Things are looking grim for the Kingdom of Naheland. The king and high commander are dead. The people will have to learn the tragedy that has befallen them eventually, but they still fight on for glory and honor in their name. Naheland’s mortal enemy is poised to continue its assault on the capital at any time. But despite the bombardment the walls of the capital have refused to fall. Arwenken’s walls and its mighty citadel have been proven invincible by eons of war, and give the kingdom its confidence to outlast their opponent. However, a new era has dawned; the backwater steppe men once reviled for their savagery and lawlessness bombard the city with cannon and its troops march disciplined and orderly. What has Naheland’s nemesis become?

Belongings: Ragged robes, noble garbs, medium armour, “Kingslayer”, Armoured Galleon (Docked at Kreis)
Known Dark Arts: Soul Obliteration (Cost High), Zone of Secularity (Cost Very High), Dark Imply (Cost Low), Shadow Step (Cost Range Dependent)
    Evil Power: Nigh Human Potential
Minions of Note: Kelgris (Undead Abomination), Catharine (Mistress), Hinterport Dockworkers (At Kreis), Arwenken Rogues

Having escaped the citadel in the chaos of the initial bombardment you found refuge below in the ancient underground. Fragments of the past remain here, mixed together along with the sewage and drainage system. So too do the meek seek refuge here in these times of war. You have passed three days below here in the remains of a temple to a god long forgotten. Among the broken columns and collapsed ceiling you sit in a rotting wooden throne sitting where the temple’s altar once stood. In boredom you sit while you wait for your strength to return and to become attuned fully to your new body. Your only contact with the outside world has been through the rogues you levied, and they tell only grim tales. Sickness, hunger, and the relentless bombardment of the city by enemy cannons devastate the city, but it still stands firm in its defence. The Naheland army has rallied around its remaining commanders and with their numbers and supplies the siege could go on for years.

How much further can you take advantage of this situation? How can you escape if the need arises? What does Evil will and command?

As I recall there was much demand to open the city gates. Having commanded the wretched criminals to the eight gatehouses on reconnaissance they tell you that in a time of war and siege as it is they are heavily defended by at least a hundred soldiers each at all hours of the day. They prostrate themselves before your feet in forgiveness. How annoying.

As always it is up to you to cleverly scheme and plot to get what you want done.

You could entertain the possibility of a frontal assault, but it would have to be done well. Without preparation of planning even with your current strength you would be cut down by sheer numbers against you.

is there a confirmed exit? we could send a rouge to our ship to tell our men to get here
with kel being able to take at least 10 on his own, our moral destroying presence, and our 20+ dock guys would we be able to take a gate?

How effectively are we drawing power from the pain and suffering ongoing in the city? If our strength waxes as the siege goes on, the best move may be to simply consolidate our strength.

With your leadership and strength it would not be impossible. The problem would be safely getting one of the rouges past the easterners. It would be days before any word even if he made it.

You could keep sending them until they do succeed. You have 23 rogues in total.

In that case, I am inclined to propose that we let the days pass and allow our fell powers to swell. Have our rogues convert others to servitude in the meantime- anyone who the hunger is hitting most desperately should be easy to bring into our ranks, and once they've committed a few crimes to bring prosperity to our cult it will be very difficult for them to leave.

While our minions are doing that, we can continue our research in the dark arts. Perhaps we should teach our mistress the basics of dark magic, so that she becomes more useful. She still has that evil dagger, right? Has it manifested any powers yet?

Whoa! No! Don't send Kelgris out of the city! He needs to stay by us at all times, in case we need some serious muscle when things go wrong!

Actually, squandering our minions' lives so that they can lure the rest of our minions here, where they will likely be caught and killed by the besieging forces, strikes me as a bad plan overall.

Have the rogues start spreading rumors among the peasants of a new noble leader who values them and will lead them out of their plight and deliver them from hunger. Make them vague enough that we don't actually have to do anything yet.

I like this. Target the families of soldiers, if possible, and induct them into our cult, then use them to pressure the soldiers on in. It's a bit of a longer-term plan, but we can likely afford a few weeks.
    >> Anonymous 11/13/09(Fri)21:44 No.6693961
Okay, long-term proposed plan: Make our cult grow to as great of power as we can within the city, gradually attracting militant and assassin-type followers. Eventually, when we're bored or the time seems right, have our cult sacrifice hundreds of people in a massive dark ritual to transport ourselves and our most devoted followers hundreds of miles away, to a location from which we can begin a dark crusade across the lands, our minions sacking towns and cities one after another for the glory of our name.

