Hey /tg/ it's the guy making Pokemon: Tabletop Adventures

I've returned, as I swore I would, with updates. I'm here to answer questions about the progress and I'm willing to share with those of you interested.

I have but one humble request. I am currently doing the Pokemon Bestiary and I need all of the Ken Sugimori art from the japanese pokedex. Found here:
    http://www.pokemon.co.jp/whats/reference/zukan/index.html

I was wondering if there a collection that has already cropped all of the pokemon (without black backdrops), or if I will have to do it myself (and I will).

Anyway, I have made great leaps of progress towards completion, but I doubt I'll be done by the end of the year. I'm open to suggestions and I want to make this game the best I can so... topic.

    OP Here.

When I was here a month ago, meaningless death threats were made if I didn't return. I suppose people have lost interest. Once I'm done and I release on /tg/ I hope enough people will be on to grab it.

I'm intending to make separate condensed pdfs
    Pokemon: Tabletop Adventures Player's Guide
-This will have how to play rules. Complete with the basic Trainer Classes and feats for trainers.
Pokemon: Tabletop Adventures Advanced Player's Guide
    - This will have "Advanced" feats, similar to paragon paths, along with rules for other aspects of the game such as grooming for contests, cooking poffins and battling frontier brains.
    Pokemon: Tabletop Adventures Bestiary/Pokedex
    - This will be for player's use, for their pokemon. It will have an ability table and a complete attack listing.
    Pokemon: Tabletop Adventures GM Bestiary
    - This will be for the GM. There are things they get to know that players don't obviously.
Pokemon: Tabletop Adventures GM World Guide.
    - More rules, NPCs and world suggestions. Of course, in Pokemon: Tabletop Adventures, you can make your own regions.
    >> Anonymous 08/03/09(Mon)23:14 No.5330715
So how does it work? Unless you haven't figured out that yet.

And I can't help you with the non-black backdrop Pokemon pictures, sorry. I know the ones on Bulbapedia are with a white background but of course, they're not a collection.

    OP here.

I'm making a Pokemon Tabletop game. I've been working on it for 6 months now, I'm determined to complete it and make it a very good playable game. I have a group of friends who have been play testing it and enjoy it very much. After I am done, it will be released here, most likely uploaded on rapidshare or something, and then hopefully people will play it.

I think I was here for this one and I'm glad to see you back, this is one where you decided to convert the existing Pokemon stats from the games right? And had the world be set in a more err I guess realistic/Darker setting?

I forget did the old thread get archived? I'm hazy on what was discussed. How involved are trainers abilities going to be to sway the outcome of the battle? Did you keep the ambush/fighting dirty feats?

I'll try to sum it up at neatly as I can.
There are currently 7 trainer classes that you can take.
Ace Trainer, Breeder, Researcher, Capture Specialist, Coordinator, Psychic and Martial Artist.
They each play different roles in a traveling party.

You travel throughout whatever region you like and the GM provides wilds and NPC battles. Wild encounters are not one at a time. For example, a common encounter would be five pidgeys, two pigeottos, and one pigeot.

Players play through the game how ever they'd like and the GM provides challenges.

For example, my playtesters currently flew into Sinnoh to take on Galactic who had stolen Blaine's pokeflute loaned to Blaine from Mr. Fuji. They are slowly realizing the shit they've gotten themselves into and may be realizing they are in over their heads.

Players capture pokemon with pokeballs and use their trainer feats (with exclusive powers to each class) to make their pokemon better then their fellow party members, while still working together.
    >> Anonymous 08/03/09(Mon)23:24 No.5330806
How complete is it? Like, what percent of it is finished?

Works like any tabletop game, but with Pokémon. Game runs smoothly, players can specialize in doing pretty much whatever they like, receiving appropriate benefits from their first foot out the door.

Battles are rather intense, very easy to keep track of and visualize especially with a simple paper and counter system. Even Beauty Contests are pretty fun if done right, but don't quote me.

Basically, everything you -could- want is in the system, and anything that would be overly cumbersome and/or nonsensical to include (EV training) is absent for the better. If your players really want to min/max, they should just bring a DS and play.

The only slow sections are the gym battles, but they don't come up too often. Players will realize that strategy is an effective weapon and stop blindly challenging them.

The feeling is more realistic, but not necessarily darker.
Trainer abilities help to make a pokemon better, but rarely do anything during a battle. I will post a few examples in a bit.

I did. I've been doing so for a week now. Fuck off.

