    66 KB Flashy Items Anonymous 10/13/09(Tue)21:51 No.6261378
Alright /tg/, I'm looking for some fantastic and amazing looking items to give my party that ultimately don't really do anything, just seem really cool. I'll post any ideas that I have here, maybe we can get a pretty interesting list going.

    - A consumable whetstone that when used on a weapon causes it to leave trails of light behind it momentarily.

    - A set of candles that all light whenever one is lit, regardless of distance, and to extinguish them all have to be extinguished at the same time.

    - A cape that is invisible on one side of it. Just the cape, not anything blocked visually by it, and the other side of it appears to be a normal cape.

    - Ink that catches on fire as you write with it or the words are read. The fire is harmless and goes out after a while, and doesn't catch to the paper. Possible tattoo applications.

    - A staff that can be neatly broken in half as many times as you wish to subdivide it, and can be re-assembled at will.

    - A vine that will grow to encompass the entire face of a building in a day then cease growing. It is covered in thorns. Adding vinegar will have it shrivel away back to the roots in a day, allowing for relocation.

If you guys have any other ideas feel free to throw em out there.
    >> Anonymous 10/13/09(Tue)21:53 No.6261396
That vine is actually quite useful.

    >A set of candles that all light whenever one is lit, regardless of distance, and to extinguish them all have to be extinguished at the same time.
I'm sure this can be abused.
    >> Anonymous 10/13/09(Tue)21:55 No.6261420
    >>6261404
that could easily be abused. you could light a whole library on fire at once
    >> Anonymous 10/13/09(Tue)21:57 No.6261453
The cape could be useful if someone wants to make a "I can see them but they can't see me" thing...but if they figure out how to make a useless item useful like that, they deserve it
    >> Anonymous 10/13/09(Tue)21:57 No.6261457
My point was things that can't really be used in combat. Sure, most of these could be exceptionally useful in highly specialized situations, and that's part of the appeal.

    Here's some more I've got.

    - A bookshelf that always appears to be full of books. Giving you the look of an intellectual without actually having to have any books.

    - Clamp that can be attached to something of 100 lbs or less that completely negates its weight, allowing it to be carried around easily by anyone.

    - A bag of powder that when sprinkled in the air will stay there, glowing any number of possible colors, suspended in the air for around an hour.

Better to make a series of explosives with the candles connected to their wicks except one, then use that one as a 'detonator'. Or simply to start a bunch of fires across a building/estate/city.

    >>6261378
Those are nice. The staff could be useful as a weapon for a monk or ranger (One quarterstaff into 2 clubs and back again at will) to confuse enemies.

Unfortunately I'll have to think of some things before I can add my own suggestions.

a tiny top hat always floats above your head, never on it

    a necktie that ties itself.

a backpack that also function as an immovable rod

a glass that can never be full, when you pour a liquid into it never fills more than half full. pouring liquid into it past halfway point transports it to another dimension.

a glass that never spills, when overfilled, the liquid is transported to another dimension.

a journal that replies to your entries in a criticizing manner

-A sword that can be sheathed in one's mouth, harmlessly.

-A weapon with an invisible striking area.

-Candles that change fire color depending on whether magic is nearby and how strong it is.

    The Cloak of DEATH.

This black velvet cloak has a skull clasp and a hood. When worn it presents the simple illusion of the character appearing to be that good old Grim Reaper, completely skeletal with faint pinpoints of lights in the eyes sockets. It also uses glamour to alter the voice of the character so it sounds like the hollow voice of doom that Death himself has.

This simple, cheap item had players fighting over who got to use it for literally years.

    >>6261730
the candle could be used to great effect against high level enemies though

also, you could probably argue that a weapon with an invisible striking area grants sneak attack since the enemy can't know where they will be hit.

that's a remote controlled firebomb in the hands of an imaginative player; put some candles under the beds in the guards quarter, the kitchen, storage room, granary... Get out of the castle, sit atop a hill and light the last remaining candle. Open a bottle and watch.

-A crossbow that shoots out a tiny flag that says 'BANG' in Goblin.

-A whistle that randomly sounds like the keening of any animal, abberation, or magical creature.

-Arrows that leave tiny trails of smoke.

-A small silver ingot that rolls towards large storages of money.

I was thinking about giving them an item like that, one that is incredibly cool but is horribly cursed, so whomever wins the in-fighting gets some terrible effect on them. Here's some more I've thought up.

