An Imperial survey fleet drops out of warp at the edge of an uncharted star system. Initial scans indicates the local sun to be a fairly healthy main sequence star. The outer planets are primarily gas giants suitable for vapor mining, while the inner planets appear to be rich in mineral wealth. Occupying the green band is a single verdant, habitable world.

As the fleet gets underway, a number of sensor returns appear ahead of their course. The vox receiver hisses static for a moment, warbling along the electromagnetic spectrum until a clear signal cuts through. A voice from the void speaks.

"Terran, you are tresspassing on protoss territory. This stellar system and its surrounding environs belongs to the children of the Xel'naga by right of inheritence. By order of the Conclave of Aiur, you are instructed to withdraw immediately or you will be fired upon. Go in peace and no harm shall come to you. Ignore this warning and you shall be destroyed. These terms are non-negotiable."

    Your orders, Captain?

where was I, Yes.. The War. The humans, I think, knew they were doomed. Where another race would surrender to despair, the humans fought back with greater strength. They made the Minbari fight for every inch of space. In my life, I have never seen anything like it; They would weep, they would pray, they would say goodbye to their loved ones, and then throw themselves without fear or hesitation at the very face of death itself, never surrendering. No one who saw them fighting against the inevitable could help but be moved to tears by their courage. Their stubborn nobility. When they ran out of ships, they used guns, when they ran out guns they used knives and sticks and bare hands. They were magnificent. I only hope that when it is my time, I may die with half as much dignity as I saw in their eyes in the end. They did this for two years; they never ran out of courage. But in the end, they ran out of time.

So say a fleet of capital ships arrive, launch fighters, bombers, and whatnot, and progressively gnaw away at the weapons and such, that they stand no chance because they are not FUCKHUGE HELL YEAH. I doubt that.

I disagree with that. In fluff, 40k ships have ridiculous numbers of guns (with each point of attack representing a full battery), and since we have no basis for comparison, we can't assume that 40k ships have relatively less firepower in comparison to other, smaller ships.

Especially since 40k ships can shoot at each other from hundreds of kilometers away, and the main Protoss fighter has to be within twice the range of a marine's rifle in order to hit the marine.

They'd be very small and fast and have huge powerblades mounted on the front and their whole purpose would be to punch straight through the enemy ships. They'd need some kind of carrier ship though, but with the sizes of these other ships being 1-5km long, I think they could find some room.

    New idea:
Long forgotten by human history, an ancient Terran civilization is once again reunited with their ancient relatives, only to discover them a twisted and corrupt race, now defined only by war and religious zealotry!

The EVE Gate re-opens, and fleets of ships pour through to the Milky Way from New Eden, thousands upon thousands of eager explorers waiting to rediscover their rightful homelands are cast into a war that is not their own!

Do the Amarr side with the Imperium? Will the Caldari see their philosophical similarities with the Tau? Can the five EVE Empires prevent the Tyranids, Necrons, and Orks from reaching New Eden, and beginning new marauding campaigns against their space?

    Warhammer 40k clashes with EVE.

I remember a thread when somebody got the specifications of a Leman Russ battle tank and compared it to modern day main battle tank. The Russ lost on every single aspect. The armor was weaker, the main cannon was weaker, its speed was slower. Its only advantage was its magic engine that could burn anything to make it run.

The Leman Russ' main cannon is a 120mm - the same size as German, American, English, and others besides main battle tanks. It's only problem is the imperiums staunch need for it to fire HE and only HE all the time. Vanquisher's fire some kind of solid penetrator like modern MBTs, so I can't see the gun being less powerful. Their profile is absurdly tall however.

I really hate how GW fanboys always justify their pet faction winning all theoretical encounters with the same two points: "Ours are bigger" and "We have more."

This is especially retarded when comparing to something like Starcraft, which is in a setting of a much smaller scale.

It's like saying one F-22 is no match for four million F-15s. Fucking duh. Quit being a retard.

No, 40k ships like to get within visual range of each other ( visual as in by human eye ) and broadside one another like they're Lord Horatio fucking Nelson. Numerous comics, shorts, a few books and all the BFG material confirms this level of stupidity.

If that's not any worse Orks try to physically ram ships. In space. The concept of even getting that close is just absurd when you throw in the sheer vastness, the Z-axis and how projectiles would work in spaces ( i.e. it's missile\railgun territory ) and the ranges involved..

No, 'real' space combat you wouldn't even see your aggressor. Much like it is today. Only at even more ridiculous ranges.

And for those mentioning fighters and bombers in space... lol no. The era of space combat is apt to kill that concept like the crossbow did the knight.

Don't forget... One ship one shots a Borg cube, 8 ships linked exterminates a planet.... And they're the size of shuttles.

I'm not sure who came up with them, but it must've been a real wank fest. Granted the Borg where eventually given technology to fight back against them, even so they put the Collective into shambles.

    No they don't...

BFG states the scale battles are in and it's huge. Ramming a ship has a minute chance of happening.

Anyway, Long range firepower won't be missiles and torpedoes though, they're even more obsolete than fighters. Lasers all the way.

And cheaper. Railguns, too, if by then we've developed more reliable ways to not burn out the magentic rods.

The future of space combat ( if any, I doubt it for a couple of centuries.. ) will be decided by missile and railgun spam and crazy electronic warfare.

Save for the canon occurances where Russes get hit in the side armor and get out unscratched by shells with enough KE to tear through a modern MBT from front to end and still pack enough ounch to kill another tank.
Or the part where the gun is a good deal fucking bigger than 120mm by the sheer visuals. That thing's closer to a 8-inch cruiser gun.

40k has nothing but the fanboys? Well, the fanboys AND THE FUCKING CANON EXAMPLES.

    >>4594778
Try Imperial Armour 1. Imp tanks have a rather wide variety of shells for their guns. You just have only the HE in normal games for rule streamlining.

    >>4594791
LOLWUT? 72 inches range in the TT roughly translate into "If you can see it, you can hit it". Fucking snipers have 36 inches and are stated in the fluff to score headshots at up to 4 klicks.

    >>4594826
Here´s a problem: The only stats given for the armor facings are in "conventional steel" and it´s an in-universe document. "Conventional steel" 38k years into the future and "conventional steel" today arne´t the same thing.

    >>4598561
Except for the part where all written fluff disagrees and has 40k ships broadsiding each other from hundreds of thousands of kilometers distance. Getting close is only somewhat viable in 40k space battles because msot 40k vessels can take absurb amounts of firepower to the bare hull before even caring. Absurb is in "makes the dinokiller asteroid look like a firecracker".