Here are some examples of a few classes and their starting feats.

    >Capture Specialist –
Prerequisites: 15 DEX, 15 INT, Poke Ball Tool Box (2,500)
Key Abilities: Dexterity, Intelligence Bonuses: +1 DEX +1 INT
Negligent Ability: Constitution Penalties: -2 CON
Class Features: Poke Ball Repair, Capture Point

    Poke Ball Repair: Class Feature
Daily – Every 5 levels gained, you may perform this Class Feature another time per day.
Target: Any Poke Ball that has failed to capture a pokemon and broke.
Effect: Roll d20 and add your DEX and INT modifiers to the roll. If the total exceeds 15, the Poke Ball is fixed and is treated as if it had not broken.

    Capture Point: Class Feature
    Static
Trigger: You throw a Poke Ball.
Effect: Subtract your DEX and INT modifiers from your d100 rolls when throwing any Poke Ball.

    >Ace Trainer –
    Prerequisites: 15 STR, 15 CON
Key Abilities: Strength, Constitution Bonuses: +1 STR +1 CON
Negligent Ability: Wisdom Penalties: -2 WIS
Class Features: Enhanced Training, Improved Attacks

    Enhanced Training: Class Feature
    Static
Trigger: Your pokemon gains experience points.
Effect: Each of your pokemon gains 1.5x the amount of experience they would gain normally. This replaces the amount of experience they would normally gain.

    Improved Attacks: Class Feature
    Static
Trigger: Your pokemon’s damage dealing attack hits.
Effect: When adding up damage dealt to the foe, add your STR and CON modifiers before your foes subtracts their defense or special defense from the attack.

This actualy sounds pretty cool I take players will be encoraged to have as few pokemon as possible even go through an entire campaign with just there starter. Because it sounds like the more time a player puts into a single pokemon the better it becomes.

So the goal isn't necisarly "catch them all" its "your my best budy now lets kickass"

    >>5330958
I have, but they aren't written out.
The Ace Trainer's best trick is to make attacks that would normally be ineffective into super-effective.
The Capture Specialist will be able to Capture pokemon without a possibility of failure.
The Breeder will be able to breed strange type moves on to pokemon. (Water pulse onto Charmander wtf?)
The Psychic eventually can speak to pokemon.
The Martial Artist eventually can fight pokemon without the use of their own.
Researchers will be able to find certain pokemon, forcing the GM to make certain wilds appear.
Coordinators are the cash flow class, they can get a ridiculous amount of money at a contest with very little effort.

In the playtesting game I'm running now, health care is not free. It's 10 credits each to heal a pokemon.

So just to keep discussion going and because it interests me, how do you handle the interaction with Pokemon as the DM? Do you treat it as an NPC that the player controls during combat or do you relinquish control over to the player completely? Have you ever had a player need to have a battle of wills to make a captured monster obey or do they just start taking orders immediately after you beat them half to death?

Ah. Thanks for that info. I would have done it anyways, but I was curious as to whether you had explored it. It's alright for handheld games where I'm more concerned about IVs, EVs, and movesets, but in a tabletop game I sort of expect at least some level of internal consistency.

As a sidenote, I believe I saw someone knock up a rules system for Pokemon on the Wizards forums five or so years back. I think I saved it; I'll go looking through my files and post some of what I find in case you want to scavenge any ideas off of it.

Awesome question. Hatched pokemon are loyal to players, they do what they are told. Starters as well. Wilds, not so much.

Awesome example: My players captured an Arcanine after killing two of her pups, making one run away never to be seen again, and the last was captured.

Later my player sent Arcanine out for the first time against Erika. It turned around and tried to kill him.

    Poke Master

Abilities: Charisma determines how many Pokémon a Pokémaster can control. A Pokémaster is also somewhat dependent upon ranged combat, which is highly influenced by Dexterity. Most Pokémaster class skills (see below) are based on Charisma, Intelligence, or Dexterity.
    Alignment: Any.
    Hit Die: d6
Class Skills: The Pokémaster's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are:
Bluff (Cha), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Handle Animal (Cha), Heal (Wis), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (Arcana - Int), Perform (Cha), Profession (Wis), Ride (Dex), Sleight of Hand, Speak Language (special), Survival (Wis).
Skill Points per level: 4 + Int Modifier.

