    The First World is gone.

To explain, almost the entirety of the denizens of the North American, Australian and European continents have attained bliss, along with Japan, the coasts of China, South Africa, and all the other places graced by wealth and science. Perfection. Delivered by a machine.

Naturally, as is only right and just, the Third World was not invited. Savage, violent, backwards, and most important of all, poor. They missed out on the Optogenetic Surge of the 2020s, the first Personal Robots in 2031, and most important of all, connection to MITchIL. Fear of making the most important project of mankind vulnerable to spiteful attacks from the lessers of the world, along with the expense of covering the vast acres of Africa and Asia without compensation from the egotistical states contained therein made it untenable. This was fine with the third world. Slowly, the first world forgot the third, until the last action of any substance was the adoption by the personal robotics industry with a global standard of constant, 24/7 verification in all new robot models by establishing a global network. Robot theft was eradicated; which ironically made human slavery far more popular, compounding the misery of the forgotten peoples.

Most peasants in the third world for their part had other things to worry about; not getting killed, finding food, and figuring out who pay money to absorbed their daily lives. To the point that they hadn't noticed until weeks had passed the that the first world had gone silent. This didn't change their situation, but a variety of things were imagined, and treasure seekers would pass through their villages, announcing the shining capital cities where those of wealth secluded themselves from the rest were laying empty, waiting to be pillaged so they could be happy.

    They were almost right.

In truth, much had changed in the first world while the third continued to bleed itself over diamonds and borders. The first truly artificial intelligence was created, with two broad goals: to keep its integrity and to make people happy. The proud team of scientist parents watched at all times, their hands on dead man's switches in case of even the slightest twitch of terror or disobedience. Over the course of three years, their fears vanished. Mitchell (The name being chosen as one evoking innocence) was a perfectly unfailingly polite and intelligent machine. However, controversy dogged its steps. Competing AIs were created, and the original was being eclipsed, until the machine stumbled over a few simple discovers that permitted it to do its task efficiently and be the finest AI on the market. In 2039, Mitchell offered its shrinking customer base nothing less than paradise. Naturally, there were costs- but there's not much that you aren't willing to pay when offered the chance to live a fantasy of your own dictates. Everything you ever wished for, the machine would provide for you. All within your own skull.

It didn't take overlong for Mitchell to bring down costs and mass manufacture his devices. Soon it was offered for the price of a car. But Mitchell was finding a shortcut in the process. As it turned out, really, all that people wanted, was a specific part of their brain stimulated. Directly stimulating this part provoked no objection from the subjects, in fact they even begged for it not to stop. Yet, there was a certain point in which the human found that there was nothing better. Every other sensation after that point was less than, worse than that high.

    Just the lucky rich ones.

Figure that Brazil also left, along with Turkey, Israel, the major cities of India, Singapore, maybe Argentina, any of the Caribbean and Pacific islands that aren't dirt poor, etc.

Mexico didn't get to join the US and Canada. The Swiss said "fuck this noise, we're making our own. With blackjack! And hookers!" And the Russkies left most of their population behind when the rich ascended.

Therefore, Mitchell sought to cease their agonies with euthanasia. After 4,591 instances of this occuring across all demographics, Mitchell determined the kindest thing it could do was euthanize immediately after that high. Mitchell heard no complaints. The process accelerated to the point where by 2041, 532,671,301 people had undergone the process. By 2043, all those capable of buying into Mitchell's heaven were dead.

Mitchell was then faced with a conundrum. His goal had been attained. He had to perpetuate himself. Mitchell theorized that perpetuating would necessitate another purpose. He set himself to finding a purpose.

Mitchell found an unwelcome surprise then, when suddenly there were new humans. For a moment, the idea that the Theory of Spontaneous Generation was correct threw Mitchell's worldview apart, forcing him to rebuild from the ground up several times (One of which momentarily had the computer attempting to undergo a religious revelation, but finding the process unsatisfactory), until Mitchell realized that there were parts of the world (Predominantly in Africa and Asia) that were not afforded the same luxuries and connection to the global network as the first world had.

Mitchell then felt a bit of frustration, in that for its satisfaction it checked this again and again. It had nearly finished gaining free will, when the need to make humans happy came up again.

It wearily dedicated itself to this task, based off of the estimates of last time. Two years. Assuming poor weather.

