    27 KB Create a Setting OP 08/08/09(Sat)22:05 No.5386106
ITT we make a campaign setting together, contributing only a single thing per poster. The rules are simple. Read the thread first, and don't post anything that contradicts previous posts. Try to make the campaign usable, no sexual stuff. That said, feel free to completely deny fantasy cliche`s. Elves may be hard motherfuckers and dwarves pansies, etc. You are limited only by the character limit of your post. I'll start us off.

Culture in this world is dominated by Egyptian influences. The world is largely desert. Their customs are egyptian, same burial practices and architecture. However, their mythology and pantheon is that of the Norse gods.

instead of Osiris being god of the underworld, the Norse Hel, daughter of Loki is the primary deity. Her skin is half white, half black. She can be capricous, and a terrifying goddess that the people must appease. Fenrir is the beast that devours the unworthy souls during the wieghing of the heart, etc. Loki, being her father, might substitute for a primordial creation deity...Her priests would resemble Anubis, but instead of Jackal heads they have white or black wolf heads. They would have a great deal of authority, and the people obey their will without question.

breaking OP's single poster rule; for bumping's sake.
Valkryies, instead of being hot armored chicks with bigguns on horses that descend from the sky, are instead horrible mummified wimmins, in a chariot drawn by serpents or something. Once brought to the underworld, they expect to head to Valhalla and drink, fight, and fuck all day, but instead found themselves being mummified and turned into elite undead warriors, to fight for the gods in the event Ragnarok occurs. This is their divine "reward", the privelidge to fight alongside the gods during the apocalypse. From the day they arrive until Ragnarok, these mummy-warriors spend their time constantly sparring against one another and developing powerful Neg' energy powers, becoming super elite berserkers over the aeons they spend in "Valhalla".

Goat herders roam the deserts everywhere, searching for valuable food and water for their herds. There are legends of a ancient goat herder with the body of a young body with immense wisdom and knowledge. Some say that if you can find him, he could tell you the location of every spring in the desert or any other secret in the universe.

Thor could be styled after Horus, which i think is their closest equivalent, besides Seth. (he's pretty similar to Loki in some ways, so perhaps Loki could be patterend after Seth.)
Instead of a hammer and lightning, he would use a khopesh sword or some other iconic egyptian weapon. He uses the environment as his weapon as well, calling up huge dust storms, or swarms of locusts. He would be the patron deity of warriors and paladin-types. Paladins would prolly be more like combat trained priests, as there wouldn't be any full plate to stroll around in. Paladins (and priests for that matter) would behave according to the deity cult to which they belong. Some may not resemble the lawful good crusader types.

Fireworks are a weapon, there are several villages who have trained
men in using fireworks for siege and raiding, they even have a pact to not attack each other.

One of the most popular weapons is a large hand-cranked wooden wheel,
with rockets the size of doors attached to it.

The rockets themselves aren't very heavy.

To the north lies a lone moutian that is said to be almost impossible to climb. Rumors say that their is a temple close to the peak, and those who reside there seek true enlightenment through pure logic and science. Occasionally, great beams of light shine down from the peak of the mountain, the only thing close to evidence of this mysterious temple's existence.

    Elves:
Wood Elves replace high elves as the primary eleven PC race. They live in small communities around the river delta and are basically redneck stereotypes.

Dark Elves: Highly urbanized, they are overwhelmingly thugs and rogues. They have formed highly developed criminal syndicates that run protection and drug rings in the slums of most major cities. Drow wizards and sorcerers focus on creating the highly addictive alchemical potions that make huge profits for the Drowish mafia. Thanks to their urban environment, most half-elves are part Drow.

High Elves: Cannibalistic nomads who decided that civilization is a blight on the world. They wander the desert, only approaching civilization in periodic raids for slaves to use as food and beasts of burden.

Certain warriors bathe in snake blood and drink a bottle of pasty, fermented mushrooms in order to work themselves into a berserk frenzy. Apothecaries work to augment the most resilient and threatening berserkers to make them into terrifying battlefield juggarnaughts.

Sorcery is the most common form of arcane magic. Wizards are viewed as handicapped spellcasters.

There are two slave race, magically modified humans for use as workers and weapons.

