    18 KB We're Making A Setting Anonymous 06/15/09(Mon)14:25 No.4889030
ITT /tg/ collectively creates a setting without 1 person fagging it up by stealing the spotlight whenever they get the chance. The rules are simple -- each poster can contribute 1 thing to the setting, be it a race, location, bit of mythology, etc. and then they cannot contribute anything else to the thread. No user contribution can be longer than the fixed post length of 4chan.

    I'll start.

Humans are not the dominant species, nor are they the most widespread. They live on the margins of the dominant species society, occasionally hunted for food or taken as sacrifice for their gods.

People travel aboard enormous pirate ships. Giant pirate ships that travel through time by riding the soundwaves of harpsichord music; the best captains are the best harpsichordists who can compose symphonies on the fly to navigate even the greatest of spacial and temporal dangers.

singing is also encouraged among the crews to improve efficiency and better acclimatize the men to the rigors of harpsichordwave travel.

A human-kobold alliance, confined by necessity in their airships and caverns deep within the world's larger floating islands, are working on a form of portal transport that utilizes two synchronized Armonicas playing a very specific note. The work is promising, but must be kept from the orcs at all costs. The resonance of the note can be felt for miles, even though the note itself is very soft, so tests must be conducted quickly, with all equipment and researchers being evacuated in less than an hour, for fear of discovery.

Gather round, children, and I will tell you a tale of a greedy man who gave us all a great gift.

"This is the story of a time long ago, when the ancient gods were petty and cruel. They warred with each other constantly, and many mortals suffered and died in their name, or as collateral damage. One man, a necromantic scholar and hermit, grew furious. While the constant supernatural battles provided him a surplus of unskilled labor, in the form of zombies, it decimated the local economies when all the skilled farmers, metalworkers, and herbalists in the area had been turned to ash. Delving into necromantic lore, this man, one Luther Hapscomb, desperately sought a way to protect the mortals he needed to maintain his standard of living. After a particularly brutal battle between demigods, Luther left his hovel to scavenge what he could. He found a divine lieutenant, a demigod named Thorn, wounded and unconscious. Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, Luther immediately fell upon the senseless demigod and, though the might of his magics, bound Thorn's soul into a gem. He re-animated a small cluster of zombies to carry Thorn's corpse back to his hovel to work unimpeded."

"Three years later, Luther emerged from his hovel, changed. His hair was pale white, and his body, formerly in the healthy years of his fourth decade, now looked dessicated and ancient. Though his heart still beat, his eyes bespoke a terrible knowledge no mortal should know. Luther had learned the Word of Unmaking. A secret weapon the gods held very dear. Luther's research into the nature of souls both mortal and divine, had taught him the one thing the gods wanted no mortal to know. How to kill them. Luther, withered but determined, shouted a defiance to the heavens in the language of the gods. His magics carried him aloft, where he was met by divine messengers. He slew them outright. Single-handedly he stormed the gates of the heavens, slaying even the guardian god who stood at his post. He then held the gods hostage, forcing them, upon pain of death, to sign a binding compact that no divine agent would be allowed to interfere in the world of mortals unless specifically invited by a mortal. This contract was signed and sealed with Luther's own soul, and to this day no god or power may enter or affect our world without a willing conduit. In this way did Luther give us all our freedom from the tyranny of uncontrolled gods."

The colossus monster emerged from the sea and faced the townsfolk. They turned to their village elder.

"What do we do?" they cried. "How will we stop it?"

And the old man stood up and started to speak.

"There is only one song that can stop the incoming apocalypse. Only one song with the pure power to halt the monster.

"It lives in us all. A tiny echo of it can be heard in every song ever written, some more than others.

"It will only be sung once; it will be remembered forever."

The little girl walked up to the old man and tugged at his jacket. She asked not but a single question.

"But elder, what kind of music is able to stop a monster so large and terrible?"

The old man looked at the little girl and turned to the monster.

With a voice that ached with a hundred years of waiting for this moment, and a stare that penetrated the dawn, he whispered, "Disco."

The orcs are actually incredibly technologically advanced. The key to their success, like the Romans and Incans, were roads. As time passed, those roads became populated with trains. While the ships are powered by song, the trains are powered by blood sacrifices. Short routine trips can appease the dark train gods/spirits with a boar or a goat. Longer ones need sentient races. They prefer individuals who've sinned against their gods--like homosexual elves.

Dwarves have managed to hammer music down to a science, forging machines that they can program to take them through the world.

Because their routes are preprogrammed to a certain extent, they will never be as manuverable as elf or human ships. They can't improvise, so they can't duck and weave. They have to concentrate on ultimate defense, because they can't maintain any kind of stealth.

So, the Dwarves emerged from their laboratories three years ago and started to take over the lands near to their islands. Instead of the delicate ships of the elves, they fly massive floating castles thumping techno harpsichord and boasting experimental giant railguns to take out enemy fortifications.

Dwarves have their vast Techno-Castle ships & Elves have their Broadway Boats.

Few can top the speed of the Gnomish Rap Cruisers though.

Because no race can crossbred with any other, sex shops where you can lay other races are socially acceptable and rules or other powerful persons often have stables of concubines of assorted races (other than there own). Giving well trained concubines is common among the well to do. Only Orcs avoid this practice, using only halflings for this and never sharing.

Why would any Orc want to pollute themselves by associating with one of the Fuel races? Every Orc knows that non-Orcs are only good for making the trains run on time.

The Illumiats are giant beings that saturate the cloudsea. Their bodies give off a bright light that makes it difficult to distinguish their figures, but studies show they have smooth ovoid bodies with large fins. They subsist on specific vapors in the cloudsea. The Illumiats are capable of extinguishing their light, and must do so when the Harvesters come.

No one knows what the Harvesters look like, but they always come at a particular time every 18 hours and continue to pass by for 9 hours. They make no sound but the soft beating of their wings. They have no senses except for sight (not even touch or proprioception), but viciously attack anything they can see.

The shining of the Illumiats and their extinguishing in the face of the Harvesters creates a day-night cycle. All sentient beings know to douse their artificial light (or at least contain it where it isn't visible to the outside) at night.

The Havesters are magical beings that emits a magical aura of darkness that absorbs all incomming light and emmits none. This arua helps them to attack only prey and not each other. Darkvision cannot piece thier aura.
