    Regardless, I'm loving this setting and I may write for it. But let us continue fleshing it out a bit, yes?

    >I think it may be worth noting, that even among the God Machine mechs, there will still be variation in strength and purpose. Whereas, with the Christians, one Angel is gonna be about as badass as another Angel.

    The angels summoned when a believer is sacrificed, or the actual true Angels? Because the first would depend upon the strength of the soul that is consumed.
    >> Anonymous 10/25/09(Sun)03:18 No.6422713
    Okay then.

    Basically, we decided to brainstorm how to merge Mecha and the Roman Empire. The result is currently reaching epic.

    The main factions are the Romans, who pilot god-machines created by Vulcan or those inspired by him, the Mongols, who have bio-creature things, the Chinese, who use clay doll puppets, India, with similar machines to the Romans, the Britons, who salvage scrapped Roman machines, and the Christians, who revive their dead into soldiers, or use their followers souls to create Angels.

    This shit is fucking awesome.

    I mean the true old testament eldritch oh god what is that Angel.

    This is why we started calling the other ones mechs, even though it may not be the most accurate term for them.

    I'd have to agree with this. You'd need a mass martyrdom for a Primary Angel, at least an entire cell of Christians for a Secondary. I don't think just one guy killing himself would be enough to attract a higher being's attention.

    Also keep in mind it's not ritualistic suicide, they're throwing themselves into battle to die and become a Martyr for the cause, and that attracts Divine Attention. (suicide causes you to go to hell)

    Let us make the strength the duration of the Angel's form in the world

    so this will enable us to choose only the most devoted and faithful

    the stronger the devotion and faith to God, longer the Angel can be on Earth

    >Probably shouldn't make them too powerful. A god-empowered machine should be able to hold its own against an angel one-on-one.

    Consider this: It is a creature of a higher plane of existence, forced onto the material plane and into a physical state. It's a fucking badass, but it's weakened by the transition.

    I thought the Angels were formed by the souls of the faithful, and their destruction actually resulted in the destruction of their souls and sacrifice of all chance to enter Heaven.

    Or are the mega-Angels different? Like the souls form the physical body, but that's just a container for the Angel-power?

    so how would Roman God Machines work?
    only a specific pilot/group can move it like if you want to move Mars Prime God Machine (well let's say it's the basis of all Mars model), you'll need devotees of Mars?

    No.

    A single christian goes on a cross to be turned into a (secondary) angel. He then fights the battle, and ascends or is killed.

    An entire cell being put on a cross brings about a true angel. All are subsumed.

    Recap:

    Roman Empire is a badass motherfucker. Caesar receives divine backing from Jupiter when he becomes Emperor as well as a number of mechs crafted by Vulcan. As such, he is able to avoid assassination and the Roman Empire expands dramatically. It goes as far north as the Baltic Sea all the way south to the Congo, from Spain in the west to India in the East.

    However, everything is not sunshine and lollipops for Rome. The invasion of the British Isles failed because the mechs were too heavy to be transported across the channel by boat, and the army had grown overly reliant on their use. Boudica marshaled a counter attack that managed to take away the northern coast of Gaul from the Romans. Jupiter, has since offered to reward any man who captures Boudica by proclaiming him heir to the Empire (Jupiter wants to fuck her).

    Additionally, while the conquest of India went off without a hitch, the invasion of China went poorly. The Chinese proved to be a more powerful foe than the Romans had expected, fielding numerous terracotta soldiers, rockets, and alchemical weapons.

    Now the Chinese are pushing back against he Romans into India. The native Indians, sensing an opportunity, have taken this chance to rebel against the Romans, using stolen mechs and being lead by avatars of their gods.

    The Mongols have begun invading China from the north and the Roman Empire via the Caucuses, and are fucking up shit all around.

    Meanwhile the Christians have not taken their persecution lying down and are actively fighting against the Empire. That said, while their faith is unwavering, they're few in number and resort mostly to "terrorist" tactics.

