I think we can build a game on two simple concepts.

    1) Ancient Roman Empire
    2) Giant Mechs.

    Doable?

Are mecha really compatible with the Roman Empire, though? Maybe in gladatorial combats, but the Roman way of war was based around legions and formations, which really runs counter to the single-champion character of a mech.

maybe as small units, akin to cavalry or chariot units. Roman tactics would evolve to incorperate Giant Mechs.

My major questions are: tech or magic?

Mechs kinda class with the whole idea of how the Romans carried out combat. The Romans were all about harsh discipline and formations - whereas mechs are about improvisation and more individualistic / small group tactics.

I'd say that they'd be piloted by generals, and that there would be very few of them running at any one time. The mechs would act as a testament to Roman authority, and, in battle, would be used to corral the enemy troops so they can be more easily butchered by the legionnaires. This would also mean Caesar would have piloted a mech when he was running around conquering Gaul.

Rome: Largely small two-legged mecha, most likely just powered armor for infantry use with Fast and Heavy Mecha as support.

Carthage: Uses mostly a moltey assortment of merc mecha for offensive campaigns, or if money is short, an cadre of high-tech mecha along with outdated mecha wielded by conquered people.

Later shows more use of four-legged mecha mounting heavy weapons.

Parthia: A blend of light mecha that can move very quickly, and fairly heavy mecha that can also move quickly but are generally small in numbers as they are the elite of the Parthian military.

Nope. The gauls and goths and such got pretty much crushed by Roman mecha, but after a few hundred years of fighting the Empire, they got pretty good at building their own out of scrapped parts.

The 'barbarians' who sacked historical Rome were experts in formation fighting and equipped with freakin' siege towers.

D20 Mecha compendium has a couple examples like this.

There exist what are essentially giant golems. They were created by the gods (maybe for humans, maybe for their own uses, or even a greater one).

Each one is summoned by an amulet, which allows the user to summon the massive golem and become one with it. In order to gain possession of the amulet, you have to overcome a certain series of challenges based on the nature of the golem/god. One is a holy roly Paladin type, so in order to take control of it, you need to defeat a powerful Demon/Devil in single combat. Another is an aspect of fire, so you have to endure hellish flames.

After an adventurer from a kingdom found one and began using it on behalf of the crown in wars, all the others started funding expeditions in attempts to uncover their own. Another kingdom discovered one, and now it challenges the previous as a super power.

After decades of study, priests and artificers have also discovered how to make lesser versions. While they lack the overall power of the originals, they are still only able to be operated by those with the will and appropriate goals.

It also has an alternate history Gulf War where the Abrams and T-72 tanks are walkers.

The Roman pantheon provides Caesar with mechs to help him expand the Empire and to serve as a testament to his legitimacy as Emperor. Due to Caesar's divine patronage, Brutus exposed Cassius's assassination attempt instead of betraying Caesar.

With their newly found divine help, the Empire is able to spread more rapidly, engulfing Germania, as well as heading deeper into the Middle East and Africa.

Of course, everything does not go according to plan. The Roman invasion of the British Isles fails because the mechs are too heavy to be transported by boat, and the Roman military had grown overly dependent on their use.

Boudica leads a counter attack into Gaul that takes the Roman Empire by surprise. There the Brittons are able to capture a number of mechs and begin incorporating their use in military campaigns.

Due to their successes in the Middle East, the Roman Empire pushed forward, conquering India, but has encountered problems trying to push forward into China. While they don't have mechs, the Chinese are able to field an extraordinarily large number of golems in battle. China has since begun to push back, taking control of a large portion of India away from the Romans. Christianity never really gets off the ground in quite the same way. It still starts up and spreads, but due to being turned into mech fuel and the fact that the Roman deities are taking a more active interest in the Empire, they aren't able to achieve anywhere near the same momentum.

    >a good way for them to fight back...)

Except, there's the whole bit of "But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also." Early Christians took that bit a lot more seriously. It's why they had the habit of getting fed to lions.

Athena was Greek, and the goddess of kicking your ass through superior technology and strategy.

Ares was the Greek god of hitting you really hard with a sword.

Mars got started as the spirit that protected your farmland from frost, bugs, and other outside influences a farmer couldn't really control. Then he became the god of protecting your land and property from thieves and bandits. And then, Imperialism.

Somewhere along the way, he got mashed into Ares. Athena became Minerva, who wasn't the GOD OF THE EMPIRE so while she kicked Ares' ass in the Greek pantheon, she was never much of anything to the Romans. There's a bath named after her.

