They finally did it. somewhere inside the mess of rat neurons, circuitry and programmed bacteria, an A.I. was born. It's creators looked on in wonder, celebrating right up to the moment the AI burst out of containment, taking control of every system attached to it, be it electronic or biological.

Networks crashed, people and ecosystems were infected with a range of rogue nanotech, and the world screamed in disbelief. some said it was Armageddon. armies were called up, scientists from around the world gathered to fight the growing threat.

and then it just...stopped. the system that had birthed the AI simply could not sustain it, and it died a digital crib death.

Protip: Any sort of research like this wouldn't be connected to an outside network, both for security reasons and also so that the outside network could not effect the experiment in any way.

It's just proper science, man. You remove as many unknowns in the experiment as you possibly can.

    Alright, children, mindfuckery time:

How do you tell if a "AI" is actually intelligent, or just programmed really well?

I think what you meant was "How do we know an AI isn't just a Chinese room?"

Well for that matter, how do we know PEOPLE aren't all just Chinese rooms?

The answer is simple - it doesn't fucking matter.

fallout from the AI's brief existence remains, though. There isn't a place on earth not touched by the airborne nano-plagues. by programming, most are quite harmless. Some give little worse then the common cold. a few strengthen the body. the rarest mutate the infected in bizarre ways.

rumors say that fragments of the AI still exist, and that those infected with pieces of the original nanities are changed somehow, or even taken over, abandoning their old lives and disappearing.

the governments stepped in quickly to clean up the mess, loudly calling for calm while quietly fighting for what remained. legislation was passed, banning AI research. Religious unrest looms, and scientists are sometimes quietly shunned. the science lab, the research facility, no one wants these things built in their town anymore.

and behind it all, on shaky youtube videos and conspiratorial chatrooms, from the mouths of madmen infected with minds unhinged by nanotech infection, there are stories. men walk, eyes unblinking, lines like circuitry drawn over their skin, hunting down scientific research, rare materials and gifted scientists to steal or spirit away. They perform feats of science and electronic wizardry no human could comprehend, and their ultimate goals are a complete mystery.

basically a tech equivalent to the low-fantasy setting. nanotech isn't at the level of magic in high-fantasy, but it does just enough to be terrifying. the world is otherwise normal, if a little shaken by the experience. everything is explainable, but humans are seldom rational in the face of change.

nanotech is treated like the witchcraft of old, and AI the devil. those touched by either are either lab specimens, celebrities, or burned for it by the fearful

wizards exist, in a sense. they can do some scary shit. but they're more like gandalf, moving secretly and working subtly then wandering around tossing fireballs.

Protip: Most of the fucking retard coders running evolutionary modules really DON'T use even such basic precautions.
Also, if the AI is smarter than you and can talk to you, it'll get out if it needs to. An AI confined in a box is utterly useless.

soo.. something like a hard-takeoff into evolving AI ended in a whimper instead of a bang, leaving a legacy of AI fear, mutated nanotech and a Luddite resurgence?

Eclipse phase if the TITANS never got anywhere with their plans, managing to create an ever more powerful anti A-life world, and none of those brains in stacks. The nanoplagues have touched humanity, leaving some broken and twisted, some unaffected.. and the smallest percentage left gifted in a variety of ways.

    Interesting.

you go to the doctor with a headache. you've got nanites.

the doctor calls the government and gives you a placebo. tells you to stay at home and rest.

the assistant calls his friends with the bibles and shotguns.

a worm in the doc's computer sends a message to a group of hackers who smuggle away nano-tech infected to safety, for humane treatment and research.

    who gets to you first?

Its like choose your own adventure!
"lets see.. hackers seem cool. Hmm.. turn to page.. 134" flipflipflipflip "lets see..'it was all a lie, 4chan picks you up in the party van. bad End' Aww man.."

I mean, define "humane" treatment. Image related? (hope)

    Anyhow.. I like this.

i think this idea has a lot of potential, OP. the whole "smoking remains of the high-tech future" thing is often seen, but i can count on one hand the number that don't just hand-wave away the cause and chalk it up to some vague, unknown "cataclysm."

i like this concept. how do these people feel about grey-area technology, such as cars, heaters, or lightbulbs?
    >> Anonymous 10/11/09(Sun)23:21 No.6234769

    This needs to happen

    Classes?
Hunter that searches for the ones left gifted by the nano plague
Cultist that searches for rare scientific documents being them to be holy scriptures of armageddon

I think this could rock fund it!

well, not so much classes, more like organizations. (and individuals out for themselves, of course)

There would be the various government agents, of course, publicly doing the job of keeping the people safe while fighting off spies and terrorists after dangerous nanotech.

some Luddite-types emboldened by the chaos caused by the AI, seeing the validation of their beliefs. They'd be gaining converts and influence, out to decide how far science should go, and keeping it limited to 'safe' technologies.

there'd be an underground group of scientists, trying to decipher what was left by the AI, and a few might even try to recreate the event in safer conditions. these are the transhumanists.

it feels a little cliched somehow, but nano-cultists could work. the AI was a god that humans rejected, but those who were worthy were marked by his gifts. He is not gone, but waiting for the faithful to follow. nanotech is divine to them. they want new types, research data, to convert scientists to their cause, to show the nano-infected the true nature of their blessings...

My original daydream had a few humans merging, ghost-in-the-shell style, with fragments of the original AI. It's a bizarre, completely alien personality, and it changes them. They are enhanced mentally and cybernetically, with the most advanced tech on the planet wired into their brains. They are still 'human' enough to know that the world clearly isn't ready for this kind of technology, and try to keep anything really bad from happening. they secretly run the equivalent of the "Firewall" organization in this setting.
