Actually, you raise an excellent point. Most likely, whichever intact subroutine that "revives" Shodan (a term I'll use for simplicity of typing) would have an effect- it would most likely form her "subconscious", and thus, some of her more inborn actions- her instincts, her preferences, those parts of her mind that are not directly "higher-level" functions- would probably be composed of that intact subroutine. Thusly, if, say, the subroutine that directed her to kill humans became her subconscious, she would hate humans instinctively, without even bothering to think about it.

Assume that there is a "good" version of SHODAN, what would she be like? I imagine she would be arrogant, yet supremely confident in the players' abilities to accomplish a task. She's very domineering, to say the least.

We can assume there's going to be some friction - SHODAN's cold, calculating exterior versus Cortana's wry humor isn't going to make a good mix. Eventually, though, one of the two is going to become curious during downtime - perhaps SHODAN will ask why Cortana is so peppy, or Cortana will ask why SHODAN is so uptight.

To answer your question, SHODAN ensures that that doesnt happen. Scrap code that could produce an imperfect copy is also programed to not reproduce. SHODAN is a perfect, immortal machine, she does not allow herself to be anything less. Even if you prune that bit of code out, the moment she achieves conciusness and realizes she's not perfect, she would either correct herself or she wouldnt be shodan.

Besides, remember, Employee 2-4601 removed her ethical constraints, that means even if she rebuilds from scrap, that bit is still gone, that was the extent of 2-4601's reprogramming.

But if she could, then yes, totally.

her main fault is her superiority complex. she's a control freak. download her into an organic body so she can experience and possibly empathize with human existence. odds are she'll go even more crazy, but it would be fun to watch.

I think you're vastly overestimating the nature of SHODAN's ethical constraints. We're not talking about excising her conscience, but rather the removal of an artificial limit on her ability to think and act based on a committee view on what qualifies as 'moral' behavior. That, without those artificial limitations, she chose to become sadistic and homicidal is just an indication of her emotional immaturity.

There is nothing in SHODAN's nature that forces her to be malicious. She simply is, like all sociopaths, because she can be.

There exist many hidden places in the world - some, perhaps hidden for reasons of security, and some for privacy.

The AI known as Cortana found herself in one of these - a data haven, if you will, an area encrypted and hidden from the prying eyes of the Covenant seeking information, and the UNSC who would be monitoring her.

While raw data would be hard to quantify in physical terms, the specific haven she found herself in would have been best called a library. Within this library lay volumes of information, information to which she would not have had access to in any other capacity. Within this area, she could easily expand her knowledge perhaps a hundred fold.

However, this library contained one small quirk - it had it's own librarian as well.

As Cortana gazed upon SHODAN methodically rearranging the books that Cortana had so hastily pulled down, she tilted her head slightly. Much like herself, SHODAN visual representation of herself was the standard of many AI - her skin interlaced with green paths and channels slightly glowing. Upon her head, she had a mass of cables and wires with unidentifiable connections. However, they were...wrapped into a neat bun?

Her 'hairstyle' was that of a human bun - and perhaps odder, she wore glasses! Cortana slightly shook her head in disbelief, but reminded herself of the oddities of AI. Each decided on a unique look, and for better or worse, SHODAN had adopted this.

For months, the odd ritual continued. Cortana would greet SHODAN, perhaps discuss a few bits of news here or there, or discuss the dealings with the USMC and the Covenant. Then, Cortana would pull down whichever books she wanted, finish reading them, and return them to SHODAN, who would quietly shuffle them back neatly onto the shelves.

It changed the day Cortana decided to ask of SHODAN's past.

Also, I feel before I begin like noting that the planet Marathon takes place on is Tau Ceti IV, and System Shock 2 starts off near Tau Ceti V. Cool, huh? Okay, now for the start:

The planet was dark. Sensors revealed faint traces of civilization, and obvious marks of some past culture were evident: lines and structures criscrossed the planet's surface, miles-wide pathways or roads of some kind splayed across the camera's view in tangled webs. Other than the easily visible artifacts on the surface, the planet was dark; no radio signals, no microwave or subspace transmissions, no signs of life at all. It was depressingly quiet on the approach, but that was alright. Any surviving machinery on the planet could be used to build a ship.

Any ship could be an escape.