    Class Features:
Armor and Weapon Proficiency: Pokémasters are proficient with all simple weapons, nets, bolas, Orcish Shotputs, Halfling Skiprocks, harpoons, shuriken, and whips. Pokémasters have proficiency only with light armor. Pokémasters are considered proficient with using any bludgeoning weapon they are normally proficient with for inflicting subdual damage (thus, they do not duffer a -4 to-hit penalty when attempting to inflict subdual damage with any bludgeoning weapon they are proficient with).

Caster Levels: Even though Pokémasters do not gain spells per day or have spell levels - Pokémasters have many caster level dependent abilities. A Pokémaster gains a Pokémaster caster level for every Pokémaster level. If a Pokémaster gains a Prestige Class which adds to Caster levels - she may choose to raise Pokémaster caster levels instead of other caster levels.
    >> Anonymous 08/04/09(Tue)00:17 No.5331365
    >>5331355

Pokémon: A Pokémon is any Aberration, Dragon, Elemental, Magical Beast, Ooze, Outsider, Plant, or Vermin which advances by "Hit Dice" rather than "By Character Class." Creatures which can advance by hit dice or character class - like Beholders, are Pokémon even if they have character class levels. Deity level creatures, including unique dragon types and unique arch-fiends, are not Pokémon regardless of creature type. A Pokémaster can use the Diplomacy skill on any Pokémon as a normal Diplomacy attempt to influence NPC attitudes - regardless of the intelligence of the Pokémon or whether or not the Pokémaster shares a language with the Pokémon.

Pokéballs and Pokémon: When a Pokémon is caught with a Pokéball (see Craft Pokéball below) it is shrunk down and placed in stasis like in Gloves of Storing (DMG: pages 217-218). While in a Pokéball, Pokémon do not to eat, sleep, breathe, etc. A Pokémon can be returned to its Pokéball or removed from its Pokéball as a standard action by the Pokémaster which owns it - with a range of 25' + 5' per 2 caster levels. If a Pokéball with a Pokémon is traded, given, or sold to another person, ownership of the Pokémon is also transferred. A Pokémon heals rapidly while in its Pokéball. Regular damage is converted to subdual damage at the rate that subdual damage normally heals for the creature. Subdual damage heals at the normal rate while in its Pokéball.

Control Pokémon: A Pokémaster can have a number of Pokémon in Pokéballs equal to her Charisma Modifier be "Controlled." A Controlled Pokémon behaves like a summoned monster when released from its Pokéball, and is essentially under the control of the Pokémaster. A Pokémaster cannot control a Pokémon whose Challenge Rating is equal to or greater than the Pokémaster's Caster Level. An uncontrolled Pokémon will act as it sees fit, possibly going on a rampage, running away, or simply sleeping until it is returned to its Pokéball. Furthermore, Dragon Pokémon are harder to control than other Pokémon, and use twice their CR (or their own CR + 4, whichever is less) to determine whether they will obey their Pokémaster. A Controlled Pokémon cannot use any Summoning ability to summon uncontrolled Pokémon.
More than one controlled Pokémon can be out of their balls at any one time - but only the first one released behaves like a summoned monster - any subsequent released Pokémon will act normally, usually standing around and watching events transpire, or sleeping (extreme events can cause them to take direct action at DM's option).

Losing Pokémon: A Pokémaster can, at any time, release their Pokémon into the wild. This is a process that takes about 10 minutes during which the Pokémaster says her good-byes to the Pokémon. The Pokémon is then free to do whatever it wishes, its current intelligence, alignment, and abilities do not inherently change from this release. The Pokémon's Pokéball is broken in the process, and is no longer attuned to that Pokémon. Pokémon who were treated especially well or poorly by their Pokémaster will not forget that treatment and may, at the DM's discretion, act accordingly either immediately or at some time in the future.

Are you going to let players choose their starters?

In fact, why don't you go through and tell us what the players are like. Classes, starter, captured pokemon.

How do gym battles work? I mean, normally it's a one on one duel Perhaps in this case (with a party) it could be more like a free for all? a five on five duel with the gym leader at the head of a menagerie of pokemon, and the players only choosing one pokemon to enter into the duel?

Death and Pokémon: Sometimes, Pokémon die, this causes a great loss to the Pokémaster, both emotionally and spiritually. A Pokémaster whose controlled Pokémon dies immediately loses 200 XP times the CR of the Pokémon (zero XP for Pokémon below CR 1). A Pokémaster can make a Will save (DC 15) to halve the XP loss. XP lost in this way are recovered if the Pokémon is raised from the dead by any means (usually Raise Dead or Resurrection). The XP is recovered if the Pokémon is Reincarnated, but the new body breaks the Pokémaster to Pokémon link and the Pokémon is no longer controlled, and may no longer be a Pokémon (depending on its new type).

