The DP9 games are cool, high-realism games based around a common engine (Silhouette)

Heavy Gear is about a planet called Terra Nova, where two big alliances fight each other as well as the Terran imperialists that want to take over their colony. The iconic unit is the 'gear', fast attack humanoid vehicles, which although cool as hell are not the dominating battle machine in the setting - tanks will eat them for dinner unless they can get the drop on them, frex.

Gear Krieg is WW2 with walker tanks, basically. There's a little more pulp superscience, but it's still WW2 - and people die just as easily.

Jovian Chronicles has a Gundam-like setting where Earth is trying to take back its colonies in the Solar System. The main force opposing them is the Jovian Confederacy, creators of the exo-armors - humanoid space fighters. It has some serious hard science hidden behind the fightan robots and their plasma sabers, actually.

As for Mekton Z, it's a generic mecha RPG/wargame, supposedly able to model and run anything from low-key power armors (the official VOTOMS RPG runs on Mekton, frex) to full-on super robots of massive destruction like Gunbuster.

I've got a couple 2nd edition Heavy Gear books lying around somewhere. Love the setting and the system but I haven't actually had a chance to play it. Course, the vehicle design system takes the fun out of allocating slots and tons, etc. by assuming if you've got the money the engineers can make it work, but that's a more realistic system anyway.

Op, I don't know if you're after a different aesthetic, or a different playstyle.

If you just want simpler, Hell, just buy the clix game.

If you want a different aesthetic, the one with the next-largest following is Heavy Gear, followed by other Dream Pod 9 franchise stuff. Dreampod9 seems to be a company really focused on the anime-style robots.

After that, Reaper Miniatures is making a game now called C.A.V.
I haven't really seen much of a following for it, but it's out there, and I think it's got a nice aesthetic.

    >> Anonymous 06/02/09(Tue)21:46 No.4749388
your typical armored core might have some missiles, a laser gun, and either a blade or a second gun of some type. that kind of armament would only be found on a heavy or assault mech typically. medium and light mechs usually get stuck with something pathetic like 4 medium lasers and a lrm5.

an enemy mech can run right in front of you during its turn but as long as it ends out of range you can't shoot it. fucking stupid.

damage is way too luck based. you usually have to blow the armor off of 3-4 areas before you can destroy a mech just because of how random hit locations are. then since it takes so long to destroy all of the internal structure in one place you pretty much have to rely on critical hits to actually kill a mech anyway. the entire concept of a "zombie" design is retarded.
    >> Anonymous 06/02/09(Tue)23:53 No.4750491
Hey Anons. I'd like something fast-paced and relatively simple and customizable. I'd like to run a mecha game for RPG noobs. So far one of them managed to wrap his weaboo head around d20 and 2ed D&D, but I don't think they'll be able to handle anything more complex just yet. I considered d20 Future, but it's...well, it's d20.
    >> Anonymous 06/02/09(Tue)23:58 No.4750532
The likelyhood of that ever happening is pretty low...

For starters, a significant number [possibly even everything but the small lasers] of weapons can reach out to 12 hexes. There are exceedingly few mechs that can run this far to begin with. Nevermind that a mech which moves 10+ hexes is extremely hard to hit even when you can shoot it with everything at close range.

    >damage is way too luck based. you usually have to blow the armor off of 3-4 areas before you can destroy a mech just because of how random hit locations are. then since it takes so long to destroy all of the internal structure in one place you pretty much have to rely on critical hits to actually kill a mech anyway. the entire concept of a "zombie" design is retarded.

Mekton Z is pretty fucking bad-ass, but the GM needs to be very careful about allowing the players to custom build their mechs. Shit can get seriously fucking broken, very fast.

If you're looking for something fast and easy to run a giant robot game, look at Cortex (the system from the Serenity rpg). It has some of the best vehicle rules I've seen in a long time, and it's pretty flexible. Vehicles are generated just like characters (even use the same stats), and there are rules (well, guidelines) for bullshitting new gear if it isn't in there already.
Not detailed, or realistic, but if you're looking for something that scales well, doesn't bog down in vehicle combat, is fast to play, and easy to learn, you could do a whole lot worse.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)01:24 No.4751181
so is there nothing with more techincal construction and gameplay?
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)01:30 No.4751218

Well, yeah, the aforementioned Mekton Z. Just remember that technical construction isn't easy for players to learn, and open to horrible abuse.