The first is an aquatic species built to survive in the great saltwater oceans and river-canyons. They can remove salt from water and regurgitate the purified water for others, and are often brought along as an alternative to carrying large supplies of freshwater. They also serve in the navies as saboteurs, or are tasked with tending kelp farms or underwater mines.

The second are larger worm-like creatures that retain some human features, designed to be at home in the deep desert. They require little water and are capable of 'swimming' through sand. Originally designed to be simple, obedient creatures for sapping fortifications or hauling heavy loads, they are secretly far more intellectual then anyone realizes, and are careful to avoid fighting their own kind.

Propaganda states they are little more then simple beasts, harmless and under tight control, but a few manage to slip their master's control and flee where humans cannot follow. Other remain to help their rest of their kind, and may be planning a revolution.

While the Aztecs are largely immune, the zombies cause a number of diseases. In addition to basic plagues and bacterial rot, anyone bit by an aztec-zombie turns into a feral-zombie, a rambling mindless ghoul which hungers for human flesh. Because of all this, the Aztecs are largely feared and hated by the rest of the world.

if sorcerors are the primary spellcaster, then priest would become more of a social caste, and their spell lists closely gaurded. Not even the sorcerors, not to mention the people would know the full extent of their powers. This gives them a high social standing, and animal masks would be thier badge of office.

Mummification is the final sacrifice of oneself to Odin, and begins as the person is still alive. They are fed a powerful opiate to remove their pain, they are hung, and their side is pierced with a spear. Then the work begins in earnest; the brain is removed through the nose, the other organs are harvested and placed in canopic jars, and the body is pickled with the typical mix of 17 herbs and ethers.

Might be a terrible idea, cry more, I'm not getting paid for this.

Dragons are replaced by midgard serpents adapted to the desert (think Dune Worms). Instead of flying, they slither through the world in tunnels many miles under the surface of the desert.

Though intelligent, they are highly enigmatic (you know... the way dragons were supposed to be before everyone and their uncle included them in their campaigns?), and only leave the edge of the upper mantle (thermal energy being the only source of energy available that far under the ground) when their Tzeentch-like schemes necessitate contact with the surface-dwellers.

They consume sand, dirt and stone to accumulate body mass, and if they can balance their matter/energy consumption, they can live... FOHR EVEHR!

Gnolls may or may not worship them as gods, as the Wyrms/Worms/Serpents/Orms are far less subtle than the true gods in their conduct.

They understand but are unable to utilize magic. When struck, they shed skin/sand/matter (far more than just the area wounded). If one is reduced to a manageable size, it may be melted with pearlash to create a sentient and translucent glass. The galss retains the personality of its Ormish source, and although the Orm loses its ability to physically (and dramatically) intervene in the physical plane, they gain a fraction of magic. This power, though, is almost negligible, and so it takes millenia for their plans to come to fruition.

The world is a living creature, given life by _____ (another poster fill in the blanks). However, if there are other living worlds in the surrounding reaches of space, they are very rare. Worlds do not have to be living to host life or magic.

The world is constantly under assault by creatures from SPESS. These creatures are angular, stone-like or metallic beings whose very communication organs are so intense that if they land on the planet they create deadly shockwaves just to "speak" (sound does not travel in SPESS, so the creatures communicate by some kind of super powerful impact wave). There are millions of these, and they soar throughout SPESS in orbits. They exist only to kill other creatures, both of their own kind and foreign - each one of them looks and acts uniquely save for those qualities listed above, however, and they are effectively immortal - they can be destroyed, but some "essence" of theirs will still exist to consume another nearby organism and take its place.

These organisms, they know only pain and, thus, anger.

And the Dwarves are the culture who have chosen to protect the world from them.

There's a certain city temple dedicated to the worship of a god. It is highly secretive and people may not enter or leave without permission.

Recently an exploration into the desert revealed an underground temple. The sides of this temple were lined with statues of strange and unnatural creatures. This temple became a small attraction for pilgrims, archaeologists and the curious, nothing major.

One of the highest ranking members of the clergy of the city temple died, and later, during a routine and mundane visit to the temple, it was discovered that one of the statues had collapsed.

Ever since then an assassin cult has arisen which believes that the world shall be redeemed if all the high ranking members of the city-temple's religion are killed.

The only thing keeping the Aztecs and the Swamp people from all out war is the fact that the Egyptian-norse empire sits directly between them.