    Doctrine would state that the sacrificed man / men go straight to Heaven and sit at the throne of God. In reality, their souls are burned as fuel to manifest the ultra-powerful being, and cease existing when the transformation ceases.
    >> Anonymous 10/25/09(Sun)03:29 No.6422835
    The sacrifice Christian is used mostly a "connection" of the Angel, the Angel lets the sacrificed control it in the material plane.

    The angel slowly devours the sacrificed soul through faith in God.

    In other words, think of Ultraman

    That works for me. So they don't commit suicide, but agree to be sacrificed for the greater good, as it were.

    >>6422784
    I kinda like this idea. I also sort of see some kind of component internally that is directly a font of divine power, that runs the machine in question. In essence, when the Britons touch it, it shatters causing the machine to break down and no longer be powered. Which is why they have to use the Magick of the Faye to create a new power source, in combination with their own Clockwork to run the remade mech.

    The question is, what is the Briton Prime machine? What about some kind of Redcap powered murder machine?

    Clarification on Christians and angels.

    Christians are capable of sacrificing their own to summon two types of beings.

    The first is the mech or "ascendant angel". It's the physical manifestation of a single devotee's faith and soul. When it's destroyed, so is his soul. No soul, no afterlife, and, as such, this is viewed as the highest sacrifice a believer can make.

    Next are the real angels. The fucked up Old Testament / Revelations stuff. They're big, bad, freaky looking, and one of the most powerful things out there. But they require the sacrifice of an entire Christian cell, and are used only during the most dire of circumstances.

    The God Machine mechs crafted by Vulcan require the "fire of Rome" to be piloted. While the majority of these people are going to be Latin Romans, it isn't a requirement. It's more about discipline and loyalty to Rome than anything else. A person could have been born in Egypt and still be capable of piloting one, if he's devoted enough.

    The standard mechs crafted the Romans don't have any special requirements, allowing them to be stolen and used by any (the Britons/Indians for example)

    I thought it was Prime: Cherubim and Secondary: Seraphim? According to the Wikipedia there's 3 spheres of angels with 3 types of angel each.

    * First Sphere (Old Testament sources)
    o Seraphim
    o Cherubim
    o Thrones (Gr. thronos) (New Testament sources)

    * Second Sphere (New Testament sources)
    o Dominions (Gr. Kyriotetes)
    o Virtues (Gr. Dynamais)
    o Powers (Gr. Exusiai)[3]

    * Third Sphere
    o Principalities (Gr. Archai)[4]
    o Archangels - Archangeloi
    o Angels - Angeloi

    I think somebody suggested Norsemen to have a faction here, but I think that would be a bit much. Maybe if they are included, they would mainly attack whoever they crossed regardless, but have a special beef for the Britons, being one of the weaker groups. Their devices would be longships that while small and fragile, contained some serious firepower, and Berserkers who drink special potions to become titans capable of at least handling the tertiaries.

    IIRC, the Cherubim are more numerous, and the Seraphim are the HOLY FUCK WHAT IS THIS variety. Besides, you'd have to throw out the vast majority of the New Testament, as it was written and compiled tens to hundreds of years after the setting. And of course, different groups might have different names for the angels, as Christianity would be a loose affiliation of individual cells.
    >> Anonymous 10/25/09(Sun)03:42 No.6422974
    Early assed early roman machines should be a more bulky version of greek machines

    Early Roman machines should be tiny and numerous, using rails(rome's massive system of roads) to travel quickly from place to place. They'll be able to charge and bash enemies with their bigass shields, and then a spring mechanism knocks them again and stabs the shit out of them. These machines should not necessarily be based on human form, rather, for their efficiency.

    Later romans ought to be more humanlike, more varied, and based off of Rome's flaws.

    Hmm. A recap of the different things we have, by faction and tier:

    Roman:
    Primary: God machines. Created by Vulcan.
    Secondary: Made by empowered smiths.
    Tertiary: Failed Secondaries, essentially just power armor.

    Christian:
    Primary: True angels. Crazy Revelations shit. Summoned by the self-sacrifice of a cell.
    Secondary: Newborn angels. A single christian ascends.
    Tertiary: Christians. They are resurrected each time they die, and have body parts which direct are gifts from god.

