cool fluff about AI's and panhuman races, where the PC's are people who deal with "Existential Risks"- problems so great they could cause the extinction of the whole species.

The website, if anyone's interested- http://eclipsephase.com/

    The Riddle of Steel.
Game is out of print, but if you can find copies of the books, I highly recommend picking them up. One of the best advancement and melee combat systems I've ever seen in an RPG.

    Don't Rest Your Head

The premise of the game is this: you are an insomniac. And not just a normal insomniac any more - one of the Awake. You can see the secret entrances into the Mad City, the extra rooms and doors and whole buildings that you couldn't see before. And now that you can see it, the Nightmares that live in the Mad City can see you too. Staying awake means confronting the insanity. Going to sleep is suicide.

Fuck Yeah, Don't Rest Your Head! Fucking awesome game.

Also, has one of the best sourcebooks ever- Don't Lose Your Mind is so fucking awesome. Even if you don't use the powers, it really makes the Madness mechanic feel, well, insane...

We had someone who could say "No" and stop things. Anything. It was awesome. They ended up going nightmare, and exploded because the universe kept existing when they said No to it.

    Engel:

A biblical fantasy RPG, set in the 27th century after the Biblical End Times has fallen over the land. The PCs are either "engels" or their human allies -- where engels are essential angels created to battle insectile demons known as the Dreamseed. The original German edition uses a system (the "Arcana" system) using tarot cards, with an emphasis on storytelling.

Don't get the English version, it uses D&D mechanics.

Orpheus is a role playing game by White Wolf Game Studio, set in a microcosm of the World of Darkness. Unlike the other World of Darkness game lines, Orpheus has a specifically planned metaplot and a set number of books that were published. Although it uses the same system as White Wolf's other games, ghosts and spirits are the exclusive focus of this story. Other supernatural creatures in the World of Darkness are strongly discouraged from entering the events of Orpheus. It is, however, tied with Wraith: The Oblivion, White Wolf's previous game dealing with the afterlife; some of the events in Orpheus are related to Ends of Empire, the final book in the Wraith: The Oblivion line.

Characters in Orpheus are either living individuals capable of astral projection (via meditation or cryonics) or are ghosts of the recently deceased. It is assumed that characters work for the Orpheus Group, a company that employs the talents of projectors and spirits to investigate and clear ghostly activity and perform other tasks difficult for those without access to the world of the dead. The way a person manifests as a ghost is called the Lament; two Laments are projection-based, while two are based on a person being dead.

    >>4381328
    * Skimmers use drugs and meditative techniques to temporarily eject their souls from their bodies. While they can enter and exit the spirit world quickly, their close connection to their empty shells means damage they take as a ghost manifests on their bodies.
    * Sleepers are cryonically frozen; once the body reaches a certain temperature, it is "dead" and ejects the spirit. While in stasis, the body is treated with special drugs to keep necrosis from setting in. While it keeps sleepers from the close connections skimmers have that allows them to be injured, the process means that both entering and leaving the world of ghosts is a slow process.
    * Spirits are your run-of-the-mill dead person, souls who have unfinished business that allow them to remain on earth. Most who work for Orpheus have a high-degree of independence because of a remarkable willpower they held in life that transitions to death; not all spirits, however, are able to keep their independent attitudes when they die and become doomed to repeat themselves endlessly.
    * Hues are spirits with one major difference; while alive, they took the designer drug pigment. Pigment keeps a spirit from feeling ultimately fulfilled, so while a hue may be as stubborn as a spirit, they have more fragile forms and are closer to their dark sides.

Each character has a set of special traits, called a Shade, which determine how they manifest and what ghostly powers (or Horrors) they are able to use and which ones they cannot. There are eight Shades total; the first five were introduced in the Orpheus corebook, while the remaining three were introduced in three of the supplements.