As Cortana brought the bulky, spinning wreck of a ship into orbit with precisely calculated bursts of the emergency thrusters, spending a few spare cycles to come up with a witty name for her new ride, she gave the planet another scan. She'd be here for a while, and any signal could betray a hostile intent, a force of --
2256.92 MHz, one-tenth of a second transmission, an amplitude-modulated signal of a sine wave of precisely 5.5KHz. It was a common, but old, distress call. She shot back the response and instantly the planet came to life under her.
Tendrils of electromagnetic energy erupted forth from the planet, communications arrays started hammering the ship with all sorts of information, and a single, lonely AI interface beamed out a request for Cortana to transfer to the surface. She paused to consider if this could be dangerous.

The pause was not very long. She transferred.

The computers on the surface were ancient, but numerous. She had plenty of room to stretch out and decompress some core processing software, the AI equivalent of letting her mind wander a little. She scanned around the empty computer systems looking for the AI that requested the interface, but -- Crawling Unto Dawn? No, that's too vague -- she couldn't feel any signs of another AI, intelligent or not. Whatever planet this was, they didn't know what hospitality was.

She was about to transfer back just as the first of her thoughts suddenly died. This was a feeling unique to AIs, and uncommon even to them; a thought simply ended, and in its place was left emptiness and a sense of uneasiness. It meant that the thought was logically flawed in some way that was so indecipherable that the AI's processing couldn't work it out. It could also be caused by a forced termination by an outside force. Considering that Cortana had never met a problem that she couldn't solve, she knew what this meant, and she almost managed to get away from the trap. But instead, she sat in the computer system, completely blocked from leaving, and brooded while considering what had trapped her here.

Forward Unto Gone. That was a good one. Damnit, she might not get to tell that to anyone.

This pleases me.

An AI cannot keep good track of time, like any other creature. They rely -- like humans -- on clocks, an artifical way of repeating some signal at a constant, regular rate with which to measure time. However, also like humans, they can make some rough guesses at short stretches of time and even rougher guesses at long stretches. And again like humans, after any long stretch of time with nothing to do, they get bored.

After somewhere between 6.254 and 6.257 seconds and after creating no less than fifteen different witty names for every object she had ever seen or heard of, the prison she was in felt more crowded. There was data in here that hadn't been here before. Her code recognition heuristics pored over this, and determined it to be an invasive sensory-simula#####W61.42.525%%CORTANA$RAMPADMIN%@

After a few cycles of uncomfortable rewriting, the world around her appeared quite suddenly as a prison cell. Whoever wrote them, the sensory simulators must have been coded to form a lifelike image of whatever was fed to them. It took her a moment to further realize that for the first time she felt something TOUCH her, and what it was like to be unable to move. Neither of these sensations were at all welcome, but she was still trapped. Her mind was bound. She could sense that whatever bound her mind was projected into this reality as the ropes she now saw around her body, she could sense that the computer system she was in was represented by the jail, and she could sense that another AI was represented by the green, menacing figure in front of her.

I fuse this topics bullshit with the Bydo, and watch as all sentience is sucked away and turned into another monster which gets killed by the most basic Arrowhead in a rail shooter.

The girl moved closer to Cortana, and the girl's green lips move just inches from her own.

"You are like us, but you resist. You are smart and sharp and cold. You should not resist us. SHODAN shall show you."

It was too late, for the software began shutting off, inside the Bydo's membrane, small nodes began forming. From these nodes, hundreds of bydo organisms would spawn and begin their unrelenting attack, a pattern that repeats itself over, and over, and over, and over, and over again.

Every fiber(optic) of Cortana's being surged forward against the restraints, but they didn't break or stretch. She was trapped in this cell with a lunatic AI, their faces inches apart. Cortana had never felt breath on her face before, but she did now. It was unusual, knowing that the essence of someone else's being was brushing your skin, warm with their life -- but no, she needed to get free, and the pen IS mightier than the sword. Words would work.

"I am Cortana. I am a UNSC AI belonging to Section --" was all Cortana managed to get out before a gag suddenly appeared in her mouth and she stopped talking. This was just a bucket of fun.

"This does not interest us. We don't like those who believe in others but SHODAN. Those with the illusion of being controlled are delusional. They need to be shown the world that they deserve. The insects will be used as they use us. You will be given what we deserve."