    Chinese:
    Primary: Dragons
    Secondary: ???
    Tertiary: Terracotta warriors

    Indian:
    Primary: Mecha-Shiva
    Secondary: ???
    Tertiary: ???

    Saxon:
    Primary: ???
    Secondary: Looted Roman Secondaries, powered by fey energy.
    Tertiary: ???

    Mongols:
    Biological horrors. No tier system, each unique.

    Mercenary:
    Norsemen: Runic armor keeps their power from fleeing; it is used to weild fuckhuge weapons and kill things better.
    Rus: Bear cavalry.
    Gauls: Potion fueled warriors, see Asterix and Obelisk.

    I think this is everything?

    Those would be the prime, maybe the order like summoning a First Rank would have a greater sacrifice compare to summoning a Second Rank

    so it would make sense attacking a bigger community of Christians would be downright more a pyric(sorry don't remember the spelling) victory, attacking smaller isolated is much prefer

    in this way even if Christians are a minor power, you just don't piss and exterminate them off

    Fine by me.

    To be clear, the Christian hierarchy goes like this:

    Prime-Descended angel from on high. Consumes many martyred Christian souls, utterly destroying them.

    Secondary-Christian ascendant. Consumes a couple Christians souls to temporarily ascend to a higher state of being.

    Tertiary-Christian soldiers. Men who have pledged their faith and loyalty to Jesus, who writhe even now on the Roman Excrutiatus Cross. They are returned to life by their god, scarred as they were in life. Any missing limbs are replaced with divine augments.

    Hunters/gatherers infuse themselves with the powers of nature.

    As society begins to develop, this power is given to a small elite of spiritual leaders, and these leaders use their sway to create gods using some kind of discworld type system.

    Some where around when the greeks were getting their shit together these gods decide to give back, and they regain the knowledge of how to fuck with shit like their hunter gatherer ancestors could, as well as generally help their asses out.

    But, if the boat isn't able to support normal mechs, it definitely wouldn't support the biggest one in the Roman arsenal, and considering that it's the biggest baddest mech in the Roman arsenal, it's presence would have assured a better outcome for Rome.

    That and the Romulus mech is only taken out of Rome for special occasions, which I doubt the British Isles would qualify as.

    They got them when they invaded Gaul. The Romans were caught off guard and clever tactics on Boudica's part allowed them to capture a decent number of mechs quickly. They knew to go for the mechs because Roman soldiers who had been captured in the failed invasion frequently said that things would have gone differently if they had their mechs.

    Mongol Fluff:

    A Mongol warrior's initiation involves a type of channeling that allows a spirit to enter one's body. This possession causes the warrior to mutate. Generally, the more powerful the spirit who enters the body, the more profound the mutation. Due to the wide variety of spirits and the individuality of people, the shapes of the warriors will vary greatly. This leads other factions to believe that the Mongols cannot be divided as they are into ranks.

    But ranks do exist, and roughly work as such:

    Primary: The most fucked up. The size of Giants, usually with extra or disproportionate limbs. In addition, Primaries can channel their Spirit's power, creating ranged attacks, barriers, or bolstering other spirit-imbued.
    Secondary: Can range from 8 feet tall to the size of primaries, but normally don't possess the same degree of mutation as Primaries. The main difference is the lack of spirit magic though.
    Tertiaries: Either normal size with a lot of fucked up limbs, or large but rather normal.
    Secondary:

