    GENTLEMEN WHERE IS YOUR ZAKU?

You are David Lister, ace pilot of MASTODON BATTALION currently travelling east in New Mexico.

Last time we had just seen off sunset raid by Federation forces, including one highly annoying newtype in a Saberfish.
To add insult to injury were pretty sure that the guy's only got one arm, and he got us to help him load up his truck with booze for him the day before.

STARTING THREAD EARLIER DUE TO NOT HAVING SUNDAY'S FREE AS I'LL BE PLAYING V:TM IN CAMBRIDGE ON SUNDAYS FROM NOW ON.

Your base of operations is the Dabude class land battleship: The Roter Mond, where overall Battalion command falls to Captain Dirk Fontaine.
During your previous mission in Operation Elephant he captained a Gallop MSV, but it slightly exploded*.

You are currently under orders to meet back up with allied forces travelling south from New York.

    * Well, as nuclear explosions go, it WASN'T all that big.

You have just finished a two day stint of R&R in the New Mexican resort town of Truth and Consequences are now heading east... towards Roswell.

You are currently piloting an MS-06J Zaku II (Ground Type) With Leg Rockets, a 120mm MG, reloads and Cracker Grenades.

Your CO is Sergeant Major WOLFGANG STRAUSS, One Week War and Loum veteran.
    He currently pilots a:
MS-06S Zaku II (Commanders type) with a Magella Cannon + Reloads

Your wingman is ZOLOMON RINGO, nowhere near as good a ladies man as he thinks he is, destroyer of worlds with a heat hawk.
    He currently pilots a:
MS-06F Zaku II with 120mm Machine Gun (Plus Reloads) and 2x Heat Hawks.

After the battle with Federation forces, Mastodon Battalion decides to move off, heading easterly towards Roswell.
The plan is to circumvent the mountains by going north, around them and then heading back into the town.
The Detour means that you probably wont reach Roswell until morning.
After reloading, the three of you are on support ring, travelling in close with the Roter Mond, either to defend it from attacks that pierce the outer patrol ring, or to support said patrol ring against concentrated ground attacks. You in your semi-customised Zaku (pic related.)

It is currently 7pm, and night is coming.

Man, there goes my plan to get an early start in and finish early enough to get a decent nights sleep.

Well, regardless, here are your current options:

    One of the following
120mm ZMP-50D Zaku Machine Gun (100 Round Drum)
240mm Bazooka (4 Shots per reload)
    175mm HT-01B Magella Attack cannon

In push situations it's possible to carry two of either, or possibly two of the same weapon. But the extra weight strains the Mobile Suits frame, and firing two weapons at the same time stresses the arm actuators due to the recoil (to say nothing in the loss in accuracy.)

Each Hardpoint on the hip has been improved to hold up to 4 reloads for the main weapon, a Heat Hawk, or four MIP-B6 cracker grenades.
It may also support the weight of a 120mm Machine Gun, but it must have it's ammo drum removed first to stop it from interfering with the arms traverse.

The Rear Hardpoint can be used to fit a main weapon or heat hawk, and often swaps between the two.

Each Leg mounted rocket launcher has a catch for a single reload of the main weapon.

Your Mobile Suit's shield has been changed into a Boxer Shield, for enhanced defence and assault.

Panzerfausts will not be invented until much later in the war.

I'm not sure if the Tech are going to let load up with all of those guns for no reason. You don't have a supply train, and guns are at a premium (ammo luckily is fairly plentiful for now. But another situation like Salina Cruz and you might run out.)
Also, there's a maintance aspect, carrying that many weapons and ammo will strain the fuck out of the actuators, meaning more possibly needless time in the Roter Mond getting repaired.

What do you say to convince them to give you it? Keeping in mind that you can only trade on your Ace status so many times, and you are TECHINCALLY still just a corporal.

Grab extra magazines and either duct tape the magazine to the leg/arm/torso/etc (You'd be surprised what one can hold up with ten rolls of duct tape OR weld/bolt one or two extra ammo carrying racks/rails to hold ammunition on. Basically, what I'm saying here is that we need to increase our ammunition capacity. Also try to grab some spare food to keep in the cockpit.

