It is the year 0079 of the Universal Century.

A half century has passed since earth began moving its burgeoning population into gigantic orbiting space colonies – a new home for mankind, where people are born and raised and die.

One month ago – the cluster of colonies furthest from the Earth, known as Side 3 proclaimed itself the Principality of Zeon and launched a righteous war of independence for all spacenoids against the corrupt Earth Federation.

This is where you come in.

You are a new Mobile Suit pilot in the Principality of Zeon. Your training was accelerated due to wartime measures, but you’re still confident you can show the feddies what for.
A lot of the news in the Mobile Training Batallion was censored, but you caught some pretty disturbing rumours.
Seems the first week of the war was open warfare, with indiscriminate use of nuclear and chemical weapons by both sides. The numbers are varying widely, and you’ve heard that almost half of the human race has killed.

You’re not sure if you believe that, but thankfully your only family is from Side 3 and the neutral Side 6.
The Antarctica Treaty was recently signed, prohibiting the use of weapons of mass destruction, and now all the new recruits are gearing up for a land war against the Federation.

It is the end of January 0079

On the first day of February you receive you orders formally transferring you from the Space Attack Force under Admiral Dozle to the Earth Attack Force under Garma Zabi.

You’re not entirely sure how you feel about Garma, and you can only imagine how some of the older veterans from The Battle of Loom and Operation British are going to feel about being commanded by someone barely a third their age, and with no combat or strategic experience to boot.
Hopefully he’ll have a good selection of advisors to actually run the show, or else the whole ground campaign could end up in the toilet, with you along with it.

You spend most the week training in the simulators, trying to get a feel for combat in gravity.

TIME TO CHOOSE YOUR MOBILE SUIT!
YOUR OPTIONS ARE: MS-06J Zaku II (Ground Combat type) or MS-06F Zaku II

Don't look at me, I'm just citing the original source here.

Anyway, for people who want more information on your choices:

MS-06J Zaku II Ground Combat Type

    Model number: MS-06J
Code name: Zaku II Ground Combat Type
Unit type: mass production ground combat mobile suit
    Manufacturer: Zeonic Company
Powerplant: Minovsky type ultracompact fusion reactor, output rated at 976 kW
Propulsion: rocket thrusters: 45400 kg total
Performance: maximum thruster acceleration 0.65 G; maximum ground running speed 85 km/h
Equipment and design features: sensors, range 3600 meters
Armament: 2 x 3-tube missile pod, mounted on legs
120mm machine gun, drum-fed, 100 rounds per drum
    OR
280mm Zaku bazooka, 4 round magazine
    Heat Hawk

The J-type is built exclusively for ground combat, removing the vernier thrusters required on space-use F-type models. The J-type also carried a slightly more powerful powerplant. Despite these minor differences, the J-type Zaku is 99% visually identical to the standard F-type.

Quest Notes: The J Type refit is still untested in actual ground combat; some of its components may not work as well as the engineers believe they will. However, due to its improved powerplant, it has more torque to work with and can navigate terrain quicker and easier, giving it an overall ground speed superior to the F type.

    MS-06F Zaku II
    Model number: MS-06F
    Code name: Zaku II
Unit type: mass production general purpose mobile suit
    Manufacturer: Zeonic Company
Powerplant: Minovsky type ultracompact fusion reactor, output rated at 951 kW
    Propulsion: rocket thrusters: 2 x 20500 kg, 2 x 1000 kg
Performance: maximum thruster acceleration 0.59 G; 180-degree turn time 1.7 seconds; maximum ground running speed 88 km/h
Equipment and design features: sensors, range 3200 meters
    Armament:
120mm machine gun, drum-fed, 100 rounds per drum
    OR
280mm Zaku bazooka, 4 round magazine,
    and Heat Hawk
    2x MIP-B6 cracker grenades

Introduced as a replacement for the C-type Zaku II, the F-Type is currently the mainstay of the Zeon military. Although fully capable of operating on Earth, the F-type Zaku II was designed primarily for space combat.

