Ok, so Caesar's bid for emperor is backed by Jupiter, and Vulcan provides him with divinely crafted mecha (Machina Dei). With the newly felt divine intervention, Rome expands considerably, reaching as far south as the Congo, as far north as the Baltic Sea, as far west as Spain, and all the way to China in the east.

But, things are not all sunshine and lollipops for Rome, as they have to contend with the Celts, Christians, Chinese, rebelling Indians, and Mongols/Huns.

Celts: Go into battle fueled by druidic magic, they utilize both ents as well as stolen Roman mechs.

Christians: Dying only to be resurrected again through their faith, these men are few but battle hardened. Additionally, they are capable of sacrificing themselves to create physical manifestations of their faith, or even to summon Angels to fight on the battlefield.

Huns/Mongols: Nomadic steppes warriors who have developed a symbiotic relationship with eldritch horrors. They give over their bodies, and some even say sanity, for victory on the battlefield.

Chinese: Fielding more terracotta soldiers than rival nations could think to match, as well as possessing a wide array of ranged weapons such as repeating crossbows and rockets.

Indians: Lead into battle by the avatars of their numerous gods, they make use of mighty war elephants and the courage of an oppressed people rising up against their foreign overlords.

Today was the day that Modun would become a man and join the likes of his father out on the battlefield. It was the day that he would be blessed by a spirit-kin of his own, a creature who would become his companion for the rest of his days. Needless to say, the boy was more than a little nervous. He'd heard many things about the merging - that it would hurt, that he might lose some part of himself - but, standing there surrounded by his kin, there was no backing out now.

Modun gripped the ceremonial blade tightly as he slashes his wrist, letting the blood spill onto the drawings that had been made in the sand. He kept his gaze fixed forward, not daring to look down at the pool of blood that was forming at his feet, but, even so, he still saw *something* move at the edge of his vision. It was his spirit-kin.

He felt something warm wrap around his leg. As he clenched his eyes shut, he could hear a voice speaking to him softly, as though from across a great distance. The voice was soft and feminine - surprisingly so. "Don't be afraid. I will give you glory."

He opened his eyes and looked down, seeing a girl who looked to be about his age hugging him. He knew his eyes were lying, that this wasn't her true form, but he felt soothed nonetheless. In part because what he saw was familiar, but also because it was a good omen to see the kin's spirit and not their form. He knew then that he would become a great warrior, quickly outshining his father.

So, while the merging hurt, as expected, it was a good pain.

Yes, not full factions, just mercenary factions. Like the Norse or Rus or Jews.

    >>6425959
I like that, but the Indians already have elephants. And Carthage is way under Roman control anyway. We're looking at africans further south than that.

    >>6425979
The Bears are Rus. The other three things you said are all the same unit.

Srsly guise, mercenary factions aren't proper factions. All we need is a single unit type, really.

    So far we have:
Norse: Runes prevent power from escaping, this allows them to wield giant weapons but makes them berserk.
    Rus: Bear Cavalry
Gauls: Asterix and Obelisk, they drink potions beforehand to make them more powerful. They are strong, fast and tough.
Jews: Jews sell Golems. Golems are standard clay contraptions, with the words in their mouths. They do what they're told.

So surely we can slap on an arabic and african unit too.

Jinn are a good idea. They're leftovers from Arab paganism that were kept around in Islam because they're that cool. The idea is that while God made Man out of earth, he made the jinn from fire.

Long ago Solomon bound and commanded many of the jinn for his own purposes; whenever a jinn is found trapped in a bottle, it is likely Solomon who put it there. Of course it's been a thousand years since then, and though some jinn are still bound to rings or bottles or lamps, others have gained greater or lesser measures of freedom since then, and the Bedouin sorcerers often struggle to ensure that the jinn do not act according to their own wishes.

Of course too much reliance on magic and on the Jinn is not healthy; it is leading the Arab people into ever-greater evil as Solomon's seal weakens and the will of the Jinn becomes more and more free. If this goes too far, there can be no doubt, God will raise up a Prophet to set things right...

The only non-Roman nation I can see hiring mercs would be the Celts hiring Norse or Gaulic mercenaries. The other mercenary groups would be too far away for them (with maybe the exception of the Rus).

