130 KB NUTOPIA AGAIN Nutopia Flufffag 08/15/09(Sat)01:16 No.5459874
Hello folks, just another shout out for anyone bored and wanting to look into a unique and (I think) rather awesome Post-Apoc Cyberpunk setting by the name of NUtopia. The setting boils down much like Gerwazy stated last night:

Alright. Now Cyberpunk where the Punks win, topple the Corps and in their Death Throes the Corps hit the "FUCK THE WORLD!" button and nukes fly and the corp's mercs go all out on everything that isn't an employee and all hell breaks loose in general.
And then, everyone starts to rebuild, all very decentralized and city-state like because everything's all is dissarray and few people want much to do with corporations or big government for the moment.
As the world needs rebuilding there's always work to be found. For the PCs this is as "Delvers", adventurers who head into ancient Corp vaults for lost technology and whatnot.
And you and your companions can be rather weird since this is in a post-apoc (ish) cyberpunk kind of setting. The Soldier might be a SPESS MAHREEN wannabe, complete with steriod-esque muscle mass, acid-spitting and skin that can stop most caliber rounds, a Hiver who works wonders with the nanobots housed in her body, a hacker who's fully digitized and happens to be a walking Spider Tank, etc.

Last night we decided that Jet fighters would more or less be the modern WMD of Nutopia.

In the modern day, planes like the F22 are pretty fucking hardcore. Functions as both a bomber and a fighter jet - could swoop in and kill you without you knowing until everything becomes fire.

Since NuTopia takes place a good distance into the future, this level of "Fuck you up" would undoubtedly be increased - of course, so would maintenance and fueling cost. So the few people that have them don't use them will-nilly - especially against other guys with Jets, since that's a good way to get your jet shot out of the sky.

It'd be something that would make a Delver team shit itself when seen on the horzion. One of these could swoop by and chew your VTOL plane to pieces without even trying.

Also some discussion was done with regards to tanks and attack helos. While a NUtopian jet has a stat block like Cain's (you lose) a Tank or an Attack helo is more approachable. A skilled delver team could handle one or more of them, but it becomes a sort of cost benefit analysis. Is the salvage worth the resources we'd need to expend and the risks we'd need to take in order to down these bastards?

One military-grade laser to your control surfaces will utterly ruin your day. And you can't dodge it. And can theoretically be killed by it by somebody using the Mark One Eyeball for targeting.

    >Alright. Now Cyberpunk where the Punks win, topple the Corps and in their Death Throes the Corps hit the "FUCK THE WORLD!" button and nukes fly and the corp's mercs go all out on everything that isn't an employee and all hell breaks loose in general.

Flawed premise unless the entire world is run by one singular monolithic corporation. But you typed corpS - as in plural.

Your premise is flawed because no matter how bad it gets for any one corp, all the employees will simply just pack their bags to go work for another one. The ones who do, in fact, have their finger on THE BUTTON would know better than to destroy an otherwise profitable world. They would just simply pack their golden parachutes (all those millions of dollars they've made) and go live on some tropical island or else, they too would simply be absorbed into another corp.

You've got this weird mentality that a corporation is like some evil rogue nation that has Sauron in charge instead of a bunch of suits trying to determine what's the most profitable.

The point here is that the Coprs started in a logical manner and started to go power mad, sacrificing human rights for profit.

Also this is a setting with walking tanks and widespread genetic modification in it, the thing that ruins suspension of disbelief for you is the idea that there might be a CEO who is so attatched to his power that he'd rather burn everything than let anyone else have it?

The Mark One Eyeball is, as its name implies, the human eye. You use it to aim, since a lightspeed weapon fired in the confines of a planetbound battlefield will hit whatever it's pointing at when you fire.

And there are some major limits to how heavily you can armor an aircraft against what amounts to somebody sending massive pulses of heat into its wings without making it too heavy to be useful. And, I suspect, to how well you can do passive stealth and passive laser-protection; the wavelengths are different. And if it's a particle beam, then that'll help even less.

Future tech jet fighters would likely be low-observable on multiple spectrums - including visual. You wouldn't see them, you wouldn't hear them. They would fly either very, very high, or very, very low. You could try to track them passively, but that would be hit-or-miss. Active emissions would only serve to let them know where you are, so they could drop a bomb/kinetic impactor/laser volley on your head.

