Alright /TG/, I'm running a Shadowrun 4E game loosly following the plot of The Running Man movie and book. Any suggestions of how it should be done and random encounters?
    >> 008 06/23/09(Tue)20:45 No.4976492
I was going to have the chasers be themed out. These are the guys chasing the runners to kill them on live trid as public entertainment.

A physad dressed like a space marine
A hacker/rigger done up GITS style
A sword wielding mage pretending to be a jedi

    And that's it so far.

Nothing constructive, but keep it up.

Duke Nukem, a weapon spec? A gunner?

    Anyways

The runners will be black bagged at start and awaken in their contestant jumpsuit plastered with ads (Urban explorer jumpsuit) and given each a knife and 1000 nuyen. They will be released at night in the outskirts of NewYork and must survive 3 weeks on the run while the chasers give chase individually with the intent to kill them. Like the book version, the runners must call up the channel once a day to report in. The winner(s) gets a fabulous cash prize that will leave them in high luxury for the rest of their life and their records cleaned. To get caught is to die on live trid. Of course fans of the show will be on the streets to help and hinder.
    >> 008 06/23/09(Tue)21:38 No.4976957
Chasers get corporate/mil gear modified for their theme including helicopters.

As there is a huge continent wide gambling for the show, betting on if the runners make it, which ones make it, which chaser will get the first kill, which chasers won't make it and so on, meanwhile a huge studio audience and gameshow host narrates the whole thing as in the movie.

The only problem is that Mages are going to slaughter everything. Fuck, I play a Mystic Adept who can rape your average street sammy at the moment and he'd turn around and slaughter everything short of a full SWAT team or a DPI kill squad - maybe even then if he got the drop on them.

Physads suck in 4e. I'm sorry, they do. The rigger? Good. Everyone loves Steel Lynxes. And the mage.. less so. Either make him suboptimal or make him a boss character.

    >A dragon. Yes, a dragon.

Are you eventually going to have the players try to escape and take down the game permanently? If so, perhaps the benefactor and secret runner of the games is a great dragon. He/she uses the Game to make money through the heavy betting and the sponserships and ads. Once the players threaten to bring down the game and ruin everything by actually winning (for real), the dragon will serve as the final boss that stands between them and a jet out of the country.

    >> Anonymous 06/23/09(Tue)23:52 No.4978345
Oh, wow. I just had an interesting idea. Break the competition into smaller areas, perhaps themed, with an advertised "escape area".The PCs have to fight their way there, on the run from the chasers, but are forced into a final confrontation just before their escape. Then, when they've killed their foes and appear to be on the verge of escaping... Sleeping gas starts pouring out of vents from *everywhere*. The PCs wake up at the start of an entirely new sector, new theme, new chaser. Do this a couple of times before allowing the PCs to find a way to prevent being knocked out by the gas and make some sort of escape attempt.
    Whatcha think?

Are you going to make this game high lethality or do you plan on keeping the players alive to see it completely through?

Also, make sure to add in NPCs. Perhaps civilians who snuck into the area to get a better look, or maybe other contestants who went in before or after the group. There could be "side quests" in each area. Some objective that the players need to accomplish besides "survive the area" or "kill the chaser"

Maybe some chasers are invulnerable until the players find an item or pick up a proper weapon or piece of armor to defend themselves, like ceramic armor that can withstand the cuts of a chaser using monofilament weapons. Maybe the players might need a key to get inside a building where some bonus money and/or weapons are hidden.

Also, if the players have a sponsor, maybe the sponsor spices things up by helping the players survive. (The players are sponsored by Ares and an Ares chopper airdrops a crate of Ares brand weaponry. The weaponry has T.A.G.S. on it to deactivate the weapon if the players try to leave the game or move on to the next zone. Maybe Yamaha will have some motorcycles waiting so that the players can properly combat the go-gang that has been let loose on the nearby highway.)
    >> 008 06/24/09(Wed)00:12 No.4978544
Medium Lethality, meaning I'm not going to coddle the players but I'm not going to be overly sadistic with them either in encounter wise.

Yes, I've got to work Dynamo in there. Also possibly a disenfranchised Captain Freedom.