    Inform them that:

    a) The Federation have some kind of weird shit going down with planes that WILL NOT DIE
    b) We are horribly outgunned and outnumbered, and as a result if we should be attacked by the wrong kind of enemies then we'll lose for sure. Equipping a Zaku with every kind of weapon means it will not be helpless, if, for example, we run into a hard target when expecting fighters.
    c) If it's absolutely impossible, then drop the Magella cannon because that's probably the least useful.

Luckily you've been friendly with one of the techs who works with your Suits and your able to convince Ookawara to equip your MS with a Bazzoka (Back Plate) and a hip mounted MG. You both decide to ditch the Hawk since you can make do with the punch shield, and use the other hip point to hold two reloads for each weapon.

Your rocket launchers have a MG Drum and a Bazooka reload attatched to them.

You haven't the space to fit a Magella, and it's possible that you might overload the machine if you did.

    YOUR CURRENT LOADOUT:
1 Zaku Machinegun (Unloaded) (3 Ammo Drums)
    1 240mm Bazooka (4 Shots) (3 Reloads)
    Boxer Shield

    Is this fine?

    >Find out if anyone knows what's going on where we're going.

On the way to your bunks you ask Strauss if he knows why were going directly to Roswell instead of taking the main road to Alberquerque. He visibly resists the urge to do a Bugs Bunny impression and shrugs.

"Not a clue, which might mean we've got to pull some spooks ass out of the fire again.... What fun." he deadpans.

"It wasn't so bad, I mean we had a pretty hairy chase scene on a motorbike but that was it." Zolomon pipes up.

"For YOU guy's, we had to fucking storm the presidents apartment, try to talk him into giving us our men back, and then watching Incognito murder every single earthnoid in the room when he said no."

With nothing more to say, the three of you retire to your quarters, you set your alarm for 6:00 am.

You are woken up at 2:00.
But not by your alarm but the red-alert/general quarters alarm. You can hear explosions outside of the vessel.

You all get up, your fine if a little groggy and tired from lack of sleep. Still you're more or less used to only having five hours of sleep thanks to Operation Elephant.
You quickly scramble on some clothes and run to the MS bay to try and get a handle on the situation.
As you reach it, you can hear the staccatto of the Roter Mond's medium artillery turrets firing. You quickly reach Ookawara as he's overseeing squad 2 of First Company out of the door.
You can see a heavy firefight going on, both on the ground and in the air.

"What happened!" you yell over the din.

"Heavy Federation forces, at least three full battalions! No Battleships, but were looking at a lot of tanks and air-forces! The Lugguns reported at least two wings of Depp Roggs orbiting just outside the minovsky field!"

As you exit the Roter Mond you spot a squad of five Federation Tanks attack a retreating group of your Magella Tanks.
You quickly dash up to the nearest one and kick it just right to lift into the air. You then bring your Boxer Shield down and attempt to punch it into another enemy tank. The Tank crumples with the force of your blow and narrowly misses the target you were aiming for.
You've still however managed to draw their attention away from the Magella's they were attacking by having your giant robot skeleton leap into their midst.

Kick! Punch! It's all in the mind!

Unofrtunately, you 120mm Gun is still by your side, and currently not loaded. Instead you fire off a salvo from your leg rockets into the group. Explosions and great plumes of dirt follow obscuring you from them. Innaccurate return fire follows and you pull out your loaded Bazooka and start using those shots as a sort of reverse tracer to help your fire.

You fire two rockets into the smoke and are rewarded by the sounds of yet more explosions. Zolomon and Strauss have caught up with you now.
The smoke clears revealing the wreckage of five tanks.

    KILLS:
    You: 5 Tanks.

A furious aeriel battle between Federation fighters and Dopps and Dodai riding Zaku's is going on in the night sky above you. There is 0% cloud cover and a full moon. Visiblity across the battlefield is good, and there are two Starburst flares in the air for added visibility.

    >contact the roter mond and find out where the bulk of enemy ground forces are, then take this 2nd squad with us and flank the heaviest concentration of enemies.
Make sure to stay inside the minovsky field while flanking. Keep the squads a small distance apart so as not to appear as a large force that draws attention

Strauss get's into contact with the Roter Mond on laser comm.