Train Pokémon: A Pokémaster can train or evolve their Pokémon with their Handle Animal skill. As an extraordinary ability, a Pokémaster need not choose specific animals as trainable and can use Handle Animal on any Pokémon. Training a Pokémon takes 8 hours and has a DC of 15 + the Pokémon's CR. If the training would alter the Pokémon's CR - use the new CR. The effects available from Training Pokémon are based on the number of Ranks in Handle Animal the Pokémaster has:
    >> Anonymous 08/04/09(Tue)00:20 No.5331390
    >>5331383

3 ranks - Learn Trick. This is just like teaching to an animal companion (see DMG page 46). Note that some Pokémon are intelligent enough so that they are able to perform "tricks" without being specifically taught - and all Pokémon are able to learn at least 4 tricks even if their intelligence would not normally be high enough.

6 ranks - Grow Pokémon. This causes the Pokémon to advance 1 Hit Die, if it would not cause the Pokémon to exceed its advancement limit. This may cause the creature to grow in size category, see the monster description. This may also cause the Pokémon to become uncontrolled, if this raises its CR to past the maximum CR the Pokémaster can control. You select what skills, if any, a Pokémaster gains for its level, and if this would cause a Pokémon to gain a feat you may select the feat.

9 ranks - Evolve Pokémon. This causes the Pokémon to evolve to a more advanced form. The Pokémon gains a template of your choice. Note that this may cause the Pokémon to become uncontrolled, if this raises the CR to past the maximum CR the Pokémaster can control. The Pokémon remains a Pokémon even if its type changes to a type which is not normally a Pokémon. Pokémon who become Dragons in this way are not harder to control than natural dragons are. You select what skills, if any, a Pokémon gains with its template, and if this would cause a Pokémon to gain one or more feats you may select the feat(s). At the DM's option, a Pokémon may be evolved into a similar but more powerful form that is normally represented by a separate entry. For example: a DM might allow a Pokémaster to evolve her Red Slaad Pokémon into a Green Slaad, or a Fiendish Horse into a Nightmare. Alternately, a creature with multiple versions (like a Dragon) could be advanced into a more powerful type (a wyrmling green dragon into a juvenile green dragon, for example).

A Pokémon of type Beast which is evolved into a different type, gains a permanent one-time "Hard to Control" modifier as if its CR was 1 higher than it actually is.

A Pokémaster can advance their Pokémon without altering their appearance, with more difficulty. The Pokémon gains all the abilities of the new form, but it does not change in size or show any obvious effects of the transformation. The DC for a "silent" transformation is 20 + the Pokémon's new CR.
    >> Anonymous 08/04/09(Tue)00:21 No.5331408
    >>5331399

12 ranks - Inspire Pokémon You may be an especially kind or cruel master to your Pokémon, giving it a permanent +2 Sacred or Profane bonus to any statistic. You may only give this bonus once to each Pokémon, and you cannot give different bonuses (Sacred or Profane) to different Pokémon

Pokedex: A Pokémaster character can identify any Pokémon with a Knowledge: Arcana or Survival check, regardless of the creature type of the Pokémon. A Pokémaster could, for example, call upon knowledge of a Beholder with the Survival skill as if she had an equal facility with Knowledge: Dungeoneering.

Craft Pokéball: A 2nd level Pokémaster can craft Pokéballs. A Pokéball costs 100 GP and 8 XP to make. It costs 200 GP to buy one from a Pokecenter. A Pokéball acts as a thrown weapon, which is used as a ranged touch attack with a range increment of 15'. Using a Pokéball is considered to be using a spell like ability. If a Pokéball thrown by a Pokémaster hits a Pokémon it inflicts 1 point of subdual damage per caster level - if the Pokémon is unconscious after being hit by the Pokéball it is sucked into the Pokéball and now belongs to the Pokémaster who threw the Pokéball - the Pokéball is now sitting in a square formerly occupied by the captured Pokémon If a Pokéball hits a Pokémon it is attuned to that Pokémon and cannot be used on any other Pokémon - ever.

