    Welcome to Tactics Quest!

The game where invention is rewarded and innovation required!

You start as a squad of guardsman pitted against the horrible enemies of mankind!

You WILL die, so play smart!

Suggestions for actions will be chosen by,
    a) popular choice (first post to get DO THIS ONE)
    b) first post (in the case that no one wants to back up anything other than their own idea)

    Good luck!

    ***

You are awaken from the darkness to the sound of shells flying overhead. As your vision returns, you see a guardman standing over you, looking scared. As you get to your feet, much to his relief, you take stock of the situation.

You and your squad are part of the 46th, a regiment of heavy infantry currently attached in support of an armoured company that is on the offensive.

You and the remainder of your squad lies crouched behind a wall as shots fly over head, the body of your sergeant lying face down just beyond the cover of the wall. He had been trying to get you to move from cover and got shot for his troubles.

As you peer cautiously over the wall, you see the the burning wreck of the leman russ you were following as the silhouettes of necrons advancing slowly.

You can hear the sound of light tanks advancing behind, the 2nd wave is almost here. Without support against these necrons, the offense will fail!

You and your squad constitute 9 men, 1 mortar, 1 flamer and the rest lasguns. You all have frag, krak and smoke grenades.

    What do you do?

If video games have taught me anything, is look around for things that may explode. Look for cars, barrels, open fuel/gas lines. Wait for Necrons to come by then, OPEN FIRE.

Minimal amount of weapon expenditure, maximum amount of damage.

Note - I will wait for at least 4-5 posts (if I delude myself as to the popularity of this test run) before choosing an action, so bear with me. I try to follow my own rules to the letter apart from that.

    >>5768826

You tell your frightened men to set up behind the wall while the mortar team gets to work. In their frightened state, the minute they set up they start firing.

Mortar rounds start to go off in the distance but your men report that the shells are falling far too wide of the advancing necrons. One of your men volunteers to act as spotter, a risky business.

    Results of Actions,
-Advancing Necrons have now identifed wall as an enemy strongpoint, moving in to engage and destroy.
-Mortar set up but fire ineffectual
-Spotter allocated to mortar. Will not fire his lasgun but will make the mortar fire more accurate. You may remove him from his job.

    What do you do?

Right, Krak grenades are the super explody ones, right? USe those if so. Have 6 Guardsman line up two deep. First rank kneels while the seond rank fires over their heads. Mortar guy ppunds their back ranks while Flamer helps keep them out of melee range.

You peer cautiously over the wall. It's impossible to tell but they seem to be as normal as any necron can be. Mind you, this is the first time the 46th have fought necrons.

    >>5769030

No, the wall is slightly too small to allow for any effectie choke points either than the two corners and the small breaches in between. You count, including the corners, to have 5 possibly entry areas. You note that a squad of 4 would have a suitable fire arc as to cover all 5.

The mortar has set up as little way back in a small crater. All around you are ruined buildings, craters and vehicle wrecks.

You recall that the battleplans have the light armour advancing just a few KM behind you. Any minute now. You realise if you are killed, they will walk right into the necron counter attack. Judging by what you've seen so far of necron weaponry and what they do to heavy tanks, it will be a massacre!

Can we see a way to surround the Necrons? If so, toss smoke grenades at them. This will hopefully serve three purposes.

    1. Decrease their aim, increasing our survivability.
    2. We're IG, we aren't marksmen. But we CAN shoot a cloud.
    3. It can serve as a marker to our mortar guy.
    4. We can keep the necrons pinned down, making it more likely that we will survive IF we get any kind of reinforcement.

I was aiming to pin down the Necrons and make them stay in a general area. The mortar guy might actually be able to land a shell on the continent we're on, and take out/ severely damage a Necron.

    Secondary suggestion/question:
Is there any visibly more damaged Necron that we can hope to isolate? GOing after them one by one can make our job easier.
    >> Anonymous 09/08/09(Tue)01:05 No.5769339
How many grenades of each type do we have? Can they be applied liberally, or do we need to ration them?

Is there anything lootable on the Leman Russ? I know we're not Orks, but maybe there's some semi-operational heavy weaponry amongst the wreckage. Or maybe we can rig it to explode.

    >>5769239
Besides if they're close enough for grenades thats a bit too close for mortar.

Have the squad keep effective fire disciplin on the Necrons until they are within grenade range.

Your mortar continues to put down rounds down range. With the help of their spotter you can see the necron attack thinning out ever so slightly with ever round.

You choose one of the riflemen to act as runner. With a message and a pat on the back he sets off into the smoke and dust behind you.

    Results.
    -Necron attack weakened slightly.
-Advancing armour will now be aware of your position and and incomming help will be far more effective.
-You now only have 5 riflemen including yourself should the necrons reach your line.

Hand out extra mortar shell to the guardsmen to use as demo packs (prime them and throw them) against the necrons when they are in throwing range. Concentrate fire on one necron at a time with the lasguns. See if there are any necrons wearing old robes or holding staffs.

