    83 KB I played Kamina in a one shot GURPSfag 04/27/09(Mon)08:14 No.4411636
So, /tg/, remember when the Martial Power book came out? The Bravura warlord was basically equated to be Kamina.

Well, I run an RPG club at my local college. We end up getting together every two weeks or so to run some one-shot games for everyone to enjoy. Anyone who comes by, we'll help them make characters and explain the system, then play.

First game of the night was an All Flesh Must Be Eaten game that took place on black friday.

But this story isn't about that game. This is about the game that came afterwards. A D&D fourth edition game. We were all to make 6th level characters.

After some deliberation, I remembered that this was a one shot game, and the characters I was thinking about playing were both more serious character concepts that I wanted to save for another time. So, I decided I would make a Human Bravura Warlord named Kamina.

This decision was brought on by the DM's revelation that all of our characters had died an untimely death. He also wanted us to think of our character's greatest sin. Obviously, it was supposed to be a somewhat grim game. I was busy helping a new player make his character (An elf ranger with stealth based abilities). Since I was so busy, I decided “fuck it, it’s a one shot. I’ll just play a funny character and we’ll all have a good time watching my positive attitude get stomped on.
    >> GURPSfag 04/27/09(Mon)08:16 No.4411644
So, backstory time comes around. The DM wants to know how our characters died as well as some backstory. I used the plot from Gurren Lagaan, fantasy-ing it up with the beastmen, but not leaving out the great “War Machines” the humans and beastmen used. How did he die? Well, this is the fantasy version of Kamina, I say to myself, I’ll just tell the DM he died in battle. Greatest sin? Well shit. Besides maybe Ghandi I can’t think of anyone more sin-free than Kamina. Hmm, and I have six episodes to go off of. “Oh,” I said suddenly, breaking the minute long silence between myself and the DM off in another room. “He selfishly kissed a girl before going off to die, he no doubt feels guilty about that.”

So, I was a sixth level Bravura Warlord. Kind of hastily put together, but Bloodclaw Fullblade +2 for Kamina’s Nodaichi, leather armor so he wouldn’t get slowed down, with unarmored parts showing his manly tattoos, and some stuff to increase his already fantastic damage. Blue hair, pink sunglasses that look completely ridiculous, OK. We’re ready to go.

Our characters find themselves in a dark place. No one can see anyone else, not even the drow players. Then, a dim light slowly reveals itself, and a Shadar-kai in gray robes steps out from the shadows. He tells us that we are people who were not meant to die (My ears perk up) and that we’re to participate in a game the Raven Queen allows once a year. One of us will be allowed to return to life. He tells us that we are each to pick a partner, and that we may not communicate except to ask the person if they will be our partner, or accept. Doing so will give us back the abilities we had in life. He then disappears and several shadow-like creatures start to move towards us.
    >> GURPSfag 04/27/09(Mon)08:17 No.4411647
Now, here are the characters. Two drow, one male and one female (The one playing the female was the DM’s girlfriend, and she drew art of her character, this is important), an elven ranger, and a couple of other guys we don’t give a fuck about, played by a friend of mine and some other guy who was new to D&D.

So who, among this motley crew, would Kamina choose as his partner? The one who would be with him at all times, working side by side with him through thick and thin? It would be a choice he would have to make carefully. It could mean the difference between life and death.

So the DM’s girlfriend shows us the art she drew of her character while she was waiting for everyone to finish. She looks hot.

Kamina stands up, places his arm around her shoulder, and says with a big smile “Do you want to be my partner?”

She punches him in the face.
    >> GURPSfag 04/27/09(Mon)08:17 No.4411650
He continues smiling as he takes his arm off her shoulder.

The shadows draw closer. Finally, the ranger guy asks Kamina if he’d like to be his partner. As the drow stick together, and the other guys select each other, Kamina accepts.

The group tears through the shadows like flamethrowers through fly paper with their abilities returned to them.

So, the teams all get to know each other better, as Kamina greets all of them with a grin. “Man, those shadows stood no chance against us. We make one hell of a team!”

The rest looked at each other, bemused.

“Maybe we shouldn’t get to know each other.” The male drow said. “After all, we’ll have to betray each other at some point.”

“What? No way! You all seem like honest folks. Not to worry,” Kamina said, crossing his arms, then turning and pointing towards the drow. “I’m the DEEEEEVINE Kamina! I’ll make sure we get out of here!”

“But, that guy said only one of us could leave. What you’re proposing is impossible.” The drow said in response.

“So what? Nothing’s impossible! When reality tells you you can’t do something, just keep going! A real man rams his head against the walls of reason until he makes a hole big enough to step through!”