Heal Pokémon: A Pokémaster may attempt to accelerate the healing of a Pokémon in its Pokéball. By spending a fullround action, a Pokémaster can attempt a Heal Check (DC 15) to either convert all regular damage suffered by the Pokémon into subdual damage, or to confer the benefits of 1 day of rest to the Pokémon (2 Hit Points per hit die, 1 day worth of repaired Ability damage, the recovery of any limited uses/day abilities, and the healing of all subdual damage). This ability may be used on each Pokémon 3 plus the Pokémaster's Wisdom bonus (if positive) times per day.

Subtype Specialization: A Pokémaster can choose a subtype which is her specialty. A Pokémaster gains a +1 bonus on all Bluff, Handle Animal, Knowledge, Listen, Sense Motive, Spot, and Survival, checks when using these skills on or about such creatures for every 3 caster levels she has. A Pokémaster can choose a second Subtype to be equally proficient with at 12th level, and a third at 18th. A Pokémaster can Control one extra Pokémon which must be of a subtype that she specializes in. Subtypes include: Air, Aquatic, Chaotic, Cold, Earth, Electricity, Evil, Fire, Good, Lawful, Reptilian, and Water.

Increased Awareness: At 4th level and above, a Pokémaster's Pokémon become more intelligent and aware. After the Pokémaster has owned her Pokémon for at least 1 week, its intelligence changes to the Pokémasters ranks in Handle Animal if that is more than its normal intelligence.
In addition, a Pokémaster can make her Pokémon gradually see things her way - a Pokémon's alignment shifts one degree towards the Pokémaster's each week if she can succeed in a Handle Animal check at a DC of (10 + the Pokémon's CR). The DM decides whether it moves Law/Chaos or Good/Evil first depending upon circumstances. So if a Lawful Good Pokémaster captured an Imp (lawful evil Pokémon), the Imp could become Lawful Neutral after one week, and could be Lawful Good after 2 weeks. Pokémon subtypes are unaffected - so a Evil Pokémon such as an Efreet would stay subtype Evil even if it subsequently became of Good alignment.

Double Team: Upon reaching 4th level, the Pokémaster is able to control two Pokémon out of their balls simultaneously, even in battle. This ability only functions so long as both Pokémon are more than 2 CR less than the Pokémaster's caster level. For example, a 5th level Pokémaster could command a single CR 4 Pokémon in battle or two CR 2 Pokémon, but could not command a CR 1 Pokémon and a CR 3 Pokémon simultaneously.

Speak with Pokémon: At fifth level a Pokémaster has Tongues - always on, which only effects Pokémon Even though a Gorgon's speech still sounds like "gorgongorgongorgongorgon" it is perfectly intelligible to the Pokémaster. Further, the Pokémaster's speech is understandable by Pokémon even if they do not normally have a language - even Oozes and other Pokémon not normally capable of communicating at all.

Craft Greatball: A Pokémaster can craft an Greatball, which is a more powerful form of Pokéball. It behaves just like a Pokéball except that it costs 1000 Gold and 80 XP to craft - and inflicts d4 subdual damage per caster level.

Type Specialization: At 7th level, you can choose a single creature type to gain the same skill bonuses as your subtype specialization with a creature type instead. You are not limited to normal Pokémon types. You may choose a second type to Specialize in at 14th level, and a third at 19th. You may have an additional controlled Pokémon, which must be of a type you are specialized in. Type and Subtype Specialization bonuses are cumulative.

Transfer Control: At 8th level a Pokémaster can choose to change which Pokémon she controls, up to her regular limit of controlled Pokémon All newly controlled Pokémon must be in Pokéballs possessed and owned by the Pokémaster. Transfer Control is a full-round action.

Advanced Pokémon Healing: A Pokémaster can, at 9th level, use Heal as a Spell like ability a number of times a day equal to her wisdom modifier, with a minimum of once a day. A Pokémaster can only Heal Pokémon she controls, but can heal them whether they are in their Pokéballs or not.

Craft Ultraball: A Pokémaster can craft an Ultraball. An Ultraball is a much more powerful form of Pokéball. It costs 5000 GP and 400 XP to make. When used, it inflicts d8 points of subdual damage per caster level.

what about if the pokemon master are some kind of beastmasters, wich are sorted in different classes/schools and have a specialization on certain type of pokemon. your final trial as a pokemon master is both a survival and skill trial. you're sent into the wild until you find the pokemon you want to "tame" or "master", and it goes like this: you win, and you have your first pokemon, wich will become a part of you, and can be summoned and dismissed from now on; you fail, and you're pretty much eaten alive. of course, you can always choose a vegetarian pokemon, in wich case you will onle be smashed, crushed, or torn into pieces.
(i apologize for the crappy english... and maybe for the corny story, but i think that a fantasy-setting pokemon should be carried like summoners' stuff).