Plot: The Biblical monsters of Leviathan, Behemoth, and Ziz are real, giant, fucking huge mechs.

Spoiler: Jesus knew where they are hidden.
Spoiler: That's not the Rock of Gibraltar.
Spoiler: That's not the Caspian Sea.
Spoiler: That's not the Gulf Stream. (Guess where Mount Sinai figures in on this..)
Moving any of the mechs causes devastation on a global scale (Behemoth regulates the Mediterranean, Leviathan is a vital source of water, Ziz is the "trade winds" and global weather patterns.

Err... yeah, she did that, but turning Arachne into a spider was Minerva's way of apologizing.

After their weaving contest, Minerva got pissed that not only had Arachne made a better tapestry, but that the tapestry also made fun of the gods. Minerva tore up Arachne's tapestry and broke her loom. Later Arachne, being depressed about what happened, hung herself. After Minverva cooled down a bit, she saw what Arachne had done and turned her into a spider so that she'd be able to keep weaving.

    That's an Athena story.

Arachne invents a new and interesting weaving technique, and claims it's superior to the one the gods themselves use. Anyone else in the pantheon would have smote her at this point, but Athena, goddess of science, says "Let's have a competition and test it out." Arachne wins, Athena is suitably impressed.

Arachne then proceeds to be a giant bitch about it, saying she's smarter than Athena and better than the gods. That's what gets her spider'd.

Athena likes smart people. She's just as happy for us to use the things we invent as well as the things she invented. Just don't be a dick about it.

You might think that, but, at the time, Christianity was much more hardcore about their beliefs. Think about modern day Jehova's Witnesses and how they'll refuse to have blood transfusions even if it means their child will die.

    ALTERNATIVE IDEA.

Each city has four Mechs piloted by soldiers guaranteed to be loyal to Caesar. It functions as a assurance of loyalty (psychological edge, no governor wants to openly betray the empire for their own ends with these things parked at their front door), but the stark truth is that these Mechs aren't capable of facing down large numbers of normal soldiers. They can only kill so many with each swing, and all it takes is for soldiers to get in and strike at their leg joints and they'll fall. They function mostly as psychological safeguards and vital messengers in this role.

Why messengers? They're mechanically driven, one of these can start running and not have to stop until the pilot needs sleep, he will never grow physically tired. Over distances these things can outpace the fastest horse.

When it comes to their battlefield role, the above characteristics are linked. They are fast and act as a psychological deterrent. If you think people break and flee when a unit of heavy cavalry plunges into their flank, wait until you see their reaction when ten giant robots do.

On the Eastern front they have the Chinese with their army of endless golems, as well as the rebelling Indians.

On the Western front there are the Brittons who are a problem due to stealing Roman mechs and the fact that the Roman military at large is more densely located on the Eastern front in order to counter the Chinese.

Though, I suppose the Mongols could still be staging an invasion either through the Caucuses or Eastern Europe.

I like the idea of smallish divine mecha. They should stand between 12 and 18 feet tall. The most agile of them would be slightly faster than a human that size would be but for the most part thay are slow lumbering war engines. Also between the armor plates some sort of substance or vital tissue. So theoretically if infantry were able to swarm over it they might overcome it by damaging this layer enough. Though it would be a feat almost unheard of. Lastly they would be quite rare, its uncommon for more than one to be seen per side in a battle. Most militaries know the names of any mecha they might face.

The mechs are brought to life by the gods, with different designs for each god obviously. Ares(I don't know most of the roman equivalents)would be squat, powerful, and wield a shield and spear. Athena would be more humanoid slightly lighter, a jack of all trades mecha. Artemis would be small, fast but wield a bow fashioned from bones of some mythical beast that is insanely powerful. Aphrodite would would be tall, lean and fast, precise and aesthetically pleasing, and so on.

Sui Dynasty was expanding half-way and after Tang dynasty took over, Tang basically carry on Sui's achievement by berserking its enemies all the way to near Middle East.

Same as Song dynasty with its technological achievement which was carry on by Ming dynasty. All of these dynasties were ethnically Han Chinese, until Qing dynasty which was Manchu origin who fucked up everything with its tradition and arrogant.

As good as these Christianity ideas are, I'd have to agree that, considering all the established meddling in mortal affairs that the Roman gods and goddesses are doing, there wouldn't be much flocking to a new religion.

