I think the main problem was not the character having no backstory but it being lackluster; further, the quest itself was not very well developed and lacked structure. The point being, if you want to run something like Dorfquest, run it like Dorfquest. If you want plot and structure, actually put some in.

The problem with moonleaf was that it lacked direction. Ruby quest had clear areas of interaction and we knew where we could and couldnt go at any given point. We had an objective and loosly assumed there was a sequence of actions which could bring about said objective. We had a goal in moonleaf, but didnt really know what to do to actually achieve it. You introduce Xom and we all asume Xom has something to do with what we aught to be doing, so we all went after the cane. You have to lead us just as much as we have to tell the character what to do. Don't railroad it, just... DM it.
