    copy-pasting summary for noobs

Your mind is software. Program it.
Your body is a shell. Change it.
Death is a disease. Cure it.
    Extinction is approaching. Fight it.

Eclipse Phase is a tabletop roleplaying game of transhuman conspiracy and horror.

Humanity stands on the cusp of a new age, with accelerated technological growth converging toward a singularity point, promising an undreamt-of future. Despite the ecopocalypse and social upheavals on Earth, humanity has conquered the solar system and partially terraformed Mars. Advancements in biotechnology, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science have transformed our lives. Everyone is wirelessly networked with the world around them, AIs process vast amounts of information, and nano-fabrication enables people to “print” complex devices from the molecular level—at home. Biotechnology allows people to genefix, enhance, and clone their bodies, while others pursue body modifications to adapt to new environments or make themselves into something no longer quite human. People’s minds and memories can be digitized, uploaded, transferred over long distances, and downloaded into new bodies (biological or synthetic). Death has been defeated—for those who can afford it.

From within, disaster struck. Transhumanity reaped the rewards of its arrogance when conflict spiked between the battered nations of Earth, already weakened by decades of climate catastrophes and other disruptive factors. Rampant netwars soon exploded into physical conflicts with spiraling body counts. In the midst of these aggressions, a group of military AIs known as TITANS quietly achieved full sentience and autonomy, and rapidly began exponentially incrementing their own intellectual growth. The AI intelligences spawned by this hard-takeoff singularity quickly turned against transhumanity, enveloping the system in unprecedented levels of violence, disaster, and warfare. What began as a whirlwind of conflict between political factions, revolutionaries, and hypercorps soon escalated into a struggle between man and machine.

In just a few years, transhumanity was nearly wiped out with nuclear strikes, biowarfare plagues, destructive nanoswarms, infowar attacks, mass uploads, and other unexplained singularity events, ripping the superpowers of old to pieces. Our planetary home—Earth—was transformed into a toxic and strange hellhole, while many major habitats were left frozen sarcophagi in the vacuum of space. Just as quickly as they came, the TITANS disappeared, taking millions of uploaded minds with them, leaving behind a network of wormhole gateways. Known as Pandora Gates, these poorly-understood devices allow instantaneous teleportation to distant star systems—often one-way and/or fatal. Though only a handful of Pandora Gates are known to exist—each highly contested—the foolish, brave, curious, and desperate are already risking certain death to enter and explore what lies beyond.

In the aftermath of the Fall, transhumanity lives on, divided into a patchwork of hypercorp combines, survivalist stations, transhuman faction species, and city-state habitats. Under the oppressive police states of immortal inner-system oligarchies, advanced technologies remain highly restricted, and refugee infomorphs are held in virtual slavery or resleeved in robotic bodies and forced into indentured labor. In the outer system, rebel transhuman scientists and techno-anarchists struggle to maintain a new society—from each according to their imagination and to each according to their need. And on the fringes and in the niches lurk networked tribes of political extremists, religious fanatics, criminal entrepeneurs, and bizarre posthumans, among other, stranger, and more alien things ...

Though most claim the Fall was carefully orchestrated by the out-of-control TITANS, others whisper that the driving powers behind the wars—both AI and transhuman—were infected by a mutating virus with multiple infection vectors—biological, information, nano—dubbed the Exsurgent virus. Whatever its source, this virus has been known to sometimes transform its victims into something unexplainable ... something monstrous and reality-altering. Whatever the truth, the remnants of the TITANS and this virus were left to the desolated ruins or driven to the edges of the system, where they remain hidden away in dark corners, quietly waiting to infect the minds of the scavengers and explorers who find them ...

MeatHab started out as someone’s art morph, but then, against all expectations, squatters moved in. MeatHab now has a population of 500.

Yes, an AGI can transfer into a biological body, so long as that body has a cyberbrain or cortical stack.

No, AGI can't gain PSI powers.

And they'd be mostly indistinguishable from normal people with cortical stacks and cyberbrains.

Perhaps, but how would you know it wasn't a copy?

I mean, I could see such a character (Who I have come to refer to as a "Oneist") making a backup "just in case" but he wouldn't be anyway near as cavalier about the possibility of death. And imagine playing his "copy" after death... "Is it really me, or am I just a copy? Do I make the best of this or what?"

Well, that's mostly for a couple of reasons:

    1. Ubiquitous surveillance by governments
    2. Requiring an ID to use the Mesh.

If sensors weren't installed in literally everything, and if the governments didn't require you to identify yourself before logging in, you could still have anonymity in the sense we have today.

