They're pretty sure the nobility in general stayed so small because they were constantly murdering each other over the stupidest shit.

Reading about how duels actually went is hilarious as hell. Most of the time, it came down to two guys looking for an excuse to fight.

Women were an easy one, but even shit as simple as how long a boat was or what course of food was better could spark a duel.

Though it reminds me of the most amazing admiral I recruited in an Empire: Total War game. Barbary Pirates blockade Marseilles (No huge surprise there) and I manage to capture a frigate. Noting my fleet lacked an admiral, I promoted one from the aforementioned frigate.

Amusingly, I found the admiral chosen to lead the Mediterrean fleet of France was named Ghiyasuddin Al-Suri. Justifying in my mind how some muslim corsair managed to convince the catholic French lords of the admiralty to invest in him the power to lead and command their fellow countrymen amused me a great deal.

It was a sad day when he died in the winter of 1767, in the service of his Queen Joan, immediately after dispatching a British fleet twice his size outside of London.