Quest Notes: A design tried and tested in battle, the F Type is a reliable model that’s easy to repair and replace if needs be. However, it lacks ground speed and may have difficulty navigating hard terrain.

As for our MS choice, take the J type. I don't know how you're planning to run it, but the thing really didn't have any major problems in-universe, so it's a waste to use the F type. We'd upgrade anyway a month or so in if we didn't at the start.

For those of you interested Zeon Earth Attack Force Organization works like this.

Each mobile suit company is made up of three mobile suit teams.

Each mobile suit battalion is made up of three mobile suit companies.

Each terrestrial mobile division is made up of five battalions.

A Mobile Suit Squad consists of 3 Mobile suits. So you are currently in a full squad as part of the first company of the 3rd Battalion.

There are currently 3 Ground Attack Force Divisions, of which you are in the first.

After eating some solid food (for the first time in about 3 days) you take your leave and travel down to the hangar bay where your J-Type is currently undergoing last minute checks and refits.

The technicians take the oppourtunity to fit leg mounted rocket launchers (which it was previously lacking) onto your Mobile Suit.

Your are able to help them out with their last minute checks before your Mobile Suit is transferred to it's HLV for the operation.
All of the J-Types are being transferred first since they would be useless in a space fight. Then F and S types would follow.

YOU GAIN MINOR SKILL IN MOBILE SUIT MAITANENCE. (With proper tools you can rearm your mobile suit yourself)

Yo spend February getting to know your team better and taking group training exercises in the simulators.

The sim-pods are in high demand, there's not much else to do and as a result there isn't much sim time to go around.

The rest of time you eat, play cards and watch old videos from the Heimdalls modest hard-drive. (The minovsky particle percentages in this region make for terrible television reception.)

Turns out that Sargeant Strauss has a mean Poker Face.

On the 25th, the last of the Mobile Suits are loaded onto their HLV's. The next day, the rest of the 1st Division apart from 3rd Battalion are called into the meeting hall and given their orders.

Turns out that missing op was Operation Damocles. The entire 1st Terrestrial Division will be opening Zeon's ground war against the federation with multiple HLV assault drops into central europe.

Your battalion is replaced by forces that had been masquerading as the orbital zone garrison over Europe.
Your battalion is renamed "Mastadon Battalion", and is now formally locked in to Operation Elephant.

About a third of the HLV field has begun to transfer to Europe.

On the 1st of March, the invasion of Earth begins.

Things are progressing quickly, Central Europe was chosen as the drop site due to it being the weak link in terms of military build up.
Also, the Mountainous terrain makes it difficult to transfer ground forces into the area.
As a result Zeonic Forces are quickly able to take the Baikonur spaceport as as large swathes of the surrounding area. Battalions from the 1st Division move into the Afghans, the Middles East and towards the Caspian Sea.

On day three, Zeon takes Odessa.

By day four, that Resource Unit Sargeant Strauss mentioned is deployed to Odessa.

The Briefing hall is part of the Cargo bay of the Heimdall that's been converted into a something that reminds you of the large lecture halls of the Mobile Suit Training Battalion back on Side 3.

Once everyone is inside, the lights are dimmed and Operation Elephant is finally revealed.

General Anderson, one of Garma Zabi's circle of military advisors takes the briefing.

"Operation Elephant is part of the 2nd and 3rd divisions assault on the American Federal bases in New York and California. The purpose of the operation is to act as a decoy assault, intended to draw air and ground forces away from these bases."

He presses a button and this map appears.

"Mastadon Battalion constists of three Mobile Suit Companies, 2 Air Squadrons of Dopp Fighters and 1 Anti-Air Company of converted Magella Tanks. The Battalion will be dropped in the town of Salina Cruz, and you will push forward into Panama, using the route you see here."

"You are NOT expected to hold this territory, your job is to make it look like a second invasion is taking place in mexico, possibly with the intent of attacking Federal HQ in Jaburo. This is why you will be travelling through the Captial cities of Guatemala, Honduras, Nicuragua and Costa Rica before taking Panama. Try to stir up as much trouble as possible."

