So /tg/, I recently splurged out and bought about 3000 points worth of Rock Raiders. Looking at the pic it seems a little excessive for one purchase, but considering Codex: Rock Raiders is getting a 5th edition revamp damn soon, I figured I should get enough 3rd edition units to last, before they go out of circulation.

I'm thinking of fielding this list at the next tourney, but it is certainly not final:

HQ: Chrome crusher. I have Chief and his command squad as a backup for low points games but for reasons that will become clear as you notice the holes in this list, a Chrome Crusher was the only sensible HQ choice.

Fast Attack: 6 Tunnel Scouts. Yes, I know, I should have more, but they just seem like such a liability, and I still don't really have the experience to milk turboboost rules and such to the extent neccessary to make these the core of my force. It is also for this reason that, whilst I could field some Tunnel Transports as Fast Attack, I've chosen not to.

Heavy Support: I couldn't actually find a laser cutter. I looked fucking everywhere. This means I am stuck with non-dedicated heavy support, which IMHO the CC will contribute pretty well, and if need be I can field a couple of the Tunnel Transports you see here with a heavy weapons loadout.

    Continuing...

I'm so sick of the fucking six Diamondback list that just takes as many Atom Smashers as possible.

GW really needs to fix these guys, when their only viable list needs ~20 Atom Smashers to be competitive there's a huge problem.

Pretty solid list so far. However I would drop the fast attack and stick some elites in. Although that's just personal preference in dealing with vehicles.

Elites: As you can see from the lineup here, I plan to field a great deal of Loader Dozers. VAST QUANTITIES in fact, 6 or more. I'm considering substituting a few with Granite grinders (See left), but overall I don't think they'll mesh with my force at the moment, and every Granite grinder I pickup is one less Loader dozer I can have helping out.

Troops: I have 3 squads of mooks, I'm thinking I'll spend the points to equip one of these with a pushbeam, and 2 heavy weapons squads will be carrying all heatrays and all icebeams respectively. Unorthodox, I know. I have more than enough Cargo Carriers to go around for these guys and I see no reason not to give them Troop transports. I might even field the spare just as a blocker against fast attack.

SAY THAT TO MY FUCKING FACE FAGGOT NOT ON THE INTERNET, AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS

But anyway, thats my list so far, with the Tunnel transports being the flexibility of my strategy, I can redistribute them where I see fit due to their versatility. You'll also see that I bought a Rock Raiders terrain piece just so I can contribute if I ever have an objective game or something. It's a little more extravagant than a Geneseed bearer, but its always good to add to gameplay. Also I clandestinely hope the fact that it can be garrisoned will help my otherwise fragile infantry.

Also, just a side note: Rock Raiders seemed a little underrepresented in Dawn of War. I mean sure they had a mission dedicated to them, but most players never got it due to its esoteric unlock conditions. At least they had limited multiplayer support. And I can't complain that they seemed the least misrepresented race in Dawn of war, their story was actually pretty close to canon.

Technically I could get the captain for each of the standard troops one... thats three right there for starters. The problem with that is that I don't actually intend to send these guys anywhere near enemies, they are shooty after all, and if you pay for those orange chainsaws you suddenly have an obligation to use them in order to recoup the points cost.

Looking in the Codex, there is actually a sweet build where, for an abnormally high point cost, you can set up a small digger with not one but FOUR orange chainsaws. I have a couple of small diggers around but they weren't in the photo. I'm thinking I might ditch 3 tunnel scouts, and replace them with small diggers using that set up. I'll use them as suicide CC units, theres no way anything that fragile will survive a round of CC with anything competent, but even mediocre rolls after I charge them into an enemy formation should allow them to more than recoup their points before they are destroyed.

    Fuck Pirates.
It never made any sense that their Blackpowder Pistols rules made them armour piercing, but just because Cowboy's get Sixshooters that can Rapid Fire, they lose the Piercing ability - It means Knights get absolutely nerfed against Pirates, but against the other (half-)cavalry specialist army (Cowboys), they fucking rape all over the table.
It takes all strategy out of the game - at tournaments I might as well play Rock-Paper-Scissors at the opponent selecting stage rather than turn up wit an army.

    I sympathise, seriously.
I mean, we (Undead) got a few expanded list options (new colours of Dragon or something, and a couple of new constructs) but they took away the option to integrate Black Knights into the army - now they have to be allies, which doesn't make any fluff sense!
I used to have my Wizard Arnzipel and his cadre of Black Knight officers, met and impelled to serve him during Arnzipel's travels across the Dark Mountains, leading a mounted horde army of Armoured Skeletal Warriors.
Now, my skeletons can't use the Black Knights' Ld, and it's all fucked.

Key fact: Every single Rock Raiders unit except LD's and Cargo Carriers is capable of deep striking with the right loadout. Even infantry. I mean not that I would ever actually excercise that given that Power drills for infantry nearly doubles their point cost and they usually take way too many turns to strike in, but its always a possibility.

As it is I plan to spam deepstriking small diggers and due to the minimum troop requirements there is nothing you can do to keep enough of your forces out of reach to prevent phase out. Yes, its a cheap strategy, but I see no shame in using it on what is clearly a cheese list.

You know I've always wondered whether there is meant to be some kind of implied plot connection between the Insectoids and Rock Raiders. The Insectoids power all of their gear using what look like energy crystals as well, but theirs seem to be synthetically produced rather than naturally grown and harvested. I'd have to assume their massive numbers of solar sails and the like provide the power for the process, but it just seems woefully inefficient when they could just mine for them. I mean it is POSSIBLE to find Energy crystals outside of Planet U even if the fact that the Rock Raiders have a third of their fleet guarding it was discouraging.

What if the Insectoids are the eventual fate of the Rock Raiders? The Anti-spirals to their Gurren brigade as it were. With respect to mining though, so maybe not such a great analogy.

Early concept art for Rock Raiders. Looks like everything but the Chrome Crusher has changed from then, although now that its brought up I could have SWORN I have seen that weird version of a Tunnel scout somewhere. Maybe its Jet's personal scout?

In fact, looking at this art it looks like original Rock Raiders were going to be STEAMPUNK. They still are to vestigial extent, but they have Raiders running around down there with SCARVES. Planet U's atmosphere is NOT SAFELY BREATHABLE.

I like the monolith thing they have going on in the background there, some might say "Why would you need a bulkier HQ choice?" but my answer is that the HQ can NEVER be too bulky. That thing isn't going to enter CC with a Hive tyrant. Its going to run the fucking thing over.

Slight change of topic...I recently ran QuikWars at my FLGS.

It took five hours and ended up with one side's Titan(hero/mech)'s reactor going critical and causing a draw.

My opponent took a sniper-heavy army, so I'm glad I made the reactor blow.