Lasers in the setting are large, bulky, mostly not man portable and somewhat better in terms of destructive power than what we're jamming into those missile intercept 747s.

The more common weapons system is a railgun/coilgun, because I think they are cooler.

well, we've read different books, then. Fuck, i've been playing cp2020 wrong for all these years. The corporations want profit. And that's it. If grinding babies is profitable, they'll do it, but it's a fucking COMPANY which wants to earn money, not some lolEVIL plot device.

When Sovoil was fighting with Petrochem, they were fighting over resources, sources of cash money. It was a reasonable war both for them, and for their shareholders, and in some way both emerged a bit stronger from it, even if for one company it was more obvious than for another.

When Arasaka and Militech fought a war for no fucking reason other than lolEVIL and 'my bawlz are HUEG!', you know what happened? Two biggest arms dealing corporations toppled. They were spending millions daily, their investors were backing up in fear of retaliatory attacks from the other side, and in general nobody wanted to play with the loonies.

    >The point here is that the Coprs started in a logical manner and started to go power mad, sacrificing human rights for profit.
sacrificing human rights for profit IS logical. Sacrificing YOURSELF for no reason at all - isn't.

Because they it was either that or get dragged out into the streets and be pulled limb from limb on live tv a few seconds later. I''l post the full rundown to see if it gives you a better idea of how things went.

It's 25 ACE, after the common era, after the Corps fell.

Well, they didn't fall, we toppled them. After a hundred years of toiling and striving we finally got back what we wanted. We got back our freedom, we became relevant again.

The Corps were ironclad. We were well and truly theirs. Those of us that weren't taken in the night and modded beyond recognition for some impossibly niche task were worked to death compiling data. We created and slaved and toiled for a system that existed to perpetuate itself. New skin colors and hair styles that none of us would ever see. Our minds were worn down to nothing for the pleasure of one tenth of a percent of the population.

They were well protected from all forms of attack. Their 'bots and Mercs protected them from the few unincorporated nations and from each other, but they neglected their foundations. The Global Network was truly ubiquitous. Its transmitters float in the stratosphere and permeate the crust; our Earth is a literal infosphere. The formulations of a rebellion flowed along the back channels. It allowed us to execute perfectly coordinated insurrection. One day the cogs, the gears that moved their massive industries and bureaucracies, Us, rose up. We moved outside their machinery and brought it down.
    >> Nutopia Flufffag 08/15/09(Sat)02:27 No.5460505
    >>5460501
There were losses. In some places atomics were detonated in their silos as the last spiteful acts of newly impotent CEOs. 'Bots were given liquidation orders, Mercs set loose. 5 years of strife followed, and with it went 5% of the earth's livable surface. 1, 201, 372, 459 people died. We know because everyone was tracked. It was one of the first things we did away with. We've actually got kids being born now without transponder chips, and they'll never have them. The Unincorporated States still exist, and many ran to them after The Corps Fell. Some people simply couldn't handle a life without someone else determining its structure. A surprising number of us, however, stayed in the wastes.

We are creating something new amongst the wreckage of the past century. There are of course dangers, simple scarcity being the biggest threat. For this we have The Delvers, individuals of unique capability and motivation who dive into forgotten supply depots and ammo dumps, plumbing the treasures of the last age. Some protect our communities from still roving 'Bots and Mercs, and from those of us who find it easier to prey on isolated communities than contribute.

It is a new age; we are for the first time in the history of the species a globally connected collective of true individuals. We are clawing our way out the ashes of the worst atrocity this planet has ever seen like a new born phoenix, and we are creating something wonderful.

We are, for perhaps the first time, Human.

This is the world of Nutopia. At some point in the early 21st century the world’s governments were almost entirely supplanted by powerful corporations who where more than happy to step in when traditional authorities couldn’t keep up with the implications of the technological leaps and bounds that the young millennium saw. However, the age of progress grew into a nightmare.

The corporations grew ever larger and more powerful, and more and more paranoid. They themselves then fell to the inexorable march of technological progress, the world wide infosphere they had created serving as the soil in which a global rebellion took root.

The survivors of the terrible rebellion and the age of oppression that preceded it are of a new mind They value freedom in its purest forms, and know well the dangers of unchecked power.