This got a laugh from the group that was stifled by the appearance of new monsters, flaming angels and a huge column of fire. Along with them came the sinister voice of the announcer “Now, face your sins!”

The fire monster was easy. Kamina let the rouges tear into it and shouted out manly sayings. It also marked his first use of inspiring word, on the ranger (“Don’t believe in yourself! Believe in me who believes in you! Your arrow is the arrow that will pierce the heavens!”). No problem.

    Problem: The angels.

Basically, we found out we couldn’t hurt these things. And they came down and hit us each turn, screaming “REPENT!”. Finally, someone got the bright idea that they wanted us to say what our greatest sin was. The drow chick’s had something to do with love. The male drow was last, stabbing his angel as it came down to hit him. Cue my partner saying “I ate some children. They were delicious!”

At this point, Kamina’s like, what. But, he shouts out that he didn’t mean to leave “That woman” all alone like that, and that he was selfish. The last of the angels disappear. Yay.

The ranger looks over at Kamina, and says “Hey, good job.” Kamina walks over, grabs his partner by the collar and punches him in the face. For max damage. He then lifts him up by the collar and starts shaking him.

“Why the hell did you eat those kids?! What did they ever do to you? You do anything like that again, and I’ll kill you myself.” He dropped the elf and sat down on the ground, crosslegged, holding his sword by the scabbard so that it pointed straight up in the air from the ground. “Hey, Judge,” He said, not looking at the ranger. “Can we change partners?”

“Only if your partner and someone else’s die.” The voice said.

Hmm, that option was out. Kamina got the feeling that the drow chick wasn’t so bad, but his partner and at least one of the other guys were definitely not good guys.

The next challenge saw us shipped to the Faewild. We were on a lush, forested path, and there was nothing but jungle as far as the eye could see. It was perpetually daylight.

    “Which way do we go?”

Kamina stood up, put his sword sideways on his back, and began walking off down the path.

“What if that’s the wrong way?” The male drow asked.

“A man doesn’t care about wrong or right. When you tell him he’s wrong, he just keeps walking, even if it means ignoring reality and beating his own path!” Kamina said, not looking back.

The rest of the group shrugged and followed him.

It seemed like we walked for days, but the group finally came upon a clearing. The two we don’t care about were in the woods, following while concealed from a distance. The group stopped, unsure of the clearing.

“What if it’s trapped?” The male drow asked.

“Only one way to find out!” Kamina said, stepping in as… nothing happened.

The trap triggered when the other members of the path-walking group stepped in as well.

The male drow’s partner and mine were hit with a sleeping dart, and they fell unconscious as several pink blobs came out of the woods. No, they weren’t Kirbies, but something close: Gibbering mouthers! Myself and the drow had a hell of a time keeping them away from our unconscious comrades, who would have gotten hurt had the two in the woods not lured a mouther away with a deftly thrown dagger.

While our comrades are still asleep, the drow says to Kamina “Hey, towards the end, what say you and me kill our comrades and team up, then take down the other two?” Kamina was reluctant to turn on anyone, but his partner was one sick fuck. “We’ll see. If we have to, I suppose I won’t have a choice.” He was reluctant to avoid saving the drow woman, but, hey. It couldn’t be helped if that was how they were going to be. Besides, maybe she’d take him down and Kamina would get her as his partner!

After dealing with the blobs, Kamina and the others found themselves back in the dark place. “Now,” said the announcer. “You face the last of the challenges. Each other!” The robed Shadar-kai watched in silence atop a shadowy staircase as the groups looked at each other warily.

Kamina sat down on the ground, crossing his arms and letting his sword fall to his side.

“I refuse to fight any of you! We’ve done nothing to earn each other’s ire! Even if you didn’t do the best things in life, you’ve all shown me the comradeship we hold. We’ve all worked together as a fantastic team! We’ve proven that we can overcome anything you throw at us! We’ve faced our sins together and showed you our determination. If you’re going to try and derive entertainment from us turning on each other, too bad! We won’t do it!”

After a while, one of the guys we hadn’t paid attention to sneak attacked (literally) the male drow and brought him to one hit point with an action point.

    Well, shit. It’s initiative time.

The group is locked in battle. The drow manages to survive his round, and I’m dead last (as usual). I notice the Shadar-kai sitting at the top of the steps, watching the spectacle eagerly.

    A thought occurs to me.

Soon after, my turn comes up.

Kamina stands and picks up his sword. He starts walking towards the Shadar-kai, drawing it as he speaks, the group engaged in battle behind him like vultures fighting over meat.