    Objections? Suggestions?

With rogues to spare you cast out the leanest and fastest looking to leave the city under the cover of night. In all you send four to Kreis and alert the men with your ship. If they cannot join you they best know their job is to be ready.

The next step would be to set roots in the city and let them spread out further choking the life from the inside. With homes ablaze and crushed under cast iron and the footprints of their own soldiers you extend a hand to those most down trodden. Organizing them into press gangs to recruit more. It seems all is going according to plan when after only a matter of days one of the rogues rushes to your throne room unbidden in a panic. Rudely ignoring proper protocol he tells you that six of your rogues got into a fight with some group of civilians, whom quickly dispatched them, even capturing two of them. They were comparatively more well armed then when they were first noticed. It may be that they are working with the guard where they turned in the captured men.

Relocate our base, which is as I recall nowhere of significance anyway. Assume that the guards now know everything our rogues knew, and take a small bit of delight in the fact that they may have been tortured for the knowledge.

Discover who the civilians who set upon our men were, and have their homes raided by our other followers in the dead of night. Their interference shall bring them and their families misery. Take their weapons, too, if those are lying around.

In the future, have your men be quicker to flee organized groups of opponents, and set things up so that you are more of a mysterious background figure than someone that the guard can easily find and arrest.

You initiate (not yourself of course) a handful of new recruits each passing day. As the number grows so too does the number of recruits per day. Getting your claws on the actual soldiers has been much harder, they are in a much better position then the others. Indeed, those that agree to enroll in the militia need not starve compared to those that cannot or will not fight. It seems these actions may have alerted the authorities, but from what you know they are far from having anything on you and your actual activities.

You contemplate killing the men for failing so they may not reveal too much, but they were by reports you have gathered, publicly executed for being Easterner spies. Rumour spread that they were afraid of something more then the torture they were subjected too. That itself is an odd thought to many, but they have a greater concern outside then to think about such things. Learning your lesson, you decide to relocate for safety. You venture even further into the bowels of the old city into an old scriptorium. Old stone shelves containing shreds of rotten scrolls long forgotten decorate the rooms among the stone columns. Once more you find an elevated stone platform to have your throne placed upon.

In addition to increasing our numbers, we must increase the quality of at least a few of our minions. We could tutor Catherine in the dark arts, use our powers to somehow warp some of our followers into stronger forms (in a more predictable fashion than soul obliteration), attempt to conjure or create minions from nothing/sacrifices/black magic, or do SOMETHING else so that when it does come to fighting, we've got more than just a handful of rabble with which to fend off the city's soldiers. Hell, even getting Kelgris to train a few of our most devoted followers into badasses manually would be better than nothing.

Hell, they don't have to be anything like us- I wouldn't even want them to be, since then they could challenge us. But one of the big draws of evil has always been that it's a quick and dirty route to power. If we can't use that, then we're crippled in both recruitment abilities and minion potential power. Surely there's something that others can use known to us? The ability to draw strength or magic from sacrifices, maybe, or... something.

    >Kelgris is likely to kill people while training. ... If you want to reveal yourself and train them that is fine.
No, that's a bad plan. We're a mysterious background figure to most people, and none of our nameless minions are inner circle material. If we can get anyone with martial skill in our cult, though, have them train the others.

Zone of Secularity blots out light from the heavens. It has been used to absorb direct magical energy and block a paladin's source of holy power to weaken him. The dark energy you draw from can never be replicated by anyone but you and those that will come after you. Sadly Valtir's curse makes it so no evil being can bring new evil into the world.

This seems destined to keep our minions' numbers low, whilst teaching virtually nothing to anyone. No one learns shit from going up against a walking buzzsaw like Kelgris. Don't do it.

Find the most skilled minion we have that is NOT Kelgris, and have him train the others. Beating them up a bit is fine; killing or maiming them is not.

Also, have our most skilled rogues give anyone promising intensive training in the art of breaking and entering, followed by burglary/assassination. I'm sure that there's a black market going to provide people with food- we should be able to improve our rogue/assassin quality whilst providing ourselves with goods to feed our cultists.

From Part V, a passage from the holy Scripture of Valtir.

    >“When holy Valtir struck down the King of Evil so too did he bless the world ever after. With chains that bound him to the earth coiled round his sword and with the holy radiance of every living the king did die, but Valtir did not die that day. High in the sky hangs his immortal soul, and along with it his curse to all with tainted soul. And so too did his voice ring throughout the world one last time, “All evil of this world I curse you that you may never spread over the surface, its seas, and within the caverns of the earth. May all your spawn never be, and may you spend your last era to repent your sins and save your souls least you fade away from the new era.”