For all the hatred we pour on them, it’s important to note that without the Corps we could never have gotten here. It was their technology that facilitated this next step in history. It was the lessons that they taught us, lessons that all saw and none can forget, that brought us out of the darkness.

Humanity has no doubt had its share of dictators and tyrants, but this is the first time that the whole world was integral in their destruction, and evidence of that war is etched across the surface of the planet. Abandoned cities and nuclear craters serve as surgery scars to remind us of what we had to do to excise the cancer of oppression and forced subservience.

As an added bonus, the event that served as the flashpoint for the coordinated worldwide revolution:

It was the spring of -2 ACE when things really got rolling. It was already nasty of course, wages were getting smaller, shifts longer and pensions were shrinking. Then of course there were all the rumors, genetic aberrations and disappearances that the corporate cops wouldn't investigate no matter how much you paid. This was all simmering beneath the surface and had been for a while, but at Central Park things came to a boil.
Illium Industries used to run an annual music festival in Central Park. Hivers and musicians from around the world show up and rock out. For a Corp sponsored event it was pretty loose, and the crowd was always huge. Well, -2 things had been grumbling along, some issues when the more Anti-Estab artists got up, but nothing real major, just folks having a good time. Well, last day of the festival everything goes sideways.
Some very skilled crackers got through the corporate VIs and pried their way into the system running the show, and switched the audio and onstage projections with their own material. One minute Sascha K is doing a live show, the next her audio cuts, and the hundred foot screen behind her is filled with a video shot from a wobbly handycam.

Some people are wondering what the hell is going on, but most were watching the footage. Some anarchist group in Russia had broken into some Corp facility. Cyrillic writing on a frost coated steel door, then a figure with a plasma lance cutting the hinges off. A lot of shaking and heavy breathing as the camera moves inside, then it pans around, there are cages, rows that go back into this building for hundreds of meters, and the things in them aren't quite human anymore. The crowd is really getting agitated now, and then someone in the video trips an alarm. There's shooting, whoever is holding the camera goes down, and the image just sits zoomed on the side of a surgical gurney in the hallway of the facility, the logo of Illium Industries plainly visible on the frame.
The video got cut soon after, but it was far far too late. The feed from Central Park had been broadcast around the world, live. Illium had grown overconfident in their security measures and they'd just been sucker punched, :hard:.
The crowd in the park turned into a riot in seconds. They spilled out of Central Park and into the streets. Of course New York was real posh then, so the proles were scaring the stockholders. Board members start calling CEOs wondering why there were dirty unwashed masses looting there penthouse, and Mercs got sent in. They put down the riot hard, fast and messily. It was an absolute massacre, concert goers with a few guns, some molotovs and whatever they had at hand against tanks, choppers and biomercs is a one sided and ugly thing. Of course by now this riot is getting out across the net from hundreds of angles as eyecams and surveilance swarms capture every second of the slaughter. The still of Sascha K impaled on a merc's claw, her arms still wreathed in flame, became iconic of the day.

The Ironic thing is IRL I more or less agree with you. The point here is that things certainly went to far gone during the fall, and that people are trying to pull everything back together. They are trying to create a Utopian society from the Ashes of a Dystopian one.

The mentality that you have is certainly represented in the setting as well:
Back before the Fall, you were the shit. The finest, most psychologically stable, tried and tested not to go insane even as the lab techs crammed more and more implants into your skull, overloading your brain with information. Unvaweringly loyal, unceasingly lethal. You fought in the Hidden Wars, the conflicts that didn't exist in the official records. You dueled with rival companies' Mercs in arctic wastelands, in desert heat, in space and underwater. When the shit really hit the fan, they brought you out to suppress riots back home and you watched the little men scream and run from the mere sight of you.

Then they approached you. The new victors. The communities. They invited you to their new free utopia, their uplinked, organic, low-tech, democratic little enclave of peace and prosperity and hope...

And you took a look at that and said fuck it. Fuck those goddamn bastards in the ass. Fuck the way they look at you as you stroll down the market street. Fuck the inquisitive Operators and their "so where were you in -32?". Fuck the anarchists, the globalists, the oh-so-helpful new government officials and their let's-get-along tripe.

