96 KB World of Derpness Anonymous 11/17/09(Tue)19:35 No.6750414
Hey there. We all know old World of Darkness is full of derp, yet somehow it gives the game its charm. I am the type who actively uses as much derp as possible for *comedic* effect.

So for ease of reference, lets reference all the Derp of the metaplot or games:

    1) MIR was somehow turned into a Caern by Black Spiral Dancers...so we have Killer Commie Werewolves from Outer Space.
    2) Pentex. Their RPGs turn gamers into mutant hellspawn. Aka: Jack Chick is right.
    3) There's an all-female Gangrel bloodline of catgirl vampires ~nyaa.
    4) Savage Genitals. You could be a mutant with a 14-inch dick, with arms on said dick, dual-wielding pistols.
    5) The most durable character you could build at creation was a glorified Otherkin. (A Changeling could eventually get up to 22 health levels. Really)
    6) There was a werewolf/ghoul/mage villain sue who built up 200-something points of paradox. The explosion nuked Mexico.
    7) Ever since 1999, the world has been under attack by a neverending wave of zombies.

What else am I missing? Pic related.

An ashtray. There are no cigarattes in the Shadowlands. Eventually, during the Time of Judgement for Orpheus, one scene involved a barrage of items from beyond the Shroud, one item which was...you guessed it, an ashtray.

Also as for 7... the world ended pretty fucking soon after 1999 according to the metaplot, didn't it? It's not like 2009 ever happened.

Also if you take the Pentex book seriously, you are doing it wrong.

That said, the best thing is to make your players *feel* like they're making a difference. If they're stuck doing go-fer missions while the hundreds of Canon Sues are pulling off magnificent bastard schemes behind their back, of course the game is going to fail.

Note not all supers know everything else about metaplot anyway. For instance, Garou would generally not know about Inconnu or the Black Hand, Kindred about the Umbra. So be smart about it.

Twitchers were one of the Freak breeds of the Ratkin and were completely Wyld tainted. As in, crush everything around you and laugh at its remains tainted. All of their Gifts were built around either causing riots or setting shit on fire. You couldn't pick them out in a crowd because you couldn't hold the memory of them in your face.

As for Hunters, they were rapidly growing, mostly thanks to Zombies showing up but were a novelty. If I recall correctly the Kindred expected for the Hunters to outnumber them in like a decade.

I did get the feeling that whatever it was doing the Imbuing was experimenting to see which of the different Creeds would work the best though.

"NONE of the oWoD books dealt with Africa much. the werehyenas were barely mentioned."

Actually, that was the explicit purpose of Kindred of the Ebony Kingdom. It's my favourite OWoD book, not because it's good (it isn't), but because I remember when WoD Gypsies came out. There was a huge backlash and accusations of racism, and a lot of people said "What's next? WoD: Negroes?".

No, KotEK was one of the last books released. It was basically "Africa has vampires! They're pretty much the same as Western vampires, but they have funny names for everything and a silly tribal society. Poor backwards savages!"

Wait...was this "poor backwards savages" mindset written from an author perspective, or a Kindred Perspective? If the second one, that makes sense, considering *everyone* stereotypes everyone else in oWoD.

Case in point being Werewolf. Uktena and Wendigo people have this whole angst about the Americas being the Pure Lands prior to the other Garou coming along. The others think both are full of themselves...Hatred all around.

Really, the only nonhaters seem to be the Redeemer creed, Children of Gaia, Gurahl, and some Mokole. Maybe some idealist Technocrats, rare though they may be in this day and age...

Seemed to be author, though they tried to cop out behind character. For example, the ruling elite tended to be the Brujah, Tzimisce, or Nosferatu. So any African lord was either a thug who wanted to beat you up, a monster who wanted to warp your flesh, or a hideous sewer-dwelling mutant freak.

Way to show cultural diversity there, White Wolf.

The odd thing about it was as derp as old Changeling was, it actually had a good take on Arts and Realms.

Basically, you took Arts (What you can do powerwise), and Realms (what can you affect with a power). So Pyretics, combined with the Nature, Scene and Time Realms, could give a Delayed Blast Fireball.

So if you're going to munchkin a Changeling, put all your Realms dots into Fae (affecting Changelings/objects of the Dreaming, etc. Meaning yourself). Put 3 dots in the art Primal. With Freebies, up the art Infusion to two.

Basically, both of these are health-buffers. Primal is Stamina Based (So roll Stamina+Fae to activate Oakenshield. Each success grants an extra Chimerical Health Level); this is basically a *fortify HP* ability.