As your power grows so too has your ability to manipulate your dark energy to different ends. Obliteration is the closest you have to mutating others, but the effects are like a signal flare of evil and no two results are guaranteed the same.

Our work here really is done. Don't worry about the training or anything like that. Let's get out of here.

Although I must say this, as our evil presence grows it becomes obvious that we are evil. This upsets me because our best evil is done by whispering in ears when people think we are normal.

I propose we attempt to make a new low cost dark art. We need a way to mask our evil presence, even if it masks everything but the eyes it'll be useful. All we need is a good name for it. I say Mask.

I don't suppose that we could spend a few days hashing out even more ways to use said dark powers? Or is this some sort of strict "new powers only when you level up" system, wherein spending a few days poking at helpless captives with dark powers won't teach us anything about ways to use them?

    >Our work here really is done. Don't worry about the training or anything like that. Let's get out of here.
But our work here isn't done! Our power grows when large-scale evil is conducted- what capability have we gained that will allow us to inflict great quantities of evil on others? How effectively have we seeded the desire to elevate themselves above one another at any cost in the hearts of men? If we leave this city and move on to the next, we will be left with nothing but our wits for inflicting evil upon it.

Ultimately, our goal has to be not merely to do evil ourselves, but to turn as many others as possible to evil. The purpose of building our cult here is not merely to get ourselves minions, although that's fun, but to establish a foothold for evil in the minds of the people- a willingness, at least on the part of a few, to trample others recklessly for their own objective.

What will leaving do for us?

    They are plot unlocked.

But as days pass, your current strategies of corruption are reaching a plateau. You even managed to taint the militia. There was a purge soon after of the auxiliaries and fear runs rampant as the people don't feel like they can trust even their own comrades anymore. They only continue to cooperate on the surface to prevent being destroyed by the Easterners outside.

Exploring of the under city has revealed several places where you can emerge any where inside the city you please. Even an entrance to the dungeons of the citadel. Exploration is still being done.

The bad news, the activity below the surface has gained attention. Not from the army, but from robed figures. It is not sure if the two are cooperating in this investigation, but there is word that a group of individuals that had gotten in your servants way before them are at their head.

Have some of our followers track these robed figures and their cohorts back to their homes, if possible. If they dwell in the parts of the city our followers have relatively easy access to, have groups of our minions fall upon them in the night, render them unconscious, and bring them before us for rigorous interrogation. If they dwell elsewhere, we'll come up with another strategy, possibly involving waylaying them while they are traveling in the city using superior numbers and a smattering of dark power.

Following them back to their homes, they all return to the mage academy or the dorms nearby. >I will however, reward for thinking up plausible and awesome ways to use your current powers in interesting and useful ways.
Okay... idea time, then. Random shit we could try...

    Soul Obliteration:
-Perhaps we could somehow pull our punch with this to only obliterate part of a soul, leaving the rest of it intact? No idea what this would end up doing, but it could be an interesting experiment.
-Do animals have souls? Either way, would this power work on them?

    Zone of Secularity:
-If we can get this running, we may be able to spawn new evil creatures or otherwise circumvent those nasty paladin curses. It would take a lot of power to cast this and then experiment, but it might be worth it.
-If we could make this a smaller, persistent effect on a single individual, rather than a short-term effect over a huge radius, it might be highly useful.

    Dark Imply:
-This seems pretty obvious in its utility already, although I suppose that we can always >imply hilarious things, like ordering someone's subordinates to betray them and making them think it sounds reasonable, or telling someone that we already know everything so they might as well spill.

    Shadow Step:
-Maybe seal up rooms or buildings completely and use this to store things (or prisoners) in them, with no potential other access?
-Moving an entire army with this, powered by mass human sacrifice, was already suggested.

That's all my ideas for now, I think.

Interrogate them carefully and separately. Make liberal use of our Dark Imply power to make it seem that others have cracked, or that they have been imprisoned for days and no one has come, or similar useful random mind tricks. Find out everything they know about us.

If we do make use of any high-powered dark magics, render the prisoners unconscious and transport them to a more remote location before doing so, that the mages in the city will not sense the true location of our secret base.

In the vein of these two suggestions:

A "watered down" version of soul obliteration. A trickle of water rather than a flood. We should attempt to do a soul obliteration, however, we should attempt to make it a slower, more drawn out process.