You want meat to process shit? Open a branch office in some shithole, pay minimal wage, and people still will fucking fight for the job.

    >Because they it was either that or get dragged out into the streets and be pulled limb from limb on live tv a few seconds later.
still horribly retarded. What you do is, well, use your intelligence network [who do you use for fucking black ops anyway? out-of-corp edgerunners, that's a perfect source of information for any, um, 'revolution] and then:

    1. Buy some people to carry the bags of money for you
    2. Buy an island
    3. Buy a cruise ship to get to the island
    4. Burn the cruise ship, 'cause you realize you don't like it
    5. Buy another cruise ship, go to the island
    6. Live peacefully, maybe take a trip to Low Earth Orbit stations for a party and some snobbing around once in a while

and attacks? Take half a dozen Dragoons hooked to braindance to your island, and maybe a Spyder or two. Any attempt to assassinate you would be textbook futility.

So you and your unit left. For the wasteland, where true freedom is won with the railgun barrel and the hydraulic claw, where you wander the old ruins of your former makers for maintenance and spares and kill your old comrades who have gone insane from isolation and abandonment. When death is around the corner, that's when you're truly alive. This is how it's always been.

And you're happy. There's Jane, and while you both may not have human bodies anymore, when you make camp for the night and catch a few minutes downtime, you interface, and online your avatars looks just like you did in basic training, 50 years ago. And you smile at eachother as you embrace, and you think... This can go on forever. If you can fight and if you can win... You'll be immortal.

At least the people here are actually (gasp) getting shit done instead of making worthless potshots. The fact that we as a board actually generate content is one of the things that makes us one of the better ones.

and what now, should i apologize for seeing obvious flaws in the setting? I'm not erven using strawman arguments - the amounts of idiocy you present are so high that i don't have to.

    lolEVIL corps
    revolution out-of-ass
    nuclear holocaust out-of-ass

these are fairly fucking weak points. The fact that by destroying corporations you destroy the entire energy grid, food production, every possible industry and you suddenly have 100% unemployment is also something worth noting. Oh, and nuclear devices exploding en masse would have also some other side-effects. Like, you know, radiation clouds and such, rendering half of the planet useless.

as somebody said before - your setting is just an anarchist's wet dream. Anarchy is ok when you're 16, and your parents pay for your anti-establishment buttons. When you want to present that wankfest to a wider puiblic you have to make it coherent and logical. Only you can't, because anarchy is a retarded concept that cannot be put to life.

What if something else caused the apocalyptic event (alien space bats, asteroids, hackers on steroids)? Would you care then? Or would you still call it "an anarchist's wet dream"?

I mean, you could apply that to any post apocalyptic setting whether or not the author intended that or not. A zombie apocalypse would be an Anarchist's Wetdream, for instance.

except you /are/ strawmanning, because you haven't actually bothered to read it and just assumed two-dimensional disney villains a michael bay explosions.

There aren't LOLevil Corps, everything they did they did for profit. The genetic modification of unwilling human subjects into perfectly willing drones is not done simply because it's unethical, it's done because it is a more efficient exploitation of available resources.

There was no out of the blue revolution either. Things got progressively worse and worse in terms of living conditions, wages lower, less break time yadda yadda as the Corps began to exercise more and more control over their employees. The more detached the higher ups got the more they began to view the workers as property, and you can only treat people as such for so long before they flock to a trigger event and the whole thing blows up in your face. See: Every Revolution in History.

You also seem to be overestimating the scale of the nuclear devastation. Very little of the world is outright uninhabitable, there weren't a whole lot of launches. The reason this is post apocalyptic is as you stated, the price for taking out the Corps was civilization, and people are trying to rebuild that now.

It's not anarchy, that's just you projecting something that's not there, so pardon me if I get a little irritated when you try to pick at scabs that don't exist.

Right. So, let me get this setting understood.