The Huns wouldn't be hiring any mercenaries because they're pretty much universally hated due to the whole eldritch horror thing.

The Chinese and Indians are too far away.

The Christians -might- hire some arab mercenaries, but I'm not entirely sure on that. Partially because Christians in this setting are fringe cultists, so I'm not sure they'd want to have anything to do with the Christians out of fear of retribution from the Empire. And partially because the Christians are big on belief and may not want to dirty themselves by associating with mercenaries.

I think we should add in some Japanese mercs (to be hired by the Chinese), and some Indochina mercs (to be hired by both the Chinese and Indians).

I noticed that Viking Norse and Rus are Mercanery factions.

What about the Finns? They are in between those two.

According to Norse folklore/myth Finns were Trolls and Wizards with great magical power. Finnish myth also has tales of magical wonder (singing swamps, boats etc into existence, resurrecting and communicating with the dead and more).

The prominent Djinns in arab folklore are Qaren, which are like Djinns that try to goad a person they're bound to into evil.
So you could have some kind of unit which is "cursed" with a host of Qareen and thus granted increased strength and frenzy.

Marcus hated living at the edge of the Empire, and had quickly come to regret moving to Armenia. At the time, it had seemed like a good idea. As a retired soldier, he'd be given a rather large tract of land he could live on and pass down to his children.

But Marcus had no children as all the local women were too ugly to even consider the act. The land, while spacious, was difficult to work, and, worst of all, being at the edge of the empire meant he was last in line for the benefits of being Roman. This was especially salient now that there were reports of nomads from the steppes coming down from across the Caucuses.

Nomads that ate the flesh of the conquered, and performed strange blood rites. Evil men whose hearts burned black with disease and death. They were subhuman scum not fit to see the splendor of the Empire.

But they were ferocious fighters, and the Legionnaires were no where to be seen. Marcus considered packing his things and heading back to the Inner Empire. Maybe signing back on with the military as a mercenary. But, for better or worse, Marcus couldn't bring himself to abandoned his hard won land, as damnable as it may be.

Early one morning, when Marcus looked out over the terrain as he did every morning, he saw them. Or, more accurately, he saw the smoke. The local township was burning, and the stench of death filled the air, carried to him by the wind.

Hurriedly, Marcus went inside to fetch his sword and armor. If he were to die this day, he'd die with a fight - with Roman honor and a Roman flame burning in his heart, but something was off. His home felt oddly alien. Everything looked the same, and everything was in the right place, but he couldn't shake the feeling of wrongness. Ignoring the sensation, he quickly put on his armor, tying the clasps tightly before reaching for his sword.

Then he felt it. Something latched onto his wrist. He saw it as well, but his mind refused to register the things appearance, so he wondered mutely why his hand had stopped short of the hilt. Outside he could hear the frenzied yells and blood curdling screams of things that should not exist on this world.

"Yessss..." he heard someone speak. Their voice was painful to listen to. "I shall take you, but do not worry, human, I shall not devour your flesh like I did the others. You are more interesting than that. I shall make you mine." Marcus could feel it moving across his body, under the armor he had put on - armor that quickly proved useless against this assailant.

He wasn't sure if it was fear, or something else that prevented him from moving, but Marcus was sure of one thing. He was not going to die this day, and, for the first time in years, Marcus began to cry.

Units get a bonus for being in formation (formations vary between armies). Three basic troop types: Infantry, mechs/cavalry, and uniques.

Rome - Get a much larger bonus to combat when fighting in formation compared to other nations, but most of their units also suffer a significant penalty when not in formation. They can use mechs to break enemy lines, as well as acting as beacons for morale damage.

Celts - Similar in a number of respects to Rome, but not quite as formation focused. Their mechs are weaker and their units are a bit cheaper all around.

Christians - Infantry centric army. Their troops are both very durable and very strong, but also very low in numbers. Capable of sacrificing units to summon mechs/Angels.

Chinese - Formation centric, but not to the same degree as the Romans. They field a lot of troops, and are capable of fielding the most powerful ranged units.