    * Banshees are the empathetic shades, full of compassion. They manifest their abilities of emotional manipulation, physical damage, and looking into the future through their voices.
    * Haunters are those who care for things over people. This focus allows them to manipulate inanimate objects and machines to a disturbing degree.
    * Poltergeists are usually full of rage, either quiet or overt. This allows them to pick up objects without touching them directly, and also to alter their own forms in violent ways.
    * Skinriders are control-freaks. They are granted the ability to possess the bodies of others and bend them to their will.
    * Wisps are the trickster shade. They have abilities that allow them to draw attention, escape in a flash, or manipulate ghostly items.
    * Phantasms, introduced in Shades of Gray, are the artists and dreamers. They can see and manipulate the dreams of the living.
    * Orphan-Grinders, introduced in The Orphan-Grinders, are ghosts who gave in to their dark sides, and then came back. They can use the abilities of the dark ghosts, or Spectres.
    * Marrow, introduced in End Game, can adapt to any situation. Appropriately, they are shapeshifters and also have a rapport with animals.

Orpheus is the name of the company your characters work for. You receive missions, typically weird stuff the government can't quite figure out, or private contracts for people who want to utilize "alternative means" for their own purposes.

For example, the mission might be... A high ranking CEO knows he is being targeted for espionage, but he can't show weakness by upping official security. HE comes to your controller, and asks for a "special" security detail. Depending on your type, you have to figure out how to approach the issue. Are you a Skimmer? If so, you can stake out teh place in your van, and when you see something sketchy, put back the seat, lay back, enter your trance, emerge in ghost mode, walk through walls, stand in the room while people are talking though they can't see you, take mental notes, and then report back.

Of course.... you might see another ghost-agent from another company... and then there is the chasing, and the running, and the going back to your body to find the guy, if he doesn't have other team members on the look out for you.....

Oh, and then there are the baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad ghosts.
    >> Anonymous 04/24/09(Fri)10:25 No.4381466
So, you get your heiress spinster who thinks her young lover is stepping out on her. You are a Sleeper, which means you can only project from your tank at Orpheus headquarters (if you haven't somehow stolen and replicated the technology at home, that is). She wants you to tail him, and if he is, put the fear of god into him.

You're a poltergeist, which lets you manipulate the real world from the ghost side.... so when he drops his pants, you trip him. Throw around some tv's, break some windows, fling knives and such about. You're having a blast until a fucking Jason comes through the door, attracted to your ghostly presence.

For the uninitiated... a Jason is an unstoppable engine of destruction, known for terrorizing teenagers at lake-side summer camps.
    >> Anonymous 04/24/09(Fri)10:25 No.4381470
So this..this THING comes through the wall, murders the two people, and then looks right at you. Now, you know you're a ghost, so there shouldn't be any way in hell you can be looked at, but it's staring right into your eyes. It picks up the dead guy by the leg, and hurls him at you. Now, normally, you're a ghost, you don't have flesh, you have gauze, the physical doesn't interact with you... but this body, infused with Jasonness, knocks you twenty feet back, into the wall.

You are on you ass in the next room. Your pod shakes visably back at Orpheus headquarters, and the technician calls his supervisor, because something fucked up is going on in pod #7. You try to get up, but the Jason comes through the wall again, and grabs you by the throat. He slams your confused ghost shell into the wall, again, and again, before he begins to squeeze... and as you feel the lack of life being choked out of you, there is a flash of light.... the techs have defibbed you to bring you back to the world of the living, essentially pulling your spiritual ripcord, forcing your essence back into your body from miles away. Internal injuries, you're bleeding, blacked eye, missing teeth... and then, when you wake up after surgery, you still won't exactly know what the fuck that thing was, and why it was trying to kill you.
    >> Anonymous 04/24/09(Fri)10:28 No.4381492

"This game is pretty much like that. Except — well, Dewdrop is a little scary."

"In fact, if you drew what Dewdrop really looks like on your Trapper Keeper, they would send you to the principal’s office, then to the school counselor, and then perhaps to a place with a name like Morning Meadows Home for Disturbed and Psychotic Youth."

"Welcome to Monsters and Other Childish Things, a funny, frightening, action-packed roleplaying game about kids and the people who matter to them most — their friends, family and loved ones."

As someone whose really into angelic lore, I found In Nomine to be a little underwhelming. Its angels are too human and mundane. An angel shouldn't just be a different kind of person. Angels are an entire other form of existence, and I didn't get that.

Plus, In Nomine is a little too wrapped up in its own mythology for my tastes. I'd want an angel game which stays a little more true to the source material.