Otherwise, take a look at Cthulhutech. I find the system too slow, but it's simple enough to learn, and the scaling is handled pretty well. The component failure rules for vehicles are really good (at certain damage levels stuff stops working, so some weapons are really powerful, but easy to disable, same with certain gear options).
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)01:37 No.4751247
Although it's pretty plain to see that OP isn't going to go back to battletech, I'm just going to make my own statements.

    >an enemy mech can run right in front of you during its turn but as long as it ends out of range you can't shoot it. fucking stupid.

Different ranges for different guns, It doesn't make sense to me to be able to hit a target 500 meters out with an automatic pistol, or with a flamethrower from 3 kilometers away, but...
Tactical Operations, Page 85 - LOS Range: 1 hex after extreme range, extends to limits of entire playing area, regardless of how large. +8 Modifier to hit. See for further info on restrictions.

    >range also includes firing arcs. I've had tons of situations where some fag would run his mech past me and end somewhere my main weapon can't hit even with twisting.

...So your opponent got behind you because you either lost initiative or made a critical mistake? I really don't think that's a flaw in the game at all.

    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)01:37 No.4751254
for some reason I thought mekton was more of a roleplaying game than a wargame. is that not the case?
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)01:40 No.4751271
It is a roleplaying game, but the construction system in the Advanced Technical Manual is robust enough to make a Mecha Fighting League a viable alternative.
Be warned; math skills required, expect to spend an hour or so building a mech once you understand the system (closer to two or three for your first few).
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)01:42 No.4751281
I think you misunderstand. it's ridiculous that an enemy can run right in front of you and not be targetable just because it ended its turn behind you. it's even worse when players have uneven numbers of units.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)01:46 No.4751300

    >damage is way too luck based. you usually have to blow the armor off of 3-4 areas before you can destroy a mech just because of how random hit locations are. then since it takes so long to destroy all of the internal structure in one place you pretty much have to rely on critical hits to actually kill a mech anyway. the entire concept of a "zombie" design is retarded.

Personally, I think the concept is pretty awesome. Having the designs become less and less effective really gives a sense of desperation. Especially when you have that one atlas not quite dead, but with one leg, forcing itself upright with one arm.... A light 'mech with naught but a single small laser to defend itself... A Rifleman whose engine is running so hot that you have to shut down every third turn to avoid overheating...

    >you can only make targeted shots if the enemy is knocked down or if you have a targeting computer.

... That's the only one I can agree with you on... but I figure the to-hit numbers would be modified by so much that nobody would bother using them, anyhow.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)01:50 No.4751332
I think that's going to be the case for most any miniatures game or wargame. RPGs not so much, but only because it's played with copious amounts of handwavium administered directly by the DM

...but hell, other wargames have it MUCH worse. Look at 40K... If you win initiative, your turn is completely seperate from your opponent, meaning that whoever gets first blood gets an automatic advantage over the opponent, because that's one less unit that even gets to shoot. The benefit to this is a faster game overall, but that's often balanced out by the sheer number of units added to the playing field.

Also, see Page 86 Tacops. Opportunity Fire and Opportunity fire: Firing on the Move.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)02:04 No.4751431
the problem is the phases are set up to make it seem like everything is happening at once, only it doesn't end up working that way at all. instead of initiative giving you the advantage of shooting first like you think it would, it allows you to run around trying to prevent the enemy from getting to shoot at you.

if you could move and shoot in order like in basically every other strategy game you wouldn't have this kind of problem.

Your reasons for disliking the game are mostly integral parts of a traditional game. That, or things that would be even worse balanced than had it been done otherwise.

I think what you're looking for is a video game, to be frank. All /tg/ style boardgames are turnbased, and will have their own restrictions on realism as such before the game gets ludicrously bogged down. If you're trying to find an RTS boardgame, you're pretty much dead in the water. It's just the nature of the beast.

Savage Worlds doesn't cover giant robot combat that well. Unless you just say "Different scale entirely". Rolling 1d12+20 would be just weird.

I think the main thing the OP wants is a system with held actions/overwatch and called shots.