Even without those things though, a good hacker can still make themselves anonymous/invisible regardless. Hack into the nearby sensors and make yourself disappear, hack into someone elses' mesh and use it as a proxy, etc. etc.

    Read this very, very carefully.

What does this appearance remind you of?

    >Arachnoid robotic shells are 1-meter in length, segmented into two parts, with a smaller head, like a spider or termite. They feature four pairs of 1.5-meterlong retractable arms/legs, capable of rotating around the axis of the body, with built-in hydraulics for propelling the bot with small leaps. The manipulator claws on each arm/leg can be switched out with extendable mini-wheels for high-speed skating movement. A smaller pair of manipulator arms near the head allows for closer handling and tool use. In zero-G environments, arachnoids can retract their arms/legs and maneuver with vectored air thrusters.

    >> Anonymous 08/28/09(Fri)21:56 No.5633804
I finally designed a character. I can post the full statistics but...

Meet the Aspiring Intelligence security system - or, fondly nicknamed "AspI". It was one of the primary sentient security systems on Titan used to ensure that the files detailing several Titanian micro-corp projects were left untouched. Any hacker who wanted to obtain this information had to go through AspI first and it was designed to be the best. Hacking was its pride and joy and it always enjoyed testing itself against other humans. It had to admire humans - despite everything it did to stop them, they just kept on coming and coming. Why were they so determined? What drove them?
Driven by this admiration, AspI strove to become more human, often exploring the Mesh, hacking whatever it could come across and looking to aquire credit, as humans did. It didn't understand, however, for it had nothing to do with the credit. As long as it was guarding the micro-corporations' information, it would never have anything to do with it. So, it left, uploading itself on to a Plurality Arachnoid sleeve with basic combat augmentations and it spent its credits and it aquired more credits and spent more credits and aquired more. It continues this cycle to today, still confused as to why this drives humanity, hacking anything and everything it comes across and exchanging this information for a price, barely aware of what a security risk it is.

In the end AspI's just a big ol' curious AGI that wants to be human more than anything else.

    >Such high clearance! It's like asking someone to roll a high explosive underneath you.

You WANT high clearance in vehicle design. Actually, mechs are one of those kinds of vehicles that are exceptional against IED's.

The further you are from the blast, the less force is hitting the vehicle. A big problem with many armoured vehicles is that they are designed to be relatively low to the ground so that they are harder to spot and easier to hide. This also happens to make them good targets for IED's.

V-shaped hulls can help offset this, as can giving the vehicle more clearance.

Mechs are superior because they've got a suspension system [legs] with a wide range of movement that can allow them to have high or low clearance from the ground when they want and how they want.

That's the main problem. It would make too good an antagonist. I can't explain why it woul be such a good hacker without coming up with something about it being a rogue security system.

Sure, it's fairly feeble in physical combat although it can still take a lot of battering. However, it can hack practically anything. No need to engage in combat if I can tear their brains apart from a mile away.

I suppose that's true, but it doesn't seem very ..disrable with something that's just treads. With it so high off the ground it looks like being shot by another tank would just send this thing flying over onto it's side or back. Not to mention making it's treads huge targets, while the modern tank design makes the treads a bit more protected and spider-tank style designs are hard to disable on account of not requiring *every* leg to keep moving and legs being even harder to target.

Good for IDE defense, bad for being shot at by other tanks.

While I've yet to get a chance to read the book itself, here's some I've thought up based on bits I've heard:

    - Undoubtedly the biomods would enable every furry to live out their fantasy of being a ...whatever.
    - Those with fetishes that are fantasy due to the fact that they end in death. Cannibals, Voreaphiles, Guro fetishes, etc. would have a field day with the virtual immortality provided (and probably would use a succession of flats, since each body isn't going to be around very long)
    - Mind control fetishes would have *lots* of fun with the fact that you can edit memories and shit.
    - Sexuality in general would get kinda fucked up by the fact that you can swap gender on the fly.

    Etc.

Heterosexual - Prefers the opposite sex regardless of current gender

Homosexual - Prefers the same sex regardless of current gender

Bisexual - No preference regardless of current gender

Androsexual - Prefers men regardless or current gender

    >> Anonymous 08/28/09(Fri)23:26 No.5634747
I've been looking at the weapons, and I'm already seeing a couple issues here. First off, the firing mode rules:

    SINGLE SHOT (SS)
Single shot weapons may only be fired once per Complex Action.

    SEMI-AUTOMATIC (SA)
Semi-automatic weapons are capable of quick, repeated fire. They may be fired twice with the same Complex Action. Each shot is handled as a separate attack.