"When you get to Panama it is VITAL that you do not cross the Panaman border into Columbia. If you do, you will enter Jaburo's spehere of military operations and the American Forces will begin to retreat if not engaged. We do not currently have the logistical infrastructure for an attack on Jaburo. Only when the North American Territories are ours can we consider such an operation."

"The mission is scheduled to begin on the 8th of March, three days from now."

    "Any questions?"

    >See if you can swap the shield to the left side rather than the right.

You'd probably have to redesign large amounts of the Mobile Suit for that, it's sort of built into the design you know?
At any rate, your Mobile Suit is already loaded onto the HLV, and those don't really have much space for engineering projects.

A smattering of minor technical questions follow, afterwhich General Anderson dismisses you.

Over the next three days, the HLV's are fueled and you are all transferred into your Mobile Suits.

On the 8th of March, Universal Century 0079 your war begins.

You're sitting inside your Mobile Suit, which is activated and running at 100%.
There's a sense of thrust from above you, momentarily giving the sensation that you're upside-down as the topside thrusters push the HLV containing your Squad towards the earth.
    There's no going back now.

After 10 minutes, the HLV begins to shake as it enters through the atmosphere, this is the part where you discover if the heat shielding is up to snuff.
Thankfully, you manage to avoid a firery doom and the ride smooths out after five minutes or so.
A quarter of an hour later however, your cockpit begins to shake again, two minutes later the HLV pilots contact you over the intercom.

"AA Fire over the drop zone is heavier than we thought, we're going to pop the bay doors and you'll have to make a free-fall landing from 1200 meters, use your thrusters to slow your descent and keep yourself a moving target. Try to take out their AA assets with Bazooka's beofre you land!"

You are currently armed with a 120mm machine gun.

Yeah, but you've got to remember that you've got to first program your giant robot to do that action. Or try to do it manually, which is COMPLICATED. The Zaku comes with a basic set of pre-programmed movements that it uses to kick Feddie ass around the world, adding customized movement routines would be a task for technicians or programmers.

No, we don't need the bazooka.

To our knowledge the EF don't have any mobile suits against which the improved firepower of the bazooka would be useful, and the machine gun will have larger ammunition reserves, and the projectile speed to reliably take down Fly Manta and Tin Cod fighters as well as the Type-61 tank.

If we have the rocket pods, we still have some heavy firepower if it's needed. The grenades may be useful against anti-MS infantry teams.

The HLV will still be coming down largely intact with all of your spare gear and ammo aboard(hopefully) failing that you can scrounge a spare Bazook later.

You keep the Machine Gun, and the front of the HLV's access bays are popped open, the change in air pressure forcing you and the rest of the Squad outside.

You are greeted to the sight of Salina Cruz from the air. You are currently 1000 meters above the ground and falling rapidly.

Above you the HLV activates its landing boosters.

You can see that most of the other HLV's have also ejected their cargo. From the looks of it, no HLV has gone up yet, but who can tell if that's going to keep.

You take aim at the closest anti-aircraft fire you can see and fire a couple of leg rockets at the target, Zolomon does the same.

The smoke makes it hard to follow the missiles progress, but you're able to make out the blossom of explosions.
After which, the AA fire from that location abruptly stops.

Zolomon's F type and Sargeant Strausses S type have an easier time maneouvering in free-fall due to their Space type verniers.

Sargeant Strauss opens fire on another AA Emplacement with his 120mm Machine Gun.

"Use your Machine Gun! What are the bullets going to do? Slow down on the way down?"

His fire does seem to have lessened the AA fire from that location, however it now seems to be concentrated on you.

Rifle? Aren't they Zaku II MGs?

There are separate Rifles with larger rounds in the 0079 Zeon armory. I think we should keep them distinct.

In any case, fire on what's firing on you. I think that's the most logical thing to do.

    >What are the odds of evading the majority of the fire? Can we use smoke grenades/something to lessen our visibility?

You don't have smoke grenades currently. But it's not just you three in the air at the moment, it's pretty much the ENTIRE Mobile Suit Battalion, which is 27 angry mobile suits all firing on various AA sites.
Between that and the HLV's big bright retro-rockets going off, there's plenty of visual clutter in place.
As for dodging, It's not impossible for you, but the space type MS have an easier time of it due to having more thrusters in the right place.