Now on the subject of Mekton Zeta:

If you just use the basic Mek construction rules in Mekton Zeta than building a mecha is simple. When people say "Building a Mekton mecha is complicated" they're actually referring to Mekton Zeta+. If you do use Mekton Zeta I'd suggest creating a bunch of barebones frames and premade weaponry and letting your players go shopping. If you want to convert it to a tabletop, your best bet is probably applying the "crew rating" multiplier for starships to individual mecha and then letting players shift two or three points between individual skills.

The problem that people have with Mekton Zeta+ is the same problem with people playing D&D 3.5 with full supplements. The GM is actually supposed to write a campaign sheet outlining just what is allowed from the guide and so on. Helps to avoid cheap abuse like ludicrous speed aerofighters and nuke remotes.

Alright, I can see that. It's kinda like any build system anywhere. Zeta runs on the principle that too much freedom allows for Pun-Pun like breakages. Zeta+ allows people to go hog wild, but can also be set up so that its much easier to manage by building equipment and letting your players chose from the list.

Joshua O'Brien is the original White Glint pilot, you kill him in the final mission of AC4. Later, your character takes up his mantle - piloting White Glint in 4A - for unspecified reasons.

    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)06:42 No.4753444

You fight ALONGSIDE O'Brien against the Sol Dios in 4 (and in the Hard version of the level have to clean up his mess when he gets his ass kicked). It can't be the same character, obviously.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)06:42 No.4753445
She's the ONLY person who ever refers to White Glint as male in the ENTIRE GAME. Which is attributed to a translation error.

On the other hand, the Order matches refer to White Glint's unknown pilot at "she" all the time. There's quite a bit of evidence suggesting Fiona is just obfuscating because she doesn't want people to know.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)06:43 No.4753452
    From wikipedia:
    " *

    * Fiona Jarnefeldt: Fiona Jarnefeldt is White Glint's operator. She and the protagonist of Armored Core 4 left Anatolia and became part of Line Ark in the Armored Core for Answer storyline. She is accused by Otsdarva of being responsible for "Anatolia's downfall."

    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)06:46 No.4753468

Possibly true on the translation error. I still don't think Fiona pilots White Glint though, but speaks for the actual pilot so that said pilot can remain whatever the hell the player imagined their AC4 character to be.

And then, of course, there's the theory that the pilot in AC4A is Nineball...
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)06:46 No.4753469
ya know, it always pissed me off about 4A, the one corp that had the coolest looking mechs.... is the one that didn't make it into the game. Unless you play an independent. Then you get one of their mechs to start with.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)06:50 No.4753488

Rayleonard? They got blown the fuck up in the Lynx War (by the player/White Glint no less), so it's kinda understandable they're not in the League, or producing new Nexts.

    And right above it:

Unknown Lynx: The pilot of White Glint is silent and the pilot's identity remains unknown, but is hinted to be the protagonist of Armored Core 4. The official Armored Core for Answer website refers to the pilot as "she," and also explains that she is the Rank 9 and took down an entire company solo during the Lynx War. Also, in the Ordered match text, White Glint is referred to as "she." However, the LYNX is referred to as "he" by Fiona. This, understandably, has led to conflict over the gender of White Glint's LYNX. Most sources attribute this to a translation error. During the gameplay of Armored Core 4, the player is responsible for destroying the companies Rayleonard and the Bernard and Felix Foundation (BFF), although the latter returns to full size after receiving support from GA. It is noteworthy that a Next named "White Glint" appeared in the Armored Core 4, piloted by Joshua O'Brien. Many refer the pilot as "he", when in fact they are talking about the NEXT. It is also worth noting that Algebra was first named Eqbal.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)06:50 No.4753491
Personally, I just go with the more awesome option. Which is more awesome? Mister Faceless McRandom, or Fiona fucking Jarnefeldt. I just like the idea that everyone else who's piloted this damn thing has ended up dead and she's moonlighting while taking none of the glory for herself.

Rayleonard sucks. I built a boost-spamming speed freak out of the Type-LANCET and some Ekhazar parts that can carry four fucking chainguns and a pair of pistols and STILL dodge anything.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)06:51 No.4753494

    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)06:52 No.4753503

So while the gender of White Glint's pilot is ambiguous (again likely to allow the player to insert their own imagined version of the player character in AC4), Fiona's the operator/support, not the pilot herself.