Huns - Not allowed to use formations at all, and does not have access to infantry (all units are either cavalry or shoggoths). Very mobile, most troops must take a move action each turn. Units inspire fear in enemies, and units you defeat have a chance to be merged with a spirit-kin and added to your fighting force.

Pretty much what I was thinking. The Jinn are servants to the Bedouin sorcerers, granting them power to use fearsome fire magic, but they're hard to control. Though it varies between individuals, jinn tend to be cruel, and to keep their allegiance the Bedouin will sometimes indulge the jinn in this. Of course the most powerful jinn are the most wilful, and they demand that the Bedouin permit them far more latitude in committing their acts of mayhem.

The more cruelty the Bedouin are willing to permit, the more powerful the Jinn they can command. But if things proceed too far in this manner, Islam will arise early and impose on its followers a strict asceticism and forbid trafficking with spirits entirely. Real world history doesn't get translation into this setting. Here the Romans kicked Germania's ass, instead of losing the battle of Teutoburg Forest. Also, instead of conquering most of Britain, they lost there. Caesar wasn't assassinated, Jesus piloted a mech, and a number of other things happened.

Given the way things have progressed thusfar, there's no reason for Ethiopia to be Christian, and making them Christian would change the nature of the Christian faction considerably.

Although the units of the roman empire are very highly standardized, there is still a lot of room for specialized units due to the rich mythos that they've taken from so many cultures and made their own.

    2) Paul: Converted Jew, great proselytizer. Responsible for the early increase in non-Jewish Christians, before Rome had fully realized that Chrisitanity was more than simply a Jewish sect.* Martyred (permanently) in AD 64.
    3) Petros, the Rock. Slew Germanicus, favored of Julius Caesar, in Egypt. As a result, Nero later became Emperor.
    4) Lazarus: He simply cannot die. Due to his extreme age, he is very knowledgeable and can blend in almost anywhere.
    - Most of the other Apostles and Early Christian Fathers martyred in battle or missing (perhaps proselytizing in non-Roman areas? My main thing is to avoid having like three dozen hero units who keep showing up again and again.)

-Simon the Zealot traveled to Britannia, where he attmpted to convert/build bridges with the Celts. Martyred while fighting alongside the Celts in Gaul. the appearance of the Angel in that battle has led to Rome accusing its enemies of conspiring together.

I just don't like the idea of them being so large they can only be challenged by other mecha-class units. Otherwise what would the point of bringing anything else to a battle. Like a maybe a few hundred infantry could swarm and kill a mech if it was completely unsupported and they didn't flee in terror.

That's true. I suppose their benefit is bringing hoards of Woaden, and they're probably more able than most to bring their primaries into play.

    >Avatars
The important avatars are primary. Shiva, Mishra, Brahma. Less significant avatars are secondary. What did you think were their secondaries?

Chinese should have incarnations of their own gods, such as the Monkey King, Nuwa, and Daji.

They should also have Lung Dragons as a rare form of aerial cavalry.

As for the chinklore: the rather popular icons of the Three Kingdoms era are only about 250 years separated from Caesar himself, so that bit of time shouldn't be too bothersome. While there are indeed quite a few of them, the more famous ones have been quite literally elevated to deity-hood by later dynasties (like sainthood, I suppose)

To pique your curiosity, from the semi-fictional account of the time:

Zhuge Liang, Prime Minister of Shu, once loss a city to the rear of his army's northern offensive. He became holed up in a small city, and seeing the approach of the enemy army (which by various accounts outnumbered him at least 10:1), and then ordered his own troops into hiding. Zhuge Liang then ordered the city's gates opened and he climbed ontop of the city walls and began to play music on his zither.
The enemy commander, Sima Yi, grew suspicious, and assuming there would be an ambush in the urban market, turned his army away.
Zhuge Liang later proclaimed that this strategy would only work on Sima; the latter was known to be suspicious and Sima Yi knew Zhuge Liang to be always prepared, rarely taking risks. Verily, Sima Yi's son saw straight through the ruse

I'm not sure about the way we have the Indians set up currently.

The war elephants seem like they'd be a better fit as a secondary troop rather than a tertiary. They can do a lot of damage to enemy formations, and, since they've been divinely altered, it's probably safe to say they could stand up against other secondaries.

