So /tg/, it can easily be assumed what tropical islander elves would look like and act like, but it got me thinking:

What would tropical dwarves look like?

Also, what sort of monsters would be the most common in a tropical setting? Obviously aquatic monsters would be more common, and would probably a lot more brightly colored...

    sweaty.

seriously. tall and thin is the way to evolve in a hot climate.

dwarves are mush more suited to a colder clmate (eskimo, for example, are shorter and stockier, with proportionally smaller limbs than say, kenyans)

That's because Warcraft trolls have jamaican accents.

Jamaican dorfs with dreadlock-beards, smoking short thick pipes full of Rastafarian goodness, quaffin' up rum, and extolling the virtues of a storm-proofed house.

Since mines aren't feasible on small islands (because flooding could be a problem), they're known mostly for amazing wood carving, and pearl diving. The latter involves making a lot of rope, tying it to their ankles, then jumping into the oyster pits, and stuffing the oysters into their beards before climbing back out.

they don't need to. dwarven beards are a specialy adapted organ designed for radiating or preserving heats as necessary depending on the environment. this is how they can carve cities of solid ice inside glaciers, yet also thrive in obisidian cities with canals lava flowing through the streets.

I've played Dorf Fotress on a tropical island, thats not really what happens.

The best way I can describe what happens is with two words: Dorf Rapture.

Is a Dorf not entiled to delicious ale?
NO! Says Dorf King, it belongs to me!
NO! Says the Elves, it belongs to the forest!
NO! Says the Kobolds, I will wear it as a hat!

I rejected these answers, I chose another way, I chose: The Rapture!

That's basically how it goes, except with more lava and less glass.

Humans: Typical british colonial towns with castles and stuff. Think Port Royal from PoTC. Typical human clothes.
Elves: Typical tropical islanders: Huts, fishing in canoes, very little clothing. Tiki style shit.

Said 'Houses' are actually seaworthy. If they get washed off the island into the sea in a storm, they float. Being very family-centered people, they typically keep a lot of oars on hand to row the house back to their island afterwards.

What about gnomes now? Are they tiny colonials out to prospect pearls? Or little dark afro-laden witchdoctors who brew strange potions in crude huts?

Though going through the water table as in Dwarf Fortress isn't happening that way either. I was just suggesting it for preventing flooding in caves made of actual rock. (Since islands tend to have quite a bit of rock above the water table, unlike in Dwarf Fortress)

Depends how far down the aquifer goes, you might find yourself pumping for a looooong time.

There is a bug that might help you but I don't know if it's still in the game anymore, try collapsing a cavern roof over the aquifer tiles. This should remove the aquifer where ever the collapsed material falls.

Mining through an aquifer isn't difficult.

Build a big square hole into it. Put pumps along all of the edges, draining back into channels dug into the aquifer. A wall of suction, essentially. Build real walls where the pumps are pumping from. Enjoy your dry hole through the aquifer.

    >> Anonymous 05/30/09(Sat)13:30 No.4710810
So let's say we've got these bombad rastafarian dorfs. They mine around the volcano, and periodically drain the lava into the ocean to prevent 'OMGTHEFIREGODHATESUS' moments that all but killed off the native humans, and also create more stone to build their intricate bridge system with.

The island halflings are tiny cannibals. Not savages, they're still the happy pipe-smoking guys we know and love, they just happen to figure that meat is meat and so eat friends and enemies alike. They are fond of patterned tattoos, and the warriors among them tend towards bone-piercings.

Gnomes are french colonials, run a major trading company on the backs of humanity, shipping spices, fruit, and other exotic things back to civilization. All the larger islands in the area have a gnomic city, run by a governor-merchant.

Elves live in lean-to's and huts, and never build anything more complicated than that. Deep in the thicker forests, there are elves that havn't seen the ground in years, since there's little reason to leave the treehouse/bridge city they have there. There's a lot of hippy love-ins and so forth.

Humans are humans, trying to make a buck through piracy or trade, or just enjoying the climate, on the run from the complicated life on the mainland.

I'm a big fan of the "Stout Jamaican" look people are suggesting, but I think that the native Hawaiian body type would make more sense for several reasons:

-Rounded shape perfesct for living in dwarf tunnels
-Large fat reserves to hold them over during the long ocean voyages from islandvolcanomountainhome to their new islandvolcanofortress
-Like to party and idle, but can still get shit done when needed

That's not to say we should scrap Jamaican dwarves, because they are still awesome; they're more likely to have originated from continental dwarves, though. Probably they were picked up by human slavers so that they could work their island dimple cup plantations; man, humans are dicks.

Elves and dwarves aren't universally correct choices. They are fictional. There isn't any concrete requirement (that I've seen) for why they end up in 99% of medieval fantasy settings, but they do. Sure, there are reasons, like how they've been accepted over such a long time that new ideas have to be much better to even be considered, but that doesn't change the fact that your metaphor is stupid.