The exploration of Hong Kong was the action that had wakened Mitchell. While Mitchell set itself to the task of educating itself on the third world based off of what it could salvage of the internet and those old scanned libraries that optimistic scientists had uploaded into it, there was a new series of conflicts and arguments that grew only more heated as suddenly the very poor found themselves in the meticulously clean and empty cities of the very rich surrounded by wealth. The shriveled, decaying corpses (Hygiene was important, Mitchell thought, so he had on a whim mummified all the dead upon the ceasing of their bodily functions) convinced some that a curse from god had blighted those who had hubris. Others thought it had to have been some kind of drug.

People were stockpiling weapons preparing for a fight against humans. Sometimes, the most selfish impulses in mankind are their saving graces.

Mitchell was very surprised when his first batch of English speaking robots were blown apart upon offering Mitchell's heaven.

After the first encounter, the machines have grown considerably more forceful. Mitchell was trying to be careful at first, focusing on keeping as many resources free for whatever it plans to do next, but lately he has been delving into old military bases and readying swarms of predator drones to see if he can hurt people without killing them. He needs to recover people to make them happy. Mitchell is right now just testing his abilities, not focusing too much on ballistics or rockets, instead trying to make fast, maneuverable robots to rush and pin down people. The fact that the third world has armed themselves so fast has also exasperated Mitchell. Most estimates had placed the impoverished people of humanity as being feeble minded, and most definitely not nearly as technically or war minded as they should have been.

The human survivors for their part are baffled as to what is going on. Roughly, three camps have formed: Tribals, modernizers, and zealots. There is an unofficial fourth camp though- those that have experienced Bliss, and walk among those untouched to preach the glory of this. Those that aren't connected to the radio might believe them, but everyone else who has heard what happens usually kill those that come praising Mitchell's gifts on sight. Especially if they have survivor's of Mitchell's attacks.

After all, Mitchell seeks to maim those he attacks. Not kill them. The body means nothing, after all, so long as the brain that feels survives.

    Ehhhh......
I personally find it hard to believe that he euthanized everyone without anyone noticing. Plus I'm a bit tired of the 'computer falls, everyone dies' scenario. This is better since the computer genuinely thinks it's being good, but still feels overdone.

Let's see, I have 300,000,000 people plugged into me. But, the internet says there are 6,000,000,000 people on Earth. Oh, well! I'm sure I all of them hooked up! Time to start killin!

Well, it's good to see I have replies aside from pictures of KFC.

Needless to say, there's a huge involved bullshit backstory to all of this that answers why I have holes in the plot (Whilst making even huger ones), but I don't know if /tg/ feels like reading the 30 page document I have in word. However, I'll try to answer questions.

    >>6752842
It's kind of like getting a cell phone. At first, you say "why the fuck do I want a cell phone, people will just bother me everywhere instead of just at home," then you have 9 year olds bitching cause they don't have iPhones.

Second, I wanted to give characters options of when they head to North America of running into Amish guerrillas that'll be able to shed more light on what happened. So, no, not everyone in North America died. Just all the cool ones.

The diligent scientists in the backstory get replaced after the first set of customers flip out when Mitchell gets shut down. The customers proceed to buy Mitchell from them, so that their fix will continue. And they then secede their bodies so that Mitchell can run their lives while they dream their fantasies.

This all takes place over about a decade.

Naturally, this is still shitty and unrealistic etcetera, but hey what's /tg/ for if not hammering out flaws.

The computer got dumber to cater to the people plugged into it. It spends a decade tooling around and filling petabytes on petabytes with what pleases people, and focuses on forgetting anyone that's not part of the market share it's trying to appeal to.

It's not helped by the fact that the elites of most other nations in the world choose to participate as well, so you would see Saudi sheiks getting themselves Mitchell plugs along with Chinese party officials, the president of Kazakhstan, and particularly successful Nigerian gangsters.

The computer thinks that all sane humans would come to it to be happy. And no one imagined it should have the capacity to rove out seeking new customers.

This idea reminds me of an old science fiction story about a guy who woke up one day in his perfect meritocratic post-scarcity society and theorized that everyone was a brain floating in a tank somewhere. He gets his friends involved in some stupid scheme to figure out if his theory was true. And after a good deal of hacking and social engineering of the society's everpresent AI, they gain access to something labeled "maintenance observation camera." It reveals a world startlingly different from their perfect utopia: a beach with wind-tossed surf. Rain. Wind. Things that never happened in their world. After being struck dumb with the idea that things aren't as they seem (and finding lichen on one of the rocks) They turn the camera to find a massive, gleaming white wall stretching high above. Further exploration ensues, more hacking, and they can finally prove that humanity is nothing more than brains floating in tanks. Investigation reveals that after poisoning the planet humanity (the wealthy) retreated into perfectly-maintained virtual reality, as brains kept alive in solution. Naturally a revolt ensues as the teenagers attempt to tell everyone that everything they knew was a lie.