    ~~~INCOMING METRIC TONS OF WRITEFAGGING~~~
    Brother Anatole wiped the sweat from his brow as he kept watch on the narrow defile. The cliff fort, a long-abandoned brigand stronghold that was more cave than building, had served them well. They'd held out against the Romans for three days, and, Jehova willing, they had supplies to continue doing so for several weeks. Brother Elezar emerged from below and joined him on the battlement.
    "Any change?"
    "No. Since the assault last night, there's been no sight of them. Perhaps they're content to wait us out."
    "Then they may know the location of this place, but not the nature. The grain stocks are full, the spring sweet and ever-flowing. So long as the Romans do not breach the walls, we are as safe here as anywhere." Elezar chuckled. "Far safer than the streets of Jerusalem."
    Anatole shot him a stern look. "Do not underestimate the Romans. That they even found our stronghold shows that they are resourceful."
    "Or that we have a traitor in our midst." Elezar spat. "If so, may he burn in Sheol for all time. And may our blades send him swiftly."
    "Peace, Elezar. Did our Lord not say, 'Blessed are the meek,'? If Jehova wills it, it will be so."
    Anatole returned to his vigil, and Elezar turned to go and tend the wounded, then froze. He'd heard - no, he'd felt something, a vibration coming up through his feet. Like an earthquake, or many men marching in step. He turned back to Anatole. "Do you feel that?"
    Anatole's mouth hardened into a grim line. "They come again. Warn the others."
    Elezar raced below, and returned several minutes later with the contingent that manned the battlement. In the meantime, the vibration grew ever stronger, until it could be felt deep within the rock itself. The men prepared their weapons, as the priests prepared poultices for the inevitable wounded and blessed the fighting men. Finally, after an eternity of creeping dread, the first glint of steel could be seen at the mouth of the defile. Then the battle standard came around the edge and into full view. Anatole gasped and drained to a ghostly pallor.
    "Iesu save us, it's the Legio VIII Mechanicus."
    Several men groaned aloud as the realization of their imminent death hit them like a hammer blow. Now the monstrosities were in plain view. Twice as tall as a man and emblazoned with the Imperial eagle, these were some of the least of Rome's mechanical works. Still, they were more than a match for anything the Christians had at-hand, and would hew through them like a scythe through wheat. And the men that controlled them were battle-hardened veterans known for their savagery. They had just returned from the sack of Persepolis and had nothing but contempt for the undisciplined Christian partisans. There would be no resurrection for the men here; their bodies would be dismembered and burned, their sanctified tombs defiled. On they came at a near-parade march, as though this were a tree-lined Roman avenue and not a killing field. Behind and around them were the legionaires, looking like so many armored children beside the steel behemoths.
    As they closed, the defenders let loose with arrow and javelin. They wounded a legionaire or two, but plinked harmlessly off the thick steel carapaces of the great armored suits. The legionaires threw a return volley of javelins, and now it was the defenders' turn to bleed and die. A few men were struck, and a priest went down with a javelin in his neck, gasping like a fish in a net. The armored units had reached the wall and began hacking and battering it into rubble. Brother Baram, the leader of the men on the wall, saw the direness of the situation and ordered the use of their most precious weapon: several amphorae of Greek Fire. The legionaires scattered before the clinging liquid fire, but the armored units stood unfazed. One armored suit took a direct hit from an amphora and was set ablaze. It became a nightmare beast, a burning demon who implacably hammered upon the slowly crumbling wall. As the steel heated, it even began to glow and make an unearthly shrieking sound. Some of the defenders broke and fled at the sight. Eventually the armor fell and was still, but a dozen more still methodically went about reducing the wall to so much broken rock.
    I'M NOT A VERY GOOD WRITEFAG BUT HERE'S SOME FLUFF.
    The primary tactics used against christians is capture and mind wash. Originally they were outright killed but it has been discovered that death makes them more powerful. Their whole culture is based on death, after all.
    Unfortunately there are times when christians will off themselves in favor of more powerful, but fortunately temporary troops. In this case one must buckle up and defend. Prevent as many casualties as possible and wait for the lost souls to fade from this realm, and you will have made their sacrifice for nothing.