“You! You’re the one who’s caused all these problems! They never would have raised a finger against each other if it weren’t for you!” Kamina picks up a running start, running towards the stairs. I blow an action point for another move action. At this point, my partner is on the ropes anyway, almost bloodied. I figure this next move will probably kill me. But I do it, because that’s what Kamina would do.

“Who do you think you are? You derive pleasure from seeing other people suffer! You think you’re so high above us you can watch us like we’re toys? We’re not toys!” Kamina reaches the top of the stairs, raising his sword over his head in a jumping charge attack. “We’re people! But you’re less than even a worm! And I will not stand by while you pretend you’re anything even close to human!” Kamina brought his sword down on the robed figure, and I was fully expecting to get hit by a spell, sent to the floor in one attack.

But the Shadar-kai fell. The platform disappeared. Kamina fell to the ground, still clutching his sword. Everyone stopped fighting as they saw Kamina stand and shake the blood off his sword.

“Wow. You beat him!” The drow said. “But how are we going to get out of here?”

“Well. I don’t know.” Kamina said, looking around in the darkness. “Maybe there’s a door somewhere around here?”

After a few minutes, one of the others searched the drow’s body, finding a “panic button” that summoned a few other robed figures to the area.

“I see the test has not gone as planned.” One of the figures said, an older female Shadar-kai. “And the tester is dead.”

“Let us go. We’ve beaten each of your challenges.” Kamina said, gazing a steely gaze at the older woman.

“I shall. We have not seen a show like that in quite some time. Our watchers were all quite impressed by your group. Even split up and told that all but one of you would die, you worked together.” She looked down at the guy’s corpse again. “But, now we have an opening. I will let all but one of you go. We have to have a replacement.”

Now, Kamina was all ready to sacrifice himself. But then, he remembered. Two of these guys were pretty much sociopaths. He wasn’t sure he could sacrifice himself for someone who might’ve eaten Simon or burned his village to ashes.

“I’ll do it.” The otherwise unimportant arsonist spoke up.

    “You sure?” Kamina said.

“Yeah. It’s the least I can do. It’s kind of like being immortal, in a way.”

“Fine.” An acceptable loss. He was a pretty bad guy.

The five surviving members started floating downwards, watching the Shadar-kai and the one who was willing to stay behind fade into the darkness. Kamina gave him a thumbs up as he faded from view. The group found themselves in the middle of a village in the dead of night.

“Well, what are you going to be doing, Kamina?” The male drow said, after the characters got used to being alive again.

“I still have a family to go back to. My brother and that woman still need my help fighting off those beastmen. She’s going to hit me hard when she sees me. And yourself?”

“I figured I might follow you.” The drow said.

“Do as you like.” Kamina turned to his former partner. “And you. Go about your business, but if I hear any word about children being devoured, I’ll hunt you down myself, got it?”

“Sure, I understand.” The ranger said, smiling.

“You too.” Kamina said, looking at the rouge.

“What about you, miss? You have a boyfriend of your own, don’t you?” Kamina said to the drow woman.

“He’s- he’s dead.” She said, looking distraught.

“Don’t worry. I came back from the dead, didn’t I? We all did! And for a girl as pretty as you, any man would come back from hell through sheer force of will. I’ll find a way to bring him back.” Kamina patted her on the shoulder. “You can come along with me for the time being. I have some beastmen to take care of before I get to that.”

With that, Kamina and the other two walked off into the rising sun. Everyone was ecstatic. The DM and the other two wanted to continue the game with Kamina in it. We haven't so far, but on the walk home that night, I felt like anything was possible.

+2 chain is giving you +9 AC, while +2 leather is going to give you a shitty +4 AC, and you're only going to have a +1 Dex or Int mod as a Bravura warlord.

Adaptation of Kamina to my fantasy setting:

The origins of Kamina are shrouded in mystery, extending back before the human exodus; however, legends say that Kamina was once a mortal human who started and, for a time, lead a popular rebellion against the king of the time (Though, scholars are conflicted as to who the king was exactly. Some records indicate the king was an orc, others human, and some indicate that he was of an unknown beast race). The legends also speak that he, after being slain in battle, rose back to life - his body battered beyond all repair - to rally the routing troops.

Now, he is a popular god, among athletes, and is always cited as a patron during any rebellion against a kingdom. Priests of Kamina frequently hold competitions in various skills and strengths. And while the church of Kamina is not inherently anti-government, it's close ties with rebellion insure relations between the church and kings are tenuous.