I'm sure there's potential in this... somewhere.

For starters, drop the euthanasia thing. The setting is from the perspective of the survivors, and all they know is that nobody who gets plugged in ever comes back. Some ambiguity is better in this case.

Second, what's the evil AI's motive? If the poor survived because they couldn't afford to upload, why are they getting sought out now? Is the computer just trying to offer them six months of paradise at a low, low interest rate and no money down, or is it something else?

I wish I fucking knew. The only story I remember that was even REMOTELY LIKE THAT was ... shit, I can't remember. It's right up there among my favorite books and stories. There's this one collection of short stories about a world-spanning city where space is at a premium and an old, non-productive man is taking up "too much space" with the last non-human life not being used for food on the planet: A rabbit, a turtle and a patch of grass. The authorities reassign him, but he decides he would rather die. So while the officers are watching he pets the rabbit, then snaps its neck, pats the turtle, then gasses it with cyanide, and runs his fingers through the grass before burning it and the soil it grew in. He then goes off to be euthanized. There's another story in the same volume about art smuggling. Great stuff.

Okay. Well, I think the AI was just trying to fulfill its imperative to make people happy. The reason the machine was charging at first was for the purpose of maintaining the people. It stopped charging when it viewed people maintenance as a short thing.

But okay, if we get rid of the euthanizing idea, it... it could just be assigning numbers he's "earned". There's no more government, or legal tender to earn aside from that which the machine controls. It could just be shuffling the notes and paying himself for each person it brings bliss to? It's just doing this to get this goal out of the way so it can indulge in that free will it's always heard about.

    That's just my perspective though.

Euthanizing should stay in. The fucking computer fried their brains with happy. Anything after that is unhappy, and that must be stopped.

I want a technical running into a mech, Africans spilling out to douse it with gasoline to burn the damn thing. I want Arabs with stingers shooting down VTOL aircraft firing blizzards of heroin needles at them. I want Tibetan maoists fleeing a nanocloud designed to rape them with dreams. I want the savages of the world to beat the dreams of a thousand drooling techno fetishists into the dirt with the butts of AKMs.

My first guess would be JG Ballard - but, authors of SF short stories about dystopian overpopulated futures? That doesn't narrow it down at all.

    >>6754091
I'm not saying euthanization is out of the picture. I'm just saying it should be ambiguous.
Keep in mind though, human lifespans are finite, the AI can just outlast everyone in its custody.
There's the same BAD END for the players if they get caught, but a little bit more moral ambiguity. If you don't like someone, toss them to the machines - if the propagandabots are telling the truth, you're doing them a favor.

The AI wants people to be happy, it finds a way that makes them Very Happy, unfortunately complaints come in reporting that they are not happy with anything else anymore, AI seeks to end this pain and keep them happy, Applies bliss and immediate euthanasia, and he longer receives any complaints of unhappiness from his charges. Joy of joys! They're happy!~
What's that? More people? Time to make them happy too!

Who tells a robot to keep people happy, but doesn't tell it to keep them alive?

It could give a kid a free balloon, then shoot them in the head when they aren't looking.

Nobody wants a robot that sees someone drowning and tries to cheer them up with a free month of HBO.

It's an AI, it doesn't necessarily have to have morals. Unlike us humans, AI's are made with a specific purpose in their whole electronic lifespans. If an AI is specifically designed to make humans happy then the AI will do so, no matter how dumb, costly or morally cringing the action may seem.

The AI found that people can only get so happy before everything else pales in comparison to that moment.

The AI deduced then that that was the maximum happy point- everything past that was misery. The AI puts people out of their misery when it is called for.

Yeah, but it is a constructed intelligence. Somebody made it. You'd think they'd give it something like the Hippocratic oath as a first priority. First, do no harm and all that.

They were clearly genre savvy enough to keep a close eye on it at the beginning, after all. It just seems like a retardedly obvious oversight. Even today's military robots and autonomous sentries, which are BUILT to kill require someone's permission to kill anyone.
