At first there was darkness. Not the black of space, or the dimness of a night cycle, or even the absence of light. It was a complete lack of sensory input. Pure unadulterated darkness.
There was a stab of blinding pain down one side of his body and he suddenly realised he was alive. Sensation came flooding back into his body, starting with the ambient noise of a starship, moving on to the cool air on his skin, continuing to the dry taste in his mouth and ending with the swirling blend of pseudo-black on the inside of his eyelids.
He opened his eyes and was immediately blinded by the bright lights aimed down onto his face, like a star three feet from him. He gasped in shock and pain, shifting uncomfortably.
The buzz and whine of cybernetics greeted him as he moved his limbs. The blinding lights moved away abruptly, revealing the less than reassuring visage of an Adeptus Mechanicus Magos Biologis.
“Sergeant-Major Henric Briggs,” it said in it's flat monotone. “You have been repaired.”
    >> Rightfag 09/29/09(Tue)07:15 No.6059329
Briggs sat up cautiously. His body felt stiff from disuse, but otherwise normal. He briefly considered his most immediate memories before dismissing them; obviously he'd lived, and would fight again.
“Where the hell am I?” he growled.
“Subsector Ralhstus, orbiting Bakhurst. Aboard the Slender Shard.” the Tech-Priest replied.
“And very lucky to be alive.” a new voice said. Briggs glanced around to see the source.
Seeder, the Interrogator, pushed himself off the wall and wandered over. “Ground zero of an orbital strike tends to be a death sentence. But you, my friend, are particularly blessed.”
“The Emperor protects.” Briggs said flatly, carefully getting off the bench. To his bemusement, there was no pain whatsoever. No burns, breaks, tears or anything else. His naked body was knotted with scar tissue and so far as he could tell a lot of his upper body was now augmetic; both his arms, his upper spine, the right side of his face and – going by the surgical scars and the pneumatic sound accompanying his breathing – one of his lungs were also cybertetic replacements.
    >> Rightfag 09/29/09(Tue)07:16 No.6059334
“What happened?” he asked. “After the strike, I mean. Why aren't I dead?”
Seeder shrugged. “Your guess is as good as mine. I mean, obviously there was a massive explosion, disintegration of a lot of soft materials and huge loss of xeno life, but...you survived. We found you buried in ash and dirt, under the remains of a battle suit.”
Briggs nodded. “The secondary target. That bastard took a lot of killing.”
“It appears his death served you well. You were protected from the majority of the blast. We recovered your body and ascertained that you still had life in you. We stabilised you in the field, treated the burn wounds in an Imperial guard field hospital...”
“And the rest was fixed by him, I take it.” Briggs finished, jerking a thumb at the biologis. “Well, I'm grateful that the Lord Inquisitor saw fit to preserve me.”
    >> Rightfag 09/29/09(Tue)07:17 No.6059336
“You are a valuable asset, Sergeant-Major. You succeeded in your mission and by the Emperor's grace are fit and ready to undertake another. It's volunteers only again, of course.” Seeder explained. “If you're interested, join us in the briefing room as soon as you are dressed.” He indicated the neatly folded black combat fatigues on the nearby bench. A single cigar and a box made from dark wood sat next to them.
With that, Seeder turned away and left the room. At the same time the Magos Biologis withdrew into his little shrine on the other side of the medical bay.
Briggs grinned. “Volunteers only.” he said, picking up the cigar and breathing in it's rich flavour. He flipped open the wooden box with the brass etched Aquila.
Inside was a beautifully crafted inferno pistol with several charge packs.
Briggs picked it up in his metallic new hand and activated the priming charge. Smouldering heat spilled free of the exhaust slots, distorting the air around the barrel. Briggs bit the end off the cigar then held it against the exhaust port for a moment. The intense heat caused the head of the cigar to burst into life.
Briggs took a long drag of the cigar. “Beautiful.” he said.

Because flash fiction is fast fiction is easy fiction.
Also I'm having difficulties thinking of an equally badass scenario for Briggs to dive into; I have an idea, but it needs a TWEEST!

I'm glad you decided to continue the adventures of Cpt. Price's grimdark counterpart.

I trust his new cybernetics have not come at the price of his bitchin' 'stance?

Back from seeing Inglorious Basterds. Top film, would recommend.
I see it as Tarantino's big middle finger to 'Operation Valkyrie'.

    >>6059621
Briggs is part of a rag-tag squad of inquisitorial agents on the 'volunteers only' mission who are drop assaulting something, fighting someone, to get something - which they do! But then something goes wrong, so they have to do something else and all options are exhausted. Then deus ex jurgen happens and they succeed, Briggs escaping death once more and left with the glorious opportunity to return to the figurative 'breach' such soldiers were born to fight in.
    Or something.

    >>6059583
Pfft, noob. I clocked Silver like a fucking boss instead of passing year twelve. Also got all the skulltulas in Z:OoT and all the fairies/masks/bottles in Z:MM.

I have...not much, actually. I'm a product of my interests and apart from Ghost in the Shell I've never strayed into cybernoir territory.
Noir stories in general require a kind of complexity that I don't feel I can accomplish - yet. Simple, hard action is a lot easier to manage on a 'write when you've a mood for it and are not studying or punching the clock' schedule.
I do have plans for a dark fantasy noir kind of thing, as well as something that kind of mocks the idea of cybernetic singularities and the ensuing battles of intrigue that the various black ops governmental departments would wage across the world...but nothing solid.
So, heroic action in the grimdark for now.

    >Or something.

    Well that's...vague.

If you want a twist: tie his story into that of Living Saint/Inquisitor Castus Grendel.

    http://1d4chan.org/wiki/The_Guy_Who_Cried_Grendel

Given the extraordinary circumstances that Briggs has (and based on what you've said, will) survive, I'd wager he'd garner the attention of the Thorians.