Actually here's a question: How do you handle fighting against Pokemon, without other Pokemon, if you use separate stats for the two?

Have you considered rules for "doping" (ie steroids and other harmful boosters) for the less straight laced characters or does the breeder cover that sort of thing?

What's the death system for Pokemon like? Normally fighting them only knocks them unconscious in the source material so how easy is it to accidentally kill a feral Pokemon (its obviously happened in play already but how difficult is it to avoid it)?

Have you considered a system for 'breaking/taming' Pokemon much the same way people train and break animals in real life (breaking in this instance is in reference to breaking a horse or similar creature). Is it mostly roleplay or are there actual mechanical modifiers?

    Example's:
All mew is a left over pokemon.
There Lugia and Ho-oh where both simply rare pokemon that where so powerful they where placed in a state of worship.
The legendary birds are simple representations of elements.

I think you should really look into what captured legendaries will fuck things up for the world and which ones simply will not obey will need not only a lot of devotion in training like a shit ton of diplomacy checks (maybe to the point it may make there starter jelous)

    - Damage can be calculated from STR in Trainers, or ATK or SP. ATK in Pokemon.
    - Doping is allowed, but stat boosters only can be used for their benefits a few times. Hell, we've played with TMs as if they are serums injected into a pokemon (explaining their one time use).
    - Saving throws can be made to see if you return your pokemon in time if their HP is lowered to -50%, if they fail a pokemon CAN die. 0% of HP results in fainting.
    - So far breaking is roleplaying, I think I like it that way. I may add stats later if I feel the game needs them.

YOu know what makes no fucking sense in Pokemon? A tiny little Oddish or something fighting an Onyx. Not only would that Oddish be incredibly unlikely to be able to fight that Onyx, but the trainers of the world would look at that as a legitimate fight.

Might I suggest a rating system for pokemon? Each one would get officially rated based on size/weight/mass, lethality and time trained. Rank 1 would be Pidgeys, Weedles, Rattatas, etc. Then you would scale up from there. Some battles would only allow for pokemon of a particular rating, or more than that rating or less than it. A Heavyweight battle would require a rank above a certain requirement while a Lightweight battle would require one below it. Free-for-all matches would have a balancing system built in. A Trainer throws out a Rank 4 pokemon, and you'd be able to throw out as many pokemon as it takes to match that Rank 4, Four Rank 1s, two Rank 2s, or a Rank 3 and a Rank 1.

It would probably take far too much work and even if the was created it would only be applicable to Official Trainer Battles. That Oddish Fighting that Onyx still bugs the hell out of me though.

Obviously, there would be some differences (many Pokemon are screwed because they don't have access to certain moves. Things like that can be changed here much more easily then in a video game), but I suspect it wouldn't be all that difficult to take the idea and tweak it until necessary.

So this is pure game based? Then... Why is there a Nurse in every pokemon center that looks just like all the others?

Not saying that's a bad thing, to be taking only from the game, and oh GOD that anime is bad some times, but it's not a bad general setting things.

And also... the more I think about using a D20 base and adding pokemon stats... Umm... How does that even work? I'm assuming you aren't rolling d6's for damage and what not, and Strength has some equation to go into Attack? With... Dex and Con, maybe, going into an equation for Defense?

Do Pokemon have Skills, with ranks and stuff? How would they make Swim or Climb checks, then? And wouldn't they have to have Charisma to do well in Beauty Contests?

Also, a few of them should be really fucking weird to deal with.

In particular, Deoxys, Dialga, Palkia, and Arceus. Those four should be next to impossible for a trainer to befriend without devoting themselves to the task, simply because of how alien their minds would be.

Then there's the Unown, which really should have something more to back up their essential strangeness than the canon crappy stats.

And make some mechanic where there's an actual point to releasing a given Pokemon.

Also, the fact that at least a few of the Pokemon are food should be something going on here. Just for example, the job of Magikarp Fisherman is one of the most dangerous in the world, because of the off chance that one of the little bastards evolves into Gyarados while you're bringing in the net.