Mmm. I've been hoping to break into Shadowrun. I might have to steal this as an intro game for my players. :D

What other sorts of ideas are you after, 008? More chasers/themes, or general ideas?
    >> Strengths and weakness Anonymous 06/24/09(Wed)00:33 No.4978765
Lots of good ideas in this thread, and I want to try to expand on the encounters to make them unique. One of the bonus rounds in each area could be a chance to win a clue to surviving an encounter with the chaser.

    >A small coven of elven mages

The players could be given a crude map of magic null zones around the area that will severely weaken magic users.

    >A troop of militant kobolds

The players could be given a clue as to where the kobolds keep their weapons stash in the area. If the players can get to it and destroy it before the kobolds are released in the area, the players will have an easier time surviving.

    >The weaponry has RFID tags on it to deactivate the weapon if the players try to leave the game or move on to the next zone

The players will be given a Tag Eraser to nullify the tag on one weapon so they may take it with them to the next area without it malfunctioning as usual.

Mainly inspiration for things to do.

I only need a limited amount of themed chasers, maybe 10 or so with random minions, possibly theme gangs occupying an area. Trid would be recorded via emplaced cameras, satalight imaging and once they break out, broadcast from street and building security cams and hacked cybersystems similar to the MeFeeds in Manhattan (With the studio offering handfuls of nuyen to anyone who finds them and can broadcast a live feed from the streets.) along with their highly trained stealth ninja camera men.

And once the players start showing that they are a force to be reckoned with by killing a few chasers, the players will start to gain more and more sponsors. Companies who are making good money by betting on the players instead of the chasers, and want to keep that winning streak going by helping them out. As the players stay alive longer, sponsors will start to drop off more and more stuff to them to keep them alive and turn the tables on the game. The Game owners will probably frown on it, but since they need their sponsors to fund the game, they wont do shit to stop them, instead they will try to sway the sponsors back to their side by sending out more dangerous stuff to kill the players and prove once and for all where the money is at.

Perhaps the sponsors,at some point will hide a secret stash of earpieces for the players so that they can contact them directly and help them to win.

Of course, that may go south once the Game owner(s) and the sponsors find out that the players are seeking to not win, but to escape and destroy the game.

Do you have a BBEG yet? I kinda like the idea of the players facing a dragon, or even a Great Dragon as the final boss like >>4978253 mentioned. Dragons are so insanely dangerous that I think it would make a suitable final conflict.

Also, if you are looking for an ending, perhaps if the players decide to turn down the BBEG's offer and not become chasers for the next season, instead really wanting to put an end to the game, they can kill the BBEG, and escape through the final exit. The Game will be forced to award their prize money (and not be charged with murder of the BBEG since he/she entered the game and was considered a participant). The players can use their prize money to buy out the now financially decrepit Game, and tear it down for good.

Or prep it for the next season, this is Shadowrun.

Yeah, the BBEG will probably be a great dragon with the host possibly a Drake.

Even if the PC's done make it through though, I think this would be good houserule fluff to have in the background complete with annoying fans and posers flooding the streets.

Am I the only one who feels a bit uneasy about the concept of deathsports? Don't mean to sound like a newfag, but I hope I never live to see the day when it is socially acceptable to kill real people for public amusement. If the players decide to become chasers, I can only imagine the nasty types of participants that will join the Games, hoping to gain fame and nuyen from defeating the players who were the first to defeat the Games. Perhaps the sponsors will continue to keep things interesting, by giving their aid to the enemy. The players will continue to make money by putting on a good show. Though the show will be only a small worry compared to the new brand of psychos that the sponsors supply for the Game. Murders, sadists, ex military, ex Tir Na Nog Ghosts, the works, all for the sake of keeping things fresh for the ratings.
Perhaps the Sponsors will even try their new projects against the now famous chasers (pic related).

Assuming this will take place in just some random sprawl right?

A Nuked-out abandoned city would make a good staging area for this. The place could be crawling with ghoul squatters and radiation-mutated critters. The players could be unaware of this until they notice that one of the chasers is sporting a Geiger counter. High rad spots could be another hazard for them to contend with.

Also, there will be a sardonic announcer that constantly mocks their predicament right? Eventually the players will get their handso n this guy, yes?