The goal of this would be to see if we could "infect" or "corrupt" someone with our evil, rather than outright obliterating their soul and turning transforming them completely.

You have the first of the mages brought to you at your throne room. With arms bound behind his back, blinded folded and gagged he rolls on the floor moaning in protest. When you raise from your throne after such a long time of inactivity you can see his very muscles seize as you descend the stone steps toward him. Motioning to two of the rouges they lift him up to his feet and remove his blind fold. His grey eyes through wrinkled skin contort with fear when his first sight is you standing over him.

"Anything to say so as to make this less tedious for us all?"

The rogues remove the gag. But the man does not speak he merely shudders.

"Only used to study old man? Too bad, I have no patience for this."

With Kingslayer in hand you thrust it upwards into his chest. Quickly letting go the two rogues dash off as you lift the body into the air as the frost forms around the old man's chest as his life fades away. The blade shrieks. Slashing the sword to the side the body slides off and hits the floor and rolls away, without a trace of blood on your sword.

You bring in the mages one after another and the result is the same. The last of the mages, a younger woman you finally manage to get a word out of.

"Demon. So you are real. You wont get away with this for long. I can feel you now. And soon too will they."

He is followed by a cowled feminine figure holding a bow with arrow notched and ready. Following behind him a sloppily clothed man balancing a dagger on his finger. Hiding behind the armoured man a small meek robe like those worn by the mages looks into the room. And finally towering behind them all a large bare chested and burly man wielding a giant axe.

Kelgris is none too happy by the feeling of animosity behind you. "How could I not sense them coming? I have failed you my lord..."

Catharine from the throne urgently informs you from the throne out of earshot from the intruders, "Those symbols on their leader. He is a Paladin of Valtir for sure. The large one looks like an Albian."

The paladin speaks once more, "By the holy will of Valtir face me demon! Your taint on the good people of my fair city will go on no longer! I Calrius challenge you!"

You drop the woman to the floor and she rolls around gasping for air. "I had begun to think this city had nothing to entertain me with. Kelgris, stop sulking and deal with them."

With pounding footsteps on stone you watch as Kelgris with no hesitation charges the intruders. Arrows from the cowled one let loose and strike Kelgris in all the vital spots, but he keeps on charging. The party splits up and emerging from behind the large man lets loose a mighty cry that shakes the dust from the stone and charges right into Kelgris and their weapons meet and they begin to push against each other in deadlock. Circling around the two the paladin with the mage hiding behind begin their charge on you while the cowled archer you see rushing to the next vantage point. The other man you have lost sight of. Pointing your finger forward you command a group of your rogues to charge into the path of the Paladin and another to take on the archer. You doubt they will last long.

Looking out over the battlefield you watch the paladin clash swords with and take down one cultist after another as the rogues command them forward. The large barbaric man continues on his rampage at Kelgris and they continue to exchange blows parrying and blocking each others attacks without pause. The archer has nimbly climbed on top of a stone shelf and is lethally peppering arrows into the small group cultists sent that way. You still do not see the other man.

But taking the initiative you fade from sight as you emerge into the shadows. But a second later you step out from a pocketed veil of darkness behind the archer. The last arrow from the bow incapacitates the the last of the cultists and the cowl turns to where you were standing before. With Kingslayer in hand you swing vertically at chest hight, but nimbly the figure rolls forward out of the way as your sword slices through the cloak. From underneath and rolling away you notice long ears, long hair and unblemished face. With two arrows notched on her bow by the end of her tumble she is prepared to fire.

You give a smirk as the she elf prepares to fire. You do not cower or flinch at the impending impact but simply wave your free hand in front of you. As the arrows fly they disappear into a small void before you. Then with a raising of that hand the void appears above the elf. Quick to follow on the movements of your hands the elf once again rolls out of the way, but not quite enough. One of the arrows pierces through her cloak into the stone while the other plants into her arrow drawing shoulder. Leaping from the stone shelf her cloak rips off her and she begins running back toward to the paladin.

The archer cries out to the rest of the group while nursing her wound with her free hand, "Group up!"

Leaping off the stone shelf you spy a stone table and promptly with great effort tear it partially from its foundation. Then lifting it above your head you hurl it in the direction of the elf. With back turned the portion of stone connects and with a crunch pins the elf down on the spot who gives a brief yelp of pain.

Kelgris still battles with Albian. The paladin and mage are fending off the last of the cultists still standing. Those struck down around them are either dead, crawling away with wounds or moaning in pain.