They have ALL been painstakingly translated into a d20 system.
They have accuracy rolls which can be altered by the speed of your target.
They have dice rolls. (1d6 for tackle, 3d10 for thunderbolt)
They have AOE. (Tackle - 1 Target, String Shot - 2m AOE of target)
    They have rates of attack.
    - At-Will - Self explanatory (Bubble)
    - EOT - Can be used once every other turn (Flamethrower)
    - Battle - Can be used once per battle (Thunder)
    - Center - Can be used once per pokemon center visit (Recover)

It took me days, but I did it. Every in game attack has been translated into a useable attack in PKMN: Tabletop Adventures. They are still be re-worked when my playtesters prove a certain move too powerful for its accessibility.

Yeah its something that upon the removing all the kidiness has untapped potential. A world of monsters that live and fight beside humans shit is awesome.

As far as the anime is concerned the first season in the khoto region was at times pretty dark and the first movie (although preachy with lessons) Mewtwo was probably one of the coolest villans I have seen in an anime and actualy kills people and mew well I daw'd at it.
    >> Anonymous 08/04/09(Tue)01:22 No.5332102

Well, Mewtwo you can deal with if you can clarify that you're not an abusive asshole to your Pokemon. Also, if you meet him post-movie.

Latios and Latias are also apparently pretty cool. The movie personalities definitely work there. Of course, being cutely stalked by a Latias could be funny.

Suicune, Raikou and Entei should also be vaguely okay to deal with once you get through their fear of people and the fact that all three of them were transformed into legendaries after dying horribly and still remember that fact.

Phione probably hates itself, given how hard it sucks.

Giratina is also probably on the list of "too fucking alien to comprehend".

Each center offers new NPCs I've made up on the spot. My players rarely care to interact with these type of NPCs. They heal their pokemon and leave.

Pokemon rarely needs to make checks to do stuff they can do naturally, within reason. Birds fly well, fish swim well. Pokemon's appearance stats are kept separate from their Stats.
They use the original stats -
HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed, to determine what they can do.

    >>5332045
Legendaries of such an alien nature ARE almost impossible to befriend. But then, how you even met such absurd legends and lived is the GM's decision.

Pokemon as food is also relevant. One of my players has a pidgeotto he feeds live ratata. As for the magikarp fisherman - he's not selling it for food. Source material says Magikarp are too hard to eat, they're useless in every aspect until they are Garaydos.

If you are going to take all the Moves and d20 them out, what relevance do the original pokemon stats have on an otherwise d20 based game? Do... they... some how translate into d20 rules? Because if Thunderbolt, even STABed (which I can only assume you are doing), is going to do some where in the realm of 3d10x1.5 damage, that's... going to take A LONG TIME to kill even... fuck. A Magikarp starts, at level 1, with something like 30hp.

And there's that. You've mentioned levels and friendship. I assume they are going to level 100, because you are keeping their stats, and the humans are going to... 20?

Actually, I've aged them. One of my players was no too happy to learn that Misty was no longer jail-bait.

It's really up to the GM and what they'll allow once I have the rules out though.

My game will have rules and it will have setting suggestions.
Only one is needed for play, the other can be as different from canon as the GM or players want it to be.

An awesome, alternate setting which should still be able to use the rules we've made once we're done.

no offense i don't think anyone but hardcore Pokemon fans would touch your rules, from what i understand, Pokemon use the stats from the game, which are quiet frankly, a clusterfuck and unusefull when put into PnP format. and a single base class seems kind of lame,
i would honestly stay away from d20 formula, i dont think it suits the setting or idea of pokemon at all.
    >> Devilock 08/04/09(Tue)05:43 No.5334161
    Yeah, don't use Pokestats as-is.

You'd need something with far less numeric variance and certainly not d20.

Multiple success rolls would be preferred but anything with bell curved rolls and far more fairness between uneven elemental matchups is good.
The video game as it is has little to no fairness between, say, a water vs. lightning... but that's the point. It's rock-paper-scissors, which works for it since you have 6 monsters.

With only one character per player you can't do that.

    >>5334140
    You understand half of it.
I used the stats from the original games as guidelines.
New stats are much more manageable.
For example Charmander's Level 1 stats are:
    4 Hp, 5 Attack, 4 Defense, 6 Sp. Attack, 5 Sp. Def, 7 Speed

I have 5 hard-core pokemon players playtesting it and demanding more sessions when I rarely have time.

Single base class? Who said that? If you're ASKING... There are seven classes to choose from with 7-9 Paragon/Prestige/Advanced/whatever-you-want-to-call-it for each of those seven classes.

