What does it draw sustenance from? I say that it is a carnivorous type of plant. It can only receive it's nutrients from meat. It needs about one 3 pounds of meat every 10 days. Only minimal water is ever required, like a cactus. Sunlight is almost a must though.

Metabolism is variable and depends on the amount of sunlight received. A lot of sunlight makes it fast. If it doesn't receive much sunlight over a few days, it gradually slows down, like a reptile.

I'm currently envisioning a vine-like race. they cultivate themselves in durable pots, grow up a skeleton-like lattice work, eventually take to a second pot, and use those as feet. Once they reach maturity, two flowers bloom on their "face", to appear similar to eyes. This came about as a defensive mechanism, to appear more like humans/humanoids to scare off potential predators

It would start its life cycle with just a carnivorous plant, then is then effected by a parasite that changes the plant to abandon its root structure and increases sensory capabilities. Then the next plant to join, sustained by the blood left by the base plant, is a swamp plant that encases dying animals in quickly growing tough leaves. This would create a "skin" for the creature.

I think we should avoid the whole "two arms, two legs, one head" thing. It should remain as plant like as possible.

I'm thinking that instead of just "eyes," it uses a cluster of specialized circular leaves that can detect light in a very primitive and simple manner. It then relies on small pits in it's body to detect heat, and specialized leaf spines to detect slight movement.

The plant has no permanent root system. It has powerful tendrils with which is performs locomotion, which can be used as a fairly bad root system, but the plant being prefers to remove other plants from their roots and graft themselves to it instead.

Fungi do not photosynthesize (except for maybe a couple of obscure ones I've never heard of), so competition for resources is unlikely.

Maybe the fungi are parasites, who use plants as hosts for their young. Since these are mobile, intelligent fungi, we can have them be parasitoids, attached to host plants for the early part of their life cycle before they chestburst out and become independent.

First Thread: Phylum (Vertebrae, Invertebrae, Mollusc, etc)
Second Thread: Class (subspecies - for the mooluscs, it was gastropoda, cephalopoda, bivalvia, etc)
Third Thread: Biology - how they function particular, what their manipulators are, their general shape, etc. All of the physical particulars.
Forth Thread: Based on their biology, design a culture for the creatures.
Fifth Thread and onwards: Refining the species until it's something sensible and logical.