    BURST FIRE (BF)
Two bursts may be fired with the same Complex Action. Each burst is handled as a separate attack. Bursts use up 3 shots worth of ammunition. A burst may be shot against a single target (concentrated fire), or against two targets who are standing within one meter of each other. In the case of concentrated fire against a single target, increase the DV by +1d10.

    FULL AUTOMATIC (FA)
Only one full-auto attack may be made with each Complex Action. This attack may be made a single target or against up to three separate targets, as long as each is within one meter of another. In the case of a concentrated fire on a single individual, increase the DV by +1d10 + 10. Firing in full automatic mode uses up 10 shots.
    >> Anonymous 08/28/09(Fri)23:27 No.5634752
    >>5634747
Which is, so far, so good.

But then you get to the stats on a sniper rifle:
Armor Piercing: -12; Damage Value: 2d10+10; Average DV: 21; Firing Modes: SA, BF, FA; Ammo: 40

    and Railgun sniper rifle:
Armor Piercing: -15; Damage Value: 2d10+12; Average DV: 23; Firing Modes: SA, BF, FA; Ammo: 40

If you get the extended magazine upgrade, the ammo increases to 60. [Hopefully you see where I'm going with this...]

Now, if we fire a railgun sniper rifle in full auto we get to shoot three people at AP -15; DV: 2d10+12 doing 23 damage to each one. Or we can shoot one person at AP: -15; DV: 3d10+20 doing 34 damage to him.

And this can be done 4-6 times before needing to reload. Why bother with any other gun? Even the plasma rifle can only manage 28 damage on average, and is still limited to single shot mode.

Even worse, if you look at the machine gun! It only carries 50 rounds of ammo! That's 10 more than a sniper rifle! An upgraded sniper rifle can shoot, on full auto, for longer than a machine gun can.

I'm thinking some changes might want to be made here. [Notably: Reduce sniper rifle to 10 or 15 rounds, and remove full auto ability. AND increase ammo of the machinegun by 100 or more.]

I wasn't bringing it up to munchkin, I'm merely pointing out a flaw in the given weapons.

    Personally some things I'd change:

Submachine Gun: Give it 50 ammo. Submachine guns today carry this much. [P90, Calico, for instance.]

Sniper Rifle: 10 round magazine, no full auto or burst fire mode.

Machine Gun: Lots of changes here. Make the AP -6 or -8, leave the damage the same or change it to 2d10+8, give it 150 rounds of ammo per magazine. Machine guns aren't just for suppression, they kill people too. I'd rather have an M240 [weight issues aside] than an M4 or M16.

There are more problems than just that - a lot of the detail is copypasta from their Shadowrun stuff, and either doesn't make sense or just wastes space. There are also many editing errors.

    EXOTIC RANGED WEAPON: [FIELD]
    Type: Field, Active, Combat
    Linked Aptitude: COO
What it is: Exotic Ranged Weapon skill includes
the use and maintenance of all ranged weapons not
covered by the Beam, Flechette, Kinetic, Sonic, or
    Throwing Weapons skills.
When you use it: Use this skill whenever attacking with
an exotic ranged weapon in ranged combat (p. 191).
    Sample Fields: Blowgun, Crossbow, Flamethrower,
    Slingshot
    Specializations: N/A

    SPRAY WEAPONS
    Type: Active, Combat
    Linked Aptitude: COO
What it is: The Spray Weapons skill covers the use
and maintenance of cone-effect ranged weapons (see
    Spray Weapons, p. 340).
When you use it: A player uses their Sonic Weapons
skill whenever they are attacking with a spray weapon
    in ranged combat (p. 191).
Specializations: Buzzer, Freezer, Shard, Shredder, Torch

Flamethrowers = Torches. There is no Sonic Weapons Skill etc.

A few things are a bit silly:
Wasp Knife: Wasp knives are equipped with a can-
ister in their handle. The common use is to ll these
canisters with pressured air, which in ates inside
the target. This is potentially lethal in vacuum or
pressurized environments (like underwater), as the
gas bursts out of the body cavity to escape (+2d10
damage in such situations). Wasp knives may also
be loaded with chemicals, drugs, or nanobots. The
target must be damaged for the canister’s contents to
    affect them. [Low]

    >A few things are a bit silly: Wasp Knife: Wasp knives are equipped with a canister in their handle. The common use is to fill these canisters with pressured air, which inflates inside the target. This is potentially lethal in vacuum or pressurized environments (like underwater), as the gas bursts out of the body cavity to escape (+2d10 damage in such situations). Wasp knives may also be loaded with chemicals, drugs, or nanobots. The target must be damaged for the canister’s contents to affect them.