It seems that the Bombers waiting to see if the fighters can cause a significant enough damage to our air cover to allow them to make a bombing run. The tanks don't appear to want to risk heavy losses and will retreat if they think the situation is untenable. The fighters seem to be little more willing to stick in the fight. Presumeably because our Dopps have a higher top speed and can catch them if they try to run.
There are however, less planes than there are tanks.
(No sign of the newtype just yet.)
If you wish to aid the air forces the Roter Mond DOES have enough Dodai's to mount another whole company if needs be.

    You mean this?

Yeah, the Dodai doesn't so much have guns as a small bomb bay, and whilst your riding it the MS pilot has control.
Speaking of which. The three of you swoop into the skies to lend your support. You keep in close formation and take out several enemy planes on your first pass.
The three of you then split up to take targets of oppourtunity.

In the melee you spot a pair of Saberfishes shoot down a Dopp and you spray their direction with 120mm shells the first explodes, the second loses and engine and begins to lose altitude. Three Dopp, like flying metal pihrana's gang up on it and it too explodes in a shower of bullets and unguided rockets.

    >Can the Zaku's Pod Missiles and/or Bazooka Rockets be set to detonate on a proximal or timed fuse?

No, in order for them to work properly in a high minovsky environment without a shitton of electronics shielding almost all weapons work on basic low tech principles. Magella flak shells DO have this, but they need specialised turrets for that, and it's just a basic air pressure valve magnetically set to a certain value.
Trying to use too high tech munitions was what happened with some of the Depp Roggs over Salina Cruz, they tried to drop computerised smart munitions to scatter cluster bombs at a certain height, the M-Particles got to them and caused them to explode right there in the bomb bay - BOOM.

You swoop around and catch another Fly Manta with your machine gun. Bullets and rockets craze the sky around you, it looks like an enemy Saberfish is in your six and looking for revenge!

Normally pulling an over the shoulder shot using only the rear cameras would be next to impossible due to the back camera not being synced in with the rifle targeter. Neverletheless you swing your arm over and and using the position of the gun as a guide fire off a salvo.

    IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE!

Most of the shells hit the armour causing it to crumple and fall off. One manages to hit the rocket pod full on causing it to explode. The entire fighter planes follows, the pilot has just enough time to pull the eject lever before the cockpit goes up as well.

You try to open a comm to the pilot of your Dodai repeatedly with no response, you keep trying to pull the heavy plate like plane into the right position but it keeps bucking in the air currents and you cant quite...

    >Get a...cannon... Start blasting Ride... Get moving, start killing. [at] Zaku Keep firing until it looks like Sinai, '67.

Almost on instinct you disengage the magnetic locks and push off your Dodai. The first high velocity cannon shot rips through empty air, had you kept your position it would have hit you in the upper back, penetrating your rear armour and rupturing your thermonuclear fusion reactor.
The shell was 120mm, fired near straight up.
Half a second later the second shot, intended for the Dodai only clips it due to its changed position. It spins, belching black smoke and goes nose down.
The engines restart and you hear the pilot cry "Ejecting" before he makes his successful escape.

You aim downwards with your Bazooka and fire in the direction the shot came from. You manage to just avoid the next shot from whatever's firing down there.

Wait what? That's a Zaku MG shot. The Type 61's have 155mm cannons, as well as elevation issues. Shit, don't tell me they've captured some Zakus already.

It wasn't a machine gun shot. It was an Anti-Armour kinetic penetrator fired from a Low Recoil Rifle. Think of it as a slightly smaller version of the Magella's conventional shells.

You try to zoom in and get a bead on the target, a heat bloom from your Bazooka makes the IR unhelpful, and even with the full moon you can't see properly even at full magnification.

What you can see however is the squad of tanks trying to second guess your landing position.
    Ha!

You swap your Bazooka with your Machine Gun and start to aim at the tanks. You start firing at them whilst trying to aim you landing to be right on top of one.

More out of curiosity than anything else, since I don't remember anything with 120mm AP shells that wasn't a Zaku MG in this era. Also, the Type-61s turrets can't elevate high enough to do what it just did to us, so there /must/ be something else down there.