If anything, considering Rome's conquest across the Middle East, there wouldn't even be any significant Jewish presence, with Rome instead incorporating many of its elements into their traditional worship ala Egypt and Greece.

Roman Empire: Expands from Hispania in the west to India in the east and from the Baltic Sea in the north to the Congo in the south. The single largest Empire on the face of the Earth, even without help from their gods, Rome would be well equipped to take on any threat. In battle they use a mix of traditional soldiers as well as a number of mechs crafted by Vulcan. Mechs come in various varieties, modeled after different deities and prominent figures from history. The most powerful mech: Romulus is piloted by the emperor himiself, and while it's usually stationed in Rome, it has been moved to take part in battles elsewhere (generally when the emperor has grown impatient with the progress of his commanders).

Britons: A small band of relatively rag tag barbarians. They managed to fight off the Roman invasion of the British Isles and make a successful counter attack, taking the northern part of Gaul. Using captured mechs and crudely built replicas, the Britons are a thorn in the side of the Empire.

China: Rome's most powerful opponent, China is capable of fielding scores of soldiers, the majority of which are terracotta golems. In addition to crushing opponents under the weight of numbers, the Chinese make use of a number of technological advances, the most notable of which being the use of rockets. Similar to the Roman Romulus, the Chinese have a similar war machine: The Jade Dragon.

Mongols: Swift and deadly, they outfit soldiers in fast biological suits. They're currently pushing down into China from the north as well as into Roman controlled Middle East via the Caucuses.

christian forces are typically only composed of battle hardened men that have died countless times only to be brought back by their lord and savior, augmented with divine machinery woven into the flesh.

Usually they will only field a single "mech" unit, because to call an angel is to sacrifice one of their own. Angels wield bizarre and unearthly powers even compared to the horrific monstrosities of the mongols. As long as the assault is well planned, a single angel is all a christian cell should need.

NO. They would have the freaky ass old testament style angels.

The cherubim would be epic. Here's the Biblical description:
    >so out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man.
    >And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings.
    >And their feet were straight feet; and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf's foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass.
    >And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings.
    >Their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward.
    >As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle.
    >Thus were their faces: and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies.

tl;dr 4 faces (lion, ox, man, eagle) in the middle of 4 wings , covered in eyes.

Though, thus far, the Roman Empire has done an excellent job keeping them from posing too much trouble, and has even taken to utilizing captured Christian technology to power and enhance their own mecha.

Indians: Having seen an opportunity in the Chinese counterattack, the Indians have started to rebel against their Roman conquerors. Like the Britons, they've started using stolen Roman mechs, but, in addition, they're now lead by avatars of their gods. The most notable of which being Shiva.

I don't get why people fixate on the ROMANS KILLED CHRISTIANS LAWLS thing. Christianity was an upstart sect in the Roman Empire, and was typically seen as a bunch of rabble-rousers. They made a good scapegoat for a while, and so the most vocal Christian groups were persecuted... but it was hardly an overriding thing, and didn't last long. With all the mystery cults running around, as well as local religions and imports from Egypt, the Romans generally didn't care who the hell you worshiped. Hell, the late Roman Empire adopted Christianity as its official religion.

For the most part, yes; however, the Romans had a tendancy to deify their emperors, and wanted you to acknowledge that. This is something the Christians wouldn't do, and, given the fact that the emperor of Rome has direct divine mandate now, I think they'd be a bit more strict on this point.

Here is an interesting metaplot... Atlantis/Zion/Shambala...

Everyone knows that the divine powers have come to duke it out and decide who will reign over the next Earth (I don't play mage so forgive me if this feels close to its metaplot.)

Kind of a way to bring some urgency and explanation to the sudden divine occurrences. Perhaps riffing a bit off of Evangellion where whoever can achieve and hold the Holy City will be able to unlock the root code of the universe (The Masterworker left it there as a backdoor/exploit) and thus determine the form of the next upgrade of the universe...

Since I brought up the christian stuff, little recap.

Jesus is currently a God in the Machine. Trapped in a machine of eldritch design, he is kept their by his Roman wardens until they find a way to destroy him. However, he's turned it into a Ressurection Engine from the inside, feating on his regenerating flesh and blood to resurrect his followers as they die in battle.

Said followers are godtech soldiers, grim battle hardened men with divine machinery woven into their flesh, each one having fought and died numerous times, only for the strength of the Ressurection Engine locked deep away in... let's say Mt. Vesuvius for now... brings them back to life with all their scars. (that probably also leads to the godtech cybernetics, replacing destroyed limbs and such).