There were communications channels between various parts of the world that were unrestricted.
In Central Park, people saw that corps were doing shit that was worthy of a kneecapping.
    *1*People Riot
The riot gets shot down, but news of it gets broadcast across the world, and people were like =|
A revolution is plotted, and it has a decent recruiting base, and access to equipment because there's always some corrupt asshole who'll sell out his own corp to the masses for personal profit.
*2*The revolution doesn't get its ass shot into oblivion until it's underway.
The revolution then rocks up to the corps, the corps are like "FUCK YOU NIGGERS" and they hit the fuck the world button.
    World fucking dies.
*3*All of the corps are caught in this.
Society crumbles without hardcoded systems in place, but there are still skilled and equipped people in existence in the world, so although there is nobody managing the production of clothes or fuel or buildings, people know how to get shit done, they're just disorganised.
    -
This campaign is set in a time where shit is getting organised. Delvers, the PCs, raid vaults and the like for technology that could jumpstart organisation, for useful resources, or perhaps they just fight off anyone who wants to interrupt organisation.

Here's where your plan has holes.

*1*: People don't riot. Not en-masse, not over this. People are scared, timid, weak little fleshbags. The last big riot in society was Tianamen square, and that was because people literally had no choice but to attack. This doesn't seem to be the case in your world, as people were still getting paid.
*2*: Shit gets monitored. Then Shit gets dead. How'd this revolution manage to keep its ass undetected when, even today, torrenting CP gets the police on your ass?
*3*: You're honestly telling me there weren't any sellout corps helping the people, or GoogleCorp, or anything like that? ALL the corps got an asswhupping?

If corps really are after profit then there's bound to be a GoogleCorp or two that treats its employees better, so it can hire more skilled employees, and is more popular as a result, thus moving more goods.

The revolution itself got organized on under-the-radar communications in the contemporary Internet. Shit is massively decentralized and obfuscated, but black ops did in fact get hold of them eventually. Don't think the revolution that happened was the first one to be organized from scratch. The ones before just didn't do it. They were erased. But they laid successively larger and stiffer foundations for the anarchists to come. Global communications are there, the corps rely on them too much to shut them down and can selectively suppress them only for so long.

There are a few corps that got their shit together after collateral damage struck them down. Most of them, however, had long before bet their contingency plans for further profit and power -- they did not make it. Those few corps do mostly benevolent things for the global societies today. We can thank WorldCom, inc, for building even more bandwidth for the Internet of today.

There are remnants of less than benevolent corps around, too. But killing your own workforce (during the several waves of rioting, that is) doesn't do good for business prospects. They're mostly just surviving like the rest of us, just with more elaborate gear and less of a future to look forward to.

4chan really needs a system where users who act like dicks all the time have their IP publicly available. And not just because that would make /g/ untrollable.

    Two problems:
    - That would require someone to decide who is a dick. But then, if someone's around to do that they can just ban that person. And mods never come here anyways.
    - IPs are easily changed. It's very easy to find a proxy site and your ISP can and will change your IP whenever they feel the need. This is why server owners actually have to buy a static IP.

    >>5465930 That's the biggest issue facing Nutopia currently. Lots of fluff, no rules!

Thats always a great problem with any world design, for it to be anything more than just intellectual exercise it has to at some point go through the grind of either constructing, modifying or adding to an existing system. Which is probably why generic games like savage worlds and gurps tend to be popular for that, as its not too hard to narrow stuff down to whats needed for the setting. You don't have to rip out as much setting specific rules for that.

Also the stat grind is the bit with the least need for feedback from the general mass of /tg/ rather than a more specific crowd who know the system you are going to use well enough to be able to look at things and see if they work.

For getting rules down though you're going to need to go through all the fluff with a comb and list what items, character types, relevant skills and defined areas for game play (levels of settlement, tables for items appropriate to location and so on). It takes a lot of time to get it down and fine tuned, and its best to get at least a few people to go over it and compare what bits each other missed or interpreted differently. That last bit is rather important as what you and the other designers come up with may not make any sense to someone who hasn't been through the game design (design notes along with things are a good practice to show players how you came about such decisions rather than say arbitrary number selection).

Just to very quickly address any questions related to the system, no, we don't have one. Some of us are looking towards crafting something in GURPS because, well, that's what GURPS is /for/. Frankly though what we need is dedicated crunch boffins to really crack in and see what can be done, and save for Teka's efforts we don't really have any of those people. Is there a Nutopia Cruchfag in the house?