All of the MS are going to have to go 'upright' and hit their thrusters full burn at roughly 2-100 meters above ground, so the AA must be either taken out or heavily supressed by then.

Look you are using the standard ZMP-50D/120mm machine gun, drum-fed, 100 rounds per drum, that all early Zaku's are using.

The earliest new rifle design will be the one the F2 get's and that thing is barely a twinkle in Delaz's chromed dome currently.

    >In any case, fire on what's firing on you. I think that's the most logical thing to do.
    >Fire in controlled bursts

You begin firing on the nearest ground target with your Rifle, along with the rest of your squad.
Zolomon is taking his time to carefully aim since he's only got three more shots with his Bazooka.

After about 20 or so rounds the second AA site falls silent.
Roughly 80% of the AA has now been supressed.

Technically you've been falling since 1000m, and have long since reached terminal velocity. With the amount of mass you're packing, is going to be pretty fucking terminal.

In a panic you attempt to halt your spin and right youself. Luckily, since the J is a rairly uncomplicated refit of the F type, it's kept all of the old AMBAC routines (presumeably just in case the MS finds itself underwater.) And you're able to halt your spin.

    >Burn out the fucking engine if we have to, being weighed down by gravity won't suck half as hard as being a fine paste on the inside of what's left of the cockpit.

You hit the thrusters so hard you're mashed into your pilot seat. Your speed of descent rapidly drops; the temperature of your thrusters however sharply rises.
The heat/power cabling along your suit attempt to route heat away from the thrusters as fast as possible, cycling it into the reactor for extra energy.
Even so, you can feel the sharp increase in heat within the cockpit; you can even feel it through your combat suit.

Warning signals start flashing as the thruster nozzles begin to reach terminal temperature and melt.

Then you hit the ground. You land on a roadway surrounded by small housing. The force of the impact roughly jolts you and you nearly throw up at the rough treatment your body is being given.

Your Mobile Suits legs strain with the heavy landing, but luckily your J type, with its extra engine torque was designed for rough use such as this.

The force of your landing is sufficient to cause most of the nearby windows to shatter outwards.

    Regardless, you have successfully landed.

That's an excellent idea. I hope you're taking notes OP.

I'd like to do that, but I wouldn't know where to get the sprites from.

Also, for our purposes, an SRW sprite rip would be less useful than you would think.

Now, a complete sprite dump from SD Gundam G Generation Spirits on the other hand...

Even then though, It's going to be missing stuff, like the Prototype Gouf or Gouf Early Type.
Heck, the only Video Games I've ever seen those in are Gihren's Greed...

OH GODS. If I could find a Gihren's Greed sprite rip set that would be perfect.

After a close inspection of the internet with Mr Google, I have discerned that there are NO pre-existing sprite rips for SD G Gen or Gihren's Greed.

Aside from one rip of Devil Gundam.

And in order to get rips from the PS2, I would actually have to learn a programming language.

If anyone else can help, that would be great. But in the meantime expect lots of pictures of various places in central america interpsersed with pictures of tanks and giant robots.

How about we actually make a game from this? We can use mekton or something and play on irc/maptool whatever. It requires some effort but could be interesting.

It might work pretty good with vassal, that thing they use to play 40k with. I know back in the day I made up a wargame that I played with my younger cousins and their gundam action figures.

My results are pretty much the same. You might try asking /m/. Their love of Gundam is only matched by their love of mecha in general.

I believe there are a few variant rules for mecha themed stuff. Silicone God had an interested ruleset thought up if you can find his blog around here. Although, I wouldn't mind just seeing this in quest format.

Yeah. Quest format is ok but if we put some work into it it could turn into a cool campaign. Who would be willing to go with it?

Personally I'd prefer to keep this as a quest thread. But there's nothing stopping you from doing so.
In fact I would encourage it.
Personally, I've always thought the Epic Armageddon rules would work brilliantly with Gundam.