You land on top of a tank, your thrusters on full power. They handle the strain much more comfortably than your old ones, you'll have to thank Ookawara later.
You land on top of a tank, crushing then melting it with your thrusters. The dust cloud raised by your arrival once again obscures you. Before the Tanks can target you with their turrets you leap upwards on your thrusters again. You fire your MG at a tank causing it to explode.
Unfortunately these experienced tank pilots know better than to bunch up, and you don't make any more kills before you land.
You quickly dash to the side to avoid incoming shells and take out another tanks at close range with the last of the ammo in your MG.
You detatch your ammo drum and hurl it at another tank.
By pure luck it hits and warps one of the tanks cannons just before it was to fire and the turret explodes as the live shell jams itself in the barrel.
You grab a second ammo drum from your hips as you leap into the air, firing the last of your rockets in the remaining tanks general direction. You don't think you hit any, but it gave you time to reload.
You land and try to close the distance again, you notice that one of the tanks must have been too close to your rockets and had broken it's track. You quickly finish it off with a couple of shots from your MG.
You manage to catch a pair of shells fomr the last tank with your shield and return fire. Most of the shots go wide, but so do his. You eventaully take out it's left tracks causing it to spin around unexpectedly, it nearly flips itself in the process and you are able to get to melee range and finish it off with the Shield, finishing of the Tank squad.

    KILLS: 5 Tanks.

As you run towards the base the sky blooms in a gigantic fireball, another one of those MOAB carrying Bombers must have been taken out. The firing seems to be dying down, and travelling further away from the Roter Mond, evidently the enemy forces are in retreat now.

"You see, when we landed initially at Salina Cruz, we were behind schedule and moved off towards Panama without salvaging two of our mobile suits which failed to land successfully. When we returned those mobile suits were gone, their booby traps disarmed. When we discovered this the intelligence contingent aboard the Prancer reported it to high command when they reached the orbital zone and we began to look into it. Actually, Area 51 it turns out is in Arizona, were in New Mexico heading east.
Roswell was where the Aliens crashed.
Area 51 is where the military took the remains. (Which is in Arizona)

    Anyway

Fontaine takes over the briefing again.

"We only learnt of the facility recently from intelligence gained from our newly made Costa Rican allies..."

"Speaking of Costa Rica, are we looking at another sneaking mission like San Jose sir?"

    Strauss interjects, Jordain answers.

"No. At this stage in the war, they've probably already salvaged several other Zaku chassis from various battlefield theatres across the world. What were more interested is in destroying what research progress they've made in mobile suit construction and use. This is why we've been heading towards Roswell, to storm that base and destroy those files. We already have Intelligence Assets in place on the facility, but he'll need a distraction to enter the restricted area and gain access to the files, which tommorow we will provide."

    Fontaine takes off again

"Unfortunately, the Federation already knows this and has probably already begun evacuating key personell and moveable equipment. However are asset doesn't beleive they'll have the time to evacuate close to 10% of their materials with the air assets currently avaiable to them. All signs are that they have zero Medea Air Transports available to them, as they had been sent up to the front, and destroyed by the Zeonic 2nd and 3rd divisions."

"What are our orders if we encounter the Captured Mobile Suit again? Recapture?"

"No. You can destroy it on sight."

Looks like we need to go over anti-MS tactics with the squad, in detail. Apply what we know about Zakus weaknesses, and maybe come up with some creative exploits.

    Okay:
The mobile suits advantage is human movement, AMBAC, and multiple weapon loadouts.

The feddies will have few captured MS-scale weapons.
We should aim for the legs or sensors. Blinding or immobilizing an MS makes it an easier target.

Indeed, and we should arm up with Bazookas. They should have enough punch to cripple or destroy an MS with 1 hit.

Well, how much plot armor do our enemies have? If they do have some, we may have to settle for damaging them before they escape.

Zakus have an unprotected hydraulic hose on the exterior of each of their legs. If we currently have the skill, target and fire upon these hoses. That would severely cripple the enemy suit.

Holy Carp it's already got two votes too!

You know there was a section where all of the Zeonquest parts were a nice shade of Zeon Green?

Then people kept on voting for them!

Actually, I'm going with Mark Simmons theory that those tubes are actually heat and electricity circulators, designed to dump heat back into the power supply and add extra energy to parts of the Zaku that need it.
The Zaku has internal energy and heat control systems, but they aren't as efficient as the cables because they're smaller.

So cutting all of the cables and the suit will be sluggish and overheat really easily.

Next thread at 5pm GMT same as today.
    REMEMBER: NO THREAD ON SUNDAY.
