    Okay idea for a setting:
    1. It is discovered that the laws of Physics are not laws at all, but sub-molecular diseases.
    2. Non-organic materials are effected just as equally as people.
    2. Normally these diseases are passed down to any offspring, or spread from nearby items, but people have discovered the cures for a number of individual "laws".
    3. E.g. People will float off the Earth if they cure themselves of Gravity, though they can get reinfected by a different strain.
    4. Some people believe these disease essentially allowed humans to come into existence (especially the disease of electricity allow mental thought), so seek to destroy the cures.
    5. Other people believe these disease hold us back, and in curing us of all these diseases we can return to our spiritual, bodiless, higher existence.

Guess it would work on Mutants&masterminds, with a sort of cyberpunk anti-corporate bend.

The idea of gravity as the effect of a disease intrigues me.
    >> Anonymous 05/29/09(Fri)23:21 No.4705391
Where did these diseases come from? Might they have been some sort of out-of-control bioweapon?

Also, I once had an idea where all emotions are actually parasitic organisms that live in our neurotransmitters. Feel free to steal that, too.

"Just tell me Doc, tell it to me straight!"
    "You've got... you've got gravity."
    "Shit. How strong is it?"
"About 9.81 meters per second per second. Don't worry you'll still be able to walk."
"Walk? Walk! I used to be one of the best fliers this side of the border!"

Just say "brain," please. Neurotransmitters are small molecules, not even the size of proteins.

Oh, come now, it's a sci-fi campaign. They can be really tiny if they need to be.

On that note, make the villains be an evil race of RNA-like critters that link onto the DNA and add an extra helix to manipulate other races.

Well, they'd have to be before the big bang, otherwise that wouldn't match current physics. Some sort of biology experiment, which destabilised to create the original disease (an unknown strain). This disease then mutated into multiple strains such as gravity, light (which split into red, blue, infra red sub-strains), etc. The initial disease would be key to discovering a unified theory in Physics, so is the "unified" strain. The symptoms theoretically generate energy or mass from the infected molecules.

You mean like any variations at all. It turns out that humans exist within such a tiny band of what physics could possibly exist that even minor changes could make us impossible. Hell, certain minor changes could make matter impossible.

You need certain Laws of Physics, rules that, if broken, get your arse kicked by Chronospatial Enforcers.

Well, those diseases are pretty virulent and nobody has found a cure yet.

Another problem is that nobody is entirely sure if curing the diseases in any order is such a good idea. Curing someone of electricity just leaves you with a brain-dead corpse. So there are some people working on which order you should cure someone in if you want to free them of their bodily existence, without killing them in the process.

Of course, with these things, there's a lot of self-experimentation. A couple of people have vanished into a nothing while working on some of the harder molecular-cohesion diseases.

You mean vanished in a GIGANTIC FUCKING EXPLOSION as the energy contained in their mass was completely liberated? The sheer size of the numbers in E=MC/\2 means that one hundred percent mass to energy conversion is a very scary thing. Hell, nuclear weapons only have about three percent at best.

There is an acamoth in MtAwakening from the Invaders book. It is essentially a disease that infects the time space continuum and causes a breakdown in normal physics and reality. People who study it cause reality to malfunction in their vicinity, and it is contatagious - a living meme that interrupts reality because you understand it.

What this campaign centers around is that this acamothic disease is not, in fact, an invader. It is actually the natural state of reality breaking through this disease infested reality.

Not exactly a bonus in the long run. Saying you are wrong is only of comfort to those who want to see something say it is wrong. To everyone else it'd be scary as all getout.

well, that' d be assuming that their experiment did what they were trying to achieve. They might have cured themselves of something else, like mass (not converting themselves into energy... just nullifying their mass completely)
    >> Anonymous 05/30/09(Sat)00:05 No.4705825
What exactly would the cure be?

I'd say Science is ALMOST as belief-based as Religion. Science has a successful habit of predicting things beforehand based on its internal logic. Religion has a more of "well that guy says this is gonna happen" and it's always the same guy instead of any general internal logic.
    >> Anonymous 05/30/09(Sat)00:11 No.4705894
    >>4705873

Of course science is belief-based. Every experience we have of the world around us is involves some level of belief.

Religion is FAITH-based, though, and therein lies the difference.