Infusion is based off intelligence. The level 2 effect with it Toughen, for every 2 successes grants you an additional *PERMANENT* Chimerical HP and -1 difficulty to resist Banality (What is this Banality you speak of?).

Having a craptton of artificial HP that you only imagine as an otherkin...now Invoke the Wyrd. Laugh as you tank up damage that would fell lesser mortals.

Garou had their kinfolk (breeding stock in a lot of cases), and Kin could take Masochist as a flaw. (They *like* the pain)

Mages had Consors, and way too many ways to use mind magic.

The other broken character type was Risen. Or better yet, a duo of two Risen. Give them both a dot in puppetry, a dot in Lifeweb or Inhabit (Both are good, Lifeweb for Fetter bonuses, Inhabit for the technomancy). Get Castigate to keep your Shadow down (useful if you design your Spectre to have Shadow Attribute: Dex. Enjoy your bursts of +5 Dexterity). A LOT of really good bonuses are out there. Usury lets you drain life, Pandemonium lets you gain supercelerity and other cool stuff. Flux lets you wear superdurable armor (Enjoy +10 soak to your Riot Gear; note you can stack this on top of Fortitude). Risen, done right, are sickengly powerful.

TVTropes I think has the best derp message about oWOD

In the oWoD, science is generally associated with the principle of Stasis, which serves as a sort of Well Intentioned Extremist to the Complete Monster that is Entropy - it's not actually evil, but if it gets its way it will remove change from the world and steal everyone's freedom. This idea gets a bit jarring at times, since science has historically been responsible for most of the changes to human society, and those changes has resulted in the average person having far more freedom and choice than ever before. Conversedly, the default heroes in the games that has this theme (mainly Mage, Werewolf and Changeling) are assumed to represent the freedom-loving, change-embracing principle of Dynamism - despite being members of extremely hierarchal societies that hasn't changed for the last several thousand years.

Agreed...White Wolf's Luddite tendencies are starting to grate on the nerves a bit. They've been a bit better about it with nWoD, but goddamn. Remember oWoD Mage? Remember in the Gehenna book how they wrote about how a clone doesn't have a soul in that "of COURSE it doesn't!" sort of tone? Goddamn.

    Christ, yes.

Remember old changeling? Accepting that the real world doesn't work on dream logic is TERRIBLE and LOSS OF INNOCENCE. Growing up is succumbing to banality!

Remember old werewolf? Industry and technology were THE DEVIL. Factories RAPE MOTHER EARTH.

Of course, the most blatant, archetypal example was old mage. Science was, basically, the enemy. It was not only wrong, but evil. Examining the evidence and coming to a consensus about how the world worked was a plot by the MAN to KEEP US DOWN. The discoveries made and shared by generations of scientists, the search for truth, understanding, and mastery, the acceptance that the world doesn't work like you initially accepted and is sometimes downright counter intuitive... the courage and intelligence to embrace all that and see the wonder in it... all TOOLS OF OPPRESSION.

    Fuck you, White Wolf.

Shit, yeah. Never mind that in this magical world of fairies and mysticism you were liable to get EATEN by a fucking...well, ANYTHING. White Wolf dropped plenty of shit on the technocracy or the weaver, but goddamn at least they give the average joe a fighting chance against the monsters. It's kind of funny how they inadvertently made the antagonists more attractive than the heroes. Solipsistic power trips vs the collective good.

No idea. White wolf never knew, and never said.
Werewolf Mythos: the wyld, the Wyrm, and the Weaver. Mokole have this wierd ancestral memory thing. They remember when the wyrm went crazy, because they were there. they remember how gaia was made by the wyld, the wyrm, and the weaver, and the remember how the weaver took the critters of the wyld and gave one, humans, technology, giving them a leg up over humans. In "The Silver Record", we learn that the weaver took it's most beloved human, and made him immortal (this is caine). The wyrm saw this and went "OH SHI-" and ate caine to keep the weaver from having an unfair advantage. caine lived on in the wyrm, and got real hungry, so he bit the wyrms stomach. This unhealing injury made the wyrm crazy, and the blood tainted caine, turning him into the first vampire.

Kindred Mythos: Caine is cain of the bible. god cursed him to live forever. there are many hints and fragments of documents proving this.

Demon Mythos: The christian god made everything. he made the world. The demons were there, they saw it. they remember the truth. (Just like the mokole?)