A few hundred years ago a king banned the Kamina Games within his kingdom. The people promptly rebelled, and despite being wielded with only pitch forks and wearing only rags, the peasantry were able to overthrow the king.

No, this one shot actually happened. And the story has no place in GL's continuity, except for vague familiar references I dropped.

On top of that, I had no control over who was the "main character", but me and Ben (Playing the male drow) were the only players who said much at all.

More of a writeup of a session, just one that included Kamina as a character.

By the way: As far as the leather armor is concerned, I would like to direct your attention to page 52 of the Adventurer's Vault. Skybound Leather. I wanted it for the encounter power, but never used it. Sides, Kamina doesn't even wear a shirt. I compromised and gave him some armor that wouldn't impede his manly stunts if he had been forced to make any.

He wasn't originally my character, though.

Kamina is good for a lead up into a single blaze of glory. I'm not sure ANYONE could pull off playing Kamina consistently for an entire campaign.

You did it extremely fucking well for this one shot though.

The basic plot is that you're a kid who died and has been given a second chance at life by playing a game (I forget the game, if it even HAD one). On the first day you have to choose a partner from amongst the other players, and thus you and your partner gain the ability to fight back against the reapers' shadow monsters. Game lasts 7 days, winners get to come back to life.

Other than that, the plot of the campaign seems to diverge from the game.

the gameplay is fun, but very hectic in a kind of shooter/rpg hybrid that uses the stylus and d-pad at the same time during combat (the d-pad part can be put on auto-pilot if you're a loser) and the difficulty has a few different ways for you to scale it up to increase drop rates on items.

I don't think anyone could keep up with playing a Kamina-like character for an entire serious campaign. My attempt started out fairly consistent but resulted in him turning grimmer and more calculated after I wound up getting many innocent people needlessly killed during an attempt at starting a revolution (like, I got the better part of an entire village executed because I made the mistake of not researching what I was going against). He still focused on trying to encourage people towards acts of heroism and feats of bravery, but he all in all became a lot less headstrong and slightly self doubting.

That doesn't apply when you don't have the plot keeping you alive until the 8th episode. Any sort of semi realistic world isn't going to allow someone to be a hero like that for very long all. Shit happens and people die, you often have no say in it.

I actually based my character's personality on Kamina. And alot of people have died because of him. He doesn't doubt though, he just gets angrier and whips up more and more fervor towards success. Also... and I flat out did not realize the Kamina-like attributes of this until typing this post, but he has a weird obsession with stealing impressive shit from the enemy and throwing it back at them.

People die, but that doesn't mean you stop. You have eyes on the front of your head for a reason, so you can look ahead and not worry about your home or the past. You just keep moving forward. Bit by bit. You fight. You struggle. Even if everything seems stacked against you. Even if the sky threatens to fall.

    You keep going forward.

Actually, play the character right and in most systems it isn't. From what I've seen, people who die tend to be the ones who stick with their plan of "just use my abilities as best I can, the DM shouldn't make it too hard."

    Lesson for life:

That doesn't mean you blindly rush forward with selfish disregard for the lives of innocent people. This should hold especially true in the D&D universe where the player characters are powerful in the most literal sense of the word.

We have two that alternate, one of which is me. Everyone who expected this to be easy quickly learned otherwise, which is probably why my PC and his are the two doing the best right now. Because we've pretty much realized that the plan that seems the most likely to work will probably still fall short of being enough, while the crazy one just might if the dice hold up long enough for it. And now and then they don't. Read: getting torn in half by a troll

I played a Kamina like character in a dnd 3.5 game, he was a fighter. Kept it up most of the game, at one point we were all lv 16 and fighting in a huge battle, kingdom vs mix of orc, kobold, goblin, and some demon. My Kamina fighter fell, but had a wish ring, and wished before his death that he could fight on, and help his breatheren.

He was given a second chance, but not only was he restored to full health, he was merged with a shiny red suit of armor, the head was located on the chest. Whenever he did battle in this armor the "head" would light up with fire, and it gave a rather nice bonus to AC and Str, he more or less became a bad ass android.

The battle ends and his body stops working, his job done. But he was revived anyway and eventually ascended to god hood.

While this one adventure turned out great, I wouldn't recommend playing Kamina long term. You got very lucky that events went in your favor this time, but that will not always be the case, and when shit goes downhill it will seem as if you have failed the character.

For example: it could have just as easily been you who was knocked out by a sleeping dart, which while relatively minor would have made your story that much less awesome. Shit like that will happen, constantly, in a longer running campaign. Let him remain as the perfect burst of glory we see now, rather than watch him slowly collapse into a pile of embers.