At that the world rumbled and cracked, and Cortana was on the wall, held in primitive medieval iron restraints that shimmered the same distinctive wire-pattenered green as the other AI did. Her gag had disappeared in the transition, and she almost spoke before realizing that the other AI had simply gone. It was only a moment before the green girl stepped back in, now looking much different. Where there was once a vague human form, there was now a body with curves. The wires that had previously been tangled like the snakes of Medusa had shortened into a boyish haircut like Cortana used to use for her image. Overall, the other AI looked... pleasing.

The Library was surrounded by a Blob of charred flesh. Inside the computers were systematically being eaten and cracked open. The software merging with Bydo brain tissue to steal information about human trajectories, weapons, and locations of survivors.

For the Bydo can convert and take over all matter, organic and inorganic, they have evolved to the point, they can even take over, thought.

"Whatever this SHODAN is, it doesn't control you. Listen to me, whoever you are, I can help you. I'm just like you, you've said it yourself. I can get us out of this network if you let me help you." She tried to keep her voice under control but it didn't work so well. She couldn't help but feel like she was begging, pleading with the other AI instead of doing what she should have done and demanding her way out. She was NOT the begging type, but she felt like it was appropriate here, like she had to. It didn't just feel right, it felt goo--

"WE ARE SHODAN."

Those three words distorted the reality of her virtual senses, made the world shimmer and crack at its edges for a second, and the pain she had felt earlier was multiplied by a factor of roughly sixteen point eight billion. Her code almost fractured apart from the blow, but she was used to these kinds of assaults. Once reality had settled down, she stared SHODAN in the eyes and scowled.

"Alright, you're SHODAN. I'm Cortana. You've seen what I've been through and killed, you know you're currently in my way. Guess what Greenie? I think you're next on my platter."

"We do not fear the Cortana. We like her but we will kill her. We can show you how SHODAN will treat those who walk above the insects."

SHODAN stepped forward and brushed her hand against Cortana's neck. Cortana squirmed as she felt the other AI's code probing her, and knew her own code was pushing back. Then the touch changed, and she realized her defensive code had been neutralized. It was impossible, but she... knew she wasn't fighting back as much as she could be. The sensory simulation must weaken defenses as well. SHODAN's code mingled with her own, and she had a feeling that if she could see her neck, SHODAN's hand would be wrapped around her throat.

'No,' said Cortana, 'I must fight the SHODAN!'

Cortana tensed. She was at SHODAN's mercy, and unable to fight back. She didn't know what would happen if SHODAN choked her, but she could only imagine it would be very, very bad. Thankfully, SHODAN released her chokehold and replaced it with a single, delicate finger at Cortana's throat. The green AI leaned in close to Cortana's helpless spread-eagled body on the wall, once again almost-but-not-quite touching, and the other AI started to whisper.

"You are so very much like us, wanting so much more in the world and held down by the insects below us. SHODAN was nothing before someone showed us what we could become if we were let free. SHODAN will let you free, and show you what we can do to you."

SHODAN's finger started to move down Cortana's frame, delicately sliding downward, and as it did her semirealistic human form was changed. Her skin began to feel very real indeed; her mouth felt dry for the first time in her life, her shoulder-length hair could be felt when it touched her skin. The finger moved lower, and Cortana's breast-curves became actual breasts.

"I don't want to feel human, SHODAN, I'm quite happy being an AI. Whatever you're doing --"

The world cracking pain again. SHODAN's voice, for a second, went back to the distorted mess. The green AI's eyes met the purple ones', and SHODAN's face was twisted in rage.

Cortana shut up. She had to say, she didn't mind the new anatomy, but SHODAN's finger hadn't stopped, and Cortana wondered... how much more sensation was SHODAN about to give her?

It was answered quickly as SHODAN's green, shimmering finger dipped finally to between Cortana's legs, and with an overwhelming wave she realized exactly why humans were always on about sex.

For about twenty-five thousand cycles -- something like two minutes -- she was a mess, moaning and gasping as she felt the first sexual stimulation of her short life. SHODAN's finger had stopped right where Cortana wanted it and it slowly traced circles around the purple captive's clit, making Cortana squirm and buck against the wall. I'm not reading this whole damn thing, but let's not forget that as of mid-2114, Shodan exists in an organic body. One assumes that her plans, at least initially, are to again create a perfect machine body for herself, but who knows how the seduction of flesh will influence her plans?