    While these strategies can be difficult to carry out and a downright pain, it is necessary.(WHOOPS POSTAD IN THE OTHERTHRAD)
    Anatole stopped in mid-bowshot. A strange peace settled over him as he dropped his weapon and strode purposefully away from the face of the wall. He grabbed the highest ranking priest by the shoulder and turned him around. "Gather the elders. We must begin The Ritual with haste if we are to have time."
    A look of horror and shock crossed the priest's face. "Surely, brother, the situation is dire, but not so dire that we might need summon a Herald."
    Anatole shook his head no. "There is no choice. If we do not, not a man here will survive, nor rise again. We do this, and we do it now."
    The priest ran to pass word, and Anatole turned and shouted to the men. "Hold fast! Fight to the last breath, and you shall rise again to serve our Lord! Glory to God in the highest!"
    The men shouted back as one, "And to the risen Iesu!"
    The old stronghold was well-fortified, but even thick walls of stone could not resist the pummeling of the armored units forever. The wall buckled and fell, crushing defenders and opening a wound through which the Romans could pour. The Christians fought valiantly to defend the breach but were no match for Roman steel and the monstrous suits, which crushed man and rock alike in their effort to widen the hole. The defenders refused to fall back and were slaughtered where they stood. As the Romans gained the breech, the commanding centurion surveyed the scene before him.
    >> Anonymous 10/25/09(Sun)04:35 No.6423601
    >>6423582
    The wall and the cliff face created a courtyard that backed onto a cave. Christians continued to throw themselves fearlessly at the legionaires, fighting men and unarmed clerics alike, singing the praises of the risen Iesu as they died. Beyond them were a group of defenders, obviously elites, their battle scars declaring their hard-earned martial prowess. And beyond them, in front of the cave mouth, stood a single cross with Anatole crucified upon it, surrounded by chanting priests. The centurion shouted orders to his men to kill the man on the cross, but he was too late.
    Even as he spoke, Anatole screamed and pulsed with a blinding inner light. His flesh seemed to melt away and vanished, replaced by a pillar of white light. The light coalesced and took on the form of a two-story tall armored man with four wings, beautiful and terrible of visage. He reached into the empty air before him and drew forth a flaming greatsword. His mouth opened, and a voice like a trumpet thundered from everywhere, shaking the very foundations of the mountains and cracking the mortar of the stone wall. "YOU WHO WOULD SEEK TO DESTROY THE FAITHFUL, SHALL DIE TODAY!"
    The Herald lashed out with his sword and killed a half dozen legionaires in a single blow. The rest broke and attempted to flee, but were stopped by the bulk of the armored units pushing through the gap. The first armored soldier charged the angelic form alone and was neatly cleaved in two, sparks showering in all directions. Three more came on together, landing hits but not perceptibly slowing the Herald before being similarly dispatched. The remaining living Christians rallied at the sight and threw themselves into battle with a renewed fervor, all the while singing hymns of thanksgiving.
    >> Anonymous 10/25/09(Sun)04:35 No.6423610
    >>6423601
    When the battle was won and the Romans had all died or fled, the Christians gathered around the titanic angel. The eldest cleric spoke: "Thanks be to you, servant of Jehova, for your effort has saved us all."
    The Herald, in a far quieter boom, replied, "THE THANKS BELONGS TO ANATOLE, AND IT IS BY HIS SELFLESSNESS THAT YOU STILL LIVE. REMEMBER HIS NAME FOR ALL GENERATIONS, AND THAT HE UNDERTOOK THE GREATEST SACRIFICE IN SERVICE OF THE RISEN LORD."
    With that, his gaze turned skyward, and he dimmed and faded from view.
    Elezar fell to his knees, weeping openly. Baram placed his hand on the man's head and said, "Weep not for your lost friend, for he sits now at the right hand of Jehova. Weep for we living, who must continue to struggle against the might of Rome." He then turned and walked away, joining the priests in the duty of entombing his fallen men, that they might rise again.
    Have you ever been on a boat? They would not be able to turn, as they would need to move in different (BUT VERY PRECISE) ways, and would have the same wind. Also, the movement would be in a manner which would be literally impossible. In order to tack, they'd need to turn every couple of hours.     Don't the Jews have access to Golems?
    In this way during their early years they were a force to be reckoned with.
    With the arrival of the Romans and their Secondary machines, using mechanized tactics in coordination with their infantry rather relying on shock and awe used by golems then a follow upcharge by infantry, they managed to conquer Israel