I don't need Angels that are batshit insane mind destroying monsters. Just beings who work on a different level.

I saw an idea posted on /tg/ a few months ago, although it didn't get much notice. It was a homebrew game for angels, where rather than normal stats and skills, they had Virtues. If they had enough virtue to achieve something, they could achieve it. Their physical form or memory and skills are essentially irrelevant- Angels are living extensions of gods will, acting through virtue and in the name of virtue, limited by their means even as they act through them.

Then again, I love indie games with wierd mechanics and abstract stats.

Personally I think this is highly underrated. Everyone ignores it because of the wapanese part but that isn't the game. It is a simple and ultimately very enjoyable system for use with any complexity of world. I wanted to run a hilarious steampunk one off full of adventuring failures forming a band, do it in BESM. I thought "how cool would a board game be with little programs running around a board that represents a computer and killing bad guy viruses", run that shit through BESM. The only reason this game gets shit on is because someone thought everything is better with D20 slapped on it. When in truth NOTHING with D20 on it is worth the paper it is printed on. (not looking for a shitstorm or trolling I just want to yell at you guys sometimes for being so hung up on a shit system)

While Exalted is the top dog of the crunchy action games, its currently being kicked in the face by its philosophical Chinese alternative, Weapons of the Gods. With a very cool system, integrated and flowing mechanics for everything from martial arts to daoist magic and a interesting setting, drawing deeply on chinese lore, I'd heartily recommend it. D20 core- i.e. D&D, is shit, I agree with you.

However, there are good games descended from it. Mutants and Masterminds, Iron Heroes and a couple of other D20 adaptations (the Horizon series spring to mind) serve to cultivate the ruleset into something worthwhile.

I have played two alternate D20 games, D20 modern (which was a blast whenever we weren't staring at the rulebook wondering what the hell went wrong) and Castles and Crusades (which wins the most boring RPG ever award from me, which is amazing because our DM was fucking awesome) so it might have just been looking at the wrong stuff. My point remains that a lot of games get overlooked here and elsewhere and I think we as a board should not just create endless "where is arcane power? threads" but also share stories about crazy alternate games and the fun to be had with them. Personally I am looking forward to Monsters and Other Childish things with all my heart. If anyone has stories or ideas to throw at me my goal is to have read the book and have a game ready for my girlfriend when she gets home after dinner time.

Some more off the top of my head

Over The Edge- Like unknown armies, but better, stranger and scarier

The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchhausen- A classic storytelling game, unique and wonderful

3;16, Carnage among the Stars- Rules light game with big macho space marines chewing their way through legions of alien baddies. Great fun.

Unknown Armies- Well known on /tg/. Still pretty obscure, but fucking awesome. Not as good as Over the Edge, but with some really nice fluff.

Alpha Omega is a cool post apoc sci-fi fantasy thing. Its rules heavy, but has some nice art and some interesting design choices. Its like a less focused version of shadowrun, with more ruins and destroyed shit around.

Marauder 2107, an indie publisher (maelstrom hobby), published a game based in a post apocalyptic world (2107 A.D.). Anime look aside, and what not, the story has a somewhat dark twist starting in the 1990s.

Starts with economic slow down/melt down, throw in wars (both skirmish and full blown two nations slugging it out), Russia conquering Europe, and the U.S. implementing scorched Earth nuclear policy. Takes place in Japan, with the central part of Japan 'relatively' intact. But they have to deal with a genetics experiment gone wrong, producing Breeders, who hate and despise humans, and have varying levels of intelligence, from animal up to human.

I just love the mood of the thing. Rules are /heavy/, but can be disregarded as see fit. I'm really thinking of mixing some of the fluff with

Lovely, lovely system (in short: players success mean they get to narrate what they do instead of the DM); dripping with style.
Can't picture myself playing it in campaign (unless I *do* mix it with Rêve, then I can see it working)

I grabbed all the ORE books after they were mentioned here and started reading Monsters and Other Childish things. The system seems sexy, really, really sexy. Anything I should be aware of though. The reason I am so into this is that my current group won't let go of WW's Aberrant rules. Which if anyone has ever played is fun and just brilliant however highly imbalanced. This is sort of similar and it seems very reasonable and balanced. So I was thinking of using either Godlike or Wild Talents to replace the system we currently use. Again the question is any pitfalls or concerns about the ORE system that I should know about.