Suddenly the small figure hiding from behind the paladin is finally heard and utters loudly a few chosen words of power and raises a staff into the air. The entire room fills with a dull and blue glowing light as though it has no source but emanates from the stone itself. Kelgris is immediately affected by it and his movements seem to become troubled and laborious. You cannot sense or feel him as well as before either.

You can still feel your muscles protest after ripping stone from the ground but you charge toward the paladin and mage. Your breath is heavy and you cannot muster to speak and run at once.

With you in his sights the paladin finally looks pleased, "At last! Come and face me demon and face the wrath of Val-"

You pay no attention to the paladin. With a swing of your sword along with all your strength you bash the paladin off to the side. The blade howls a banshee's cry as the ghost of the blade passes through his body. The spectre however, does not phase the paladin but the sheer force of the attack sends him sprawled out on the ground and rolling across the floor several times. The side of his armour is obviously dented into his side and he cough up blood as he tries to being himself to his feet, laying his hand on his side to seal the wound. You stand towering above the mage now who attempts to back away from you in terror.

Near the door you can hear the fight between Kelgris as the Albian continue, but then there is a sickening crunch. The barbarians axe has embeeded itself deep within Kelgris' chest.

Next you hear another scream from the other side, "Let me go! I said let me go!"

"Geeze, lady I'm trying to help you out here. OW! Stop hitting me!"

The man who had faded from sight is pulling Catharine by the arm. Catharine is pulling with all her might against it and with all her strength tries to hold onto the throne with her free hand.

Kill the mage. I agree that the rogue can't be evil enough to execute a hostage. It's a close play, but I think it'll work. Most he'll do is KO her.

"Foolish paladin, you would condone your comrade striking down an innocent?"

After indulging them you without a care plunge your sword into the mage's neck. There is only a brief gurgle as he is given a brief moment of suffering while the cold blade creeps its frost over his head. The boy so young of age falls from the blade as you withdraw it falling lifeless on the ground.

You can hear the rouge protest immediately, "You son of a- aaaargh! Why you- AAAAAAAARRRGH!"

You turn your attention to the rogue standing by your throne Catharine's heel buried in his foot and elbow in his groin. The glow from the staff has faded and the normal ambient light from the torches fills the room. You once more slip into the darkness before the rogue. After stumbling for a second he regains his composure and in a rage thrusts his dagger forward. His short dagger blade connects and is stopped by your armour. He looks up at your face with a fake wry smile filled with fear. All he sees is fiery black embers looking down at him. You grab him by the forehead and wretch his head back. Then with Kingslayer in hand you raise it up and point it down. With one fluid motion you plunge the sword down his throat and into his chest. The death is instant as you pierce his heart, but the frost consumes his body and as you pull the blade from his body and free it with a kick to his chest portions of his chest shatter in frozen globules of blood that scatter over the floor.

Turning to face the other duel in the room you catch only the last moment. Standing beside the first time wounded Kelgris the barbarian brings down his axe and severs the head from the body. The helmet rolls on the floor far from the body, but the body still kneels in its wounded position and does not fall over.

The Barbarian lets out a mighty cry of victory thumping his chest ritually. But from the ground the headless body of Kelgris lifts itself to its feet. The barbarian looks surprised for a moment when the body of Kelgris burns with a violent red fire. Bursting from its frame the rags and armour explode from his skeletal frame along was what remained of his flesh scattering over the stone walls and floor. The barbarian shields his head from the shrapnel but his skin is flayed by the fragmentation. Then the hulking headless skeleton with white bone but burning with fire tackles the barbarian and holds it to the ground. Howling in rage and pain the barbarian attempts to tear the body from him, but quickly and painfully the fire spreads and consumes them both. In but an instant the fire is over, mostly powdered Kelgris' bones lay above a burnt corpse. Kelgris' helmeted head still lays some distance away, unharmed and unchanged

On the ground below you throne at the base of the steps the paladin no longer bleeding from the side raises to his feet and begins moving toward the pinned elf with hand out stretched. Their eyes plead with each other. Stroking Catharine's chin lovingly you turn and descend the steps toward the paladin and give him a hard kick in the ribs spinning him in the air and landing him on his back. Then with your mighty foot you pin him under the weight of your boots while the elf looks on in terror.

You grind your foot even deeper and you can hear bones creak and crack, "You wanted to face me? Now you shall on my terms. You should be prepared for more then your fantasies. Because not mater how much you pray, you pray to nothing but a dead god. People die of failure, there is nothing for them ever after."

It would be good to find out what the slow obliteration does in the end, but also the minor zone will be very much needed later for hiding our own evil presence