    I'll repost my complaints.
#1: Your system came about from mass rioting. People are weak timid scared little fleshbags that don't spontaneously riot unless they'd die otherwise.
#2: Somehow you took down corps in an area where surveilance technology can monitor IDEAS. You can get busted in the modern day for torrenting CP, so how the fuck did this thingy start in your system?
#3: There wasn't any GoogleCorp, or (Starcraft-era)BlizzardCorp, or any equivalent corp that treated its employees better, and was more popular as a result. Google got just as much of an asswhupping as AOL in your timeline, which seems a bit odd.

This all happens an unspecified time in the near future. The corporate world (and the people, the people that run it) has escalated their operations and changed all the time. As you say, monitoring by then is so effective nobody could possibly even think of shitting stuff up, much less some disorganized scum on some message board.

By the way, the Google and the AOL of the time have already merged. Because, y'no, efficiency. Not to mention the interdependent domain-specific companies. Nothing could possibly go wrong.

Yes, nobody could possibly organize city-scale riots. It's simply not possible to communicate that. Everyone is fucking timid and paranoid to boot, they can't possibly gang up and wreck things. No, they'd rather sleep their chemically-induced sleep at their own, clinical apartment.

And you know just that line of thinking, relying on suppression elsewhere, made some corporate innovation departments to consider streamlining their very contingency off. Namely the corporate police forces met budget cuts, stretching out and overall having a lot less resources to work with. Fierce competition and a crackling global economy tipped many others to do so as well. It did go well for a while. Over time the corporate-owned police departments shrunk in attempt to use the now trickling money better, focusing on immediate threats such as espionage and property security.

Eventually it all paid out for the common man. It was increasingly easier to sneak messages under the radar with monitor software getting less updates, busting still happening but becoming a rarity. Underground organization became a possibility. Over a long time many laypeople found a messy, scrambled but anonymous tangle of information channels, originally fugitive hackers' communication software that suddenly had a slow and lumbering repressor.
    >> Anonymous 08/15/09(Sat)16:31 No.5467363
    >>5467200
The slowness of the many corporate monitoring departments gave a hefty headstart for the spread of the communication software, distributed by means that subverted most monitors by the latest tricks known to the arms race between corporate security and corporate espionage.

In some places the particular software didn't reach even the first people. In some others security departments caught up quickly enough. But in many places the software was so widespread and usage so benign the local corporate securities let it go. They couldn't prosecute that many of their parent company's workers, nor did it seem very dangerous. Just amusing videos and images of their uninteresting lives. Human drama. Nevertheless the known ways to access it were blocked on sight.

The big thing was the once arcane hacker communicator got out to the common workers. Many ordinary workers, developers, security men.. all had their first glimpses of a truly unrepressed way to speak.

Over time the will and skill to access new, yet undetected hacker channels spread. Not everyone was quick enough in their wits to evade detection -- singular dissidents were weeded out as usual. Over even more time these channels' development outpaced the usual corporate monitor's repression by such margin it could grow undetected.

When reasonably widespread use of the previously undetected messaging become uncovered, the corporate leaders in charge of monitoring were quick to express their concerns about losing their grasp of the workers they should control. Some corporate boards took heed, but some did not. The people uprising was considered such a unlikely feat.

    It escalated.

Well you may think it's a strawman, but I do feel that some of these people in the thread had a point of some aspects of the mega corps being too thin. I'm not going to tell you how to fix this, but I think they should be fleshed out a little more. What I'd probably suggest is a semi-detailed timeline, as that usually helps things fall into place. Pardon me if you already have one.

I think people are failing to grasp just how pervasive a communications network we are talking about here. I've missed the last few threads, but in the first one it was established that the 'future internet' that this setting was using was based around total connectivity - the transistors the system was based on were nanobots that permeated everything between the stratosphere and several kms into the earths crust. The Nusphere is literally everywhere.

Now, you think some of your friends get a little weird about updating their twitter, but in this society people live blog their whole lives. Whole sections of society record everything that they see and stream it constantly. The amount of data that such a society would produce would be staggering, and it would be impossible to monitor all of it. Data production and storage would outstrip computation by a number so large I cannot even phrase it.

Monitoring such a network would be a nightmare. It would be impossible to just screen everything - how do you screen for a message written in a cipher in the background of a D-level system moderator's constant live stream? Even the most mundane methods of information obfuscation would be effective, if they weren't already looking at you. The only effective way to monitor information at such levels would be via source, not content.