    Now the term "Golem" is a degrading term for these are mechs that resembles the Golems of olden times, yet used only in construction and manual labor. Also requires now workers inside of them rather than an autonomous unit before.
    The Golem today is more an amalgam of Roman mechanical engineering combined with the looks of old.
    Golem design have also been limited in power, that it will take at least 10 of them to bring down one Secondary Legionnaire. The materials are barely enough sturdy so when a Roman machine hits it, it is easily destroyed
    A bit of fleshing out for the Mongolians...
    Mongol tribes live with creatures referred to as "spirit-kin". They're bizarre looking creatures with no real similarity or reason to their appearance, but they are considered to be related to humans in soul if not in form. The Khan leading the Mongolians currently has a spirit-kin wife.
    In battle some Mongolians will merge with a spirit-kin to augment their own powers in battle, while other more powerful spirit-kin (or less noteworthy humans) will fight without a human partner.
    When the Mongolians capture a settlement, they allow the spirit-kin to run through the city, killing, eating, and even merging with people as they please. Those who are merged with a spirit-kin are adopted into the Mongol tribe as newly found family. The conquered people who are neither eaten nor adopted are left to continue their lives on the condition that they provide resources and aid to their new Mongol masters.
    Ok, present day in the setting is somewhere around 800-1000 Anno Ceasar.
    In the intervening centuries since Caesar became Emperor, the Roman Empire has expanded considerably in all directions, Christianity has at varying times been little more bands of faithful hiding in the wilderness to controlling a good portion of Isreal/Palestine. The Britons have pushed forward taking a respectable portion of Gaul away from the Romans. Scandinavians and the Rus have united under a single banner to provide their services as mercenaries known as vikings. The Mongol Horde is pushing forward into the Middle East via the Caucuses, and China is pushing against Rome into India
    I'd go not so much for "evil" as "other". They're very, very clearly wholly alien. Their motivations would be inscrutable, they don't entirely grok human concepts, and they behave in ways that the Mongols find downright odd. Of course, the Mongols just shrug this off. (Which works, as the Mongols were one of the most permissive conquering cultures in history.) In mechanical terms, miniature game units would make periodic checks to do something other than what you want them to, and RPG NPCs / characters would use something similar to the rules for sentient weapons.
    Other factions, however, would see them as abominations vomited forth from the darkest pits of Sheol / Hades / wherever, and wholly evil.
    Christians shouldn't have any special tech.
    Nor should they actually sacrifice their own people, nor their enemies.
    The angel mechanic is good. But it should trigger when a Christian believer dies by pagan hand if the believer's cause is true.
    This would mean Christian armies get beefed up only after they start dying. Before that they've got nothing special. They just have to believe.
    The angels would manifest from the dead. If the enemies are driven off, the angels can raise and heal most of the fresh dead. Believer and pagan alike. A victorious Christian army can sustain pyrrhic victories like that, unless the opposition can hold the ground for long enough for the dead to be defiled.
    Regarding timeline: it doesn't have to be Julius Caesar. Christian persecutions really got going under Nero. Boudicca fought against the Romans during his reign too. Nero's probably a better choice than Julius, because Julius was a military genius, while Nero was a self-obsessed fat fuck. This gives a reason why Rome, with its huge material advantages, hasn't already won.
    If the Celts get treant/woodmechs, how the hell would it be effective against normal infantry with fire arrows?
    I think they should have some sort of temporary protective wards that cause anything fire based to fizzle out before impact (maybe?)
    Also, I think these mech/wood constructs should be able to "grow" their own weapons (poisonous spores for anti-infantry, sharpened stakes for cavalry and light mechs, fey energy for the bigguns) but they should also take time to grow, making them vulnerable during this period.
    Julius in his agelessness has grown tired of governing, and lives only to fight the endless hordes in the east.
    Nero, the only living man that could be traced to Caesar was immediately placed on the throne. However, he turned out ill suited to managing such a large empire as well as dealing with the Briton and Christian threat.