Because every time people try to come up with something new, they try too hard to be different.

Elves are slender humans with pointy ears. Dwarves are short humans with beards. Elves are aloof hippies that like trees and magic. Dwarves are surly craftsmen that like rocks and booze.

Attempts to make new races invariably end up with extra limbs, animal traits, and crazy coloration. Their personality always manages to have some needless duality (savage, but noble). And for whatever reason, the entire race has a single culture, which is lifted wholesale from one on earth (egyptians or japanese, most likely).

It's damn hard to "innovate" something from scratch, and have it done well. Things happen one step at a time.

Your average wholly-original race is invariably a Planet of Hats. Readers/players aren't going to pay attention beyond that. They've got one single characteristic that the entire race shares. Vanilla elf and dwarf are like this. Tolkein really fleshed them the fuck out, but no one other than real lotrfags cared. Elves are tall, advanced and fading, dwarves are short, headstrong and loud.

So. You're making a fantasy race. You CAN do something original, if there's a single concept you want them all to share, or you can adopt elf or dwarf as a template and build on that. One-hat race or something approaching a real culture? God, the choice is terrible.

not sure what elves would have, seeing as in this setting they're so laid back i'd have a hard time thinking they'd have time out from fishing, chillaxing, partying and casual sex to have time to need clerics or paladins. if witchdoctors arent their own class, i'd say elven witchdoctors would be clerics

dwarves would probably be monstly unchanged. possibly different preferred weapons and armor types, but otherwise very simmilar

The dwarves favor the volcano god. The god won't stop the volcano's eruptions, but he will make sure valuable gems in the lava flow will cluster around the settlements of his most devout followers. Other dwarves worship a very similar sea god.

The halfling cannibals are involved with the god of blood, but as adversaries rather than worshipers. They believe the blood god draws strength from every corpse they let him have, and some day will rise up to kill them all. So, rather than burying their dead, they eat them to keep them away from the blood god. They realize that other races bury their dead, so they try to kill their neighbors and eat them before that happens.

The humans and gnomes are from pantheistic societies and worship a variety of gods, but given their trades the most common are the gods of trade and conquest.

The elves worship the forest spirits rather than a single god, but the forest spirits themselves worship a shepherd god of their own. Witchdoctors (clerics) and their holy warriors (paladins) worship the shepherd god directly, deriving their power from helping the forest spirits through their lives.

Fair enough. Can we keep the same shepherd god for all the spirits on the island, and just have the elves worship whatever spirits are closest to them?

That is, the non-holy elves worship the sea spirits or forest spirits (or wherever else on the island they are at the moment), but their spiritual leaders all worship the same higher god.

    that works.

one thing i've been juggling around in the back of my mind for a while is the elves using clothing as a mark of nobility, so the leader or whatever of a tribe has dyed, decorated, elaborate clothing, while the lowest peasant (or equivalent in that society) have very little (if anything at all). This would of course change between tribes. For example, the elf in the op pic would be fairly poor, but her family at least has high enough rank to allow them that outfit.

it would make sense with the general idea that elves in this setting seem to have one single commandment in their religion, and that is "be happy" (ok, maybe two, the second being "protect nature" to fit in with them being elves, but you get my point)

For this reason, Nauru boasted the highest per-capita income in the world. But when the phosphate reserves were exhausted, and the environment had been severely degraded by mining, the trust established to manage the island's wealth significantly reduced in value. To obtain income, the government resorted to unusual measures. In the 1990s, Nauru briefly became a tax haven and money laundering centre. Since 2001, it has accepted aid from the Australian government, and in exchange housed, until early 2008, an offshore detention centre that held and processed asylum seekers trying to enter Australia.

not really. its more like they're generally much happier than the other races because they dont seem to have concepts in their culture of 'personal property' (outside of the house you live in, that is. clothes are merely for denoting rank or for protection while working/fighting, tools and weapons belong to everyone, and they dont tend to own anything else), 'adultery' (sex is still something to keep private, but its just an enjoyable past-time. they don't get why other races make such a fuss about it being with a certain person), 'modesty' (again, clothes are merely for social status or protection, its too damn hot otherwise), or 'war' (the sea and trees provide more than enough food, gold is just some shiny, so why would they bother picking fights?)

    whoops, hit submit accidentally

religion to islander elves is basically just another excuse for a party, and having higher rank means having to wear hotter, heavier clothes all day and having to perform religious ceremonies on special occasions, so elves generally want to avoid positions of power than claim them.

in fact, thanks to being so attuned to nature, islander elves generally catch more fish and find more fruit than they need when they go out fishing/gathering, so they often have several days in a row where the entire tribe has nothing to do but relax.

so hedonists, no. uncorrupt, socially-different, happy people with too much free time, yes

I'd just like to put in my two cents about the OP topic.