The sacrifice of one will bring about Eva inspired Angels to act as their mechs, usually enough to turn the tide of battle.

The sacrifice of the whole cell will summon something old testament-y.

    Is that all?

this armor is not to protect the viking warrior from his enemies, but to feed divine strength into his body and keep it from escaping, forcing it to erupt through the man encased with in in raw unbridled strength and fury. Men in these rune-armors can wield weapons that enable them to go toe to toe with enemy giants and slay them.

Depends on the model. The generic "foot soldier" mecha are 10-12 feet, but the more badass varieties can be significantly larger.

    >Are they machines, hollow armor or built from a base of spiritually infused mud/dirt?

They're built by Vulcan, so metal/machine.
    >> Anonymous 10/25/09(Sun)02:14 No.6422124
Would Vulcan have any help in creating these machines? Say, for instance, do the three Cyclopes who fashioned Zeus's thunderbolts have a Roman equivalent?

I dunno about that. I mean, we're already getting direct divine intervention for the Romans. Jupiter stepped forward to attest to Caesar's legitimacy as emperor, and has put a bounty on Boudica (so he can have sex with her).

I don't see why Vulcan wouldn't create at least the first batch of mechs himself.

Grunts are probably twice as tall as a man. Things like the Christian's angels are likely taller than the tallest castles.

    >Are they machines, hollow armor or built from a base of spiritually infused mud/dirt?
Depends on the god. Roman ones are machines. Chinese ones are terracotta. Mongol ones are biological. The christian ones are probably hybrid, but primarily mechanical.

    They can.

Christians have three basic types of units. Pseudo-necron foot soldiers, "mechs" that are the physical manifestation of an individual's faith and soul, and finally Angels.

The Angels are capable of taking on a large number of Roman troops singlehandedly, and only the most powerful of the Roman mechs are capable of actually standing toe to toe with them; however, they require the sacrifice of an entire Christian cell and are used only in the most dire of circumstances.

Rome is falling, her enemies grow stronger and closer to her heart. As Barbarian hordes surround the dying city, her very soul bursts from the doomed citadel.

The monstrosity is in the shape of man, but with an enormous furnace making up it's outstretched potbelly. The contents of the furnace, heated to a red, molten nothingness, seep out of it's belly as the monster struggles in vain to feed itself with the town, the villagers, and the barbarians alike, all while fighting off Rome's greatest rivals.

Once the battle subsides, the monster sits and rests in the very middle of the wrecked city. It's flames, over the length of several decades burn out, and finally, grow quiet.

Personification of the souls sacrificed to create it is more along the lines of the previously mentioned lower tier 'mechs'. They way I see it, for actual Angels the sacrifices are less of giving up their identity in order to construct a machine, but of a ritual used to bind a traditionally metaphorical entity into the physical plane.

I'm classifying the kinds of units fielded by our various nations. Also, I'd like to suggest a date a bit further into the future for the setting. To be discussed in a bit.

Prime - The most powerful unit available to these forces.
Secondary - Pale shadows of the Prime, these units are knockoffs at best.
Tertiary - These units are cheap, mass produced and widely available to the faction.

    So for example, Rome:
Prime - The "God Machines", the machines created by the Gods themselves. Vulkan's hands have forged this steel into the finest killing machine in the vast Empire. This untouchable killing machine is armed with cannons powered by the fury of Vulkan and the wrath of Mars.

Secondary - Unable to keep up with the demand of the Roman Army for more God Machines, Vulkan instead inspires other blacksmiths to forge for him. These machines are at best, 12 feet tall and armed with sword and shield.

Tertiary-As every metalsmith available to the Empire slaves night and day over a hot forge, there are bound to be mistakes. These plates of steel and crafted Iron are still brushed by the hand of their Gods and provide greater protection than normal metals of the same variety. They are repurposed for infantry as arms and armor.

The primary tactics used against christians is capture and mind wash. Originally they were outright killed but it has been discovered that death makes them more powerful. Their whole culture is based on death, after all.

Unfortunately there are times when christians will off themselves in favor of more powerful, but fortunately temporary troops. In this case one must buckle up and defend. Prevent as many casualties as possible and wait for the lost souls to fade from this realm, and you will have made their sacrifice for nothing.

While these strategies can be difficult to carry out and a downright pain, it is necessary.