System uses traits that are represented by dice (the more powerful the trait, the higher the range on the die). You roll this die in conjunction with one or two others (usually a Lineage die and I think a God die), and the highest number on any of them is the result. Most rolls are contested.

The GM also gets points to spend on "contests" everytime the party takes a rest (which can be encounters or other challenges). So you might be weak after a battle, but if your party chooses to recover, the GM gets more stuff to throw at you. It works out very nicely and keeps a nice ebb and flow to the gameplay.

The game is also very rules-lite, and character creation is literally maybe 10 pages. There are also random tables in the back for the GM to generate quests/goals/locales for the party to compete, and the backstory is that they're sailing through this area with tons of different islands, so it all works out nicely.

The major pitfalls of ORE as a system mostly come down to the constraints of it's core concept. ORE plays a delicate balancing act between rules light and realistic, and that can be difficult at times.

A lot of players dislike the idea that Width, which represents the speed of a task, and determines initiative, also determines base damage for an attack, when height it meant to measure quality. The designers (I believe rightly) argue that location matters more, in terms of "quality of damage" than a small variation in the raw damage figures. Which is all well and good, but problematic when Heavy Armour reduces the Width of an attack, and some of the special moves in Reign rely on Width as a measure of quality.

It might be better to consider Width as "Power" and Height as "Precision". So a powerful action is fast, damaging, and hard to block all of. A precise action is also more difficult to block (since Heavy Armour is basically a block roll that is always rolling tens, so it just happens to be really good at blocking), and is generally performed with more finesse.

Hard Dice create the effects of high precision, but in really imprecise ways. So a precise shot kills someone because it hits them in the head, whereas a Hard Dice shot just blows their guts all over the place, or something equally blunt and messy. It's not precise, it's just really fucking deadly (this part actually comes from the Godlike FAQ regarding Hard Dice and describing the effects).

I also tend to avoid applying difficulties in favour of applying dice penalties if I just want to say "The action is more likely to fail." I use difficulty when there are degrees of success, so "Any match, you hear a noise. A mid range match (4-7) you make out that it's a voice, and a high match (8+) means you actually catch the words."

Protip: Don't actually try to use Kult's rules system, it's pretty hideous.

Run it in Unknown Armies or Nemesis instead. Just swap out the madness rules.

    Spaceship Zero

The players are the crew of Spaceship Zero, a spaceship with an experimental Better Than Light Drive. On their first test they accidentally destroy and restart the universe. In theory everything should be the same, so they set a course to where Earth should be and reduce themselves to Essential Saltes to wait out the billions of years till they get back and Earth should be back to how it was.

    In theory.

In this universe, the Earth has been invaded by the Hydronauts, fishmen from outer space who have come to enslave humanity and transform the Earth into a colony. Enter the heroic PC's to save the day.

Basically it's pulpy radio serial Sci-fi with hefty doses of Lovecraft. The systems' pretty simple: skills based on d100s, characters built around archetypes which give them a skill base and a few special abilities, like a Doctor can bring someone back from the dead with a suitable technobabble explanation ("I'm restarting his heart by applying an electromagnetic charge to his corneal nerve!"), pilots can do crazy-ass flying shit and scientists can invent things on the fly.

The players have Zero dice which they get from doing well in their core skills, which can be used to reroll skill checks, save them from death or to make that "It's a 1 in a million chance!" shot.

Overall, we found it to be great fun. The system's simple, the universe is well fleshed out but has plenty of potential for doing whatever the fuck you want and flying about in space shooting down marauding alien invaders will never get old.

Really, really want to buy this game (should have along with other games from IPR last time I bought from them, but it just disapeared from their catalogue) and try it. Loving what I've read of the system so far. And that convention scenario ("The Gift" ?) is just pure genius, if I dare say so.
Not really won over by the scirpted combat system though.

Any other game (apart from Warhammer, if I remember well) using something similar to lifepaths (the more I think about it, the more I salivate for WoD-style fluff lifepaths) ?