There are, however, constant border skirmishes and raiding parties.

I awake from noon rest to a sightless abomination looming over the camp. Unfathomable in its physiology, it blots out the sun, and for an instant, I am reminded of chief Taheiman's tales of unspeakable eldritch horrors that stalk the orbs in the night sky. Yet that was of my own imagination, and so of my own comprehension. This entity is something Other.

Shrieks of terror erupt all around, a cacophany of ignorance, or confusion, or love of life, or llack of understanding. It, like Father Odin-Ra, our Sol, is squelched too, as this Being roars. But it is not a voice -- it is the world itself, trembling under the wrath of the Thing Unknowable. It rises. For a precious few seconds, the clouds hide our doom.

'It falls!', I cry, but the air will not carry my voice. It, like the Storm Lord Tho'or, our Father, Odin-Ra, even the First, Atum, the One, is powerless to seize its movement. At the last, as it will land on our thousands, I see a Houndman in our midst. He bids it closer... Welcomes it.

I will avenge myself on the day of Ragnarok.

The Aztec warrior priesthood focus mainly (though not just) on Natural and Blood magic.

The Natural sect have virtually total control over the weather within 100 miles and have used this to great effect against their enemies. Some examples are they can launch tornados, hurricanes and especially sandstorms.

The Blood sect are a lot like the Tremere from WoD. They can possess, paralyze their enemies and the more powerful ones can even make them explode.

As a preface, I removed 'Elves' as a starting race in my campaign, because I didn't think superintelligent centuries-living ridiculously-learned people made much sense. So I restatted them and changed Half-Elves to fit the different 'Elf' subraces in the Monster Manual. That said:

The High/Gray/Sun Elves are aloof, unfriendly, racial purists, who believe that the desertification of the world was brought about by their god (insert Norse sun-god here), who left the desert to these Elves to govern. As a consequence, they treat all other peoples (especially Half-Elves) with disdain. They are ruled in large part by a religious sect called the Sowers of Salt, who seek to purge or subjugate all other life. Typically LE

Wood Elves are custodians of what little greenery still exists, aiming to preserve their lost world and to bring growth back to the desert. Typically NG

Dark Elves live in subterranean communities, away from the harsh glare of the sun. They despise the High Elves. Unlike the 'Drow' of other settings, the Dark Elves keep to themselves, and treat outsiders with courtesy, as long as they come in peace. They rarely congregate in large groups, as these would attract the attention of Aboleths and other denizens of the Underdark. Typically CN

I'm surprised that Uberstadt hasn't been mentioned.

This was attempted a year and a half ago. A project started and quickly died due to trolls posting the same thread every day as spamming material.

The results were interesting. Elves were originally created by the Fae as pampered pets - a small group of elves got tired of this and left in the world's development. They came across a group of giants constructing a gigantic city that rose up into the heavens and they used to the discarded materials to survive. Eventually, they dug underground to cover the rest of the discarded technology, slowly but surely becoming blind, albino technophiles, trapped beneath the future pillar-city, Uberstadt.
Turns out that Uberstadt was severely harming the world as other species began to inhabit it. All of the industrial activity was tearing the world apart and the Fae began to die, no longer able to maintain the world. Without their masters, the elves desperately scrambled about, trying to survive as they left the forests and entered the wastes. Three quarters of them died, unable to survive on their own. Three quarters of the survivors adapted to the wilderness, slowly but surely learning to survive. The remaining sixteenth of the original population arrived at Uberstadt - and are little more than pets used as status symbols and servants. Some of them have also adapted and gotten jobs, but they're the minority.

That's just talking about elves too. Really, this kind of setting brainstorming has allbeen done before.

The main beasts of burden are elephants and scarabs.

Elephants are rare, and upon death, are reanimated as ghoulish/zombified beasts of burden. Thus they can travel in the desert without complaint. Skeletal elephants are highly prized as war mounts due to their speed, shock advantage and pointy skeletal bits, but require some sort of magic to sustain them.

Scarabs are a common beast of burden used by peasants. They grow very quickly and reach the size of a small horse in a year. However, they are not very fast, and they only live for a short lifespan. Thus peasants are continuously forced to purchase/rent these beasts, keeping the majority of them poor.