/tg/, I first encountered Armored Core when it came out on the Play Station all those years ago. It was the third game I owned, after Micro Machines and Final Fantasy 7. Every single other gamer where I lived had no idea what it was, but it was my favorite game, and I would play it for hours on end. I purchased Armored Core 2 for the PS2 the moment I found out about it, and when I asked about it at EB games the guy behind the counter had to look it up on his computer, saying he had never even heard of it. When I proudly told my friends I'd bought it over the weekend they had no idea what game I was talking about.

I fell out of touch with the series as the years went on, but I still wistfully remembered those glorious days of tuning together the perfect mid-weight AC with rockets to deal with slow moving powerful threats, a machine gun for lighter targets, and missiles for faster threats.

Then I saw AC 4, mere days after I had purchased a PS3. This was not coincidence, this was divine providence. I bought it, I finished it, I replayed it, I tuned NEXT after NEXT after NEXT. I created dozens of designs created for specialised missions with aesthetics coming a close second. I triumphantly told my friends.

"Armored Core? What's that?" came the heartbreaking response. In the years that passed, my beloved franchise still had not achieved the respect it deserved. I continued on, breaking For Answer over the knee of my NEXT, cracking White Glint like a a toothpick, causing millions of deaths, saving the world, all the while knowing this incredible combat would never be as appreciated as it should be.

Then I come on here, today, and I see this.

Thank you, /tg/, thank you. Shine on, you blinding, geeky suns.

    Fair enough.

Gears of War is also good for that.

May Greenfield and Fiona Jarnefeldt? Illicit liaison? Massive opportunity for romantic DRAMA? Sounds like a pretty fucking awesome movie to me.

I don't matchfight because for some reason the game insists I don't have the correct permissions to download the latest license version or whatever.

    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)08:07 No.4753845
    Should work fine.

You may want to use the "lite" rules linked in >>4748554, though, in which case I'll start statting out some NEXTs.

If you want to start from scratch, that should be fairly easy as the stats are visible in the video game itself. You just need to figure out how to play out the game such that all those things matter, like heat and shit.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)08:08 No.4753852
You could start with a couple of the simpler ones maybe? I'd like to see the Type-LANCEL or GA's SUNSHINE.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)08:10 No.4753866
    >It is me!

The stats in the game are astronomically complex. Which is understandable, since it's a video game so the console can calculate everything on the fly for a much more realistic simulation. You'd have to abstract those down quite a lot to make a PnP game even remotely comprehensible.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)08:12 No.4753876

Regardless, it's still there and you can work with it.

Weight is easy to pull into PnP. Heat can be your "Action Points". Then all the other shit can be messed with accordingly.

I don't have access to my PS2 so I can't load up silent line for all of the stats present in THAT game, so... sorry, I'm not that helpful.

Looks like someone has a stick up their ass.

Tac Ops will solve your fucking problems, all of them.

And yes, shooting is luck based. That's because in real life, attempting to hit specific locations on an enemy in such a situation would be all about luck.

Fuck, if you could aim easily, all anyone would do is go for is head shots.

I'm sorry you have some sort of misguided belief that a man can take a calm, clean shot in the middle of a raging battle while he's running to avoid fire and taking said fire, but your ignorance isn't really excusable.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)08:27 No.4753932
Every other strategy game has fucking stupid movement rules.

One side moves, other side moves is just fucking terrible. There's no reaction at all, no ability to actually adjust your tactics to the flow of the battle.

If I were to table-top up this sucker, I'd have the rules for designing your own AC separate from the actual tabletop rules. The Design rules would be for NEXTs only, of course, so the common enemies like MTs and Normals would be pretty easy to make.

Hmm... I'm gonna think about this for a day or two.

Is it just me or does the LANCEL's starting loadout suck ass?
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)10:17 No.4754475

    That's no starting loadout, boy!

Those are White Glint's rifles (so they don't suck) and the upgraded DEARBORN is like a lower-budget and lighter BIGSIOUX.

It's not optimal, I'll admit. But it is workable and if this is going to be a ttg you need some workable stuff and some hax stuff.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/09(Wed)10:51 No.4754604
    >Glint's rifles

    Glint's loadout was:
    1x 051ANNR Rifle
    1x 063ANAR Assault Rifle
    2x SALINE05 back-mounted spread missile

PS: I'm blind, I missed the "2x rifles" so I thought you had only one.

Wait...okay I'm just confused now. Ignore this post.
