In your deep slumber there were no dreams, there were no subconscious thoughts. What lingered in your mind was nothingness and darkness. You were haunted, but remained calm; the all-consuming bringers of death that once followed you kept their distance, fearful to your presence – so much they dared not peak into your mind. These monsters made of memories… what were they?

“’ey. Hey! … Is he ignoring me?” A familiar sound echoed in your ears – one that is only made when wood scratches against itself. It took a few seconds before the meaning of this noise sunk in to your unconscious mind. You swiftly rolled out of bed and onto the floor, knocking over a nearby lamp and dragging bed sheets that were wrapped around your figure with you.

“I’ll let you boys get changed.” You turned you head to the doorway – to the source of the voice. Your eyes gazed upon a familiar woman and her fearful and seemingly unbreakable wooden weapon. She smiled menacingly at you before leaving and shutting the door behind her. Not saying a word, you dragged yourself to the bathroom; you didn’t notice it until you started moving, but your entire body felt sticky, almost like you were sweating.

    *kershhhhhhhhhh*

You entered the shower. Almost immediately you dropped your head under the barrage of liquid droplets; your hair fell over your face under its own weight, lightly caressing your cheeks upon doing so. “What are we doing…?” You asked yourself. You cleaned yourself in silence all the while thinking of your next move.

Do you continue to the border or try to unlock your past memories?

You close your eyes and recall the events that have leaded you to this moment – and even further beyond. You’re in the forest again. You feel your body’s temperature rise and your head start to ache, but you continue. Without warning, your mind goes blank… save for 3 words.

You haven’t a clue what they mean, but you will attempt to pursue the meaning of one of them.

    “… Who am I forgetting?”

You feel as if you’re standing above and gazing into an ocean. On the surface, you see yourself, but yet… it does not give the thought that it is. A doppelganger, some might call it.

You reach your hand out into your deep subconscious, your hand consumed by the large body of water – only thought to be fictional when you don’t become wet. You dive inside and swim downward into the spiraling darkness, your hand reaching out to the nothingness in hopes of grabbing something – anything – from your forgotten era. Then… you touch something, something invisible, and you’re instantly brought back to reality.

“Marcia.” You say upon awakening in the shower. You feel solemn when you say the name… but you do not know why. Your eyes open slowly and stare at the red water that flowed down the drain; you hadn’t realized it, but you were bleeding profusely from your nose. After a minute, it subsides, along with the accompanying headache.

You recall that you had a choice to make earlier.

Continue to the border or try to unlock your past memories?

You exit the bathroom with a towel around your waist and another around your neck. You give a sigh of relief when you look around the room and feel peace, if only for a moment. You take little time to disrobe and clothe yourself; Kuhn and Selene walk in the moment you finish.

“Where to next, oh leader?” Selene says in a tone dyed in sarcasm. Your left eye twitches, but you ignore her.

“Are we ready to go?” Kuhn said while checking the room in case something was missed. “I believe so,” you yawn while standing to your feet from your previously prone position.

… Later that night; outside Gost Town

“We’re out of supplies.” Kuhn said, searching through a bag while you all approached the outskirts of the dark and dank town. “What do you mean we’re out of supplies? We just stocked up.” You say, shocked and confused. Without saying a word, Kuhn glanced quickly at Selene, whom was whistling innocently, before bringing his eyes back to the empty bag, which he dropped, giving an exasperated sigh at the new situation. “Come morning… We are SO boned.”

“Selene… Did you use all of our supplies?” You glared at her and she responded with one of her own. “Yeah, so?” Your body temperature rose slightly before mellowing out back to normal. It was silent; Kuhn’s eyes darted to the left and right, lingering only for a moment on both of your faces. He could sense a fight coming along.

“Hey, you two, it’s not like we’re completely broke. We can just restock her-…” His mouth dropped when he saw Selene hold up his wallet that used to be filled with the group’s savings. He dared not ask or look inside when she threw it to him. He simply… dropped to his knees. “Guess who’s going hunting for food tonight,” you say with acid on your tongue. “Not me,” Selene retorts. Your head begins to throb while you figure out what you should do next.

You slapped her hand, and by extension her arm, away. “You use our supplies and our money and you think you’re the one in the right? Did Daddy not spank you enough as a child? “I don’t have time to babysit a little girl who can’t follow orders or think of her comrades. I don’t need a liability, especially in the future.” You can tell her heart is racing after hearing your words when you see breathing heavily. She doesn’t say a word; she simply… stares at you in anger and confusion. Kuhn doesn’t say a word, but you know he agrees with you – Selene sees this when she quickly glances at him. “You’re nothing but a spoiled baby.” Her eye twitches. “Go home and let the grownups handle it from here.”

You walk into the dark town with Kuhn silently following behind you. Selene simply stands in the outskirts, not budging an inch, with a vacant look in her eyes.

“Wen… Do you think that was the wisest choice? She may be inconsiderate, but she’s a strong fighter.” You ponder his question for a moment. “If I didn’t say anything, she’d think she could get away with it. Sure, I’d rather her come along, but I’m not so blinded by emotion that I don’t think she wouldn’t get us killed.” Kuhn nods in agreement. “We’ll see what she chooses soon.”

You walk around the town without aim or objective, simply observing it. From what you gather, there is no life in the buildings or the area itself; the plant life is dead or no longer growing. You feel more and more unnerved and uneasy the more you search the uninhabited town, like a weight on your shoulders that grows heavier with each step.

“Kuhn… What do you think of this place?” You ask, expecting a response that will never come.

“What do you mean by… play?” You ask, unsure as to what’s transpiring. You hear the invisible children giggling to themselves, seemingly amused by your question and skepticism. “It’s a simple game. If you win, you live and get a prize!” “And what happens if I lose,” you ask, already knowing the answer. “If you lose, you get to play with us… forever! So you really win either way!”

“Fine,” you finally say with a sigh, the ghostly sounds of laughter echoing inside your mind in response.