    > "What would tropical Dorfs look like?"

Picture a retired military man, now heading into his late sixties, early seventies. He's not skinny or gangly, oh no; he's somewhat short and pudgy due to his retirement funds and pension plan, having enough food to eat and coming from an age where smoking a pipe and eating lots of food was encouraged. A man from a time long gone, who holds himself in high esteem and loves to have a good time.

Now, picture this. He has retired to Hawaii, and he's loving every minute of it. He's become completely absorbed in Hawaiin trends, fitting in with the locals perfectly. Tanned, and the sun giving his skin the nutrients it needs to stop from sagging all over the place, he's actually quite healthy from frequent walks on through town and working around his small house on the shore, fixing it up to living conditions with nothing but a hammer, some nails, and a lot of palm trees to chop down with a simple axe.

Now, picture him with a long beard.

That's what I think a tropical Dwarf would be like.

Over the centuries, a dwarf clan followed the birth of volcanoes. As each new island erupted from the sea floor, formed, and then cooled, the dwarfs mined out the empty lava tunnels and formed a network of passages beneath the shallow seas.

the dwarfs get along well with island-dwelling elves. The elves bring harvests of fruit and fish, and the dwarfs supply them with obsidian and the occasional metal tool.

gnomes and humans, however, are rarely welcomed. Their greed is plain to see, and the dwarfs guard their islands carefully. It is difficult to explain the concepts of conflict to the local elves, so the dwarfs take it upon themselves to protect them as well. They are somewhat naive, but their honesty and trustworthiness is somewhat endearing.

It wouldn't be dragonborn - it would be lizardmen, descended from the komod-dragon sized lizards that were the first real inhabitants of the island. They typically leave the other humanoids alone, content to bask in the sun, eat seaweed and mermaids, and dive for shells, pearls, and commune with the goddess of wave and the god of beach.

Somewhat like lazy surfers who prefer to tan than to surf.

Why is it that the second someone says Orc, the 40k crowd shows up? The spanish weren't dumb as brick ax-murderers, this doesn't fit. If what we know about them is true, they were probably the most advanced people of the time period. Toledo had swords that made those Japanese toothpicks look like shitscrapers.

it turns out all the iron in japan was shitty iron, not good for making steel from. so swords were really hard to make, so only some people could have them, so japan was doomed to fail whenever it fought the west because the west isn't hobbled by the way of the warrior bullshit.

Is there a third, more war-like group of island dwellers in this setting? The Elves and the Dwarves seem pretty tame and co-operative, but a group based off the Caribs would be interesting.

Lizardmen once had a grand empire on the islands, but now there is nothing left but ruins. The remaining lizardfolk have devolved to have even worse technology than the elves. They just hang around the old ruins, running off anyone who would plunder them, but otherwise not being much of a threat or influence in the area

    The Romans where lizardmen.

Italians and Spaniards are the remnants of this old empire?

Just dishing out ideas, I personally like the spanish Orcs idea better. Spaniards in holy wars of epic proportions against the Moors really fits the Orcs. Stubbornly they fight the outsiders, refusing to give up their culture and independence.

Could be either. As they say, this is more about roles than culture-analogies. The "New Guys" coming in with their cannons and their warships to screw around with people having a perfectly good time on their islands with obsidian tools is certainly not tied to any one European nation, they could very easily be a combination of all of the imperialistic Europeans.

    The Portugese?

A major colonial playerr in other parts of the world, but one that doesn't actually have any claims to the region. They have embassies in the largest ports of each race and sometimes smuggle in arms and equipment to make profit off the constant squabbles and conflicts among the local powers. The other nations let this pass as the Hobbish embassies usually attract mercenaries and privateers from the Hobgoblin homeland who are more than happy to do their dirty work for a fair buck.

Thank you for making this thread possible, /tg/. I feel proud to have been a part of it. But either way, I think we have a great basis for a setting here, and while fa/tg/uys will often find themselves in a hubbub over trying to squeeze every single fantasy staple into such settings, I feel what we have here so far is well in all enough for the purpose of this thread.

Dwarves — Jamaican-esque volcano miners. Still very dwarfy.
    Elves — Brown toned, Hawaiian-esque happy-go-lucky and laid-back islanders.
Humans — Colonial English and pirate analogs.
Gnomes — Colonial French analogs. Big on trade.
Halflings — Rational, pint-sized cannibals. Enough said.
Merfolk — Manic, territorial ocean dwellers. Often at ends with both elves and dwarves. Feel threatened by almost everyone.
Orcs — Spanish conquistadors. Yes, this is awesome. Half-orcs = Mexicans; mind = blown.
Lizardmen — Ineffectual lazy surfer analogs that love to sunbathe. Komodo dragon like in appearance.

Tiki warforged and Dutch goblins are also other worthy mentions.