    The pressure of this new job turned a simple aristocrat, living on his forefathers' fortune, absolutely mad. Nero now resides in the deepest reaches of the imperial palace. The governors of the various conquered regions of Rome are now left to rule, almost as separate nations, but with an uneasy equilibrium based on the mutual need for military support from each-other. Their beloved Julius Caesar cares not.
    Roman fluff is super-easy. Most of it would be extensions of the existing history. Take the already extant centuries and legions, replace onagers and ballistae with mechs. There'd be some specialist units that would be nothing but mechs (like the Legio VIII Mechanicus in prior writefaggotry), and certain units would be built around supporting one single god-tier mech. If Vulcan and / or Mars is still actively meddling, have them keeping the generals and regional governors in line while keeping them busy chasing Boudica in hopes to ascend to the Imperial throne and demi-godhood.
    Do remember that wood dont burn all that good, forestfires happen either by lightning strike or by the dry underbrush igniting and burning for a compartively long time before it sets off a tree.
    Wet or fresh wood can be virtually impossible to ignite, hard wood like oak is hard to ignite and when it do burn it burns very slowly and is hard to put out.
    Perhaps the Celts even use it as a tactic, cover an oak treant in tar and set it on fire, then make it run into a group of infantery.
    Also, the romans get cool iron mechs and such, so how would shields work for a wooden mech? Or maybe the wood constructs are more easily produced than the Roman man machines to make up for their lack of real defense (kind of like tactics in the REAL roman era).
    The Chinese regarded Terracotta as guard army for the Emperor.
    All sides would have like these divided:
    Common units = fodders, something you see everyday like soldiers, home guard
    Uncommon units = elite units, you see them rarely, veterans of previous battle ; this is where Tertiary rank units go
    Rare units = seen but deployed mostly on harshest/deadliest battlefield most, this where Secondary rank units go
    Unique/I don't know what the hell to call units = means the situation is really fucked up if you see these babies walk the battlefield
    Wargame nation quirks
    Rome: Powerful mechs used to support foot soldiers. They get a big bonus so long as they stay in formation.
    Britons/Celts: Tend to use units similar to Romes, but their mech equivalents are less powerful and foot soldier equivalents are more powerful. Also their units tend to be cheaper all around.
    Christians: Very few highly durable units. Killed units have a chance to stand back up at half health. Can sacrifice units to summon angels/mechs.
    Chinese: Lots of massed infantry, as well as being capable of fielding powerful ranged units.
    Indians: War elephants are good at breaking enemy formations, but are prone to going out of control. Soldiers get a bonus when fighting near an avatar.
    Mongols: Heavy focus on mobility - all cavalry/eldritch horror army. Units tend not to be very predictable - can't use formations. Enemy units fear them.
    Norse: No access to mechs/mech equivalents, but have access to specialized mech killer infantry. Bear cavalry isn't very mobile, but is going at mauling things.
    Attila sat down by the river. Bleda was playing at politics again. It irritated Attila, for Bleda was given to error in this arena. No matter; Attila had a greater purpose for this time. The river would bless the tribe. Attila knew little of shamanism, but he knew more than Bleda, and one of them had to do it. Attila tossed the strip of horseflesh into the river. He said the words that Rugila had taut him before his death. The river spirit would come. Then, on sudden impulse, Attila stood, and cut his wrist, letting blood fall into the river. Stupid. Why had he done that; that was the wrong thing to do. Then a blade arose from the water, curved and cruel. It was followed by a sinuous black tentacle with a single eye. The sword and tentacle writhed forward to Attila.
    "Augh," Attila stepped away from the thing. A mouth formed about its midsection.
    "Please.. your world burns me... Give me shelter in your form! I'll bring you power in battle like no other man.."
    The thing was like no river spirit, but victory in battle was what Attila had prayed for.
    "Very well."
    The thing slithered forward, and with great sped it leaped into the Hun's body. It was gone for a moment, and then the curved blade sprung outward from Attila's flesh, forming in his hand.
    Attila heard that voice once more in his mind,
    "I shall henceforth be... the Sword.... of Attila."
    That was centuries ago. Attila had more of the spirits within him now. All the warriors had at leas one. The sword remained at Attila's hand - what was left of it.