I can't do much with you saying to stay away from d20. Maybe if you suggested something instead of just saying what not to do?
    >> Devilock 08/04/09(Tue)05:50 No.5334190
    >>5334168
Well same thing really, since RPG class = vgame elemental type as far as available powers for a monster.

I'd want something a bit more open for PCs but still limiting in how much a single monster can grab.

Anyway, there is a way to convert Pokemon powers to RPG format.

You know how each power has an inherent accuracy? It's in percentage, but that translates precisely to d20 roll.
    5% = a +1
So 75% accuracy on, say, Sweet Kiss becomes "Roll higher than 5 on d20 to hit"

Then you have that extra little effect such as a Flinch with Bite attack. That's 30% chance for effect, even though the attack has its own accuracy.
So you add in a d6 roll with the d20 acc.
Rolling 5-6 gets the added effect in this case.
Other powers have other chances, but you get the idea.

The point of Pokemon power acc. was that highly damaging effects tend to have:
    • Low number of uses (PP)
    • Worse accuracy, although not always

It's a balancing factor. If you shift that up or down due to stats, you might be punishing low-speed characters.

a classless system would probably just work better for something as ambiguous as pokemon trainer,

if your not quite sure what a classless system is, well you basicaly take your class features and instead attach point prices to them and give your characters a set ammount of points to distribute each game,

in addition, again this isnt the game, using the game stats from pokemon creates all sorts of problems, in a real adventure, a real pokemon might attack a human or have collateral damage, in a game, that isnt possible, the way you have it set up, theres just no way to translate damage in that way,

there are a myriad of ways to suggest changing the system and most of them all work, theres a lot of ways to run dodging for instance, you can make it a derivative of certain base stats, it can be a skill, it can increase over level like AB in 3.5 none of these are really wrong, but i just feel a class system is too pigeon holed for something as generic as a pokemon trainer. they're not such radically different concepts. a researcher just might put a lot more points into things like knowledge skills

Whoah, this thread is a lot. Before reading it all, I'm just going to ask: are the pokemon you have going to level up independently? With having up to six plus the trainer, won't it lead into inhuman ammounts of book-keeping, number-crunching, min-maxing and metagaming? (Much like the original Pokemon games.)

But what of a breeder? Or a Collector? Or someone who trains pokemon to get in touch with their emotion since they are capable of hearing their thoughts?

Damage a Pokemon can deal translates perfectly to a human. A human has virtually no defense, except for maybe a Martial Artist or Psychic. Oh, wait. So when Charmander deals 10 Damage to a trainer. The trainer takes the damage and is auto burned. Get to a hospital.

Hyper Beam goes through it's target and has horrible backlash if abused. My players know that purposely damaging property results in heavy fines or jailing which would end their campaign.

Pokemon do level up independently, but my players are choosing whether or not they actually stat a pokemon and keep track of it - or list it in their inventory.

Most, if not all, of my players have pretty much settled on 6 pokemon who they care about and would take a rare dragon or something similar to replace the spot on their team. They've all grown close to their pokemon.

and? i dont get how these seperate the characters anymore than an adventurer's motives, a fighter can be motivated by cash and a rogue duty. a fighter might take appraise while a rogue focuses on diplomacy and the like,

if trainers are defenseless, why have saves? why have attack bonuses? if they cant do anything? why bother having anything related to them. you dont need specific damage keeping systems for shit like, oops you fell off a small cliff, now your hurt, go get help/hospital.

I guess it's strictly their class bonuses that separate them.
    Their extra abilities etc.

    >why have saves?
so you don't just die, ending the game
    >why have attack bonuses?
so you are rewarded for leveling up and putting points where you want your sweeper/tank/supporter to excel
    >if they cant do anything?
who said they can't do anything? trainers grow up with their pokemon, picking fights they can handle and summoning their allies to fight along side them
    >why bother having anything related to them.
because this is what the original game lacks. trainer customization.

your treating them like you can only focus on the trainer or only focus on the pokemon.

from what i gather your trainers stats benefit the pokemon, and the pokemon acts as your bodyguard.

its like playing D&D and saying "lol why bother with a caster, they cant defend themselves."

a trainer provides support for their pokemon while a pokemon provides support for their trainer.

I'd rather pokemon and humans use the same base system.
    >>5334344
well if you absolutely have to have classes go ahead, I think its a bad move though

anyway the point is if all a trainer has to do is order their pokemon, they don't need very many stats, if they do have to do more than just order their pokemon, making them helpless is going to make the game pretty damn gritty.
