Has anyone ever tried running a Transformers game? No, I'm not talking about mechanics, as everyone usually just goes "HERP DERP BESM/D20MECHA/MECHAMORPHOSIS", but I mean the actual story and setting. I want to get into one, but its just not clicking in the fluff side.
    >> Anonymous 05/10/09(Sun)15:22 No.4518783
Nah, Transformers has some pretty god-awful fluff. A game where you play as Transformers would be pretty cool if the backstory and universe weren't so fucking convoluted and half-retarded.

One time in a Star Wars campaign our character's were gassed and all had strange dreams. Our pilots was that he was piloting our ship when suddenly it began to talk to him. Turns out, every vehicle we had ever liberated was a transformer, including our ship. In the dream he went on to conquer and enslave the entire party. The rest of the game he did his best to program AI's for all of our vehicles so that they would talk. We got a bi-polar land speeder out of it.

Naruto hasn't had thousands of retarded manchildren declare that the slightest change will ruin everything forever, bawwing constantly unless every single whim of theirs is met and making western comics look SENSIBLE in their plots and settings. Transformers is one of the most horrible abortions of intellectual property I've ever seen.

In all seriousness, I'd rather see a Twilight RPG than a Transformers RPG.

I have a friend who is a Transformers fanatic, and he apparently invented some rules based on the little stat cards that come with the toys, and using the actual toys as miniatures. I'm not sure how it works, but the guys who played it seemed to enjoy it. I think it was pretty simple and a short campaign, though.

You could conceivably run a good Naruto RPG, though. Magical ninjas is a fun concept, and without the retarded main characters and filler I think it could make for a pretty sweet game in the right hands. The world and setting of Naruto aren't the problem, the plot and characters are, neither of which would be present in a well-run RPG.

I might have been able to stand a Transformers setting if it had stuck with JUST ONE SETTING, like G1 or something, but the fact that they reboot the series so there's new toys every 2-5 years makes me sick. Its like the creators have ADHD but still a fetish for dayglo robots dressed in American flag colors.

I mean fuck, that newest set had three different reboots IN ONE STORY.

YOU'RE RUINING TRANSFORMERS FOREVER" if anything is even slightly different from their 25 year old toy commercials. And no, I'm not JUST slandering the original cartoon series, they will send death threats to toy designers for not using the literal toy commercials as reference points.

Tip: Its not THOSE people throwing the word manbaby around. They don't have time, between death threats and filling every flat surface in their house with a plastic toy thats in slightly different colors from the last 10 versions.

What the fuck, this has nothing to do with how cool it would be to have an RPG where you play as a robot who transforms into things.

This could fit into a D20 system no problem. Different stats on each form like transforming into a bear. Energon would replace food with some bonuses to stats when overloaded with it.

There was already a class based system for the Transformers so it would flow rather easily. Soundwave is a spy/infiltrator, Starscream is a ranged DPS, Optimus is a warrior.

Come on guys, you get to make your own robots that transform then roll dice to see if they succeed on their ride skill.

And yet look at this topic. Rife with them.

Of course, the setting is still retarded and worthless for an RPG. Decepiticons are saturday morning cartoon villains. Nobody WANTS to be a decepticon. They're evil for evil's sake. There's no possible benefit to being a decepticon because they're so retarded. They cannot form a society, they're just a bunch of violent savages who want to kill and destroy. Nevermind the typical comic book bullshit about alternate timelines and alternate realities and multiversal singularities and bullshit like that
    >> Anonymous 05/10/09(Sun)23:16 No.4522270
I've run Transformers pretty successfully by using the Spirit of the Century rules. The step by step guide to making a pulp story translates fairly well to the episodic nature of the cartoon series.

The last time I ran it, the party was a group of Autobots tasked with acting as a security at the latest technology press conference, where a little known scientist named Al Gore announced that he'd created a global computer network which he called the "internet."

The whole first half of the G2 series was Autobots vs Decepticons. They did unite against Jhiaxus' Cybertronians in the second half. There'd be some interesting RP potential in having the two factions being forced to work together, especially if the PCs were on opposing sides.

Or you just don't have a good enough imagination.

-Any of the zany "Megatron's crazy scheme of the week" episodes would be fun for a light-hearted game.
-The Matrix Quest the Autobots go on before the coming of Unicron in the G1 comics would be good fodder for a multi-planet investigative game.
-The battle against Unicron himself would be an awesome game, whether drawn from the comics or from the cartoon.
-The loose alliance formed between Autobot and Decepticon after Unicron is defeated in the G1 comic has a lot of potential.
-The party could be a group of Autobots defending Autobot City during the Decepticon attack during the G1 movie.
-You could do something cool with the liberation of Cybertron from the Quintessons in the early part of Transformers history.
-Ditto for the early days of the Autobot/Decepticon war, when most of the planet didn't/couldn't believe that there was a rebel faction conquering the cities.

That's only with five minutes of brainstorming.

    Transformers is American.
The original TF toys are japanese.
G1 had western storywriters. So had Beast Wars and Animated.
RID, Armada, Energon and Cybertron were produced and written by Japanese companies.
So, you can whine all you want about how messy TF Mythology is, as long as you realize this difference, and its significance.