    - An eyepatch that makes your other eye glow blood red.

    - A vial that shatters when a specific command word is said, or under some type of general stimulus, like snapping one's fingers.

    - An article of clothing that is impossible to take off unless a certain condition is met. For example, a command word, a temperature, anything really.

    - Paint that can be used on thin air, hanging suspended there as if there were a canvas or something.

    - a self-cleaning handkerchief
    - a sickle that is normally dull, but becomes sharp when brought within 10' of unmilled wheat
    - a self-cranking butter churn
    - a sheet of parchment which clears itself of writing each midnight
    - a clock which runs even as its 3600 gears are removed, until none are left. For each gear removed, it is slowed by 1 minute/day.
    - a small, portable harpsichord
    - a sword pommel that changes colour on command
    - cubes of wax which, when rubbed against a surface, leaves a blue streak that lasts for 10 minutes per stroke, after which it disappears. Layering strokes increases the time, so 3 strokes = 1/2 hour. Each cube can make up to 20 strokes (or 10 for elite mode, 30 for noob mode).
    - a flower which can be ground into a paste, then reconstituted when placed into the mouth (probably want a flower type that doesn't have thorns on the stem, or randomize the flower type to add some danger). After it has served its purpose, it can be ground back into paste form for easy storage.

    - a paintbrush which, when wetted and drawn across the skin, gives the recipient tattoos of a type chosen by the brush. To remove the tattoos, draw the dry brush across the skin.
    - powder of beard-growth
    - a belt buckle with a beholder image on the front, which can be activated to shine a light forward from the eye
    - matching dragon-scale arm bands which, when worn by two different people, allow them to unerringly throw to each other any item smaller than a match stick. When worn by one person, allows him to juggle the same.
    - a thimble that can be filled with water on command

Reminds me of our last D&D game, the DM gave us a bright red cloak of Fire Resistance 10... that was cursed so its wearer could never turn left.

This was much more of a hindrance than you think. Especially in mazes and complicated battlefields.

Well, yes, that's how it was overcome. However, imagine running down a corridor and needing to spin on your heel 270 degrees to the right in order to turn left. Our DM ruled it took extra movement, which is a bitch when you're being chased by vampires.

Wasn't so bad when the PC started his turn stationary, but it made for some hilarious mental images. Besides, it's a gag item, it's not meant to be taken all that seriously.

-A helm that gave me a glorious glow like some kind of sun god. Also made my hair and beard golden.

-A sword that glowed when near sandstone

-A shield that gave off small pulses of energy ever few seconds. The DM hinted at this having some subtle but cool purpose, but I never actually figured it out.

-Boots that caused flowers to grow wherever I stepped.

-A chestplate that made me appear to have huge radiant wings. I didnt of course, it just looked sweet.

Modern versions of D&D seem to think that magic has to be combat related. Magic should make life easier and safer. So out of 100% of magic Say 60 % (more for regions of great strife) is for defense/offensive comabat magic. The rest would be for ease of living and convenience. You think you would see more ) level items in the game, even in low magic campaigns.

Like feather of dusting, and chest of lower temperature. Thin how magic would replace are electric time saving items today. With out trying you can make device that replicate any one effect from the spell Prestidigitation.

Here is some I have used for chars:
A weapon belt that when you place a weapon on it, it turns invisible until removed.

Portable whole that will only accept "Waste".
    Everfrosty mug.
Hat of treats: Whenever a child is hungry within 50' allows the user to bring forth a edible treat that will feed the child as a full meal.

A small knife with the 26 letters of the alphabet on its pommel. One of these letters is highlighted. This knife can cut through any object who's name beguines with the highlighted letter, the knife has no edge otherwise. Every time it cuts something after the stroke is complete, the next letter in the alphabetical order is highlighted. The only way to highlight a new letter is to cut an object who's name begins with the current letter.

A helmet that turns invisible when worn. Has no eye holes, so may be mistaken for a bucket.

A raincoat that prevents it from raining in a 5' radius of you. No protection against other precipitation.

Pacifist Gloves: Benign invisible force bubble makes the wearer incapable of wielding a weapon.

Shrew's Necklace: Intended for a verbally acidic queen, this fancy medallion causes any insults or complaint to come out as a compliment or suggestion instead. The wearer does not notice on a will save.