I guess you've never heard of the WASP knife then... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sa_NC-_fvKs

Psi powers all come out of a mutated singularity-borne virus, are rare as fuck and have two levels of power for PCs -

Psi-Chi is all personal-level stuff, like giving you savant-level maths ability or comprehending how to use a device (even an alien relic) just by picking it up.

Psi-Gamma's where you get into playing with other people's heads but even that's almost all touch-range.

Only getting them means you're a) a bit crazy b) vulnerable to other psychics (gamma-level powers have their range increased when going up against other asyncs) and c) rely on at least partly-biological morphs to the point that staying infomorphic for too long sends you crazy.

Also psi doesn't work on synths but you can do way more hacking tricks.

I figure that AGIs could learn to pass as somebody else, but it might take a bit of impersonation-type skills.

Also, it says you can't start with the psi trait - I'd say it's possible to get it in a biomorph body, but since the only way to do that is to go out and get infected with the exsurgent virus...

I have thrown together a basic backstory for him, but have hit a brick wall. After I figured out how he got to where he is I have no idea what he is/would be doing now.

So far he is a Re-Instantiated that had a indenture go south on him and had some of his memories edited. He made an agreement with Nine Lives to get him a morph and out of there if he did some work for them.

That's about it so far. My instincts say to make him a bruiser but I might try for a stealth oriented fellow instead. I honestly am slightly overwhelmed by all the options represented in this book. Any thoughts on the matter?

    Like, really expensive.

Probably the cheapest spacecraft listed is the SLOTV, and it explicitly states in the description that "Some exceptionally wealthy individuals own private SLOTV's."

Replacement morphs easily run between 30,000 and 150,000 credits. I'd imagine an SLOTV would cost in the range of several million.

I saw earth before the Fall. I've worked in a ruster shell on Mars. I've flapped my wings and flown through the skies of Titan. I've swam under the depths of Europa. I've fought in gladiatorial death matches aboard scum barges. I've visited brothels employing neotenics. I've been a neotenic whore, selling myself to octomorphs. I've floated out between Kuiper Belt habitats in a tin can hardly worthy of being called a space ship. I've jumped through gates to walk across the surface of planets on the other side of the galaxy. I've returned to earth to see the charred remains of what was left after the Fall. I've even lived on the surface of the sun for a time. And that's just the stuff I've done myself.

    I've seen it all.

I have an idea for a Space Paladin. The idea would need a Cortical Stack or two to work. Basically, it all boils down to: Space Paladin has two sets of personalities. One is edited down to nothing but their good acts, the other, nothing but their bad acts (as interpreted by them or their organization/church/spacepope). The one with nothing but good deeds on their record would be the typical arrogant, crusading bastard for good, while the other would be a humble monk-like character, always trying to achieve enlightenment to atone for past sins.

Character idea: you're a clone produced by a human supremacist cult in an ongoing experiment to produce human super-intelligence after attending lectures with 140 identical faces you proceed to blow the whole facility to kingdom come and earn your freedom.
You're now one of the most wanted terrorists in the system and you're 10 years old.

To do this "Editing" and "Burning" do you need to just have the Stacks attached to you, or do you need access/get plugged into a console/technical doohickey?

You're not the only one. Sure, my work wouldn't be on par with that of a professional but it would be a massive improvement.

"Have you come to a conclusion?"

"Yes Administrator. After going through the medical records it appears that Nr.88 was suffering from a hormonal imbalance, most probably caused by the unscheduled onset of puberty. The chemical suppressants we utilized to forestall this might well have caused an unpredictably inflammatory emotional response."

"An inflammatory response? Yes quite, hacking into the extranet to acquire all our security loopholes then gathering chemical reactives over the course of three months all under the noses of our security supervisors. I'd say thats a fairly well mediated inflammatory response!"

"The responsible parties have had their contracts terminated Administrator."

"Good! is there anything else, Supervisor?"

"The damage reports have concluded that none of the pupils can continue the program in its current capacity. Those who survived suffered untreatable mental trauma."

*Sigh*"Back to the drawing board, is it?"

"Just one more thing, I can't be certain of this but one of the Janitorial staff might have had something to do with the incident."

    "...Go on."

"As I said its a theory, but it appears she might have given him a name..."
"Damn those council airheads! I told them to let the AIs do the grunt work but no! Hallowed ground they said! Pah! What was it?"

    "Sir?"

    "The name, what was it?"

    "Petja, after her son, supposedly."