Also, the way they're set up right now, they have no infantry, which seems like a waste considering their high population and status as rebels.

I'd say that it'd give it a good feel. That said, perhaps there should be a particular emphasis on the use of fire; nearly all the significant battles from RoTK (Chi Bi and Yi Ling in particular) revolve around ingenious use of plain, old-fashioned fire for MASSIVE DAMAGE

They would have the weakest secondaries if we did that (except maybe for the Huns) and their Primaries would be among the weaker ones. And we have no plan for their tertiary then, except that it's infantry.

ah, he's an insufferable faggot. I'm not all too sure what we'd want to keep for the wiki (I wrote the tidbit bout zhuge liang >>6430383) so I'd be more content with idea churning than putting something down. I would like to put forth the idea that we rename China as Han China, since this would be the contemporary of the Roman Empire

I do have some worries/ideas about our map though. As we know, IRL Rome never expanded beyond Carrhae since the Parthian's kicked Crassus' ass, thereby weakening the triumvirate, leading to Caesar's bid for power in the first place. From the East, Han China never really expanded beyond Parthia's eastern borders (They didn't really care to wage a war with Parthia when they already had a shitload of trouble dealing with the Xiongnu in the North, the-maybe-Mongol peoples)
With Rome's Machina Dei and China's Terracotta warriors, however, the Iranian plateau between the two powers would not really be an issue at all. What irks me is that IRL relations between the two seemed rather warmer than what we'd presumably expect. Ambassadors between the two often reported the other in rather positive stereotypes (roman ambassadors saw the sera chinese as shorter and shy to public affection but unerringly humble; chinese missions saw the europeans as tall, honest, and handsome folk). Honestly, what could have been if the two empires didn't fall when they did.

    Primaries:

    Celts < < Romans < Chinese < Huns < Indians < Christians

Celts have the weakest primaries, but they're also the cheapest allowing the Celts to field more. In a pinch, they can set their primaries on fire to increase damage at the cost of health and damage enemy morale.

Roman Primaries tend to be highly specialized based on the deity or mythological figure they're inspired by. As a result, while they do their job well, they aren't capable of standing up to everything.

The Chinese Dragon is a solid unit all around, with a focus on dishing out damage.

Hun primaries are hulking monstrosities that are difficult to kill and have big effects on morale (increasing it for their troops, and decreasing it for enemies).

Christian Primaries are rape tier. They're pretty much good at everything - offense, defense, mobility, and morale influence; however, in order to get one you have to sacrifice an entire squad of units, and the Angel is only present for a fixed number of turns (dependent on the quality of the squad sacrificed).

Indian primaries aren't quite as powerful across the board as the Angels. Their defense is particularly lacking; however, they have high attack and mobility. In addition, they give a large boost to friendly morale, but their effect on enemy morale is small compared to other primaries. Also, unlike the Angel, you don't have to sacrifice a unit under special circumstances to get one.

as a matter of technicality, should we really be calling the Mongols as Huns. We don't really know if they're related (they almost certainly aren't as DNA testing of Huns leaves them as almost certainly displaced Europeans), and hell, we shouldn't even be calling Mongols Mongols. They'd more properly be called the Xiongnu Empire, but I suppose Mongols is a bit more evocative.

These avatars don't get summoned like that. Only Christian Primaries go away later. Indian Primaries mostly hang out in temples and back their people up in exchange for [traditional Hindu worship]. More powerful gods require greater effort to interest.

As a matter of technicality, we should not be calling them Mongols. They're Huns in-game. They were originally Mongols, but we realized in the second thread that Huns fit better in literally every place they differed, so we switched it. Some people are still saying Mongol out of habit, but I guess people coming in later are unaware of the situation there.

I think the fact that they've been conquered would be reason enough to get the gods riled up. And since Shiva is the god of destruction, I don't think it'd take that much prodding to get him to do some destroying.

The issue of whether or not you'd be able to get one of the more prominent Hindu avatars to sign on seems like more of a lore issue. Fluffwise, it may only be done for special commanders, but in practice, anyone playing an Indian army is probably gonna field one of the big boys unless the points work out weird.