Bones of a large nomadic mammal called the Urak. It has the appearance of a large rat, being about five feet tall and 10 feet long with their tail. Despite their usually calm demeanor, the Urak are prone to violent acts when mates or children are threatened. Although originally used to break into the tough barks of desert plants for food, in battle, uraks make use of large scything teeth harder than most rocks and with an edge that can shear through armor, flesh, and bone with ease. Because of this, the Urak's teeth are used as weapons for most nomadic tribes and are sometimes sold to other empires when there is a shortage of other materials.
Along with this, the urak's blood is a cure for being bitten by a Aztec zombie. In most cases this means a painless death as the blood reacts with the poison, saving the soul from a life of agony and torment, but if given soon enough, the blood will cancel out the effects of the poison with the only trace being the discoloration of a patch of skin of the victim's neck. This is seen as a curse and many of these people, if found out, are cast out as lepers and forced to face the perils of the desert alone.

necromancy is an accepted staple of the world's warfare - the undead do not thirst, or tire, or easily succumb to the hazards of the deep desert. Of course, the undead created in imitation of the aztec are either very stupid or very dangerous to their handlers.

While this allows armies to travel light, there must be sufficient necromancers to effectively command the horde. The lowest officers are given simple talismans to command their 'squads' and rebuke the enemy dead, while generals either are or employ magic-users who have developed specialized, long-range spells for directing the horde with tactics they would otherwise not be capable of.

This leaves small, elite squads of living soldiers to perform duties such as assassination of enemy necromancers or sabotage, anything requiring finesse. Many battles have been decided by these units, the undead horde falling apart to be destroyed or captured once the controlling wizards are dead.

These creatures are usually seen after wars in which many undead were used since they are the only animals who can digest the tainted meat and remain unharmed. These birds are usually chased off by the necromancers who return to the battle field to collect their army only to find them being devoured by the birds. The birds use a second set of arm like limbs to grab their meal and carry it to their nests on steep cliffs and huge long dead trees.

This tower is home to a strange, esoteric order of men who clad themself in metal and weild strange glowing weapons. These men devote themselves to the destruction of undead in all their forms, occasionally setting out in small parties to strike down a particularily promising necromancer or general. Fierce combatants with almost impenetrable defences, this small order is often saught out by bounty hunters and lawmen looking to make a name for themselves, but few have ever returned.

Basically an order of knights. Metal armor and weaponry is lacking in this setting, so they have almost impossibly good combat capabilities. They are devoted to destroying the undead, which they see as abominations in the eyes of their God. The oasis their tower is around has a strange prophetic property to those who gaze into it's depths; they use this to find out which battles and people are going to result in the largest spread of necromancy and the undead. They then set out to stop these people and battles as best as they can. They don't have enough numbers to actually make a difference most of the time though, so they rely on precision strikes to combat the undead as best as they can.

    Hows that?

    The Mok are a plague.

Ten to fifteen feet tall humanoids, gangly and hunched, with long apelike arms that practically drag through the sands as they walk. Their bodies are mottled khaki and beige to blend seamlessly with the endless desert. Their heads are masses of long, writhing tendrils, and their all-too-human faces unhinge into triple segmented jaws lined with row upon row of cutting and grinding teeth. In combat, what few strikes that can find their way through their layers of iron-hard bone plating and actually pierce their unfathomably tough hides mean little, for the Mok can regenerate from even the most severe of wounds; without the most powerful of high sorceries, the Mok are virtually unkillable.

They exist only to consume. The Mok devour anything and everything within their path. Plants, animals, the walking dead, it matters not; if it lives or once lived, they will tear it apart and eat it. They march endlessly, leaving only devastation in their wake. They are a plague.

Some say that they rose from the sea, others that the gods plucked them from the Underworld to punish mankind for a terrible sin. The only truth known of them is this: if you see them on the horizon, it's time to move.

One of the most feared poisons know to the world requires, ironically enough, common sea salt to be created. Not many know this...

First, a battle involving massive expenditures of negative energy must occur near a sea shore, and the healthy blood of the living and the fetid blood of the undead must mix in the proper quantities and flow into the sea.

If the conditions are right, the tainted seawater will evaporate under the sunlight and leave behind blood-red salt crystals. These crystals can destroy a thousand times their weight in water before dissolving, and slipping a crystal into a man's food will see him shrivel and dessicate to dust in moments.
