Violet looks a little down at the suggestion. "Well, in the academy there were just maids and manservants being trained, and we were kept separate until our final three eyars, so I can't really tell which manservants would be acceptable... you feel that you need another maid?" Her question is asked in an almost hurt tone.
    >> Anonymous 11/01/09(Sun)07:42 No.6519760
Assure her that it's only because this place is FUCK HUGE, and also, I thought she might appreciate having a friend to talk to that she doesn't have to act subservient to.

Violet seems a little placated by the response, but her manner is still a little awkward. Laughing a little in a nervous tone, she answers as best she can.
"Well, I don't know... I mean, there were many other maids who majored in fields separate to mine, but I can't really recommend any unless you tell me what field you feel you require more help in."

You wonder why she can't just say a name, seeing she lived there.

before we know what areas we might need others in, we need to know what field her expertise lies in. So I ask her about that.

"Well, my majors were cleaning, music, table etiquette and bartending, but don't think that's all I can do, please! A maid isn't sent to a master unless she is competent in all areas of her work, it's just that those four areas are what I excel at."

Gesturing for Violet to sit, you make up a shortlist for what you need.

While having servers on hand at all times may be convenient, even the very wealthy have limits on wages they can afford. While you may wish to have them anyway, they could be contracted for specific events just as easy.

While she maintains that she can handle the cleaning herself, she acknowledges that you may want another maid for other activities, such as cooking (if that isn't going to be a dedicated chef).

As for the manservant/butler, who will handle the estate's affairs and run your finances, she suggests contacting her academy.

Most everything else (groundskeeping etc.) could feasibly be contracted out to locals.

"... I didn't make many friends in the Academy. I wasn't invited to any of the groups to sit... but I suppose that I wasn't beaten up on the football field after dark either... I was just alone most of the time."

Standing, she walks to the mouth of the gazebo. She doesn't look back.

The sound of being head maid doesn't excite her as much as you had expected. She merely nods and assents.
"If that is your wish, I will accept that honour. But I don't know what days I would need off... can I let you know once I have an idea what I want to do aside from work?"

    >>6519958

Upon hearing you state that you just won't hire them, she quietens. You sense that while she is relieved, she doesn't like that she is causing a fuss for you.
"I-I thank you master... if you get the catalogue I could just cross off the... troublemakers."

At this point, a strong, cold breeze gusts through the gazebo. Looking out into the expanse, you realise that the sun is on it's way down. Writing the list and making all these considerations must have taken a long time. Noticing at the same time, Violet gasps and raises a hand to her mouth.
"Oh, I have to start supper soon! I'm terribly sorry, please don't get up, I'll clean up and go straight back!"
Fussing around you, she deftly puts everything into the basket she brought with her and folds up the tablecloth before dashing away, slowing to a walk as she remembers that running is undignified for a maid.

It is evening now, and you have a few choices of what to do. *up to you guys, could be anything from peruse the Academy lists to relax and play Galaga*

Indeed, you were sent her file when you agreed to her employ. You have a virtual copy on your laptop and a hard copy in your desk in the library, but both are the same.

Doubleclicking, you scroll past her picture and short stat sheet to her competencies. As she mentioned before she got a blue in cleaning, from floor polishing to vacuuming and dusting to polishing crystal. She is also very skilled as a bartender and drink mixer, was top of her class in serving food and setting plate and is apparently a very gifted singer and cello player.

In the comments, the only marks in her record are that she was caught drinking when she was fifteen and subjected to disciplinary action. It speaks well of the Academy that they would keep that in there, to show that she was given discipline.

Closing Violet's file, you walk up the grand staircase to the Great Room, admiring the Oliva Viktor painting opposite on your way to the library.

Opening the glass doors and turning on the desklamp, you walk to the printer and take the sheets out, making sure all printed. Now it's just a matter of getting Violet to check through them and cross off who she is at odds with.

As if sensing that you are thinking of her, the intercom on the desk crackles to life.

Papers in hand, you follow the hallway through the kitchen, delighting in the smell of a homecooked meal for once before you enter the hearth room. Violet stands next to the drinks cabinet to the side, placing a bottle of root beer on a serving tray and asking you to be seated next to the hearth. The fire looks fresh lit. She's a fast worker.
Reclining in the crimson high-back chair you allow Violet to take the top off the bottle and pour the root beer into a whisky glass before she retreats two paces so you may enjoy your drink.
"I hope it is to your liking, master. Usually root beer isn't served with ice, so I omitted it. If you prefer ice, I shall add it to any drinks in the future."

    [x] Ask to join

Violet looks a little uneasy as she did at morning tea, but sits across from you in an equally high-backed puffy chair, folding her hands neatly in her lap. She still seems a little stiff, but she isn't complaining.
"Thank you, but if you don't mind I'd prefer to pass on the root beer."

You assume this is a compromise in her own mind so that this is 'okay'.

    [x] Ask about interests

"Well, I enjoy playing my cello and reading." You ask what genre, to which she blushes a shade. "Erm... mainly romance novels. You know, the cheap paperbacks you get in drug stores? I just... like them."
Coughing into her hand, she looks to you.

As if to cut the conversation, a buzzer sounds in the kitchen. Standing and smoothing her maid dress, Violet thanks you for the conversation and tells you that supper will be served shortly, so you may sit and enjoy the hearth until then. With that, she turns and walks into the kitchen. The smell of some kind of gravy reaches you.

After another fifteen minutes Violet announces the meal and guides you through the kitchen and to the dining room. The silvers have been unpacked and sit gleaming on the table in neat, orderly rows, and as you sit she pushes your chair in before folding a napkin for your shirt.
"Today's meal is medium-rare steak with cracked pepper gravy and mixed vegetables, with rum and raisin ice cream as a dessert. Bon appetit."

Without further adieu, the maid pours the gravy onto the steak and stands back, awaiting instruction.

    Violet accepts your praise modestly.
"I didn't have much time to do anything more elaborate. I shall endeavour to do better tomorrow, master."
You tell her not to admonish herself before asking for your root beer. Nodding out of your sight, she walks from the room for a moment before returning with a cold bottle on a serving tray. Pouring the beer, she sets it in front of you before returning to her position behind you. However, you see her quickly eye the paper next to you before she goes. No doubt the logo of her Academy caught her eye.

The meal is quite well cooked. You are sure that you would have a hard time receiving a meal of this level anywhere in the village below, and the rum and raisin ice-cream offsets the gravy and meat nicely. You thank her for a lovely meal, again responded to with modesty, before the table is cleared. Violet returns ten minutes later and sits across from you at the table, the sound of the grandfather clock in the hallway ticking loudly.

"I have been thinking about our employment issue a little. Before we move onto the main questions, unless you want to hire a groundskeeper permanently I suggest you outsource a local landscaper once a week. If you wish this, you may leave the matter with me."

After this decision, you move onto the matter of the butler (make the choice, guys).