Now might be a good time to pull out and find a new spot. Retreating might get us shot for Heresy/Cowardice later, so how about a lateral move? Move in the general direction we were ordered to go, but keep on firing to keep the necrons pinned down.

Lasgun fire rings out. Though accurate, they seem only to annoy the advancing enemies. Concentrated fire however has worked its own benefits. You roar as you and your team down three of the mechanical monstosities. You lose only one man from your position of cover.

    Result of Ranged Combat Drill
    -Three necrons out of action!
    -One rifleman down!

Their advance does not slow. Despite being oil and gears, you feel a prick of fear as you seem them advance with bloody intentions in mind. Your men do not share your doubt. Krak Grenades and Mortar rounds at the ready, they let loose over the wall!

    Results of Planned Drill
    -5 Necrons out of action!

Unfortunately, the time it has taken your squad to throw both their krak grenades and mortar rounds accurately means that the necrons are now among you!

    You fall back as planned.

    Results of Combat Round
-Two necrons have survived and made it into close combat.
-One guardsman has died to return fire, another to the clash of lines. One is hacked down as you execute the fall back.

You and the remainder of your squad relocate behind a burning chimera wreck. Squad count comes to 6. 5 rifles and flamer.

You can hear the sound of revving engines in the distance.

There are two necrons left against your 5. You still have your smoke grenades but you are unarmed. 3 lasguns, 1 flamer. You could take them head on but you will likely lose everyone.

well if they're nearby and hopefully distracted by the blast, we should use our smoke grenades and cover our own retreats. but look around the chimera wreck for anything i could use as a weapon first.

Pop smoke. One at your feet, another about twenty feet ahead, and the last 40 feet ahead if one of your throwing arms is strong enough. Use the smoke to hide you. Crawl if you need to. Avoid that guass fire as much as you can.

Shoot it out, we can still make it.

Aim for legs. Reducing their mobility improves our survivability.

Also, are flamers good against Necron? I'm not that knowledgeable about 40k. If so, use smoke grenades to create cover for flamer guy. Have flamer guy go around necrons, keeping them distracted with our lasguns.

    Burninate.

Have the men throw their smoke grenades without pins pulled to the side of the necron formation and hope to huddle them together, throw our one krak grenade at their center line with a smoke (just to act as a marker for incoming armor). I don't know that's the best I can think of if they're going to charge us next turn.

You stand up from your position of cover to let loose your last smoke grenade. It falls directly on the two last necrons who refuse to halt the advance. They fire out from the smoke with abandon.

The flamer roars a benediction to the emperor before rushing them. He then lets loose a streaming jet of promethium. The closest necron is reduced into bubbling slag. The second one is grazed and lets loose an unaimed shot, catching the flamer in the shoudler. He spins to the ground.

Together, the rest of you unleash your lasgun shots at the last necron. After what seems like an eternity it finally falls to its knees to your concentrated lasgun fire before its head is sheared clean off by a heavy stubber.

You look behind you and offer a silent thanks to the emperor for Leman Russ tanks.

CONGRATULATIONS, YOU DEFEATED THE NECRON COUNTER ATTACK AND THE CAVALRY IS HERE.

The leman russes continue onward without even the slightest acknoledgement. You wave them to them but stop after realising how stupid you look. Your men don't notice, they are huddled around their fallen comrade.

A chimera roars up. A fresh squad of men step out along with the runner you sent out. The chimera commander pops out from his cupola as the armoured fist squad takes up defensive positions.

'Well done old chap, I must say, very well done.'

You answer him with silence and a quizzical look. Where do these armoured boys get their accent?

'Well, don't look shell shocked old boy, we have orders to help first wave out in any way we can. What are you orders?'

    >> SP Y34 09/08/09(Tue)02:25 No.5770370
Combat Doctrine: Start the fight by first popping smoke on the enemy, thus fouling their aim. Then, throw kraks and frags into the smoke. We might be be able to see them, but an explosion doesn't need eyes to work. After that, concentrate fire via ten man units on single targets. This will take them down quicker. Use anything and everything as cover, even if you have to lie prone in a crater. We can NOT be standing out in the open. Too many lives are lost that way.

The armoured fist squad walks alongside, following the bounching chimera as it pushes broken hulls aside and crushes necron bodies under tread.

    Ambush!

The Chimera starts to take hits from necron warriors left over from the counter attack!

The speed of the attack has taken the men in the chimera off guard!

The 6 men outside rush to engage the enemy as the chimera pops smoke and moves back, autocannon whirring out round after round!

The sound of kraks cover the retreat of the chimera as you and your men begin to pile out. As you do, a man from squad 2 is narrowly missed by a bright green lance, saved by the smoke rounds!

The Chimera Commander reports strange necrons in the distance that seem to hover off the ground on extended metal bodies.
